Guerilla Toss – "Gay Disco" (NNA Tapes – NNA069) 2013

"Electronic, Rock, Funk / Soul" are the genre's Discogs struggles to classify the music presented here on "Gay Disco" by Guerilla Toss with.....bless their little on the spectrum Record Collector brains.
I've got it in for Record Collectors and Musicians alike, maybe because i'm those despicable things too,and I hate Myself?
It pretty obvious ,if you've read my blurb ,that i certainly don't hate myself, but am uncomfortable at referring to oneself in the first person, which is a definite sign that i'm not a Psycho-path ;but a psychopath would say that wouldn't he?.....whoops i've just switched to the third person? Maybe I am a Psychopath?
That's impossible because Psycho's aren't losers like me,or should I say, like him?
Objectively, i'm also not a loser, but a successfully smug bourgeois property owner....maxed out my credit cards(this is 20 years hence),stiffed some landlords, and moved to the cheapo real estate EU.
Whence once one believed in the property is theft ideal, until i noticed that rent was more than twice what i would have to pay if I actually owned a house;I now pay zero rent or mortgage, and own my place of work too.
Theft is in fact theft, and Crass realised the same thing...yes Crass are bourgeois property thieves themselves...oh the irony!? One has new found respect of our cuddly Anarchist nemesis's.
Gay Disco, I once thought, was a good name for a band ,envious of the confrontational magic of the "Homosexuals" moniker as i/he was.
Again if you like Melt banana, this is for you.
Basically,It's abstract, noisy , mutant "ElectronicRockFunk / Soul"...maybe without the soul bit.Just chuck every genre that ever existed after WW2 into a concrete mixer, and the resulting concrete would sound a bit like this...if concrete was indeed music, which I solemnly believe that it is...HE hath spake.
To quote Crass again..."They'd almost paid their mortgage when the system dropped its Bomb"....now,if there was consciousness after death, that would seriously fuck me/him off!

Guerilla Toss – "Gorilla Toss" (Tzadik – TZ 7807) 2013

I did say i'd put something that sounded like Melt-Banana by Guerilla Toss on here....so this is it.With executive producer credits appropriated by John Zorn.
Improv noise, kerazzzy time signatures and abstract song structures with a 'Punk Rock Ethic that verges on madness'....obviously not my words, and one has to Question the punk rock ethic of being as prog as fuck.
Extreme and absolutely essential for anyone interested in the outer edges of creativity....so says a Tzadik executive.
Yeah, basically 'it sounds like Melt-Banana' is what he's trying to say.....not that that's a bad thing.

Guerilla Toss – "Young Christian Balls" (Digitalis Limited – Ltd #235) 2012

Guerilla....NOT...Gorilla, Toss. Were/are like an Tribeca version of Melt Banana...but only when they have their Zany Female singer.
Without said singer they turn into some lower Manhattan  abstract progressive jazz group  that could easily attract the ears of arrogant metropolitan elitest John Zorn.
In fact, in 2013 they had an album, with singer, released on Zorn's label;... so that shows what I knoe dunnit~?
Dunno why she (Kassie Karlson) was absent on this one, but she's transforms them into ...er....The Tribeca version of Melt Banana....and whats wrong with that? If you're an cultural exile from the Ghetto listening to the bourgeois   intelligentsia slap themselves on the back by being way-out there, purely because they could. Then there's quite a lot that would annoy you on this cassette.
As for me/moi, i'm bourgeois intelligentsia from the Ghetto myself , and they, the under-clas can fuck themselves. If they could have beat me up everyday as I listened to to arty elitest  nonsense like this, they would have. These fuckers grew up to vote for Brexit and MAGA. Fuck the poor and Fuck the Rich.In their own despicable way they are the same old fucking repression that would love to re-open the labour camps for fools like us.The Intelligentsia and degenerate art is the first target of the pure evil that ejaculates forth from the minds of kids denied opportunities in art simply because they never got the chance. Too stupid to realise they could make their own opportunities....... if only they had someone to blame?
This comes as I hear that the Russian father of a young girl who drew an anti-war picture in kindergarten,is now on the run escaping an arrest warrant. Putin is a classic example of the bitter psychopath, getting his pathetic revenge on the world that he plans to re-name "Greater Russia" (lol) one day, after their non-existant Satan 2 ICBM's help turn the planet into an survivable irradiated  wasteland......yeah greater Russia indeed.......for want of a better word, even though there aren't many better words in the English Dictionary than......TWAT!

Dag Nabbit! I never got around to talking about some Young Christian's Balls!?...maybe next time huh?

Tracklist:

Egg, Eggs – "The Cleansing Power Of Fruit" (Feeding Tube Records – FTR073) 2013

While we're on the Eggs theme,These Eggy guys and gals sound like they're on Drugs....not the kind of 'On Drugs' that totally dull tossers like The Grateful Dead subscribe to, but actually sounding like someone who is 'on Drugs' should sound like.No endless Guitar solo's, psychedelic poetry and crap like that,It's effortlessly unhinged and ineloquent, especially the padded cell vocals, with words like they were written during a lazy afternoon spent in a straitjacket. Was there ever a mass break out from the loony-bin in West Massachusetts and NOT Rhode Island (where I thought they were from...see comments) ever? If there was this is the soundtrack to it....wonderful.
These guy's must be on Drug,Drugs? Which is why this incredibly unpopular record is probably one of ones few bestest records of the last decade or so.It seems to have separate tracks ,slash, songs, but they're merged together to make two sides of continuous crazed roll'n'rock, beamed directly from Nutsville,Mars.
If a bearded middle aged man repeatedly squealing "I will be the princess of the night" over a backing of overloaded and brutal free Rock as played in a cement mixer full of bricks is your kinda kick, then this should be 45 minutes of sheer bliss. If that sounds like an unlistenable waste of turntable time to you, then what the hell are you doing here!?
"Disco Dancing with the Albino Bigot"?....I doubt it.
That was a rhetorical question.
There are a few 'Woke' alerts such as the Albino and crippled little girl references on this disc;I wouldn't expect anything less for my 14 Dollars plus post and packaging....would you? It should get anyone who's trapped in the wrong body suitably outraged for at least a fortnight.I reserve my right to offend anybody....equally.

UT – "Ut" (Out Records – OUT R 01) 1984

Another early UT,again recorded at Cold Storage, ably assisted by Charles Bullen...he of This Heat....under the auspices of John Loder, who produced or provided technical expertise to a plethora of Punky Rocky types, most notably, from my point of view, Rudimentary Peni ;can't get better than that...so no surprise that he died before he turned 60.
Luckily I've never achieved anything as perfect as Rudi P or i'd only have 2 years to live!
Charles and John had a brave stab at recording UT,the result of which is this EP,and showcases UT's classic improvised No wave tunage. Discordant struming,a fine sounding muddy Bass, and a drum kit reduced to tribal toms without the Funk,no flim-flams or paradiddles here, just things being hit with sticks.

Tracklist:

1 Sham Shack
2 This Bliss
3 New Colour

UT – "Conviction" (Out Records – OUT R 03) 1985

UT recorded at This Heat's / David Cunningham's Cold Storage facility shocker! Recorded/produced by Henry Cow chap Tim Hodgkinson, who contributes his nefarious saxophonal abilities,as well as some dodgy drumming.....all assisted by all round 'decent chap' Charles Bullen, late of This Heat. You may even notice,Tim's ugly fizzog displayed on the cover surrounded by pretty avant-garde rock chicks looking moody and existential;or is that Antonin Artaud?...also looking moody and existential...he was an Ac-tor you know.I also suspect that our fun chum Antonin is the fellow in an unfortunate postion on the cover too.
It seems, even experimental avant-rock No wave music never fails to cash in on having a pretty lady on the cover at the slightest opportunity.
At the risk of being brought to tears by a mob of livid and shouty vegan lezzers I must approve of this brazen use of female imagery as bait for the casual male music nerd to chance an arm on....or at least a wrist?
As jolly good UT are.....i think they are still going sporadically?....they seem unappreciated in their native lands, never gaining a release there from a US based label. Brits always like a less successful in america american looming on the local scene don't they? And dismissing them as Avant-Wank fodder is a trifle disingenuous of me....but funny. However, this debut Lp doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of their later work .....don't get me wrong,it's still jolly good,it's just that there was better to come....oh alright I fancy them too.....they have pulses don't they?

UT – "Ut Live Nov 1981" (Out Tapes – OUT 001) 1982

A tangle with the DCMA(Copyright protection shit) has left me upset and directionless. It seems that some corporate entity has Steve Beresfords back, so this leaves me no choice but to act on a recent suggestion as to "Why No UT?".....also 'Cut Hands' was put forward...but that's William Bennett, and the same reason exists as to why there is no longer any Whitehouse on this blog......although William was very polite about it,so I complied like the pop stars bitch I am.
I am sensing another crackdown like that last seen in 2012,so it seems that every decade we get some shit....I have it all backed up ready.
I suppose UT are No wave are they not? I am told that the tunes,or No Tunes, are improvised behind the words, which are not???? Why?
Apparently, not having actually seen UT live, they were well known for long..."Artistic"....discussions between pieces,as to who plays what and what goes where. I suspect a reluctance for rehearsal time here.
The sound quality is very good.Obviously taken from the sound-desk,and,as proudly displayed on the cassette itself...."No Dolby".....I am tempted to do some Spinal Tapisms here, but will refrain...but its true innit...You don't do heavy metal in Dolby!
I don't really know if UT were posh girls from wherever Posh Girls come from in the USA,but i suspect it is so. I am reassured by my reluctance to Google to see if they were actors, like Mars were, which is a real turn off.Do these people know real pain? The music suggests they do if you listen with your mind. The juries out,and the verdict hasn't been corrupted by exposure to media sources, mainstream or alternative. The pop'n'rock world is littered with fake news, which is all part of the myth that makes it all so much more enjoyable. The right wrong facts make it all so much more ....well...y'know? Somethings are best left unsaid....They're Posh alright! Not quite at Marianne Faithful levels but enough to ooze art schooling paid for by rich parents. If that qualifies at all as Posh?
The politics of Envy are big on these shores, but i don't envy being dismissed as Posh....which of course I have been back in the fertile seed beds of my distant youth, where the weeds grew woody and bitter, and no-one is allowed an escape route by the fellow inmates.
So i think that all means that UT are good.

Dawson – "How To Follow So That Others Will Willingly Lead (Oh My Godley And Creme Cheese)" (Gruff Wit Records – GRUFF 005) 1991

Another crazy as a deep fried mars bar in a box of frogs groop, again from Scotland, and, containing a former Drummer of Stretchheads,is the unforgettably named, 'Dawson'.A derived from various band members' art teacher, who happened to be called...'Dawson'.And there was me hoping they were named after the great Lez Dawson...knickers,knackers,knockers missus!
For those who give a shit....in other words,if you;'re Scottish, they hale,or Hail,from...yeah that's right, Glasgow (pronounced Glaz Go)...or as Joe Biden says it, Glazz ,Gow as in Cow.
Plenty fractured chord sequences and obvious Beefheart influences here kemosabi ...think God is my Co-Pilot,The Shrubs, and Stretchheads with their amplifiers turned off.....very clever they seem to be...falling just short of too clever by 'arf.
Wasn't 1991 the year 'Punk' Broke in USA?...so we had to endure all these,as far as I could determine, heavy Rock groops from Seattle polluting our sceptered Isle with long greasy hair, checked shirts, and lots of quiet then noisy, then quiet, then Loud and so-on, rock songs,as if The Pixies had never existed. Once an ex-acquaintance boasted to me that he'd seen The Pixies six times; I said i could out do him on that one,as i've seen this band who looked like the cast of the Office,or more likely from a real Office, who'd formed a weekend Rock Group precisely ZERO times, and had no plans to change that.
But,the new wave of Punk had been hatched, and spawned a legion of white middle class nerds all claiming to have seen Nirvana when they were the support for Tad. Now if Tad were the only grunge band that existed.I'd be cool with that.....they were basically how Heavy Metal should sound but without the black trousers, topped off by Trucker Caps with plenty meat manufacturer logo's adorning their fashionable, for 1991,Pedophile Trucker chic.Yeah Tad were good.
There were NO British grunge bands (i'm proud to say),except, apparently some big in America token Brits, called 'Bush'.....never heard them I'm pleased to admit.
Alas, wot the British Isles did have, apart from 50 million 'mad for it' Ravers, were a few traditional rock instrument wielding loonies, who made something like the east coast USA style avant-punk,such as God Is My Co-Pilot,and....er...God Is My Co-Pilot?....can I say it again?...or something Japanesie, such as The Boredoms.
Indeed, off-kilter rhythms, fucked up chords, wayward time signatures, nutzoid singing, silly song titles,... you know, Prog Rock by any other words. Why do you think Godley and Creme get a mention?

46,000 Fibres ‎– "Emanates" (Mongolian Tourist Board ‎– MTB 018) 1995

I was looking through the bargain box in the old Ultima Thule shop in Leicester, looking for some 50p Polish Folk albums and marked down Hungarian Prog back in 95',when I spotted this. Read about it whilst glancing through the Wire in WH Smiths' magazine section.....much better than actually buying it.
Free Improv it said, and so it was, with hints of This Heat and they obviously liked Can,two influences that tempt one to replace the CD back on the rack and ruminate once again whether to buy an Urban Sax album again....something that I still haven't done 25 years later.
I'm always suspicious of groups wearing their influences on their sleeves,it stinks of record collectors making music and other music bores......rather like myself.Look,if i wanted to listen to myself i'd go and knock out an album,so I don't need anyone else to do it for me ,comprend?
I was indulging in a facebook argument about some shit, when one of the participants said he was in a band...yep...guess what he was in 46.000 Fibres. I said 'hey I got a record of yours', "Emanates". He reckoned that this one was the shittest thing they ever did. I didn't disagree, but it's actually quite good;in fact if a group member says one of their works is shit, it usually means, contrarily, that its the best thing they ever did.Always pushing product ain't they? I got a new album out syndrome.....capitalist bastards all.
They're still going today...46.000 Fibres.....apparently.

ZOG -"ZOG NOT ZOB !" (Year Zero Records YEAR 049) 2020

More shameless self-promotion with another 'new' ZOG album......this one's my personal favorite as it 'appens. A more ambient rock approach might I say?

Another lovely album of noisy improvised avant rock from Anglo-French Drums and Bass duo, ZOG.This one has slightly lengthier pieces than usual, but ultimately more rewarding.

ZOB is a french slang word for a penis, which ZOG frequently gets mistaken for....oh how we laugh everytime some clever dick says that...hahaha!

More ruthless self-promotion with yet another jolly album by those little rays of sunshine in a dark planet,ZOG.

ZOG - "Subvertebrates" (YEAR ZERO RECORDS - YEAR045) 2020

As we're on the subject of Year Zero Records ,there's been No new ZOG music for a long time, as we were poncing about waiting to have a vinyl record release, but that looks like it ain't gonna happen. That coupled with drummer boy....i said drummer boy!....nearly cutting his hand off with a stone cutter.(not his fault by the way!)
Following his emergency Helicopter evacuation to hospital they managed to sew it back on,not quite a Def Leppard incident, but he'll never be the same again. It was his wanking hand too,so it's deadly serious!

Luckily we recorded lots of shit before the accident, so here's the first installment of the usual improvised Bass and Drums interplay, with some freeform electronics atop, placed like a cherry on a cake laced with LSD.

Christophe Medina - one hand clapping and Drums
Jonny Zchivago - Bass and stuff.

Recorded sometime in 2018-ish.

The Blue Daisies ‎– "Wilt" (Iridescence Records ‎– I-23) 1985

Oh Alright, let's call this 'Art Rock'.
Highly possibly done by unemployed actors as well by the sound of it. Brad Laner played some Drums on this, not the drums that sound like Bobby Gillespie's skinwork in The Jesus and Mary Chain...the more inventive stuff at the end.
I know less than nothing about this band, except that they come from L.A. although I understand that they liked to take their clothes off on stage regularly.......now, if they ain't actors I'll share a dressing room with Kevin Spacey the next time I tread the boards at the Old Vic.
Fairly original abstract, slightly rude, avant-rock is what this is.
Featured on the soundtrack to 1986 movie 'Circle of Violence'(yeah neither have I!) starring long dead child star River Phoenix, who hated both the Blue Daisies and their music apparently. If that isn't a recommendation I dunno what is?

John Cale & Terry Riley ‎– "Church Of Anthrax" (CBS ‎– S 64259) 1971

Bongwater did a song called "David Bowie Wants Ideas", and the place to find them was usually in the Avant Garde arena. John Cale wasn't slow in coming forward with misappropriating ideas from the avant classical mainstream and trying to bend them into shape for the record buying public. Amid his lengthy back catalogue of truly terrible mild rock albums, this one actually stands up as vaguely interesting.
It should have actually been a three track album of minimalism/rock crossover tunes, but obviously the Record company must have uttered the classic phrase....."Its great, but I'm not hearing a single?"
So a three minute hippy folk tune sung by a guest vocalist was inserted, and a short rocky instrumental B-side was added to bring the album to a limp close. Among the three minimalist inspired tracks, the 'single' sticks out like an enormous carbuncle on a bare arse.I dunno if it was ever actually released as a single, but, whoever bought the album on the strength of it,would not have been happy.
Bowie,Pop,Fripp and Eno, were endlessly prowling the musical underground to steal Ideas, but Cale beat them all to Terry Riley.....mainly because he knew him from his days in LaMonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music.
In fact, despite the praise dished out for this album, it ain't that good, and relies heavily on the uncredited drumming of one David Rosenboom to hold it together;and i'm struggling to hear much minimalism on this either. Its neither Rock or minimal,or even a sucessful mix of the two,but its an interesting attempt to do something....er....different? These guys were under pressure to deliver remember? File under Prog.

The Karl Marx Stadt Studio Big Band - "Schlimmer Finger" (Self-Release) 1989

Wow! What a band name!?
A big rival to  the Friedrich Engels Political Myth Orchestra no doubt(I made that one up). The Karl Marx Stadt Studio Big Band were the closest the DDR got to a UK DIY equivalent.Sounding not too dissimilar to The Instant Automatons,or Danny and the Dressmakers, the KMSSBB,comprised of nearly all of the participants in the Karl-Marx-Stadt underground, yes even Claus Loser was in it!.
Don't you just wish you were in a band called 'The Karl Marx Stadt Studio Big Band'?...I know I do....in fact i'm thinking of stealing 'Schlimmer Finger' for my next conceptual music project.Dunno what it means but i think it may be rather rude?
In 1989,the wall was coming down and the authorities were losing control,so Punk Rock could finally come out from under the floorboards, and the true oppresion of freedom was to take over.
A lot of former East Germans struggled with the tyranny of choice when they crossed check-point Charlie only to return a few days later, traumatized by the capitalist jungle.
It ain't easy in the west y'know.Every man for himself stuff. No nice man in a uniform to tell where you're living and working. No guarantees of a Job or a home.A dog eat dog nightmare which makes communism seem like the loving arms of a Nanny in comparison.Sometimes you get what you ask for......like Donald Trump.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band ‎– "The Spotlight Kid Outtakes 1971-1972" (Bootleg)

There were two other sessions in 1971 1nd 1972 before "The Brown Star Sessions," and they provide us with a load more unheard or rejected classic period Beefheart tracks consigned to the rubbish heap.
It's all in that slow tempo we all either like or dislike on "The Spotlight Kid" album, slow like a slow pourin' cup of southern molasses direct into yer ear'oles.
Well I like slow Beefheart, it got dat Voodoo.
Zoot Horn Rollo thinks it 'Sucks',but it wasn't about what Zoot wanted was it?
Again, a lot of this resurfaced in later years on the post 'Bat Chain Puller' albums in different forms, before he retired to the desert to do his paintings, and battle with multiple sclerosis.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band - "The Brown Star Sessions" (Bootleg) 1972

The cult continued, during the 1972 sessions that produced the Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot LPs but ,unlike other 'cult leaders',this marked a new era  with the Captain appearing to have loosened the structural death grip he imposed on his musicians since the Trout Mask Replica LP,allowing them to improvise and express themselves a tad.
These were sessions intended for an album called "Brown Star", but ended up mainly as the style from which 'The Spotlight Kid was culled. A few of the songs were spruced up for "Clear Spot" and even later albums.
There are indeed a few lost classics that should have seen the light of day,but were never revisted, like "Kiss Me My Love"and  "Funeral Hill",which was at least mixed for inclusion on "Spotlight Kid, but never made the cut, as didn't 'Harry Irene'.
There are many versions of songs that hung around for decades before appearing on the later albums, like "Dirty Blue Gene" which was around since near the inception of the group,at least since '67 anyway;then waited 15 years before inclusion on "Doc at the Radar Station".This feels like a lost album, all fleshed out with an obligatory handful of marimba and guitar instrumentals and why not?....I guess the phrase 'Brown Star' is street slang for an asshole is it not? He always had a sense of humour inbetween the pretentiousness and bullying.
Here's Don's painting called,funnily enough, "Brown Star"
I may unleash a tumult of astonishment here, but Don Van Vliet's paintings aren't actually very good are they?
I quite enjoy looking at them, but they're pretty unoriginal, and a tad pointless.I said the same when i saw an exhibition of paintings done by Chimpanzees. They were 'as good', but not, 'better than'.
Donny should have stuck with music;he had potential.
Having said that,as rock star painters go he's far better than Ronnie Wood, whose paintings really are shit.

Shockabilly ‎– "Earth vs. Shockabilly" (Rough Trade ‎– ROUGH 48) 1983

This got a rave review from Edwin Pouncey/Savage Pencil in Sounds back in '83,so I figured I should track it down.
No sign of it in the racks at Revolver opposite Linekers fruit and veg stall in the market place ,St.Martins Records,or Ainsleys???....I know these names will mean nothing to you unless you come from Leicestershire, but these were our local record and tapes establishments back in the day.I'd given up asking for stuff as the staff would only give a confused and unhelpful response which usually involved a pained expression that shreeked "WOT?".
I did, however, find the Dawn Of Shockabilly EP, which was a stormer!
A few weeks passed and "Earth vs Shockabilly" appeared in the 'E' section at Revolver, and I calmly exchanged my dole/welfare cash for said disc.
Needless to say; it was disappointing when I got it home.As with the opposite sex, the thrill is nearly always in the chase.
Chadbournes silly guitar twiddling tends to get on ones tits somewhat, but alas,It's still superior to most mainstream alt-rock,even if it misses thatcertain 'X-factor'.
"City Of Corruption" stands out, and of their scrambled up cover versions of 'Rock'n'Roll' classix, "19th Nervous Breakdown" is the pick. Four stars out of five, rather than the Five Edwin gave it,and not a patch on the Shockabilly EP from the previous year.
There were more albums apparently, but I've never bothered to hear them.Further proof that most pop acts,or even avant_pop acts, should stick to one album then fuck off back to the obscure gutter that they crawled from,or in this case stick to one EP.

Tracklist:

A1 19th Nervous Breakdown
A2 Are You Experienced
A3 Psychedelic Basement
A4 Big Money Broad
A5 Tennessee Flat Top Box
A6 City Of Corruption

Skeleton Crew ‎– "Learn To Talk" (Recommended Records ‎– rm 02) 1984

Improvisers always end up playing with each other, and effortlessly turn out composed pieces to show that they can do it too, if they wanted.
Luckily for us ,'The Listening Public', Fred frith and Tom Cora decided to make us this Avant-pop classic. The virtuosity, the difficult ever changing time signatures, and mental ward vocals, do not distract from the greatness of this record.Like a cross between XTC and Egg, its the kind of prog-pop that could have hit some charts a few years earlier.
