The Sea Of Wires ‎– "Recordings 1980-82" ( Vinyl-on-demand ‎– VOD131.9/10) 1980-82 / 2014

As we've established in the previous post that Another view weren't from Coventry after all;here's an electronic act who were; The Sea Of Wires. Sounds pretty much like my music office here at Die Or Diy HQ.
There seems to be a few electronic bands from this west Midlands eyesore? I blame it on Tangerine Dreams much lauded gig at Coventry Cathedral in 1975, one of the better modernist buildings in the town. Ironic that a German group played there when it was their parents generation who flattened the original cathedral;the ruins of which are right next door as a reminder.
Sea Of Wires are obviously a very TD or electronic krautrock influenced combo, and ,probably as a belated sorry for destroying their city, a German reissue label has ..coff.....reissued SOW's back catalogue; although with a few tracks missing, but as usual you can find those on this blog.....HERE.
These versions are naturally of superior quality to the cassette tapes,so I have posted these for you to contrast and compare.....personally I prefer the tape versions.
An analogue bubble bath that compares favorably with a hit of morphine.

Various Artists – " Snatch Tapes 2 " (Snatch Tapes ) 1980

A rather special tape here.Snatch 2, featuring ,among others, Graham from Danny and The dressmakers, as The Beach Surgeon, and the usual Snatch suspects, The Alien Brains (the New Blockaders), David Jackman, and The Storm Bugs. There’s an appearance by the Sea Of Wires, with their incorrectly named “2 T’s and a Funny Hat”, which is called an ‘Endless Rainy Day’ on their excellent cassette “Individually Screened”. Spools full of claustrophobic DIY electronica, that sounds like it was recorded under a duvet after midnight, absolutely fantastic.
As with Snatch 1 the tape lists the names of the artists but not the track titles (?). Further details were included on a small booklet sent out with the tape. The Beach Surgeons feature Graham Massey (Danny and the Dressmakers) who went on to fame and (perhaps) fortune as part of 808 State, here he delivers a very humorous soliloquy on the merits of collecting girl’s nail clippings. Vote Police are of course our good friends Storm Bugs.
I’ve tried my best to split it up into tracks, but it is really in the form of a mix-tape, so I’ve supplied two downloads, one split up, and the other as it was originally intended.

Track Listing:
Side A
Orchestral Introduction
Beach Surgeons:
Mannequin Moves:
Vote Police – Our Main Objective:

Side BDavid Jackman – Untitled

Lemon Kittens:
Storm Bugs – Thin Line Flash of Traffic
David Jackman – Pulses

The Sea Of Wires – "Diversions" (SOW 1) 1980

What a timeless electronic duvet this second Sea Of Wires cassette is!
Full of classic warm synth settings, not unlike a solid state volcanic mud pool, pumping out bubbles of sweet sounding ear gases through the smooth hot mud.
This stuff has been tossed aside by an unappreciative public, who preferred their electronica to be made by acne scarred artisans ,like Depeche Mode, with their vests, spiky hair and leather jackets.
Admittedly lacking a pop hook here and there, it is time that The Sea Of Wires were restored to the premier league of the ignored, and…..er….not ignored???
There’s more to life than a catchy pop lyric sung by an emaciated adolescent with questionable sexuality, and even more questionable fashion sense!
You can get the second tape by The Sea Of Wires, “Individually Screened” by clicking Here.

Track Listing:

1. The Man Who Smiles
2. S.O.W.

The Sea Of Wires – Individually Screened (SOW 2 self -released Cassette 1980)

This one from my misty past. I remember posting my blank cassette to the address in sounds DIY corner and receiving this bubbly electronic miesterwerk in return.Coventry, England, synthesizer duo The Sea of Wires were another shadowy outfit from the electronic Dark Ages, those very early 1980s, just as synths started to get smaller and more affordable. Releasing just a few self-released tapes and making a few compilation appearances, they mostly relied on beat-free sequencer pulses with something of a Kraut influence, plus the occasional nod to the past glories of the Radiophonic Workshop. Since this tape is SOW #2, one rather suspects that it had a predecessor(it did, "Diversions"which you can download here!), but information about them is beyond scarce. A few years later and they’d have been on ICR  one suspects, and more widely known and loved. Anyway, enjoy this one at least.
