Joy Division - "Rehearsals 1977-80" (Bootleg) 2018

I've had my Porridge this morning, fortified with red fruits and walnuts, soon to change to Gruel after all the supermarket shelves have been cleared by panicing idiots.Even the Vegan section is nearly empty,so that puts the scale of the hysteria in perspective somewhat. So,I suppose, this is still part of the Genesis P-Orridge memorial posts wot i've been doing with a notable lack of a brown nose.
As was mooted in the comments section on either one of the Industrial Philips (Sanderson and Johnson) posts,it was suggested that the fantasy industrial pairing of Ian Curtis and Mr P-Orridge may have resulted in some actual tapes of said encounter. This doesn't appear to bare any weight, unless it was done over the telephone or through the classic DIY avenue of the  mail service,
Apart from the odd gig where Joy Division supported Throbbing Gristle, there was hardly a chance to be in the same town as each other never mind the same room before Ian asphyxiated himself with the assistance of the the laundry rack in his Macclesfield hovel.
Upon meeting, Curtis would obviously have indulged Genesis with some standard Fan sychophancy, which GPO would have lapped up,flattered that the singer of the hottest group in town thought he was good. This usually leads to a mutual masturbation session, including the tiresome drunken cliché of suggesting that  "We really must get a band together".Just like the friends you make on holiday who you never see again after agreeing to "Keep in touch!".
The only information we have on this relationship comes from Genesis P.,as the other principle witness died twenty years previously. Aparently, according to our TG frontman/person, Curtis used to phone him up while at a low ebb,.....cue some classic Marilyn Monroe Syndrome, where the receiver of the phone call indulges in the 'I could have saved him' scenario. This is pure narcissism of course, and very common in suicide cases for even total strangers to believe they hold the answer in their healing hands, which is Christlike behaviour often displayed in the brain function of Psychopaths. Also there is nobody there who can possibly contradict these statements,so ones cover is safe this side of the grave.
Gen also makes reference to his fantasy that Curtis wanted to leave Joy Division and set up with him?
Highly tenuous?......Throbbing Joy?
So,that is the reason.....do we really need a reason?....that I've resorted to Joy Division's Rehearsal tapes to entertain myself, and hopefully you lot,on this bleak sunday morning. The sun is shining but it feel like there's a blizzard blowing outside.....not that i'm allowed outside without my signed and dated form plus proof of ID.(ps if you're reading this in years to come,it was the Covid 19 pandemic thing that I refer to!).
Yes I love Joy Division, and contrarily to their reputation of being a bunch of miserable manc bastards, this is cheering me up somewhat.
It's also a very interesting insight into Joy Division at work.
The main items of interest are,of course, the several versions of "In A Lonely Place",which ,along with "Ceremony" was never captured in a studio with Martin Hannett at the controls. These two tracks would undoubtedly have been the next single, and number one with a bullet.
Again the rapid evolution of the Joy Division sound is very evident(the first 12 tracks are really 'Warsaw rather than JD),as is the perception of the incredibly short time the JD we know were around for......only about 6 or 7 months max, then he left us at the top of his game, never to have their reputation tarnished, forever, although New Order have tried ceaselessly to ruin it.(The Movement album was great however?)
And ,No, no-one could have stopped it happening.....not even Genesis P-Orridge!?

Joy Division - "High Hall,Birmingham University 02/05/1980" (Bootleg)

A notable performance, that brings us to the end of this seemingly endless series of Joy Division Bootlegs, for two reasons.
One, it was the only time Joy Division performed "Ceremony",and, two, this was the bands final performance.
For those of you who live on some exo-planet somewhere, Ian Curtis, vocalist and lyricist of Joy Division(?),committed suicide a little over two weeks after this concert, after enduring a turbulant personal life and suffering from worsening epilepsy.
This sad fact adds some poignancy to this performance(despite Bernard's constant bum-notes!), which sounds like a well recorded funeral march to these ears in retrospect. The lyrics read as some kind of preemptive obituary....."Ceremony", "A Means To An End" "Isolation" are all very ominous titles, but maybe the lyrics to "New Dawn Fades" seem to accurately describe his desperate situation and feelings:

New Dawn Fades:

"A change of speed, a change of style
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied, though you forget
Different colours, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless so plain to see
A loaded gun won't set you free
So you say

We'll share a drink and step outside
An angry voice and one who cried
We'll give you everything and more
The strain's too much, can't take much more
Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire
Can't seem to feel it anymore

It was me, waiting for me
Hoping for something more
Me, seeing me this time
Hoping for something else."

He does seem to be going through the motions during this performance,as do the rest of the band.
He was actually helped offstage again during "Decades", but returned for a rousing version of "Digital",which as a fitting (no pun intended) monument for his last word sung in public, included the word,'Out!';which he undoubtedly wanted to be.Then his last words were ominously "Thank you, Goodnight".

As an Epitaph to the life of Joy Division, there are better concerts; but as an elegy to the troubled existence of Ian Curtis, this show exposes his vulnerability perfectly.....it's a pity nobody noticed or were willing to do anything about it.It was an era when men's mental health was frequently laughed off, with a 'Pull yourself together man' attitude. The only answer his management and 'mates' could come up with was an 'American Tour' that their singer never made. Then we got, the not very good, New Order?!

[To those who care, its a quality soundboard recording, with two very fuzzy soundcheck recordings to kick it off with.]

Joy Division - "Imperial Hotel, Blackpool 27/07/1979" ("All Angels Beware" Bootleg)

A bit out of sequence as I failed to realise I had this, as it was listed under the title of the "All Angels Beware" Bootleg.
This is from the "Year of the Child" benefit concert, as organised by Blackpool's own Section 25.
To the uninitiated, the line-up reads like a Nazi sympathisers rally; what with Joy Division, then a band called 'Final Solution', along with some group called 'Zyklon B'!?
Also playing were the Glass Torpedoes, OMD,and Section 25 headlining.
The Joy Division set was a high octane affair, and well recorded by several audience members.

Tracklist:

01. Dead Souls
02. Glass
03. Disorder
04. Auto-Suggestion
05. Transmission
06. She's Lost Control
07. Shadowplay
08. Atrocity Exhibition.

Joy Division - "Ajanta Theatre, Derby 19/04/1980" (Bootleg)

Massive as Joy Division were becoming, they still played Shit-Holes like this former, partially demolished, cinema in Derby. The old seats were still in place, except for a few that were torn off of their perches to allow dancing, if required.
Again, another cavernous sounding audience recording, and again we are treated to a joint band version of "Girls Don't Count" for the rarity value.
Due to cancellations, probably due to Ian's failing health, this would turn out to be the penultimate Joy Division performance, before.....well,you know what happened next!?

Tracklist:

01. Dead Souls
02. Wilderness
03. Digital
04. Insight
05. Passover
06. Heart And Soul
07. Isolation
08. These Days

10. She's Lost Control
11. Colony
12. Girls Don't Count/jam with SECTION 25

Joy Division - " Winter Gardens, Malvern 05/04/1980" (Bootleg)

Incredibly, instead of taking at least one day off after Ian's epileptic fit at the Moonlight Club the previous evening , they played another gig the next night!?.....he really was doomed wasn't he?
Seems like a decent performance however,if the recording of it is a little cavernous. It does finish with everyone one from Joy Division and Section 25 doing a version of S25's "Girls Don't Count", to which an audience member remarks, "He-He-Hey! A bit of variety(pronounced 'vari-e-teh' in an East Midlands accent)".
Who said entertainment was dead?

Tracklist:

01. Disorder
02. Wilderness
03. Twenty Four Hours

Joy Division - "Moonlight Club,Hampstead, London 02/04/1980 ,03/04/1980 & 04/04/1980" (Bootleg)

Two good quality(the third night is a bit muffled) audience recordings from the infamous 4 gigs in three days stint at the beginning of April 1980. This included three consecutive nights at The Moonlight Club in West Hampstead, with a 'big gig' at The Rainbow sandwiched inbetween.
Utter madness considering Ian Curtis's failing health.
Predictably, on the night of the fourth, after playing an intense performance at the Rainbow, Ian was noticeably ill, and after twenty minutes into their second gig of the night at The Moonlight Club, Ian had another epileptic attack at the end of 'Interzone' to finish the evening. An understanding audience member shouted 'Fuck Off' as Curtis was carried offstage and Bernard announced that this was the end of the evening.
The tragic disregard of Curtis's condition was nothing more than criminal ignorance on behalf of his cohorts, and I expect nothing more from the demanding public. And it's no disconnected fact than he killed himself a month later almost to the day.

Joy Division - "Lyceum Theatre,London 29/02/1980" (Bootleg)

Probably Joy Division's most prestigious concert in their short lifetime, at the posh Lyceum Theatre.
What a great line-up too?
This is a very high quality audience recording, with a hint of ambiance, with a recording of the soundcheck included.

Joy Division - "Warehouse, Preston 28/02/1980" (Bootleg)

Equipment failure plagued this concert, with Curtis actually asking for requests after a long break during 'Heart and Soul'; while they fiddled about with the amps.Naturally the accepted request was for "Shadowplay".
There's also an amusing moment when a young lady with a northern accent makes an announcement informing those poor buggers from Burnley that their coach is leaving in five minutes! As if living in Burnley wasn't bad enough as it is?
Probably one of the most interesting JD live bootlegs,if only for the solitary time that the voice of the late Rob Gretton appears on a JD Recording.("Wossgooinon?...'ookeh,'ookeh!...Wass'appnin'?)
I bet Toyah never had these problems??

Tracklist:

01: Incubation

Joy Division - "University of London 08/02/1980" (Bootleg)

The line-up, to the uninformed, would have read like an invitation for a real happy party. What with the words Joy, Smirk, and Joke all involved in the Band monikers. The only hint at darkness was Section 25 (of the mental health act).
The Smirks were obviously a good time new wave band of also-rans, but the other three were not really party music.
Joy Division turned up with bucket loads of new technology. Synthesisers were now part of their newer, more textural downbeat sound of the new album, which they were in the capital to work on at Pink Floyd's studio, Britannia Row. Maybe JD had prog influences after-all?
The set list reflects this style modification, with virtually none of the 'Unknown Pleasures'era paint peelers involved.
The audience seemed to like it however;but then again, by this time they could have played 'The Birdie Song' and got rapturous applause.

Paul Morley wrote [NME, 16 Feb 1980]: "The full new introduction of synthesizers has not damaged the coherence and balance of the music in any way, it simply increases the amount of mood, atmosphere, ephemeral terror Joy Division are capable of."......yes he did say 'ephemeral terror'!

Joy Division - "Basement Club, Cologne 15/01/1980" (Bootleg)

Great!....a gig in Germany, which means I can talk about the war again!Yippee!
A rather muffled audience recording from the basement of a disused church in Cologne. Which must have excited Ian Curtis's Nazi obsession somewhat to be in Germany where ,apparently all that stuff kicked off big-time!
I'm afraid my father was probably collectively responsible for killing some of the audience members' family during the first thousand bomber air raid in 1942,as he was in one of those very bombers that created a fire storm I believe? The aiming point was Cologne Cathedral, which makes this gig's venue rather Ironic......but we're all friends now ain't we?.....until Brexshit anyway!
ps....I humbly apologise  for the British terror bombing during those years....undoubtedly a war crime by modern standards........my father is probably spinning in his urn right now.....sorry dad, you were just 'obeying orders' after all......hmmmmmm,now, where have I heard that before?

Joy Division - "Effenaar, Eindhoven 18/01/1980" (Bootleg)

Another great soundboard recording from our chums on the continent.........yep, i'm running out of things to say.......a reverent silence is always appropriate when writing about Joy Division anyway,so i'm shutting up.....also, I can't wait to finish this series of bootlegs and get onto something else!...No, not Joy Division's infamous appearance on the BBC2 TV show called 'Something Else' during which Curtis's glazed expression led to a flood of complaints from parents that he was on 'drugs....he was, medication for his epilepsy',.....no  I really mean......SOMETHING ELSE !

Joy Division - "Amsterdam, Paradiso 11/01/1980" (Bootleg)

Another excellent soundboard recording, thanks again to our continental cousins, this time in Holland.
If this isn't a good reason why the UK shouldn't exit the EU then I don't know what is?
JD played two different sets for a handful of punters in the Dutch capital.Apparently the support band didn't turn up?

Joy Division - "Les Bains Douches, Paris 18/12/1979" (Bootleg)

Again we have to thank France for saving anglo-american music from themselves. This concert was the subject of a radio broadcast on the Bernard Lenoir Show on French radio, so there exists a broadcast quality recording , which was partially released on CD at the turn of the century.
This official version doesn't seem to include the whole of the performance however, but its by far the best quality recording of Joy Division in action.
So, to fill in the gaps this is the full set as recorded by an audience member on the night. It reveals that mistakes were edited out ,whole tunes dropped, and what sounds like modern effects added, with generous amounts of compression. It sounds a lot more punchy than the bootleg,or anything that had been released before under the name of Joy Division. Probably the most played release by JD in my collection.Probably the high water mark for Joy Division, before Ian's illness and personal problems took over and destroyed him.

Joy Division - "Rainbow Theatre, London 09/11/1979" (Bootleg)

By the end of this tour, The Buzzcocks were, by now, aware that Joy Division were creating far too much of an impact for a support band. So,Rumour has it, the Buzzcocks road crew fixed the sound to be shite for Joy Division and vastly superior for the Buzzcocks for this two nighter in the capital.
I haven't got a recording of the Buzzcocks set, no-one was interested enough to record that one, so I can't contrast and compare;but it sounds ok to me.Just another element in the mythologizing of Joy Division. However, it is evident that The Buzzcocks were representative of a sound that was ,by 1979, very passé ,and Joy Division was the future, or, a future that never was.

Joy Division - "Winter Gardens, Bournemouth 02/11/1979" (Bootleg)

If Ian Curtis sounded ill on the Guildford bootleg, then he really was ill for this one.Ending the set by collapsing backwards into the drums, being carried off stage and taken to Hospital in an ambulance......not a Crispy Ambulance by the way.
There are some clues as to his condition on this tape; notably the strange guitar playing on 'Love Will tear us Apart', and the strangely incoherent singing in the last two numbers of the set.
As Ian collapsed into the drums there was a Tommy Cooper Moment* as the audience applauded and asked for 'more'??...they obviously thought it was part of the show. Those rock'n'rollers eh?
The Cardiff show the next day was suitably cancelled, but he was back for the Bristol show the day afterwards, like a true professional.
Besides all that, this is a reasonably good audience recording.

*(Tommy died on live TV and the audience laughed thinking it was a joke)

Joy Division - "Electric ballroom,London 26/10/1979" (Bootleg)

This excellent quality audience recording starts off with the two worst JD tunes, but "I remember Nothing"is far darker than the album version; which is more than I can say for JD's 'Hit'."Love will tear us apart" came second to Robbie Williams' "Angels" in a poll to find the best British single of all time???????.....yes "LWTUA" is better than "Angels" at least lyrically, in fact isn't every single ever released better than that simply awful Chav's anthem?
The rest of this gig is slightly above average, despite Ian Curtis going missing for the crescendo of "Day Of The Lords".....he may have been under the weather again. He does sound rather subdued, as if his mind wasn't entirely on the job;so I suspect maybe he'd had, or was going to have, another fit.In hindsight his health situation does add an extra poignancy to this nostalgic trip.Everyone loves a tragedy don't they?....fucking ghouls!
