Various Artists ‎– Love Not Devotion" (Deleted Records ‎– DELP 001/Fuck Off Records ‎– FLP 002) 1982

This is a re-post of a re-ripped Fuck Off/Deleted Records shared album from 1982(at 320k,for those who care); featuring The Instant Automatons, Britpunkfunk combo Blue Midnight, and Street Level super groop The Hambirger All-Stars, featuring various members of Here and Now and Alternative TV, among others.
Blue Midnight are particularly fine, with their brand of punky brass led DIY funk.Like a cross between Pig Bag and early Dexy's sans the awful Kevin Rowland.
The Hambirger All-Stars are also, very fashionably for 1982, Dubbed up, Funky and Punky. A sooper groop of sorts, with 'Here and Now' street hippies Steffy and Grant Showbiz;
Anno, Mark and Dennis from Alternative TV;alomg with someone called Justin Adams from Impossible Dreamers.

Then we have, the late great, Protag and Mark automaton with 6 tracks of Instant Automatons' skewed DIY pop songs on behalf of Deleted Records.Including the classic "Short Haired Man (In a Long Haired Town)".
How can you argue against a line up like that?

Wot a great, and very lost, record!?

Alternative TV/ The Good Missionaries ‎– "Scars On Sunday" (Fuck Off Records WEIRD 1) 1979

Heres ATV's Fuck off tape that catalogues the
transition from ATV to The Good Missionaries.
There's even a nasty sounding riot at the end
of the ATV side. The public could turn violent
if they don't get what they want you know.In
this case they wanted hard hitting punk rock.
Instead they got band members playing each
others instruments, songs with no chorus, or
structure, and no hits!
The elongated silences at the end of each track
make the stunned silence at the end of
Belsen was a Gas, from the pistols last gig,
seem like a nano second.
This is confrontational art at its very best,
and also probably ATV's best album?

Scars On Sunday W001 Spring 79/May 79

SIDE ONE
1. Nasty Little Lonely
2. Release the Natives
3. Radio Story/Lost In Room
4. Fellow Sufferer
5. The Force Is Blind
6. Good Missionary/Total Disregard
 For The Greenwich Theatre
SIDE TWO
1. Bottom Of The World
2. The Good Missionary Goes For a Walk
3. The Morning They Took Me Away
Side one is the penultimate Alternative TV gig at the Greewich Theatre in Spring 1979. It features the very shaky drums of Dave George and vocals from Anno Wombat. Line-up

Mark Perry : vocals/guitar/keyboards/wind instruments/percussion
Dave George : drums/percussion/special effects
Dennis Burns : bass guitar
Anno Wombat : vocals/wind instruments/percussion
Side two is the very first Good Missionary concert in "Bottom Of The World" a jam recorded at the "Gig of the century" in the Lyceum ballroom May 1979. The other two numbers are also largely improvised and were recorded on the "Pop Group" tour summer 1979.

Mark Perry : vocals/guitar/wind instruments
Dave George : guitar/vocals/chime bars/effects
Dennis Burns : bass guitar
Gillian Hanna : vocals/wind instruments/percussion
Suze Da Blooz : vocals/wind instruments/percussion
Anno Wombat : vocals/wind instruments/percussion
Henry Badowski : drums/saxophone
CAUTION!
This is the first in Fuck Off records "Weird Experiments In Noise" collection and is a serious attempt to blow your mind with sound. As you may have noticed the long drawn out 'hypnotic' pieces (otherwise known as the boring bits) are necessary to bring out the sheer power of the noisy bits inherent in this type of music. While every attempt is made to ensure perfect audio reproduction, we must admit we quite enjoy that 'fucked up' sound. The Good Missionaries is a natural progression from Alternative TV. ATV in the beginning were a pretty hard hitting if not intriguing sort of punk group. However as time has passed, various members have joined and left the band until the final line up (recorded on side one) decided that the music had changed so much and lots of people were still coming to the gigs expecting the older line ups, that changing the name would be a good idea. About the time of this penultimate gig the music had got so weird that hardcore heavy punks had taken to throwing bottles at the band, on one occasion Mark was knocked unconscious by one, and during side one the tension in the air is easy to spot, as is the final destruction of the equipment by band and audience alike, after the PA is switched off mid-set. Side two starts with a jam recorded on the first Good Missionaries gig, a tentative affair where the group performed in masks, it was all meant as a bit of a laugh really but the band enjoyed the relief from not having a name to live up to, subsequently the content is less strained. The rest of side two feature two performances on the most recent Pop Group tour featuring the newest line-up. These additions and changes aid Mark in his former capacity as lead instrumentalist by stopping up a lot of gaps he used to have to run around the stage to fill all by himself. And generally I think it will be agreed that these later recordings show the band at their most relaxed and productive to date.

Various Artistes ‎– "Back To Sing For Free Again Soon" (Fuck Off Records – F.O. 001) 1979

http://www.mediafire.com/download/liieq9lclnd7e8k/Back_Again_To_Sing_For_Free_Again_Soon.zip

Here we have, in a limited edition of 5 Million, catalogue number Fuck Off 1 (yes, the first Fuck Off Records release!); “Back Again To Sing For Free Again Soon. The fabled compilation from the beyond great Fuck Off records from UK DIY's year zero. Now re-edited and remastered in 320kbps.

Side one (Slightly Sanesville), kicks off with a 21st century Glastonbury act  from 1979? It's the unbelievably

awful Dick Heley; who was an unwelcome manifestation of the kind of earnest young man with acoustic guitar that still plagues modern pop deep into the teenies of century 21! Its the kind of crap that makes one want to punch some fucker and beat them to death with one of Mumford and son's fucking banjo's! (Growl!)

It gets worse, because he seems to have three tracks rather than the two listed on the insert....Ouch!

It make it slightly better, three tracks from free festival stalwarts “The Astronauts” repair the damage somewhat with some lyrically aware nu folk with a punk rock slant. Never really my cup of tea,but after the first three tracks they almost sound like the first time I heard Joy Division.

Then, “Fuck Me!”, its that Dick Heley AGAIN!....this time backed up by the half-decent Prog of Blankspace, so its not so shit this time!

Moving swiftly on, this compilation really starts cooking with the proto-indie anti-pop classic from the Anal Surgeons, “Where's That Fag”; referring more to the personal servant tradition in English public schools* called a “Fag” rather than a cigarette or a Homosexual.(Although homosexual could apply to public schools also, as being arse raped is a rite of passage, or back passage, in these despicable factories for the Illuminatti; burn the fucking places down!....ps, its funny how the word illuminatti is never in any spell-check programme?).

The Dog Ends remind me of the more annoying moments from the Missing persons cassettes. They probably are missing persons....mentally I mean.

After the extra track not listed on the insert, of a sing-a-long version of “Jungle bells by persons unknown, we get an exclusive track from the fantastic “Vibing Up the Senile Man “ era Alternative TV. A brilliant audience losing, noise improvisation on piano, radio, guitar, and drum machine, called “Terrified of Dogs”. Its hard to describe how great ATV were in 1979,but this piece sums it all up very concisely indeed.

Side two (Crazytown), starts with the wilful stupidity of uber-dumb manc punk band, Wilful Damage. Famed for the singer being thrown offstage at the legendary Deeply Dale Free Festival 1978, by the king of “TeePee People”, who said that he would personally stop any of these “Punk” from playing. Mr Wilful Damage consequently broke his arm in the fall, but returned to finish the set. The crowd were suitably Impressed, and probably turned quite a few 'Hippies' over to the cause; probably including certain members of Here and Now,who, as we know, started Fuck Off records.

The band itself is classic thoughtless Punk mimicry, and the introductions between the tunes, in a moronic Lancastrian accent, are hilarious.

OMG, its Danny and theDressmakers!(giggle)

They turn me into a silly teenager again everytime I hear them!

DATD are worth a small essay describing how fucking perfect they are. I do have ambitions one day to create a Vinyl on Demand style Box Set containing all this wonderful groups major works.I may give that crowd-funding thing a go,is anyone interested in contributing a tenner?

Dream the dream!

To finish off, we are hit by the revelation that there were musicians in 1979! Seventh Angel's jazz-prog opus is superb,as is Blankspace's floyd style prog closer.

Is the ZeePee Silence Orchestra those TeePee chaps who attacked our mate from Wilful Damage? And were they called the ZeePee people after all??

Anyway, their track is, predictably, an Amon Duul 1 / Hawkwind hybrid, but nevertheless pretty entertaining.

Planet Gong......mmmmm.......I hate to say it,but I like their track rather too much!

I'll leave you with the parting words of Danny and the Dressmakers from the Deeply Dale Festival 1979:

“We were Planet Gon-g, goodbye!”

Alternative TV - "Strange Kicks" (I.R.S. Records SP70023) 1981

Well, I now bring to an end this weeks series of  releases from Mark Perry and his chums, with the unjustly overlooked "Strange Kicks".
Its gotta be one of the best album covers of the punk era, a cynical pastiche of a pop album cover, it could almost be Wham!;and it wouldn't surprise me if some 80's pop fans bought this by some tragic mistake.("Daddy that man can't sing properly!")
Those duped pop fans were not far off the beam, for this is ATV's 'Pop' album; and don't we wish pop was like this? I suppose it was all part of the trend of the time, after the abject failure of Punk rock to subvert and corrupt the music industry, to sabotage from within,to appear 'normal' but secretly slip the message into what appeared and sounded like pop music. The fire Engines tried it with their pop alter-ego, Win, the Associates did it superbly, and ATV tried and failed with the fantastic "Strange Kicks". Alex Fergusson, had been working on this angle, after leaving ATV for a while, and rejoined with an armful of these Pop Songs. Something he would bring with him when he formed Psychic TV, and gave us the surreal sight and sound of Genesis p. Orridge singing a sweet lovey dovey song; you gotta check out 'Just Drifting (for caresse)' from 'Force the hand of Chance'......a terrible love song ,that sounds like the mentally ill cousin of 'the Windmills of your Mind'; hilarious, and another work of cynical genius.(apparently Gen,Alex and Sleazy absolutely pissed themselves whilst recording that.....and why not?).
(And don't forget Fergusson's sublime 'pop' single with Dorothy)
Link
Of course, when it was released, the Elitist within me missed the point, and i hated it......as did many others. But after re-discovering it, its up there with other great 'sell-out' records, like Captain Beefheart's 'Clear Spot' , 'Unconditionally Guaranteed' and ' Bluejeans and Moonbeams'; PiL had a go with 'The Commercial Zone' and 'Live in Tokyo', that was conceptually fine, but musically a disaster that Lydon never recovered from.

I can't stop singing "Mirror Boy":

"Gillian says, 'half of Bedford was there.'
Rotten place with white crap for walls.
No rain,no snowy snowy scenes,
Just Burnt backs and ambre Solaire."

Such poetry, especially Perry's South London twang on the Ambre Solaire rhyme. Sublime.
I could easily see that tune as a bona-fide hit in the normal top thirty.

Alternative TV - "The Force Is Blind" (Deptford Fun City dfc10) 1979

Post Senile Man single, but recorded at the same time, marked the end of ATV mark 2.
Punk without the Rock; non rhythmic improv, an atonal spidery drone, the very antithesis of what a single 'should' be about; no catchy tunes or rousing rock structures here.
"Lost in a Room" is more trad DIY Post punk, but still standing proud with wilful amateurism. One of thee great Groups of any era.

Mark Perry - "Snappy Turns" (Deptford Fun City 1980)

The fabled 'solo' lp from Mark Perry.Recorded at Street level in the summer of 1980 has several of the known Perry associates helping out with the recording. Dennis Burns, Nag, Tyrone Thomas, Anno and Grant Showbiz. The tracks are great, although ‘The Object Is Love’, ‘You Know’ and ‘At War’ are the stand out tracks.
But its another brave example of Perry's anti-rock stance of the time. He must have endured a tumult of slagging for these records, which makes them sound even better for it.
A Superb ramshackle glorification of amateurism, topped off with perrys brand of faux-naive poetry which is both at once endearing and challenging. Another classic!

Mark Perry ‎– "Whole World's Down On Me / I Live - He Dies" (Deptford Fun City ‎– DFC 12) 1980

Everybody from 1977 to 82 did it, so why not Mark P?
That's correct, White boy punky reggae makes an appearance in the Alternative TV camp. Its a pretty honest attempt , and at least there's no mention of 'Jah', or mastering of those loose Jamaican rhythms like The Clash or The Ruts. It retains that essential naïveté that sets Mark Perry's projects apart from those awful musician types.I love the way the beat count wavers like a stretched tape, almost losing syncopation with the superb non-reggae reggae drumming of Mr Bendle.Someone should have played this to the Police to teach these fake-punkers how to do White Boy Reggae properly (although that means Gordon and the boys wouldn't have had any hits.......Oh what a wonderful dream?)
The B-side, however is quite splendid, classic Perry-esque poetry set to a classic "Vibing up the Senile Man" ,free for all, improvised backing.Excellent scraping violin provided by Anno (Androids of Mu, and Here and Now), and great falling apart drums from the one and only Bendle (Door and the Window).
All recorded at the Abbey Road of DIY, Street Level, under the auspices of the George Martin of DIY, Grant Showbiz.

Mark Perry and Dennis Burns - "You Cry Your Tears" (NB Records NB7) 1980

Just have a butchers at that photo of Mark .P on the sleeve of this single. The mirror-image of a 'Popstar'. Slightly chubby, dirty old school jumper, looking miserable, diy haircut, hands in pockets.....its enough to give an A&R man an anxiety attack. The A&R man continues: "They can't sing, can't play their instruments, its not a proper recording, and the songs aren't happy enough.".....wrong on all counts mr. Fictional A&R man, you're gonna lose your job soon anyway when your poxy record company goes bankrupt. And when they do i'll play this single to celebrate; fucking cultural fascists that they are. This single is from an honest place, its folk music, its real, and Bendle and Anno play...Weebles???...on it? Are these the egg shaped toys that wobble but they don't fall down?......if John Cage incorporated Weebles in one of his conceptual pieces with prepared piano,we'd all be praising his undoubted genius; but because its Mark "school of the streets" Perry, this innovation is forgotten.
But, its no longer forgotten,as its a work of great power and charm, which exists in its own bubble in space, deserving, but not asking, to be loved......so love it!......and then check out the Mark Perry solo album.

The Good Missionaries - "Fire From Heaven" (Deptford Fun City DLP04) 1979

mmmmm......Punk Rock........that's a funny one.
Don't wanna get on my High Horse, but, one has opinions, and i'm gonna air them.
Am I wrong,or was 'Punk Rock' about rejecting the old order, and to strive for creative and personal freedom?
This 'personal freedom' may include having a Travis Bickle haircut, wearing expensive leather trousers, biker jackets with 'UK Subs' painted on the back, and generally to be in Discharge; but, this,to me, seems like an intellectual dead end.
Alternatively, one could try to sound and look as little like the Sex Pistols as possible. This route represents an honest attempt to follow the original concept of the movement, and that is, not to follow movements, turn at right angles to the flow, do the opposite of expectations.
"Action,Time,Vision."; ...good '77 style punk rocker anthem right? What do normal celebrity seeking pop groups do?....Yes,"Action,Time,Vision,part deux",then trois etc.....then you're a star.
If You wanna be a rock'n'roll star, endlessly repeating yourself, almost guarantees stardom. This despicable route is well trodden, and has most effectively een used by the uber-despicable U fucking desperately awful 2.
We could have all been wearing ATV t-shirts by now,but no,they decided not to do what 99% of punk rockers tried to do,and go in a totally non-rock direction.
De-constructed versions of ATV classics sit side by side with free-form versions of the already free-form tunes on "Vibing Up The senile Man" .
Beef this up with the odd improvisation,as the band swapped instruments to keep the technique rudimentary, to avoid being accused of the terrible sin of 'Musicianship'.
Coupled with a sartorial dress sense that made the Subway Sect look like Spandau Ballet, and you've got yourself a genuine forward looking 'Punk' group; although in the true sense of it all, no 'Punk' group would ever call themselves a 'Punk' group!
This recording represents an artist at the very peak of its near-misanthropic capabilities of alienation; which exposed the psychotic, needy, nature of 'Fans', who seem to think that the artist owes them something; and should only deliver the 'popular' tunes; which is as unhealthy in pop music as it is in politics.
"Fire From Heaven" is an obvious reference to Mark Perry's interest at the time in the free jazz of the sixties, like Archie Shepp, who's album "Fire Music" explains how these 60's New wave Jazzers attempted to channel music from a higher place, by intuition rather than intellect. This concept is definately achieved effortlessly by Mark Perry's post-punk era collective; fire from Heaven indeed!
Among the many sonic highlights on the god-like disc,we are treated to a shambolic version of the Pop Group classic,"Thief of Fire", with the one and only Mark Stewart guesting on vocals.LinkAs headlining act on this tour (the Animal Instincts Tour 1979),The Pop Group were very used to disembowelling their own work; so to do it with the very unpopular support act, wins them the highest possible Die or DIY inspiration award.

The The Good Missionaries ‎– "Vibing Up The Senile World...... (Unnormality Records NORM001) 1980

Basically, there is no better group than The Good Missionaries. There are no truer punks than The Good Missionaries, and thirdly, there is no better group than the Good Missionaries......do I make myself clear?

Its not everyone’s cup of tea; comments like, "They can't play their instruments"(said in a girly voice), or "They don't have any songs"(said in an even girlier voice) for example, are common place amongst the brainwashed throng that calls itself the record buying public. This is 'Free' music, in the tradition of Albert Ayler and ESP records. This is true 'Punk' spirit. Something that was not recognised by the mohican army of 1980, who couldn't understand why ATV don't play "Action,Time and Vision" anymore. This fact made them violent towards said group, due to their small world being challenged when all they wanted to do was pogo to some rock toon.

"Vibing up the Senile Man" album, is probably joint first place 'Attitude' record alongside 'Pil's "First Issue" and Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music". Listen to these records kids to learn how to do it......not shit like Nir(yaaawwwwn)vana and their Rock Bore relations(snooze).

Alternative TV - "The Radio Sessions" (1977-81)

How great were ATV?......the answer can be found in the form of their peel session from 1978.
Ignore the last track from Bangkok radio (uh?)...which sort of wipes out any progress Mark P made up to 81, a boring return to normal rock and roll.
Tracks 5-11 are what prog rock should have evolved into if they sacked off the public school boys. The outer limits of "Good" is what this is.
Remember......the "punks" wanted to hurt mark for making this music......he did this for YOU!

Tracks 1-4 is from Peel Session, December 1977, tracks 5-8 from Peel Session, July 1978, tracks 9-11 from Street Level Radio 1981 and track 12 is from Bangkok Radio?????? 1986.

Alternative TV - "The Industrial Sessions 1977" - (Overground Records OVER49CD) 1996

A criminally out of print, and rare, compact disc of the sessions an early version of Alternative TV did with the chaps from Throbbing Gristle HQ. I say compact disc but it sounds like its a cassette tape, which is ok by me. The tunes archived within the binary codes of this disc are rudimentary to say the least, and make the Door and The Window sound like Rick Wakeman's Yes.(a slight exaggeration, and not the insult that it usually is). There are also a few numbers that never made it beyond some early ATV performances, like "British Kids" and "Never Saw The Blitzkrieg".
Also intriguing is how crap was this recording at TG's Death Factory was! Oversaw by Chris Carter and Genesis, was this really the same 8-track recorder that recorded "The Bridge" by Rental and Leer, and "20 Jazz Funk Greats"?...or is it the Revox that did 2nd Annual report, which is more likely.......but it sounds so tinny compared to that magnum opus! Who cares anyway, this is how a DIY punk band should sound, like a field recording of some barely formed wild animals, as they crawl from their lair. Great Stuff.

Alternative TV - "Vibing Up The Senile Man (part one)" (Deptford Fun City DLP3) 1979

OOOOOOO this caused a lot of trouble.Made people angry this did. Especially those open minded chaps.....the "Punks". In fact it exposed so-called "punks" as probably some of the most closed minded fools that there ever were!
The safety net of rock was ejected totally for an semi-improvised live sound, where band members played instruments they were unfamiliar with, at live gigs they even drew lots to see who played what. Of course this caused riots, and Mark Perry was in fact knocked unconscious on a couple of occasions by missiles threw from the crowd. This led to a change of name to "The Good Missionaries" on the Animal instinct tour with the Pop Group.
This is confrontational music, challenging and uncompromising. This is a different group to the one that recorded Action Time and Vision, and other punk anthems.Love It!

Another peerless Mark Perry related release, this time accompanied by Nag(The Door and the Window), Karl Blake (Lemon Kittens),as well as Dennis Burns(The Good missionaries),and Paul Platypus(Doof).
Not quite up to the standard of The Reflections LP, "Slugs and Toads", but still high on quality anti-rock non-musicianship of the highest standard.
Of note,it is nice to see uber-weirdo Karl Blake try his considerable skills in crafting an alternative dimension pop tune with the genius's of the genre/non-genre, nag and Perry.

Anyone remember Blind Faith? Well this is the DIY equivalent, the nearest DIY land ever got to a super group.Dennis Burns and Mark Perry from ATV or The Good Missionaries,Karl Blake from The Lemon Kittens, and The legend that is Nag,from The Door and the Window. If that wasn't enough, the sleeve was designed by Danielle Dax!
The music ,bizarrely enough sounds like that of all the aforementioned bands,but....erm ...different. There's a hint of the pop song about it,and in this case its a good thing, 'cus it works.A great album indeed, even the cover version of Rocky Erickson's "Interpreter" is great, aided greatly by the dulcet tones of Mark Perry. An overlooked classic of the genre methinks.(click on the mp3 sample of tightrope walker for a taster)
