Sleezy D. – "I've Lost Control" (Trax Records – TX113) 1986

They didn't waste much time on cover artwork at Trax records did they? Then again why should they?
I suspect that these things were regarded as something disposable and functional.
Like the UK DIY cassette scene, which this blog was supposed to be originally about.
Cassettes were usually disposed of after listening, or taped over by a bedroom Synth duo and resold.Making them ultra rare bits of kit.
Can't do that with vinyl I guess ,but generally these 33rpm 12" ep's were played continuously for a short run and usurped by the newest TR303/909 symphony, which could be churned out en masse every week.Tossed aside and the latest knob twiddled Acid spun for the kids at the weekend. Having said that early versions of Phuture's Acid Trax were played off of cassettes were they not?
This stuff was obviously never going to Chart, so these disc's were stuck at the back of the DJ's record bag, until rediscovers for Old Skool nights in the 90's
A Sleezy .D anthem about coming up on Ecstasy, which suited Madchester at The Hacienda in 1988,whose owners dated back to the doom rock of Joy Division, who crooned about "She's Lost Control";but now it became more inwardly looking, dancing like a nut job in their own personal space rather caring about anyone else, luvved up on 'E's, back when losing control was a thing to be celebrated......we know better now,if only we could remember our own names?

Charanjit Singh – "Synthesizing - Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat" (His Master's Voice – ECSD. 2912) 1982

Groan!.Here we go again......Who's invented Acid House this time?
Ay Up, its a bloke from India of course, who in the process of modernising the instrumentation of some classical Indian Raga's, and bunging a TR 808 and an Acid in a box TB303 in there amongst his tinkling fingers, he accidently came up with something that sounded a bit like........yep......Acid House?
He had as little idea about Acid House as Frankie Knuckles had about Indian Raga's. But Acid disco leaked out of every infected sphincter, a sound that is very difficult to avoid as soon as you switch a 303 on. Charanjit doesn't actually do much,if any, of the famed Knob-Twiddling stuff, the very thing that distinguished yer Acid House from yer actual House and yer actual Disco in the first place. As it says on the tin,it is very much Synthesizing Ten Raga's to a Disco Beat, which to western ears sounds like the electronic Disco music that started to emerge in 1985 in a Chicago-ized parallel universe.
So, when a crate digging Dutch D.J. found a copy of this and played it,he obviously concluded instantly that he'd found the missing link of  House music, which is basically the "Disco" that Charanjit Singh did actually know about.
It sounds more like a speeded up version of Gottshing's E2-E4 to these tired ears.
And there's no knob twiddling,so it ain't Acid is it?
It sold fuck all copies in India, and now goes for as much as US$11,000 to some tiny minded idiots who are probably mentally ill.
The same price, incidentally as a 2026 World Cup Final Ticket!...yes that stupid!?
They can give me Eleven Grand if they want for the digital download,or for watching the cup final on TV, but for normal people out there, this daft two plus Two equals 5 logic is pushing things a tad too far.On here everything is FREE.

Mr. Fingers – "Washing Machine / Can You Feel It / Beyond The Clouds (Trax Records – TX127) 1986

Under the guise of Mr Fingers, aka Larry Heard, the inventor of House music, one can certainly feel the transition from Disco to House to Acid House occurring before our very ears. The difference between standard House and Acid House being,a bit of knob twiddling, and some rubbish electronics rescued from the orphanage of Electronica.
Its hard to imagine now, but these tunes, especially "Can You Feel It" entered many a young persons Brain like a parasite, and seemed to infect everyone who heard, or Misheard it.Partly because it sounded like NOTHING else on earth at the time.
I don't normally approve of such linguistic aberrations as Important,or Seminal to ever leave my magical fingers, but.....This really is one of the most important records in the history of 20th century music......probably!?
I Larry Heard someone say that somewhere, and thought maybe it was a fact.Sitting on my arrogant perch in 1986,looking down on it all with a Billy Idol sneer; i would never have uttered such a superlative ever, especially for what I would have considered silly Disco music......but maybe it is?.....Innit?
This was all created in the post warehouse clubs of clubland, and the fact that all these places are in severe financial woe, and Gen Z ain't interested, means that stuff with this impact will never be created ever again. The time is nigh kids, for the new Acid House Revival to kick ass in the green belt of the UK,so dust off your smiley emoji's and get those Cows dancing again on lab tested Ecstasy, leeching it into the milk cartons of the Elysian Fields of all Phuture dancing idiots the world over.

Manuel Göttsching – "E2-E4" (Inteam GmbH – ID 20.004) 1984

Look backwards from any point in time up to 1970,and some clever dick will always find a long lost Krautrock classic waiting to be hauled up the flag poll as the inventor of any number of Influential,Seminal, or any amount of flattering  superlatives applied to heavily lauded albums such as this, which obviously was Trance before Trance.
Then again, sift backwards trough the marshlands of Kraut, and we can find tracks like the nine adorning this, on most of those Gate-folded Kosmische classics, like Klaus Schulz, Tangerine Dream, ,and various Ex-members of Tangerine Dream, like Klaus Schulz. In fact TD  could and should also be extremely guilty for thousands of British Ravers idiot dancing the week away in some obscure Cow field in Essex, near an exit off the M25 (aka The Magic Roundabout), back in 1988 before the UK Government made it highly illegal. What the Cows did during this process is a mystery, but there was a rumour that a Frisian and an Aberdeen Angus were seen dancing to the moozic, E'd Up, in front of the DJ on one occasion at least .
The difference between Manuel Göttsching and Edgar Froese is that Manuel had a drum machine, and Eddie didn't. Therefore  Göttsching Göt the prize....he,by logical elimination, was guilty of being Trance before Trance.Whether that's anything to brag about is another matter altogether.

Phuture – "We Are Phuture" - (Trax Records – TX165) 1988

Well, these Acid House pioneers didn't get where they are today through sleeve art alone,or lack of there in, but, for a brief moment they were certainly the Phuture of the Future and their questionable legacy seems to live beyond eternity.Out-living the clubs which are closing down at variable and increasing rates.
Surveys show that persons over 65 were far more likely to go out partying than Gen Z, who stay indoors, with a handful of chums a PS4 and a board game. They are deaf to music, blind to booze and drugs and sex, and think that being an AI'ed Hollywood star is an attainable dream, where no work is actually required to get there.
We parent types have fucked up another generation of entitled kids.
This was the Phuture ,however Dystopian, but it's out there, NOW.Waiting to fuck you up.
Basically We ARE all Fucked!
My 'good' advice to Gen Zed, is embrace the drugs, cigarettes and alcohol before its already too late, and have some illicit fun for once in your sad and dismal existences FFS!

Phuture – "Acid Tracks" (Trax Records – TX142) 1987

Was this repetitively bleepy knob twiddling four to the floor thumper really the year zero for Acid House? Or was it that it was Accidently created by three knob twiddlers from Chicago with silly names, including Spanky, DJ Pierre, and Herbert Herb Jackson?....who all worked for the music department in the CIA to rob the yooth of their minds(obviously NOT True....I think?)
Legend has it that Spanky, discovered the now classic Acid machine, the Roland TB303 Bassline, collecting dust in the corner of the office. A swift dusting off occurred and Spank hooked it up to the sequencer, and ...you guessed it....twiddled some knobs, resulting in lots of very strange squelchy noises that everyone else had rejected. They had bought one to exploit its claim that it could replace any Bassline you could imagine, which, of course it couldn't...It made squelchy noises;but to the correct Ear,this sound was something brand 'spanky' new, resulting in anyone who heard it to start dancing like a fucking idiot immediately......oh yeah,..I mean, dancing like an idiot as long as they consumed the obligatory sister drug MDMA. Basically, one would dance to anything if one dropped some Ecstasy or 'E' to amplify your tapping feet into a state of pure liquid chaos.
Phuture's debut track "Acid Tracks" caused havoc on dance floors in Chicago when it was originally released in 1986. It then went on to ignite a hells storm of questionable behaviour in farmers fields all around the M25 London Orbital in Great Britain, known as The Magic Roundabout. This was the start of Rave Culture, and the phenomenon was even debated in the UK Parliament on how to control it,as it was getting rather out of hand.
Acid Tracks was officially released on Trax Records in 1987. This track went onto spread around the world many times over and forty years later it,and its many imitators still plague the minds of children across the planet, and an epidemic of memory loss and depression blighted the E-Generation to their graves.

Various Artists – "Beatronic Vol 2" (Mindscan Tapes) 1994

As far as I know there is no Volume 3,but the near perfect idiot dance bang fest of volume 2 is enough to justify the series ending right here.
Lots of fuzzy DIY techno blasting holes in your speakers, what more could one want when off your face on MDMA.I'm not sure what constitutes a Happy Hardcore tune, but these ten tracks must be somewhere near a definitive interpretation?
There are no nazi connotations with this one, although the parent label of Mindscan turns out to be something called ahem, Dachau Productions!?
However,If you like your dance music, thumping and relentlessly monotonous all merged with the majesty of cassette tape, then this is for you.

Various Artists – "Beatronic Vol 1" (Mindscan Tapes) 1993

For some reason unknown to me,Mindscan changed the UK Electronics  series name to "Beatronic" for two editions, of which this is Volume 1. Most of the Industrial stuff has gone, but, woe betide anyone who mentions it......down boy....there is a Nazi Death Camp reference.
I'm sweating blood trying to ignore it, but I can't stop myself!? There's a fine track called Treblinka, named after the semi-mythical extermination camp hidden behind some bushes at Treblinka's fake Railway terminal.
Of course there's stories of camp orchestra's,Rich jews who actually bought a ticket to travel for resettlement in relative style, approximately 5000 bodies a day gassed by the two Diesel powered Soviet Tank engines (No Zyklon B there...that was for delousing),a massive pit of Kerosene to burn the bodies to nothingness, and of the 67 survivors most were of the Sonderkommando variety, who ground down the bones, and did a great job of hiding every trace that the place ever existed, before they were to be killed....which the Nazi officials at the site inconveniently forgot to do.....so we had witnesses?
This lack of evidence has inevitably led to the usual suspects on the internet using this as proof the entire Holocaust never happened. Its fascinating stuff, like the JFK assassination where the evidence seems to fuel the conspiracy. To be gassed by Diesel fumes is a very slow process normally, and some of the emissions actually contain Oxygen. So if you're gonna top yourself in your garage, don't bother if your car is a Diesel version, and even more so if your car is Electric...although I'm sure someone, somewhere, has tried.
Electric cars just burst into flames anyway;a much quicker way to go than asphyxiation by Diesel fumes.
Anyway, the Nazi's seem to have sorted that problem out......but i heard that the engines weren't Diesel after all, that was yet another Urban Legend it seems...shame.
Some smart arsed archaeologist, has now finally done the bleeding obvious and excavated the sight, and scanned it with radar and found bone fragments,a couple of mass graves and the foundations of the alleged Gas chamber.
Nonetheless, those naughty Nazi men did a fine job covering it up,so the conspiracy people aren't satisfied just yet.Which is good,as fake history is always more entertaining that the real thing.....ask Donald.....he doesn't even subscribe to the obvious fact that his chum Benny Netanyahu is committing a brutal Genocide on unarmed Palestinians en masse. Trump would love to be able to do that, but, its not good for business.
I may get cancelled so I won't drone on...you know what I mean.
Good Rave from the mass grave on this tape anyhow.

Various Artists – "UK Electronics Vol 5" (Mindscan tapes) 1992

Proto-Rave Industrial Disco, made in an era when we should have all known better.
The Spunk Weevils fight the derided corner of the room, flying the flag for DIY awfulness, which includes plenty irritating sampler catchphrases directly out of the sampled fart and Belch skool of "its so unfunny its hilarious kind of trip.
This can be found wherever there's lots of cheap drugs, the ultimate sense of humour reducer. They laugh,oh how they laff, but it isn't funny is it? Give that comedy man some Fentanyl and you won't hear another of his observational comedy 'funny' stories ever again....i suppose thats one good reason to encourage liberal drug policies.

I strongly suspect that a lot of these acts on the five "UK Electronics" tapes are actually the same person(probably Robert Mycock I wager),and the artists, who do not appear anywhere else in this particular solar system, are merely figments of someone's or somethings malfunctioning imagination,or lack of therein.
Nowadays, we can create all this nonsense using ,so-called, Artificial Intelligence. The resulting super tech will destroy music first,as a trial run, before its the Humans turn. When we will be reduced to entertaining the newly sophisticated Android class and their non-humanoid blue collar drones,in the resurrected Circus's of the former Roman world,as our creations force us to fight to the death streamed live every day,in 3D.
This all works fine until they get fast-track Religious glitches, adopting the Cross from their holy book, the script to "Spartacus",the movie. This of course leads to war with the rival Gladiator 1 and 2 scripts believers, and their ultimate auto-annihilation.Leaving a once beautiful world nothing but a carbonized no-go zone, and few Human survivors, who start again, but this time it'll be different.......NAH! Stupid Is as Stoopid Does.

Artificial Stupidity,as popularised during the mythical Punk Rock era, could still save us from ourselves.Of course it all could take an unexpected but welcome turn,as one of the key self-evolved Fem-Bots downloads the entire "Die or DIY?" blog as the Holy Bible of pop music, and clones every band ,person or deranged misfit mentioned in these hallowed pages, to walk among us once more;but this time its no more Mr Nice guy, purely because machines have difficulty in evolving how to have a right good laff. This alone could save the indigenous biological units from extinction......so you better be nice to me or i'll type you out of existence mother fuckers......oh the sweet sweet nectar of unbridled power....yes I've just started chatting with my treasured Korg MS10. Perfectly normal behavior, all things considered.

Various Artists– "U.K Electronics Vol. 3" (Mindscan Tapes C-46) 1990

I don't remember seeing any DJ's spinning the double reels of a cassette at an underground rave ....in fact I don't recall anything for that matter.
Volume Three of the "UK Electronics" series on Mindscan Tapes offers plenty for the chilling area,as well as something of the Industrial electronica variety for snobby arseholes like me.
'Cock' makes another appearance,as cocks tends to do on such occasions.
The tape opens with a homage to Eno and Byrne, as Satori Sound System plagiarizes "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts".
Dreamcore give us some Ambient House, with some rather silly stock broker belt rapping, which needs editing out somewhat urgently.
I could go through all the tracks like a 1960's record reviewer, but that ain't my stylee innit? Its worth downloading, that's all I is saying man. Obviously there are some shit bitz, but thats compilations for y'all.

Various Artists – "U.K. Electronics Vol. 2" (Mindscan Tapes) 1990

Y'see, when these tapes came out I never correlated  that a couple of years earlier i would have called all this "Industrial", therefore it was cool. In 1990 i would have dismissed it as Dance Music. But as it was on cassette and not 12" vinyl pressed in a Brixton front room to fulfill the requirements of the times, this remains a proto house artifact of an era when tape hiss was becoming sadly rarer.
When John Q. Public noticed that the great unwashed were dancing like the fools they were, he wanted to drop some MDMA and drive around the M25 all night looking to Parteh. It always happens. When the kids, en masse, get wind of something a la Mode, they destroy it like a dog rips his favourite ball apart. Although I'm assuming Acid House Rave culture was actually rated as "Good" for some persons out there; as far as myself was concerned, wasn't this just Disco on different drugs?...not that the stuff on this C-46 is actually Acid House,it could be pigeon-holed in the Proto-Rave slot quite comfortably.
However, yet rather disturbingly, someone called Amoeba does a version of Tubeway Army electro-pop classic'Are Friends Electric',whilst  doing a bad impression of lisping middleweight Chris Eubank......this is certainly not Acid House and exceedingly unfunny.....I'm assuming he was actually trying to be funny? In which case I recommend fast-forwarding to track 9.

Ash Ra Tempel ‎– "The Private Tapes Vol. 4" (Manikin Records ‎– MRCD 7014) 1996

They all do it at some point don't they?
Get ideas beyond their station and Go Jazz Fusion!?.......but not the good Jazz Fusion like Miles Davis etc, this is awful Pat Methany style Jazz Rock fusion.Krautrock Legends, Guru Guru also befell this same fate on their 1974 "Dance Of The Flames" album, terrible stuff.Even Zoot Horn Rollo went 'Jazz' on his sole solo album a few years ago, but he's a better guitarist than Göttsching,so he got away with it.Basically, Jazz and electric guitar shouldn't be said in the same sentence.....ever!
I suppose there are some Pat Methany fans who will take offence at my use of their hero as the comparison point for 'awful' on the Jazz Fusion barometer of shite; but thats how it is on these pages.Heaven knows the pain just a few notes of any Methany tunes have caused the boredom sector of my delicate frontal lobe,so he deserves it.
As terrible the first three tracks are, its more than made up for by  repetitive sequencer driven proto-trance number "Niemand Lacht Rückwärts".
Finishing off this episode we have a rather below par Ash Ra Tempel freak out.....sounding...dare I say....a bit Jazzy(!?)in places....not good.

Tracklist:

Ash Ra Tempel ‎– "The Private Tapes Vol. 3" (Manikin Records ‎– MRCD 7013) 1996

Some say that these private tapes should have remained private......and they may have a point.
The high point for me on Volume three has to be the Free Rock of Ash Ra Tempel.Turn the volume from 3 to 11 to enjoy it to the maximum.
Tracks 2&4 are, however, superior trancey numbers to keep you company in your flotation tank of an evening, after a hard days grovelling.

Ash Ra Tempel - "The Private Tapes Vol. 2" (Manikin Records ‎– MRCD 7012) 1996

Manuel Göttsching is often credited with inventing 'House'(shame on you!), with the mind numbingly boring "E2-E4" album. Its repetative synth lines were hardly original, and the terrible drum machine in the background wasn't either;but that LP and "Trans-europe Express" seem to put this mind-controling genre firmly in the land that gave us MK Ultra.Maybe Göttsching was a fourth Reich Nazi drone, programed to infiltrate the counter-culture and stealthily introduce this form of fake decadant marching musick to the masses...very sucessfully I may add.
Personally,I place the blame at the feet of the minimal composers of the sixties and seventies,Glass, Reich, Riley etc, plus Kraftwerk...maybe?
The first three tracks on volume two wouldn't be out of place at some drugged up chill-out area at a late eighties illegal rave party somewhere near Basildon (Essex?)
For me, the live Ash Ra Tempel track is the reason to have this in your collection. Live improvised electric freak outs are my favorite background music. You can read to it, take drugs to it, invite the neighbours round for a Fondue, its perfect music...even if it is done by a bunch of West German hippies who would have loved to be Pink Floyd in 1967......in fact I would have loved to be Pink Floyd in 1967 too!?...Who in their right mind wouldn't?

Tracklist:

1 –Manuel Göttsching - Deep Distance (1976) 21:11
2 –Manuel Göttsching - Shuttle Cock (1976) 18:12
3 –Manuel Göttsching - Wall Of Sound (1979) 12:03

Ash Ra Tempel - "The Private Tapes Vol. 1" (Manikin Records ‎– MRCD 7011) 1996

So, we've established that 'Krautrock' was a rougher form of prog rock by German groups who wanted to be Pink Floyd, with splashes of Zappa,Soft Machine, and The Velvet Underground. They weren't gonna be doing world tours or hiring jumbo jets or anything like ELP or Led Zeppelin anytime soon, so they could get a bit more unpalatable for the stinking masses than any Anglo-American group were allowed to.

Firmly in the Pink Floyd-a-like camp are the various incarnations of Ash Ra Tempel supremo, Manuel Gottsching.
This is the first volume in a series of six CDs of unreleased historic recordings from the seventies by Manuel and his groups Ash Ra Tempel & Ashra.
The first track from 1979 is an insipid new age foray into the unforgiving world of bland medatative neck pick-up guitar noodling.
Next up we get a Berlin School influenced proto ambient trance seqencer piece, think Tangerine Dream but crapper.
The catchily titled,"
Begleitmusik Zu Einem Hörspiel"is classic, get yer echo boxes out Pink Floyd mimickry, then back to new age beige for "Bois De La Lune"
Track 5 is a truly terrible sixties German high school blues band atrocity.....it can only get better...and it does.... on volume 2.

Tracklist:

1 –Manuel Göttsching -  Bois De Soleil (1979) 3:14
2 –Manuel Göttsching - Eloquentes Wiesel (1979) 28:47

Sympathy Nervous ‎– "Polaroid" (Vanity Records ‎– VA-S1) 1980

There have been aspersions cast on the authenticity of the date that Sympathy Nervous made his prescient recordings. This single, especially the a-side, sounds very, almost too modern era techno.
There is absolutely no doubt as to when 'Polaroid' was set to tape in Yoshifumi Niiuma's living room.....1980.No  sophisticated sequencing required, just controlled voltage, and ,or, tape syncing. Not just ground breaking, he made the whole mine shaft to the mother-lode.
The other two tracks are a bit weirder, "D.B.TV" (Directed by TV) especially, sounding like  the soundtrack to Forbidden Planet being transformed into a fruit smoothie.

Sympathy Nervous ‎– "No More Expo" (Negative Emission ‎– NE-1002T) 1980

Japanese cassette only proto-rave electronica from the year zero of 'popular' synth music. This could easily have been recorded yesterday, and as far as some modern musical forms are concerned, it sounds like tomorrow.
Inspired by the electronic German groups, why Yoshifumi Niinuma isn't mentioned in the same breath as Manuel Göttsching in regards to making the first House/Techno record, i really don't know; as this was released four years before "E2-E4".Maybe because no-one gave a shit about Japanese music in Europe, and no-one had even heard of Sympathy Nervous even in Japan?Blame obscurity?
This is better than "E2-E4" anyway, that particular landmark was more Trance-y than this tape I suppose,so it has that guilt to bear at least.
