Paul Kelday – "One Dimensional" (UFO Mongo – UFOMONGO 007) 2006

'Big in Sweden' isn't usually a subject that is risen in many conversations, and it doesn't even really apply to Paul Kelday;but, he seems to have an audience in the land of ABBA,Ikea and Volvo's,no matter how small. There have been a couple of post disappearance compilations of Paul's work that have materialised in the Swedish part of the Scandinavian peninsula. This "One Dimensional" release being one of them, but, uniquely for Kelday,it's on vinyl,.....300 copies of it.
Most of the material has only been available on tapes before but exists here in different mixes than previously released, and a few of them are even exclusive.Whoopee-doo.
I guess Lp's are as close to one dimension as you're gonna get in music enregistration. The other side is not visible,so doesn't exist until you turn it over, and viewed edge on, its just a black line hanging in a defined space.....unless its pressed on coloured vinyl,or as some clever dicks have certainly done before, on invisible vinyl.Place the disc out of sight, and the only clue of its existence is if it's playing, emitting a collection of waves. The nature of a wave is such that it can exist in more than one place at any given time and are invisible, detected by the Brain which then creates its own music based on the waves it receives. As we are all related,we hear the same thing ,which we have lumbered with the tag of "music".Whether lizards or virus's have this ability is up for debate, but one thing is certain,Music doesn't exist without the listener, and, the mammalian brain.
They're Big in Sweden I gather.....mammalian brains?

Patrik Fitzgerald - " Dark Side Of The Room + Peel Sessions + Oddities" (Die or DIY compilation) 1977 - 2006

Patrik released a shared album in 2006, with someone called 'Pog', but Pog weren't very good, so i've took the Fitzgerald tracks and beefed them up with three Peel sessions, and a few oddities from Pat's long and fruitless career. So,please excuse me my rights to invoke my artistic licence,it makes for a better experience for you...my beloved public.
The cd-r insert notes are a good read, which includes the revelation that he didn't write 'Suicidal Wreck'.....it was by some unknown band called 'The Murderers'?
So read the notes as I won't write much, cus i'm probably gonna end up posting all of the lisping bard of bedsitland's back catalog. There are frequent humourous references in the notes to killing his own career, which is always a welcome approach around these 'ere parts.
"My beautiful Career" they often say...What career? As Patrik would agree,we,and everything we ever do are all going to the same place reserved for us in Oblivion.Whether you're Picasso or the homeless pisshead on the corner of the street begging outside the Off-Licence for small change. And at the end of civilisation as we know it......which,at the moment, is seeming to be sooner than we think.....we all will have created precisely...Nothing!
We are, each and every one of us part of an enormous Portsmouth Sinfonia playing on the deck of the Titanic.Time to realise that its too late to rearrange the deckchairs and just Play On until the icey black waters rise above our nostrils.End.

Patrik Fitzgerald ‎– "Floating Population" (Self-released cd-r) 2006

He may have suvived the New Zealand earthquake of 2011 (thats where he lives by the way),but he didn't survive the Punk Rock earthquake of 1977....or at least I thought he didn't.I had all his Small Wonder works and his 'sell-out' album for Polydor (get it HERE!),but he seemed to disappear down one of the cracks in the post-punk nuclear winter. It never occurred to me that he may have just...carried on regardless? In the late nineties someone in the pub said to me, "Hey remember Patrik Fizgerald?".....fuck yeah! I had completely forgot about "the Punk Poet".I staggered to the Record and Tape Exchange shop in Camden, and found a compilation of Pat's post punk releases called "Tresures from the Wax Museum", and christ, was it good, better than I remember. So,as usual, this sparked an autistic kind of obsession to find more.
Luckily,he was 'Big' in Norway,so it was possible to get some of his more recent releases, and he sounded exactly the same as back in the day, like he'd been defrosted from a cryogenic chamber dated 1977,voice and slight lisp still very much intact.
This CD was released in 2006 as a souvenir to Patrik's UK and Norway tour. The songs are a mixture of unreleased material and re-recordings of older songs. Its Great basically.
All the old themes are there, alienation, lonliness, the pointlessness of existance, the casual drift into alcoholism and violence.I can't think of many other artists who can articulate this cruel drabness quite as appealingly.Just hide those razor blades.

Henry Kaiser ‎– "Domo Arigato Derek-Sensei!" (Balance Point Acoustics ‎– bpaltd202) 2006

Another Davey Williams/Derek Bailey  connection is that Davey appeared on this DB posthumous tribute album put together by Henry Kaiser, playing with Henry on "Two Of A Kind" from 1979.
Some tracks are interspersed with recollections of working with Derek, or what Bailey meant to these Bailey influenced musicians.
Andrea Centazzo also appears on here, also having worked with Bailey and Davey Williams previously.
Expect all the tracks to be from the free improvisation end of the musical spectrum. All performed LIVE with no overdubs, and minimal editing.

Various ‎Artists – "The Corwood Variations - A Jandek Tribute Companion" (Summersteps Handmade ‎– SUM HM 001) 2006

As every fucker and his granny has a 64 track digital recording facility in their bedrooms nowadays;and everyone likes or pretends to have bought "Ready For The House" before everyone elses granny did. It was inevitable that there were going to be far too many volunteers to be included on the two Jandek Tribute albums released in the early noughties.(get 'em Here! and Here!)
This CD is the chaff sorted from the other chaff separated from the few grains of wheat what made up the A-list on the two previous compilations.
The fact that someone called 'McCartney' appears on here should not go unoticed.Apart from that, there's no-one famous enough to be an obscure cult on here.
I promise....NO MORE JANDEK.....well at least until I get the latest few releases.

Jandek ‎– "The Ruins Of Adventure" (Corwood Industries ‎– Corwood 0787) 2006

Adventure is an over-rated commodity. Adrenaline Junkies being one primary example of human stupidity gone ballistic. Scraping the remains of an idiot free runner off the pavement around a bollard covered in human meat, is ,I guess one definition of 'the Ruins Of Adventure'.Another being a 'Normal' downloading and listening to this album in the company of his or her immeadiate family. There is a chance they would never speak to him, or her, ever again.A dream come true for many people, and for those who require this conclusion, this is the album for you.
This one is part of Jandeks detuned Bass series, and also contains some of the Rep's finest stretched out whining.

Tracklist:

1 The Park 10:08
2 Bluff Brink 8:10
3 Completely Yours 7:10
4 Mysteries Of Existence 6:42

Jandek ‎– "Austin Sunday" (Corwood Industries ‎– Corwood 0786) 2006

Recorded at the Scottish Rite Theatre. Austin, Texas. August 29, 2005.This one has a more of a bootleg feel and sound to it than subsequent performance recordings.
Its very electric era Jandek, with suitably freeform drumming and directionless basswork.
That's it.

Jandek ‎– "Newcastle Sunday" (Corwood Industries ‎– Corwood 0783) 2006

Live at the Sage, Gateshead,in north east England, May 22nd 2005. Finds Jandek in the land of scantily clad women going clubbing on a freezing january night;their male counterparts in only a t-shirt and moustache.Simple folk with simple tastes, who think their local Football Club is one of the 'Big Five', when they have never won anything since before world war two.I did once witness Leicester City getting a firm hammering of 7-1 by Newcastle United. The game preceeded by a performance by Lindesfarne......the less said about both those performances the better.....but at least we (Leicester City FC) have since gone on to win the Premier League and the FA Cup....so......HA! (Ed: Don't forget the Charity Shield)!

Of course not all Geordies (residents of Newcastle upon Tyne)are boneheaded hard cases.....I mean Zoviet France come from there, somehow I can't see them as plain t-shirt wearing moustachioed hard men? (although ZF are prime whingers in the free download department;which is why there isn't any ZF on this blog no more...silly boys...but links can be provided if requested)
Luckily for The Representative of Corwood Industries, the more erudite type of Geordie,(Brian Ferry and Sting accentless geordie types), had turned up in Gateshead to applaud our man in the black stetson.
Should have been called 'Gateshead Sunday' really?
Again, the lovable carrot top indulges in some tuning ritual before a few of the songs. He seems to have got it right however, as this sounds like classic Jandek from the electric albums, but with classier backing, and a couple of effects pedals.

Jandek ‎– "Glasgow Monday" (Corwood Industries ‎– Corwood 0785) 2006

Like a piano player in a deserted bar at 4am,Jandek helps you stare into your half-empty whiskey glass, and decide to end it all.The most pleasant method is apparently inhaling an inert gas, such as Argon,or Nitrogen.A feeling of euphoria accompanies ones dying moments, and seeing the faces of dead relatives is allegedly a distinct possibilty. The least pleasant method is doing it whilest listening to a Jandek record. His primary purpose is to reveal the bitter-sweet charade of existence in its naked form via the medium of music. He seems to be in touch with the long forgotten ancient art of understanding our brief tenure in this permanent 'now'. Resurrecting a long dead paganism (represented by the picture of the Dolmen on the cover?),which at least identified our real gods, the sun and the stars.

Basically you're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust....what do you have to be scared of?

The nine parts of 'The Cell' ,a metaphor for the human body I assume, was recorded live at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow,on May the 23rd, 2005.And marks the first release of Jandek on Piano, backed by some understated contrabass, and percussion. Our Corwood Representative, mumbles a slew of existential ramblings above his largely tuneful ivory tinkling.
Don't play this while relaxing in your flotation tank, or you just might drown yourself.
You have been warned.

Jandek ‎– "What Else Does The Time Mean?" (Corwood Industries ‎– Corwood 0784) 2006

Jandek Monday again; with the dysfunctional Ginger loner looking troubled holding an axe,(not hipster talk for an instrument,an actual axe), on the cover doesn't fill one with confidence that our hero has decided to write some happy love songs.
And one would be right. Its another slow slide down the deck of a sinking ship into the icy black waters of a deep ocean of torment.......but with effects this time!? It seems Jandek had bought himself a cheap multi-effects pedal, favoring the digital slap back echo setting. It accentuates the feeling of isolation and loneliness very nicely indeed.
What else would time have been invented for if not to waste it wallowing in a trench of self-pitying despair. When your hour of Jandekian doom has finished you will realise that life ain't all that bad after all, despite the horror of mortality.Think about that shit tomorrow.

Jandek ‎– "Khartoum Variations" (Corwood Industries ‎– Corwood 0782) 2006

HOORAY! It's JANDEK MONDAY!

Another sneaky snapshot into Jandek's mysterious existence......apparently he had a life?! Pictured here in front of an edited version of Dublin castle.
In his earlier career, I had this image of our favourite ginger whinger stuck in his house, never venturing further than his front and back yard. But later albums see him touring Europe?!
Was he cured from the sad hermit-like imprisonment of his youth,or was he just making it all up? Was he 'Normal' after all?
The songs on here say otherwise. This kind of tortured despair can't be faked, especially the tortured despair the listener feels after listening to an hour of this.......and whats more, these songs are all repeated versions from the "Khartoum" album of the year previous in 2005.
For some strange reason he never re-did "Fork in the Road"?
These 'variations' are murkier than the brighter/harsher versions on "Khartoum".....(which you can hear/read about HERE!")
Its the kind of cynical repromotion trick that large record companies do every 5 year anniversary of a mildly successful album from pops past....the 'Bonus Disc',and laughably, 'The Deluxe Edition'.......can't imagine anything about Jandek is 'Deluxe'? Where are they going to go next in their endless quest to squeeze out every last penny from us, selling the same product to us over and over again!?....No 'deluxe editions' in the world of Jandek. Just mountains of unlimited editions of his seemingly endless stream of albums.Even after he dies, i expect it to continue posthumously ,like it has with 'Muslimgauze'.
The only thing that Jandek can actually repeat,or sell us time and time again, are the bleak lyrics, along with a general vibe of hopelessness. Musically, however, its a different album,as the guitar scraping is as random and tuneless as ever. Jandek on top, miserable, dysfunctional form.

Jad And Nao ‎– "Half Monster" (Sakura wrechords ‎– CDR-10) 2006

This album is a Monster, in the tradition of Mothra and Godzilla (who gets a mention in the track listing). But this half monster is good for you, and has no intention of destroying Tokyo, but every intention of destroying musical etiquette and tradition, which it does most effectively.....without pretensions. This passes the famed 'Wyatting', as in Robert Wyatt, test of jukebox music that would empty a pub. Naturally, any music that passes the 'Wyatting' procedure, that is, actually empties a public house of  'Public', is undoubtedly music of quality and distinction; like the great Robert's lengthy canon itself. Jad and Nao comfortably fit into this lofty category, and treat us to a miserly 45 tracks of out-there lunacy that would.......well?.......empty a pub!

Volcano The Bear ‎– "Classic Erasmus Fusion" (Beta-lactam Ring Records ‎– mt092a) 2006

More Outsider avant garde folk hybridisms from Volcano the Bear's insiders from without, who used to be into Grunge when I first met 'em! Well they weren’t when they made this double CD, after consuming the experimental bowels of Leicesters european prog peddlers in the Ultima Thule platterie  en face de la gare du Leicester. Throughly digesting the minutia and regurgitating it as this wacky eclectic mishmash of aural tomfoolery. If "Inhazer Decline" was their 'Revolver', this was their 'White Album'.
Like most double albums, it could have made a fantastic EP.

Dragon or Emperor - " Dragon or Emperor " (Pickled Egg Records EGG 64) 2006

Stewart Brackley of Black Carrot and Aaron Moore of Volcano the Bear make a drum and bass racket version of Pere Ubu meets Lightening Bolt, or more accurately, an anti-OM . In my humble opinion the best thing that Aaron has done, and shows off his obvious talent on the skins to the max. Fellow Leicester scene musician, Brackley, sounds uncannily like David Thomas of the legendary Pere Ubu, and claws a mean distorted bass guitar.
For me, you can't beat a duo but you can Beat Up a duo! Ever since my first gig experience in 1978, when I was unwittingly exposed to the majesty that was Suicide.Even though they were bottled off after less than twenty minutes by the vast flock of Clash fans waiting to 'Rock out' with their famous heroes. I can imagine Dragon or Emperor being treated the same by those sheep-like morons if transported back to '78; but we are more open minded nowadays????//....aren't we???
