Unter Null - "Unter Null" (Self=released Cd-r) 2001

Well. I dunno whether this is Industrial or just overloaded Club Culture Disco? Or do I like it solely  because I fancy the middle-aged woman behind it....I'm sure she was young once,as was I,as this cd-r was released, sadly, some 15 years ago?
Anyway,we whom are lumbered with the XY chromosome pairing, always think we've got a chance to 'Get Off' with anything,or anyone. They, Mr XY, constantly fail to recognise female,or Trans dykes who have clearly no interest in making contact with any kind of balls with their tongue. And lo and behold, never respond to any human lacking the 'Y' who smiles in their general direction with another smile.Males cannot comprehend that this social comfort means anything other than a Come On!?
I still do all this stuff.
If anyone I deem female smiles at me, one automatically scans the smilee up and down, pausing at the breasts and crotch, cloven hoofed or not.
So obviously I 'Got Off' with Ms Erica Dunham, aka Unter Null, as I'm clearly irresistible, despite never having been in the same room as her...Ever!...but her marvelously crunchy Industrial Distorted Disco makes me feel as if I know her....or are they a 'They'?...as every fucker seems to be in these demonstrably final Days on planet Earth.
I,am,however, regrettably only human, and admit to watching Renée Zellweger on TV with a tear in my eye when Beatrix Potter's fiance died in "Miss Potter"(2006). Incidentally, this is also how I felt when the Sex Pistols broke up.....alas, no tears;but, Remember when Robbie Williams left Take That, and young women everywhere were suicidal......this wouldn't happen in 2026,as the gender confusion era is well and truly upon us,and there appears to be No escape. The Grassy Knoll of the prefect storm of Extinction is upon us, backed up  by the Neo Neo Nazism of they with the silly hair.
I suspect I am already banned from the USA  due to my anti-Maga stance on social media, and alleged celebration of Charlie Kirks assassination(they just got the wrong guy that's all); But i may score brownie points for my, now regretted culture wars stance.
This I now reject to save my relationship with my born female Child, who is Trans extreme.....far more important than being right,or a winner......as everything worthwhile is. Fuck being right, and Fuck America as long you total twats allow that Orange Buffoon to spread stupidity across this dying planet.

TWATS! Twats and double Twats!......what do you think Muttly?

Charles Manson ‎– "A Taste Of Freedom" (Copperhead Music CD-r) 2001

This is a bunch of recorded phone conversations between Charles Manson and a useful idiot friend. Hear our favourite illiterate lunatic speak on Christian and Muslim interactions, the Holy Spirit, world peace and more. Recorded in late 1990 and early 2000, it is a window into the timeless, pointless world of Charles Manson.
If there was one thing that Charles Manson was good at, it was talking complete nonsense to any willing victim who was stupid enough to listen. He couldn't read or write but he certainly could speak. He could even be credited with inventing white Rap?
Ironically it seems he believed in God almost as much as his own luminescence.
This is my personal favourite Manson record, mainly because I like the ramblings of bored deluded lunatics, and automated messages, like the ones that keep interrupting the conversations, such as: "This call comes from an inmate in a California State Correctional Facility"
As it says in the liner notes:
"At times startling in the lucidity of their depth, but still warm and casual these conversations touch on many subjects including the American Civil War, raising children, surviving on the land, world peace, ecology and Charlie's own personal history. These dialogues open an unbridged window into the thoughts and feelings of perhaps the most important figure of the post modern era. Charles Manson, unfiltered and unfettered by media interpretation or presentation speak to the humanity within us all.".....er....yeah!?

Shoji Hano / Derek Bailey ‎– "Fish" ( P.S.F. Records ‎– PSFD-8009) 2001

Like the time when Lenny Kravitz and Iggy Pop bust several blood vessels trying to 'out-Rock' each other on the BRIT awards show some years ago;a similar thing to that taste by-passing duet by Jagger and Bowie for Live Aid.Free improvisation duels can result in the players involved scrambling to stand out in the melee like squabbling children. Whereas Iggy and Lenny, gurned increasingly absurd rock postures, David and Shoji thrust increasingly louder abstract chords and wildly undulating drum fills. There are, however plenty of quiet moments as they run out of ideas briefly, but generally this is a fine example of Spontaneous Music in action.
Thanks to Japan, Bailey found a new acceptance and resurgence for his career in his twilight years.A different story to the time in the early sixties with his attempts to adapt the Free Jazz style, usually the domain of saxophone players, to the electric guitar.
A true original.

Loren MazzaCane Connors ‎– "Lullaby" (Carbon Records ‎– CR045) 2001

Someone who evokes a similar atmosphere of isolation and loneliness as Jandek, but without the pain, and has indeed appeared on a couple of Jandek records; is Loren Mazzacane Connors.
He has even out-produced the revered corwood representative, by more than two to one, in terms of album production.
He seems to be motivated only by the need to make music in an endless desire to get something out of himself.Even though he has had Parkinsons syndrome since the late ninties.
This probably helps in creating his unique haunting style.
Undoubtedly Post-Rock before either Post,or Rock. He's one of those 'Guitarists Guitarist', with all and sundry scrambling to do a collaboration.....and yes, Thurston fucking Moore has done at least one with him!
These collaborations usually sound like someone else playing over the top of what Loren Mazzacane normally plays, like two records playing at once...sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't.So my recommendation is to stick to the ,very, solo works, like this one.
The title of this ethereally melancholic collection of guitar lullabies, gives it away.A very pleasant and relaxing way to fall asleep.....forever, if necessary.

Die Trip Computer Die - "Shorter Circuits Vol.1" (Self-Released CD-r) 2001

More plundered madness from underneath the underground, and beyond beyond obscurity.Probably recorded 'Live' around 2001,there is little or no information available on these non-releases.
This is another of these privately distributed CD-r's, by noise decomposer/ video artist Lepke Buchwater (Milk from Cheltenham) with Xentos 'Fray' Bentos (also known as L. Voag, Pete the Drummer, Dr. Shagnasty and 'Bubbles' in the Beyoncé fan club, formerly of The Homosexuals) and Ted Barrow. inventor of various ur-instruments, most notably 'The Baxtertron' which was an electronic 'black box' constructed inside a recently vacated Ferrero Rocher box.
Thrill to the turgid layers of circuit bending overlaying blatantly ripped off music loopage processed to appeal to the unsuspecting post-clubber in the chill-out room, to worm its way into the befuddled brane of Mr and Mrs Henry normal, and other tattooed Chavs and chavettes.
This abstract reorganisation of popular culture into something deeply unpopular, is subversion of the highest quality, by persons who seem to have zero interest in the cult of personality, or an ego. This is to be roundly applauded......not that they'd be interested in receiving applause;one would guess they would view that as failure.

Jandek - "This Narrow Road" (Corwood Industries 0768) 2001

HOORAH!It's that time of the week again.....it's Monday....and its time to start off the worst day of the week with a real downer.....It's JANDEK MONDAY!

Nearly didn't make it because of bloodvessel busting computer problems.I tried doing it on my old skool iPhone 4, but that sent me even further into the ballistic bracket! It Dun my brane in!
Alas, all is fixed now, after five hours of expletive soaked work. Now, Jandek sounds like the sweet music of Angels.....well at least like that of some haunting ginger Siren, luring happy balanced individuals onto the jagg-ed rocks of misery.

Today's choice is inspired by a kind Jandek Obsessive pointing out that this was actually Jandek's 'second' spoken word album,in the very under-used comments section of the "Worthless recluse" post; in which i had erroneously stated was actually his second, when, silly me, it was in fact his third!?.....won't make that error again, especially as i will probably never mention this album ever again in my life.
Its not as good a title as "Worthless Recluse" anyway.

Of all of the landfill site filling quantities of Jandek albums, probably the most disturbing and soporific volumes, are indeed, the 'Spoken Word'or 'Unaccompanied Singing' episodes. They sound like the tapes sent to the Police from nuts claiming to be The Zodiac Killer or Jack the Ripper's representative on earth.Or the rantings of one of those perv's with a sealed apartment in their basement, filled with missing women who were snatched as children existing alongside his and their malnourished progeny.
The untuned guitar work is sorely missed, as that was the only thing that kept one awake during the Corwood Representative's duller moments.
I dunno, maybe I'm still pissed off at my 'tech' problems?
It still scores a big '10' for creepiness, and there's nothing quite like it out there;and....its got a song/poem called 'Killer Cats In The Caribbean'!!!!.....if you don't dig that ,then you better stick to Phil Collins for your entertainment.

Strobe Talbot ‎– "20 Pop Songs" (Alternative Tentacles ‎– Virus 273) 2001

Is there a group that Mick Hobbs wasn't in? Family Fodder, The Work, The Momes,Officer! Half Japanese and....the magnificent Strobe Talbot.Which is essentially Jad Fair,Hobbs and a drummer.
Jad Fairs childlike freedom is infectious. The tumbling time signatures liberate your mind forged manacles. The jumbled song structures erase the last thirty years of pop music in one stroke.
As far as I'm concerned this IS pop music, and one of my favourite records of the 21st century, which is a very exclusive list indeed.
The opening tune makes me happy and almost want to dance, and would be laughed out of any serious record company offices anywhere in the developed world. Its that good.

Reynols ‎– "Live In Chicago 8/25/2000" (Carbon Records ‎– CR040) 2001

They could do it Live too! This performance is a fully improvised, noise, drone onslaught, with none of those charmingly deranged non-songs to entertain the crowd. The audience kept respectfully quiet for 36 minutes, and seemed to fully appreciate it with sparse applause, cheering, and the odd whistle! Tomasin bangs away behind the feedback, effects, and guitar noise, like a toddler with a new drum;contributing some drowned out vocalisation in his inspired 'speaking in tongues' style. Rather marvellous, i'm sure you'll (dis) agree?

Le Forte Four (With Patients) ‎– "Boris The Spider/Priceless" (Cortical Foundation ‎– organ of Corti 28) 2001

Remember when Philip Glass made a minimalist 'Symphony' out of David Bowie albums, well, this is Le Forte Fours' Non-music symphony based on the Who's novelty hit,  Boris The Spider.
I've always liked the idea of doing hour long versions of popular tunes, and this is a pretty decent effort at subverting the popular form.
Recorded around 1973,the song itself appears only as a chaotic band rehearsal crossed with 'The Trogg tapes', buried amongst a collage of looney toons recordings from the TV, excerpts from The Mothers of Inventions fine 'Uncle Meat' album,Dr Demento show, Monty Python, and various other stolen moments from various media forms. Fundamentally a nascent form of Plunderphonia, reminiscent of fellow LAFMS artist Dennis Ducks Disco album.
This is either a tribute to their main influences, or a comment on the flood and over-availabilty of art as entertainment, which changes almost every day like switching over hundreds of TV channels with your remote control in the comfort of your living room.Theres too much information, too much art, and too much that passes for 'Entertainment' ; so much of everything, that it all drowns in itself, and kills any possibility of real originality. Nostalgia for the days when we had freedom from choice rather than no choice, but to have freedom of choice ; far too much choice.
Or,as I suspect, were the Potts brothers and friends just having fun?
As I like Looney Toons cartoons,The Mothers of Invention, and members of the Who(but never Daltrey)always seem to make up part of my fantasy Super Group of Rock, I have to like this record........and I do.

Airway ‎– "Beyond The Pink Live" (Cortical Foundation ‎– organ of Corti 27) 2001

As, apparently Airway are performing today ,to mark the summer solstice, and we're still on a Los Angeles free Music society trip; here's the Airway live album from 2001,complete with two video's for your pleasure.
For those who know not what this collective sounds like; imagine a disaster movie where several jumbo jets are crashing into the mother of all garbage dumps, discarded detritus from a thousand modern households flying in unpredictable directions. Kitchen white goods colliding with dying aircraft engines, and crash landing in a landfill site full of metal cans of varying sizes.
A parable for modern times or what?
Its every man for himself kids, and its coming to your town!
unfortunately Airway will not be coming to your town any time soon, except if you live in Culver City, California, I suppose?

"Beyond The Pink Live" combines an assortment of past Airway alumni with some first timers. You should experience Airway at dangerously high volume while taking care to protect your hearing."

Jandek - "Worthless Recluse" (Corwood 0769) 2001

For me, this second accapela CD is probably the most strange and outsider garde Jandek release in a vast canon of Strangeness. A collection of unaccompanied disjointed and fuzzy poetry, delivered in an unsyncopated stacatto style. Long silences permeate the stanza's , and the obvious interjection of a noise gate after each short phrase, make the silences even silenter. The exact opposite of Pop, and the real sound of inward rebellion from the outside.
Love the cover shot, and the self-analytical title.
Worthless Recluse does away with any tunefulness and goes for straight ahead spoken word inter-galactic sixth form beat poetry, a lo-fi distillation of Burroughs' cut-up techniques. Why this hasn't been taken more seriously by the spoken-words/poetry scene as a major work is a travesty of the highest order.Maybe because it was made by an Outsider, like you?

Volcano The Bear ‎– "Five Hundred Boy Piano" (United Dairies UD500) 2001

Wasn't this title a Dr. Seuss story??
VTB goes on a tour of a pretentious chinstrokers mp3 collection on quick scan; we got dark folk, musique concrete, a bit of free jazz, Edgard Varese, the BBC Radiophonic workshop, and more outsider avant garde nonsense. At times this sounds like a lost soundtrack to an episode of Bagpuss, which is no bad thing.
I'm fed up of writing about VTB, so i'll let one of the fabulous Freeman Brothers,(see the write up of Volfur to reintroduce yourself to the brothers Grimm of Leicester), explain more fully, but alas, even more humourlessly!:(

Review from Audion #46 (2002)...
This starts in a totally different world to any Volcano The Bear that we've heard before. Hairy Queen introduces the album as an offbeat Barber Shop Quartet, a side-swipe from some early 1900's musical - totally tongue-in-cheek - it sets the trend for a much more eccentric album, with a largely acoustic footing.
Some of the material is old, and some is new, and there's much more in the way of traditional instruments, lots of different winds, violin, guitars, Aaron's usual nimble drums, spontaneous composition, avant-garde free-folk, archaic chantings occasionally fleshed-out by the patent Volcano loops and industrial grooves. Unusually very vocal, angular and scrappy, some familiar gig ideas resurface, but there's not much rock music in the concoction.
It's all great stuff, though, if not as immediate as past offerings, which I guess is down to the vocal elements, which are sometimes jarring, as well as a lot more "new-wave" cum RIO (elements of L. Voag, Etron Fou, Henry Cow, The Work, et al) mixtures in it, which makes it a rewarding challenge. That is right down to the free-form almost Henry Cow (Fred Frith destroying his guitar) Greasy Truckers feel of Five Hundred Boy Piano itself.
Of course, this could all be down to the "sound of five thousand tiny fingers" to quote the promo blurb. Though, I guess it was just the desire to do something completely different. They definitely succeeded!
