Indeedy, Americans sure know what Christmas is all about.
Without Christmas we wouldn't have these prime nuggets of  pure awfulness that manage to make the yuletide festivities even worse.
These tunes aren't as bad as a christmas song by someone like Meat Loaf, accompanied by a video with our loud fat friend dressed up as Santa. As Santa is an anagram of Satan, there has to be a special corner of Hell where this Meat Loaf xmas exists on an eternal loop......but as Hell is only, vaguely, mentioned twice in the whole bible, I'm confident that we are safe from that......for want of a better word....Nonsense!
These tunes from the MSR Song-Poem company, are unbelievably bad, but the right kind of 'Bad', that is....er...Good!?
If you didn't know, MSR were a bunch of musicians who advertised in the US press classified section, offering to put your poems to music.The lucky punter would then receive a vinyl single of their atrocious poem ,indeed, put to music.Quality control was obviously a secondary matter,as they had to arrange a few standard riffs and fit these terrible lyrics into some kind of melody,then record it,in little more time than it took to play the finished single.I shall be returning to the vast MSR archives in the near future,but this jolly Yuletide jamboree of shite will more than wet your appetite for more,jaw dropping badness in 2020!
So gather around your christmas table and sing-a-long to "Randy, The Li'l Elf" or the inexblicable "Santa Came On A Nuclear Missile", and bin off Crosby for another year.

As I couldn't be fucking arsed to make a Christmas compilation for this years midwinter festival, I'll just post my favourite inappropriate Christmas single by British comedy trio, The Goodies.
In the long,round,fluffy shadow of Harvey Wankstain, this tune seems to sum up this watershed year for the male libido. Beware he with a roving eye, or a penchants for the 'touchy feely', for he may land himself banged up for sexual deviancy. 
Back in the mid-seventies, in the realm of Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter, and Bill Cosby, sexual assault was as trendy as a pair of 30 inch flares and a bottle of Hai Karate. 
These days, one is technically a Rapist if one has consensual sex whilst drunk(Is there any other way to have sex one may ask?).Naturally only applicable to those disgusting creepy pervs ,men.So, during the christmas office party this year, be sure to gain the written consent from the potential target for your lust,and a witness to testify that she/he wasn't drunk at the time of signing. Maybe this is all part of Bill Gates' secret depopulation program, apparently called "Agenda 21"?(yup, another conspiracy theory).
This very dodgy record,however, recounts a confrontation between a creepy St Nicholas derivative and a young lady who has apparently grown up considerably in certain departments during the 12 months since their last meeting.But all this was 'Alright In The Seventies'

Die or DIY?'s "Festered Fifty - No's 26 to 01" (a DIE or DIY? mixtape No.10) 2016

I was intending to string this out a bit, to create a bit of mystery as to what was number one, like with the actual 'Festive Fifty's' themselves......but I couldn't be arsed.
So yes, obviously Sudden Sway's "Relationships" gets the number one spot,as could anything from their two sessions for the Peel Show. The closest attempt at originality to that was probably by Wire, and their "Crazy About Love" session (Which closed part one of this xmas feast).
The greatest sessions taken as a whole, in my humble opinion, were Sudden sway, The Diagram Brothers,The Prats, Jackdaw With Crowbar (a genuine 'What the Fuck Was That!?' moment), This Heat's first, Sonic Youth's superb Fall covers session, and the best of the lot must be The Slit's first session; recorded when they were still 'The Slits' and not some awful Reggae-lite session band.The Slits and The Prats, kinda sum up the John Peel show for me.Like field recordings of lost tribal music in the amazon rainforest;these feral and raw moments in nature preserved in analogue and digital formaldehyde for future generations to marvel at.When the age of the machine really comes into fruition, those cyborgs will mourn the day the smart phone started this slippery slope to eradicate the human factor; if not so much the actual Human beings.

Die or DIY?'s "Festered Fifty - No's 50 to 25" (a DIE or DIY? mixtape No.10) 2016

Late lamented disc jockey John Peel, may have boasted about having sex with underage girls in his biography,and frequently on air; but he was a figure who loomed large in many a young person's early exposure to the more obscure side of pop music.
Practically, the only place a DIY single could or would be broadcast, the show usually featured an exclusively recorded session from an invited artist from the pop hinterland.
Also there was the annual Christmas airing of the "Festive Fifty", made up of the listeners favourite records of 'All Time', which was later changed to the public's fav releases of the year, after "Anarchy in The UK" was perennially at number one every year after 1977 for some strange reason!?
So to revive that traditional show, Zchivago has selected his top fifty Peel Session tracks, and called it, rather wittily, "The Festered Fifty", for something to play while the Turkey is being carved.

Tech took over pop Music's Brain, if it ever had one, years ago. Dancing to a machine was a rather intriguing Avant garde concept in the late seventies, but that is now music for the masses, thumping its hypnotic beat in every hideous meat market disco around our dying planet. One anecdote sticks in my brain, as relayed by my older sibling, was when a lack of appreciation was evident for support band Basement 5, the droning voice of one J. Rotten was heard over the PA suggesting some activity in this department;

The response of the audience was obedience personified, and they applauded as ordered by their leader. Oh those rebellious punk rockers eh?
As the Christmas day show wasn't bootlegged(which apparently It Was I am now told!?), we'll have to make do with the boxing day show instead. In all its warehouse style acoustic glory.

Its not all shit on this tape, there a couple of pleasantly funky numbers, and a track by a johnny come lately Garage Punk Band called Our Generation from 1972. its another cynical tactic used by the church to reach the young people.Fine in theory, but they were always six or seven years too late with the trend. releasing an album of psychedelic acid rock in the Glam Era was not gonna reach anybody, apart from the preppy dorks who were already going to these medeval museums.
The track "Hello friends" sounds like PiL mark one crossbred with the Electric Prunes.A jah Wobble Bassline,fuzz guitar , and sunshine pop vocal harmonies.Something that could only be created by someone who were locked up in a cupboard for a decade, or some Christians.

(Note -One cannot help noticing that the vast majority ,er 100%,of this compilation features Americans! This is because Britain,and Europe had the foresight to kick out all the dodgy God Squad and send them packing to the New World to find 'Religious freedom'? They found this freedom,so they could repress themselves instead of being 'repressed' by the powers in the old countries.Sowing the roots of the American Taliban that we know and love today! 
Australia were lucky enough to have just got the convicts,so were spared this fate worse than the bible belts version of Hell!)

Have a Crap Punk Christmas From all at DIE or D.I.Y?

 What is Crap punk you ask? It's punk rock by people too disenfranchised by fashion to have been  in the despicable Bromley Contingent. It's punk rock from the provinces, where the kids genuinely  couldn't afford a leather jacket,or any instruments.It doesn't sound like bad heavy metal.It's  ideologically confused and politically neutral.It was made by kids who had no choice but to Do it themselves, and perfect the art of doing a guitar solo without a guitar.
It can include 'Fake Punk'(Mary Monday,Alan Milman Sect,FU2), which was often better than 'Real Punk' (Sex Pistols,Clash).It was from council estates and suburban cess pits,and not art schools. But the main point is, that it is still capable of making henry and henrietta normal angry.
Which would clear a room between "Anarchy in the Uk" or Keine Namen's "Can I Have a Light?"  ???
The Sex Pistols is something that's played at nouveau riche Fondue Soireé's jn the 21st century, whereas the atonal racket of Keine Namen would cause ex-punkers Rupert and Caroline to drop their bread in the cheese, and lisp angrily what had happened to the Thex Pithtols? Then sing along to Vic Reeves' "I Remember Punk Rock", totally missing the irony.

So Die or DIY? has stuck together a C-90 mixtape, using an old cassette copy of one of thee main 
causes of Rock'n'rolls rebirth; Rick Wakeman's "Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the  Round Table".Play this while you eat your brussel sprouts this merry midwinter festival, and think of what might have been,and 
what still can be.

I know The Adverts got in the charts, but they were probably the most musically incompetant of the first wave of punk bands,and this demo version
is virtually a call to arms for all Crap Punks everywhere.
The Thought Criminals' "I wont Pay For Punk Records" is undoubtedly the national anthem of Die or DIY?,and concisely  captures the basic philosophy of this blog in the poetry contained within those lyrics.
Australia was a close second place to the UK in the Crap Punk stakes; and Oz's finest ,the Victims, can be proudly crowned as the first  Hardcore band, and not the Middle Class(USA) as is so often touted(and what about Wire?).

Keeping on the christmas theme, here's another mixtape featuring a legion of crap punks moaning about TV.(check out crap punk mixtape one here!)
Watching television is the dominant pastime for the festive season, and a very popular subject for useless punk groups everywhere.
I'd do one about chocolate too, but i can only find one Danny and the Dressmakers song. Alcohol may be a possibilty, but we got Television, and you're gonna like it!.
It's a perfect word for punk songs, with its four syllable, sentence filling poetry.
The modern Folk connotations of the subject of TV are immense; so as punk is modern folk music, its as important to crap punk as "Hey Nonny Noh" was to trad folk.
Listening to the classic "TV Stars" by The Skids, one is disturbed to realise that the only surviving person mentioned in the lyrics, is one Kenny Dalglish! Even the Skids Guitarist hung himself! Is this song cursed?
On the subject of Ken Nordine, i was listening to an old John Peel Show from 1979 the other day,as you do; and he played a track from what he described as "The worst Record he'd ever heard". It was Ken Nordine's "Colors" album, which is in fact fantastic! As important a figure as Peel was, he certainly had dodgy taste in Reggae, schoolgirls, and what was or wasn't "bad"! Although "Colors" isn't as good as "Word Jazz 1"(1957), from which we introduce this splendid compilation, with the profound "The Vidiot".
So turn off your TV this midwinter Festival time, and listen to why you shouldn't be watching the evil messages transmitted by the new world order. Resist, resiiiiiiist!.........and enjoy resisting.
