Harmonia ‎– "Documents 1975" (Grönland Records ‎– CDGRON152) 2016

Long lost and forgotten recordings of Harmonia in actionin 1975,as archived by Berlin School electronicist Asmus Tietchens, who provides the liner notes.
He mentions, Beckett's play "Krapps Last Tape", which is appropriate, not as a reference to using recorded sound as memories, but as a testament, or a document, to the fact that this tape isn't Krap, with one 'P'. In fact its some of the best Harmonia on record, and some thanks for this goes to Mani Neumeier(drums)of Guru Guru who adds some much needed looseness to the proceedings, and therefore, strays somewhat from basic 'Motorik' principles.
As always with Moebius and Roedelius, some of the keyboard sounds remind one of the presets on a Casiotone, as a juxtaposition between muzak and the avant-garde; always an interesting place to inhabit.

Various Artists ‎– "The Emergency Cassette- Lightbulb Magazine" (Los Angeles Free Music Society, 2x C-60) 1981

A huge and insanely diverse compilation of Abstract lunacy which came with the fourth edition of LAFMS magazine 'lightbulb'.
We've even got the Meat Puppets on here, and thankfully they don't sound like the Meat Puppets from later in the eighties 'cus they were shit; they aren't here.
We got 45 Grave, future LA Goth rockers who later sounded like a Beverly hills version of X-Mal Deutschland, but contained a member with one of the best stage names ever....Dinah Cancer.Their track here is in fact a rather marvellous sonic splatter painting, disguising the goth leanings like a Dazzle Ship. They could have been great!
The Berlin School of electronic musik makes an appearance too,in the form of Herr Asmus Tietchens, which is strange for a Los Angeles comp?
Of course there's plenty of unhinged experimentation from Rick and Joe Potts,Tom Recchion, Dennis Duck and the famous Doo-Dooettes to satisfy your craving for truly unique abstract madness.

Asmus Tietchens ‎– "Musik Unter Tage" (Aeon ‎– AE 009) 1983

More underwater, outer atmospheric, abstract electronic noise for the inner space. I have noting more to say on the subject, except that if you like serious electronic composition of the Berlin School variety then this is for you.

Asmus Tietchens ‎– "Musik Im Schatten" (Auricle ‎– AMC 034/Aeon) 1982/1988

The evolution of electronic music started off with people making a string of funny noises with oscillators and tape splicing equipment.then they made a string of funny noises with the early synthesisers, then 'the'y made attempts to play Bach on on a Mini Moog, with string sections provided by Mellotrons;this was the first Low in electronic music. Then it got good when synthetic music was made with a simple repetitious Rock'n'roll influenced slant, which gave us Tubeway Army, and a legion of minimal synth acts. This era inexplicably waned into the eighties, where electronic bands tried to sound like non-electronic bands, with those awful DX7 Trumpet settings, and Linn Drum sampled drum sounds. The second Low in E-music.
The age of the sampler gave us such atrocities as 'N.n.n.n.n.n.nineteen', endless James Brown loops, and sampling whole sections of instantly recognisable classics, with 'Rapping' over the top.One glaring example that should have resulted in some kind of capital punishment , was that Puff Daddy (Ugh!....just saying that twats name gives me a migraine) Police rip off piece of crap.
Then everything went back to real synthesiser sounds.
This cassette comes from the string of funny noises spliced together era, pre-wakeman/Emerson,but made in the early eighties.A kind of retro-stockhausen vibe when all were slipping into emulating real instruments, electronically. If they wanted real instruments, why didn't they use real instruments?
Tietchens uses electronic sound as it should be used, to try and create soundscapes that hadn't existed before. Also, it sounds so bloody good.

Asmus Tietchens ‎– "Musik Aus Der Grauzone" (YHR Tapes ‎– YHR 019/Auricle ‎– AMC 024) 1981

This precise electronic bleep fest brings to mind a BBC Radiophonic Workshop soundtrack to a BBC4 science fiction radioplay. Except that the BRW never got taken seriously, unlike students of Stockhausen.I can't tell the difference, but I can appreciate both, with a slight leaning towards Delia Derbyshire and crew; mainly because of the lack of pretentiousness involved.
Thrill to the stereo spread of whizzing electronic stabs panned against the flow of reverb from left to right. Lie down in a darkened room adorned by your latest Dr. Dre headphones, and be transported onto the set of "Bleep and Booster" (made in 1969, not 1981)

Asmus Tietchens ‎– Musik An Der Grenze" (YHR Tapes ‎– YHR 024) 1982

If there's one worthwhile thing that came from Germany, apart from boringly efficient engineering, trains that run on time, Beethoven and Nietzche; it's electronic music.God knows they need something big to eclipse their darker legacy, mentioning no names......ok.....Nena's "99 Red Balloons".....alright,alright.....and Hitler!.......satisfied now?
This cassette, however is brilliant!
Emotionless electronica, with a bit of a beat, from the Berlin School of electronic muzik.
Cut'n'paste time for the "Arty" bit;
"Tietchens is a German electronic musician who has pursued "absolute music" through an almost mathematical process of rigid formal exercises. With strong ties to Karlheinz Stockhausen's early electronic work, Tietchens specializes in irregular patterns of sonic abstractions that are suspended in gray drones to create cold textural voids from external references."
Understand now?
We understood without any patronising explanations thank you very much!
As per normal, it took the British Isles (Admittedly Germanic cousin's,but without the crushing rigidity), to lighten it all up a bit,and adding emotions into the mix. Kraftwerk is great as a concept of a cyborg future, but for now we need the human element for it to make any sense.
Musically this raw, cold ,electronics, with all the beauty of unpolished analogue wonder. Could even be Tietchens best record.....in my opinion.
