Manuel Göttsching – "E2-E4" (Inteam GmbH – ID 20.004) 1984

Look backwards from any point in time up to 1970,and some clever dick will always find a long lost Krautrock classic waiting to be hauled up the flag poll as the inventor of any number of Influential,Seminal, or any amount of flattering  superlatives applied to heavily lauded albums such as this, which obviously was Trance before Trance.
Then again, sift backwards trough the marshlands of Kraut, and we can find tracks like the nine adorning this, on most of those Gate-folded Kosmische classics, like Klaus Schulz, Tangerine Dream, ,and various Ex-members of Tangerine Dream, like Klaus Schulz. In fact TD  could and should also be extremely guilty for thousands of British Ravers idiot dancing the week away in some obscure Cow field in Essex, near an exit off the M25 (aka The Magic Roundabout), back in 1988 before the UK Government made it highly illegal. What the Cows did during this process is a mystery, but there was a rumour that a Frisian and an Aberdeen Angus were seen dancing to the moozic, E'd Up, in front of the DJ on one occasion at least .
The difference between Manuel Göttsching and Edgar Froese is that Manuel had a drum machine, and Eddie didn't. Therefore  Göttsching Göt the prize....he,by logical elimination, was guilty of being Trance before Trance.Whether that's anything to brag about is another matter altogether.

Various Artists– "Street Sounds Electro 6" (Street Sounds – ELCST 6) 1984

"The Roxanne Wars", as these call and response rap songs on side one are known as,featuring a 14 year old Female old school Rapper called....you guessed it "Roxanne".She took it on herself to challenge UTFO's hit tune "Roxanne, Roxanne".Of which there were over one hundred response Raps by Herself and various pseudonymous artists.Likely to avoid the authorities causing problems over Roxannes's tender age.Almost a concept albums worth of fem-rap featuring a teenage rapper trying her best to avoid sounding like a kid on Sesame Street doing a rap about the number 'Nine' and the letter 'A'......something I think would enjoy almost as much as her cutesy battles with UTFO.
This one's one of the better releases in the 'Electro' series.
The Rapping doesn't get on yer Titz, plenty vocoder, Human Beat Boxing ,Scratching, gated Reverb, and even some early Bleep-core deep in the mix.
"All the Freaks come out at night" says Whodini......except Roxanne who was too old anyway for Trump,to protect her from Geoffrey Epstein......if you're reading this years later, Epstein was a human trafficker who supplied young ladies for the Rich,Stupid and Powerful, which brought down the Trump administration when some formerly redacted files were found to have photographs of President Trump in Inflagrante delicto with several teenage girls...not Roxanne I'm pleased to say(I Hope anyway!),....and one young boy, who, who was clearly being sodomised by the Orange Monster himself.....cus that's what his Daddy ,Freddie, did to him when he was a little innocent Moron.....as alleged by Donald's Sister Mary Trump.......it's true of course.

Tracklist:

1. UTFO–Roxanne, Roxanne
2.The Real Roxanne With UTFO–The Real Roxanne
3.Capt. Rock– Cosmic Blast
4.Roxanne Shanté– Roxanne's Revenge
5.Whodini– Freaks Come Out At Night

Various Artists – "Street Sounds Electro 5" (Street Sounds – ELCST 5)1984)

Unfortunately ,there's too much of that 'old Skool' rapping that sounds like a Caucasian office worker getting down with the groove at the office Christmas Party, not unlike David Brent doing some street dance for charity in The Office...original version. Fusing Flashdance with MC Hammer Shit yeah? (David Brents words not mine!)
But at least its quaint and not the kind of hate speech that passes for Rap during the last three decades.
There be a half decent Arthur Baker tchoon, that's fitting for a former New Order collaborator,it just lack's a Peter Hook.
We also got some proto-turntablism from the Knights of the Turntables for your Dad to shape some breaks to.
Some nonsense from Capt Rock's bordering on Novelty Track status, with more of that Office Party style Rapping again.
Ending with the best track on the whole disk, "B Boys Breakdance" by The High Fidelity Three.

Tracklist:

1.Great Peso & Mr. Nasty– It's Time To Rock
2.Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde– Fast Life
3.Knights Of The Turntables– Techno Scratch
4.The Egyptian Lover – Egypt Egypt
5.Arthur Baker– Breakers Revenge
6.Captain Rock– Capt. Rock To The Future Shock
7.Aleem– Release Yourself
8.Fantasy Three– The Buck Stops Here

Various Artists – Street Sounds Electro 4 (Street Sounds – ELCST 4) 1984

Oi! Careful who you calling a sucker you Cheeky Fuckers!
I'll piss on your fucking silly Trilby's
Run-DMC had the,... not-so....,Bright idea of fusing Hip Hop with white Rock.
At the time (1983) I was blissfully innocent of Aerosmith's existence and the pure liquid evil of their frankly Fucking awful sub-Zep rip off of Led Zep.Who the fuck was that dick breaking through the wall on the set of the "Walk This Way" video. This Cunt was allegedly exceedingly famous on American FM (stands for Fuck me!) radio.Nestling, all cosey-like,in the sweaty armpits of Page and Plant. In between shagging under-age girls, and bumming a few easily impressed male American idiots.
I Humbly apologize to America that four English sex abusers were allowed to come over to your fine land and wreak such unforgivable havoc......er...well....on second thoughts, i'm not sorry at all actually. They can all go Fuck themselves, which they probably do.
Remember this is the land of Harvey Wankstain and Geoffrey Underpant Stain after all.Not forgetting Human Trafficker and honorary american idiotesse Jisslaine Max Swell.....most of whom were arrested for....wait for it....handling Swollen Goods;-)
So RUN-DMC are indeed the inspiration, if inspiration is the appropriate word for the downright blight on humanity for such unholy Hybrids as Funky Metal,Rap Metal,Limp Biscuit and the Bestiality Boys early years...Just think, no Fred Durst!..(sigh)...I hear no apology,or invoking of the fifth amendment right to silence on the grounds that Donald Trump may incriminate himself.. I wish someone had invoked the Right To Silence when Aerosmith came through that cardboard wall back in '86.
Apart from the unfortunate influence of RUN-DMC.....what are they doing on this comp anyway?.....we get three of yer DJ's standard stunts, three times,....yes the MEGAMIX! One of 'em done for us by none other than the godfather's cousin's best mate of Electro himself...Herbie Handoncock.
This one,Electro 4, sounds a tad more charty than the others in the series, but certainly still gets those toes-a-tapping.....if you're drunk enough.

Tracklist:

A1 Steps Ahead– Radio Active 6:45
A2 Pumpkin & The Profile All-Stars–Here Comes That Beat! 6:50

Various Artists - "Streetsounds Electro 3 (Street Sounds – ELCST 3) 1984

More from the Cambrian Oceans of Old Skool Hip Hop,from before they....the Rap-Singers ....regularly called out the Female of this species as "Ho's" and "Bitches".I'm almost done analyzing the role of the Internet in creating this phenomenon of the INCEL in modern day society.
If you didn't know already, INCEL, the acronym, stands for Involuntarily Celibate. These Icel's ,to say the least, don't hold the Sisters in very high regard, mainly for denying them as much sex as they can get, without so much as a 'Thank You young lady. They then blame the ladies for this, and I have a strong suspicion that 21st century Rap Singers are indeed involuntarily and ,yes,...celibate. The cause of this is the unnatural habitat of the Internet ,where these frustrated rappers congregate in facebook groups, and worship such dickweeds as Andrew Tate. They never had this problem in the Old Skool of Rap,they got all the voluntary sex they needed, and as a consequence lacked that modern need for violence, both passive, and  aggressive to prove their manhood through a general display of unbridled Misogyny. None of that shit in the Old Skool......well....not much anyway.....in fact lets just say there was Less of that back in the day. Also a less liberal use of the N-Word.
I suppose we could call this glaring difference between the two 'Rap' epochs, charmingly Innocent,or naive?
I have little or zero interest in post 1990's Hip-Hop and Rap.Basically it had reached its very low bar for creativity by the mid-90's.Bores the Shit out of me.
Personally, I prefer the tracks that don't have a Rapper...careful how you spell that one. "You've seen 'em,on the top of the pops, the Rapers, you know, you've seen 'em about, down by the multi-story, round the back of the corn exchange?.....the Rapers?......No?"......the Rap Singers.

Necrophagia – "Death Is Fun" (Self-Released-cassette) 1984

Yes indeed, I've heard that Death can be Fun, but i am assured that it can be NOT Fun also? In fact, mostly Not Fun.
Zero-Fi Death Metalers Necrophagia, tend to err on the Not Fun side of things, aurally speaking, yet certainly on the FUN side of things conceptually.
Sonically speaking, "Death is Fun's" nearest relatives are Dragnet era Fall, and the Mentally Ill although I think that The Mentally Ill are far more morally bankrupt than...well....anyone in Death Metal.

Possessed – "Death Metal" (Self-Released) 1984

Is this the group what gave Death Metal it's name? Probably not,but they seem a bit too musicianly for my taste, and a bit too Thrashy .But, hey, i'm being far too picky here. However, a thick layer of turgid ferric oxide smog on this recording would have increased their Shit-Fi credibility skywards. This should have been an ejaculation from the sulphur pits of Jesus, but Satan had a day off that week, and the band sneaked into the proper recording studio.Well, being on duty for eternity in Hell, surely Lucifer, and what other names he/she/it goes by, deserves a day off every now and again. He certainly was on duty for Death's debut cassette anyway.Dunno if Obama's barmy army used it for torture in Guantanamo Bay,but i'd tell them everything if they threatened to stop playing all that Death Metal.

Death – "Death By Metal" (Self-Released) 1984

Well, that's enough NWOBHM for anyone innit?
Everyone here know's that I dig the shitty end of the stick, so its time for some Shit-Fi Death Metal, which frankly makes most NWOBHM sound like The Smurfs. This is an early cassette from Floridian Death Metal group called, definitively...er....Death,formerly Mantas. It sounds like a fatal gang rape with its victim dragged backwards through a swamp of flesh slicing thorns to a waiting shallow grave. The very opposite to I Spit On Your Grave, this is a place where the Graves Spit On YOU!
Speaking for myself, this is how Metal should sound, morally bankrupt and recorded beneath the liquefied mud of a freshly violated Tomb.
Where Dolby noise reduction fears to tread.

Tracklist:

A2 Evil Dead 3:11

Various Artists – "It's Unheard Of (14 Full Power Heavy Metal / Rock Tracks ...)"- (Sane Records – SANE 002) 1984

A rather more obscure NWOBHM collection from Sane Records, who put out a couple of other sister compilations in their short tenure, one being a Punky effort, and the other a minimal synth classic, both of which are featured on this lovely blog......just click the clicky blue bits and you'll be taken there.
This 14 tracker has a wide cross-section of British metal, leaning towards a poppy orientation.Surprisingly, nothing actually made me laugh until track 12, "Encounter" by Sapphire. The first words of this dreadful Ballad give you a clue,.... "She was my lady",who had unfortunately died some time before of an unrevealed illness...either that or she fell off his Honda C-50 while riding pillion to a Sapphire Gig ,its not clear. The songs timescale isn't obvious and this was his tribute to his dead lover, apparently "She was the only one"....ahhhh,i'm welling up.
I can see several pairs of spandex tights cladding these very misguided young men with large hairdos.I'm thinking Hair Metal here,or Glam, as we more sensibly called it in the UK.
It gets a bit scratchy towards the end, sorry, but its all in the best possible dodgy taste but largely all good fun

Various Artists – "Eat The Rich : A Benefit Tape For War On Want" (Anal Probe – 003) 1984

There's a certain Nazi's care about the impoverished kinda of vibe going down here.
I'm certain there was little or no funds raised from this lo-fi mish mash of dark
bedsit land dwelling noise-niks. Its like those geezers who prowl the streets on
'Children In Need' Day with a Bucket collecting donations, then pop down the pub to
spend the 'winnings'; but i have strong reservations whether this so-called benefit
'War tape for 'War on Want'raised enough for half a lager, never mind helping Kids
with Cancer. Its probably a not so clever attempt to make the Industrial artists
on here look more
acceptable to decent society. Just what War On Want need is a
Charity record on 'Anal Probe' records...especially on Children In Need Night?
What is acceptable to these ears,is the cotton wool in the ears muffled sound quality
so beloved in the offices of 'Die or DIY?'.The ferric Oxide coated playback heads
of your cassette player will love you for it. Especially enhancing the terrible UK82
contributions from Society's Victims, making it even crapper than it was in 1984.
There's a few pretty ordinary but dull and dampened industrial droning soundscapes
that please the ear, even with the ear plugs out, and the traditional appearance
of BBC sound Effects volume 2,"Marching Soldiers(120bpm)"...yes the exact same one that was
used on "Holidays In The Sun".Only outscored by " Breaking Glass",also on volume 2.
A favourite for DIY Industrial acts everywhere.
UnKommuniti had some chap from geek miesters Stereo Lab as a member,if you're
interested, which you're probably not.Just filling up the space with meaningless
factoids. Mass In Black sounded quite good anyway.
Finishing on a comforting note:
We will get our chance to Eat The Rich soon enough, when they are dragged out of their Bunkers
by their own security staff, and turned over, Alive, to the baying mob.
ENJOY!

Paul Kelday – "Dreamscape" (Self released C-46) 1984

This self released C-46 by late great electronic hermit Paul Kelday is called "Dreamscape",which is not a wholly unexpected  experience as it consists of two darkly ambient Dreamscapes on different halves of the width of a cassette tape.
Dunno what i've said before about Kelday's widely distributed yet totally obscure work, but there is plenty of it on here....just do a search,as i'm sure you're aware of,or click here.
There exists a photo here and there of the man himself, and on at least one of them Paul is a dead ringer for David Koresh.......I always try to get a link in for Dave from time to time. However, I would much prefer the Wacko's from Waco got down to some Paul Kelday inspired dark ambient rather than the soft rustbelt metal that Dave 'call me Jesus' Koresh prefered as his medium for spreading the gospel, never mind cajoling his harem of  Mary's to spread their legs and lose their virginity yet again, in an industrial scale bout of parthenogenesis ...usually watched proudly by the ranches' (why do they always live in Ranches?) own stable of quietly weeping cuckolded Joseph's.

Koresh

Kelday

That said, at great risk to my health....there were survivors, and they think i'm an asshole apparently.

If this was made by some long-haired West-German in 1971, it would have attained legendary status by now....still, not too late.....unless you're David Koresh
This is also available on YouTube by the way.

Deef – "Real Control" (Mass Record) 1984

Starting with a sentiment that we can all agree on, this bunch of brutal Japanese Punk Rockers takes no prisoners, play it loud until you too become Deef.
Old Punk Rocker Heroes such as the terminally awful John Lydon, are almost as bad as their fans, and should do us all a favor and voluntarily turn themselves in at the sadly fictional local extermination camps for gobshite Rockers.
Turning from enemy of the state number one, into housewives favourite, never before have we heard such self-congratulatory verbal vomit as we have in the last decade or so from Neil Young's Punk of preference (says it all dunnit?).Unfortunately,Johnny didn't heed Neil's sadvice and proceeded to fade away rather than burn out.. Having said that I would still turn into a giggling fan boy if by some quirk of reverse indefference I should ever meet Him; He having such a deep influence on the teenage Zchivago,a nose in front of William Shatner and Steve Priest(RIP) would reduce me to a sweating nervous titter should I ever, in earth as it is in Heaven? My Dignity strewn among the wreckage of my free-falling self esteem.
Like a Doubting Thomas of the as-yet unwritten Rock'n'Roll Bible, I have often denied any knowledge of J. Rotten's existence;a Judgement mainly based the endless toe-curling clap-trap this arrogant gob-shite proudly continues to spew forth from 1981 until the present day!? And the public and the dodgier corners of the Media  take it seriously as if this Tubby Tory Tosser is some kind of populist philosopher!? Like his best mate Piers Morgen who would splash a spray of spittle soaked Sycophancy in the general direction of Rottens Arse, whilst exclaiming that he had bought "Never Mind The Bollocks" as a privately educated Yoof..When I die I would love my ashes to be scattered in Peirs Morgans' eyes.
There are similar dick-eads too numerous to list here of course, eg Cave, Geldof.....are they not the same person?....and many others, all of which should have become a noble recluse ,not unlike the Great Syd Barrett, whom I am told was one of Lydon's many influences!???
Then we have the Rebellion Festival look,of beer bellies, fading Tat's,bald heads, shorts and training shoes.Waddling to the Cockney Rejects, reminiscing about their fantasy gig list.Ahhh the night that the UK Subs came to town.
There's a youtube interview with the least stupid member of Spandau Ballet, who went to the Pistol's Screen On The Green show, like I wasn't there too. He saw the Pistol's ,aged 14,and formed Spandau Ballet the next day!?.....let's analyse that for a second? He saw the Sex Pistols and Formed Spandau Ballet? He really couldn't have been listening!?...or there at all, like the thousands who reckon they were.
One always meet these people down the pub and similar social outings, who can't wait to tell you that they're an aging "Punk"?...(If you're a Punk, mate, I certainly ain't). They talk about these fictitious gig nights like they were actually in the Band, and use words like "important" and "crucial"and how they formed a band the next day after seeing 'The Pistols'.
Well, Deef probably have beer bellies forty years on too,but as they are Japanese they're probably genetically slim still;but I'm sure they aren't still touring like The UK Subs...nobodies that irrelevant...surely?
So,"We kill all Punk Rock Heroes"....yes even Gary Kemp, the criminal who wrote "Gold"....cus' he was there you'know...and we weren't.

Enski Boski – "I Found Jesus In A Gay Bar" (Hamster Records And Tapes – HAM 13) 1984

Sorry for a prolonged absence on my part, but, these guys are just Krazy.
It sounds like the music a mom's basement dwelling guy with ADHD would send to the recording arm of Sony, fully expecting a lucrative contract in response. A sort of a less processable version of mid-period Associates, but with a mentally ill version of that bloke from Spandau Ballet crooning away instead of Billy Mackenzie; albeit with better song titles.
Whether Enski received the cleansing qualities of the Holy Spirit and accepted it as his own personal saviour is unclear.Or, as more likely, he actually found the son of god cruising for cock in in a Soho gay bar around the time that AIDS was becoming really popular. This would explain the presence of the Son Of God in yer actual Gay Bar,personally helping spread the virus person to person;or should i say Deity-to-Deity.
God himself ,as stated in his manifesto, doesn't have much time for Gay versions of his likeness, even though he allegedly created everything himself(?),also one would not be shocked to discover that he magicked up a lethal virus aimed at promiscuous homosexuals, and wanton womanhood to remove them from his DIY planet. That should teach them a lesson alright.
Rather than just conjure up a virus from nowhere, Jesus, being more moralistic than his dad, took the more virtuous route to mass murder, by actually stuffing his unprotected holy Phallus Dei up as many Gays as possible......a more hands on, pants down affair one could suggest?
Or, Enski Boski could just be making it all up,taking inspiration from many a 'Holy' book filed in the Fiction Section at your local LGBTQ+ library.
Looking at other releases on this Terry Burrows (Jung Analysts) dominated label, there is an impossible to find compilation cassette called "If God Had Meant Us To Dance He Would Have Given Us Legs", which I think sums up everything very nicely.

Various Artists – "Neo Punk Disordery / ADK Omnibus Vol.2" (ADK Records – ADK-08E) 1984

Punk Rock was made for compilations. One single per band, 15 minute sets per gig,and if there's anything left,of which there shouldn't be if you're a proper Punk Rock band, then that gets stuck on a compilation dunnit?
Using the same criteria for the Japanese, Punk rock was made for da Japanoise Yoof to vomit out the relentless oppression of Japanese Culture......the poor sods.
It's a bit like how da English yoof got liberated by a combination of first wave American Rock'n'Roll and ,ironically, being trapped in the poverty of a bankrupt Britain created by the massive loan...yes I did say 'Loan', that the American Government gave the Churchill Govt to buy armaments from the United States to fight the Third Reich on behalf of of the rapidly diminishing Free World.
Ironically still, no such conditions were foisted upon the axis powers after their inevitable defeat. They all got massive financial reparations to build their economies into the giants they are today.
The 'Brits', they got rationing, powdered egg and Bombed out homelessness. Punishement for giving the Japs the idea of torpedoing the enemy navy in their harbour with light aircraft....exactly what the Brits did to the Italian Navy in the Mediterranean the same year.
However, both Germany, Italy and Japan, didn't have the vibrant youth culture that was produced out of the UK austerity plan post war.
As the last Japanese soldier surrendered in the mid-seventies, things had begun to loosen up a little in Nippon. Disemboweling noise and relentlessly fuming Punk Rock emerged from the polite world of Jap Society. And some of the finest disemboweling shit it is too, as collected on this fine shared jap-core compilation featuring some very pissed off sons of Nippon.

SEP/8363 – ".04" (Party Sound Tapes – P.S.-6) 1984

Not that you give seven shades of shite, but,I have a liking for groups with totally unrecallable names, unpronounceable names that don't work in any filing system, even the Dewey Decimal, and are near google proof.No-one is quite sure if its the title or the catalog number.I also like a good collage,so this scores heavily on the non music front,as well as sporting a rather nifty brand of Non-Music itself. All this, together means the music comes a poor fourth place in my priorities.
Of course this is yet another group that features Severed Head In The Bag's own Brad Laner. Who not only has a natural aptitude for the abstract, and the noncommercial, but seems to have no real need to be a somebody,or even a no-body,or anybody save himself. From such rich pastures does arise thee perfect conditions to make art such as this.Art that clears the room of dumb people....I hesitate to say Trump fans,so i won't, to avoid elongated and pointless tit-for-tat arguments about the post-fact reality in the comments section....but you know what i'm getting at don't you?
Anyway, there's a top snooker player called Trump also, who does seem to attract a dumb people entourage attracted to his reckless style of attacking populist snooker.
The noble art of Snooker aside, this tape is just one of the many delightfully weird offshoots of the Los Angeles Free Music Society,of whom Brad was but one of the members.
Whether he plays Snooker I dunno, but I reckon he's got an interesting safety game.

Yukio Jung aka Terry Burrows, international best selling author and music expert...yes...EXPERT!....multi-instrumentalist and the like, so on and so on.
He being the only member of his 'group', Jung Analysts, he likes to chop things up  bruv......sorry, i'm writing this while watching The BRIT awards.I explain this away as 'just waiting for Match Of The Day'.Which, as Terry has creative connections with Leicester,is totally appropriate, as I'm salivating at the prospect of watching the highlights of  Leicester City stuffing pretentious wannabe's Tottenham Hotspur 4-1.A lot better than watching a constant stream of Pop school graduates and talent show runner-ups collecting awards for good behaviour as a small cog in the corporate entertainment machine.(Wet Leg excepted of course!) .....OMFG i'm just watching the most awful toe curling cringeworthy dance routine ever by some chubby but clubby 'out' knob'ead called Sam Smith(!?)acting all sexeh like, with a troupe of dancers clad in shiny PVC?...who ever the Fuck he(They) is or isn't...Fuck Me! Wot a Dick!......great relief...Match of the Day's just starting.....unbelievably The Foxes aren't on first????
I'd like to see some of these poor Dancers choreographing  moves to "Here's Lucifer' by Yukio Jung, which is probably as close as you can get to Dance music on Die or DIY? Lots of funky synth and funny noises with stops and changes of direction, slap bass with tongue in cheek clever clever lyrics, just to show us that, yes, he's really playing that bassoon. Alternative dance music, which means you can't dance to it I assume? The same way as 1980's Alternative Comedians weren't funny....the Jung Ones.
There are parts of this that I could imagine Paul Jung unleashing some blue eyed soul affront of,other parts needed David Sylvian to croon to.
It turns left, it turns right,it stops, and even goes backwards...I kid thee not.Future Disco.
The only thing that's wrong with all this is the tiresome 80's underground requirement of a Margaret Thatcher sample to portray her as some kind of special evil. You can't slag off Thatcher and remain a capitalist consumer, which even Crass were,They own their own commune, bought and paid for thanks to a mortgage arranged with a local bank!?,Which, in the grand definition of things in general makes them "Bourgeois".Whatever happened to Property is Theft?

Good to see the late Jackie Charlton mentioned in the track listing, which brings to mind a rather creepy single released by the deceased world cup winner about the good old days ooop north, sitting on granddad's knee, why aye Man! Thankfully there was no such thing as Pedophiles back then, nor Homosexuals,or them troublesome human rights......"Why Aye,it w'grate back then" slurs an obviously salivating Jackie.

Jackie Charton Says:
"Why Aye Man, it was sunday every day back then" said Jackie Charlton. He would have thought that this album was utter shite man.....but you'd know you were doing something wrong if it was any other way.

Trixie's Big Red Motorbike - "All Day Long In Bliss (Singles, Demos And Peel Sessions)" 1981-85

The fairy prince and princess of twee has to be brother and sister Mark and Melanie Litten who, like many of their Twee contemporaries never got to release an album in their lifetimes.
Haling from a pre-Wet Leg Isle Of Wight ,they released their sparkly gentle pre-teen ditties on their own Lobby Ludd label....which is how my father, strangely, used to refer to Robin Hood?...I blame those Nazi's  and their prison camps and stuff i do.
Amazingly, according to Discogs, Mark Litten was something of a sound tech for Def Leppard!?.....I wonder what those clueless oafs thought of  Trixie's Big Red Motorbike,if they ever got to hear it; as the sole purpose of all this Twee stuff was to distance the wimps who made it as far away from the spotty testosterone fueled nonsense of NWOBHM as possible. I'd like to think that Lemmy would have got it,but not necessarily actually liking it....maybe not?
Where did this stuff evolve from?
I guess the earliest roots would have to be Syd Barrett's solo work, the more whimsical end of UK Psych, and Velvet Underground's third album. Then the proto-punk nerd-chic of Johnathan Richman and Talking Heads,a bit later the TV Personalities,The Raincoats, and Subway Sect, making rejection of Rock music fashionable in 1978 leading to wimps like Orange Juice,Altered Images,Marine Girls (a marine Girl,Jane Fox, actually appears on a few of these tracks),Young Marble Giants,Dolly Mixture and so-forth.
It all gets quite confusing, with a venn diagram of Twee, overlapping ShoeGaze and Dream Pop.You can find Galaxie 500, My Bloody Valentine, and The Cocteau Twins all in the same space.
However, undoubtedly,Trixie's Big Red Motorbike is firmly entrenched within the Twee area of the diagram, alongside many of the forthcoming entities we shall be visiting making music for Wimps by Wimps.
I may have spent most of my time going to Godflesh and Napalm Death gigs in 1986/7,but nearly every other band on the circuit were Twee befringed Indie pop shoegaze dreamers, which i now realise was rather good, and refreshing......then came the second summer of bloody fucking Love, and the Shoegazers picked up a tambourine and started enjoying themselves, dancing and the like!?.Tut TUT TUT!

The Golden Palominos – "A History: Vol. 1 (1982-1985)" (Mau Mau Records – MAUCD 625) 1992

Fuckin' 'ell Anton Fier,of virtually every band that was worthwhile in New York and Cleveland in the 80's bur primarily the mainstay of The Golden Palominos ,has also kicked the bucket;but in this case it was an 'assisted' bucket kicking in one of those dodgy 'non-profit' clinics in Switzerland,Dignitas innit? Of which I saw no mention anywhere.
He wasn't ill apparently. He just decided he'd had enough. He couldn't drum as well as he wanted anymore and said he felt he had achieved everything he wanted and it was time to go. I thought that kind of behavior was illegal if you weren't ill?...or was he? It's been a long time since he had a record out? Did he have some degenerative disease or summut? The drummer with Strobe Talbot has MS,and discovered that by forcing himself to drum,he could regain his cognitive abilities on said instrument......!?...Maybe Anton was a tad hasty with his decision to top himself at the age of 66! What's the point of suicide anyway, we have eternity to be be dead, and we were all dead for an eternity before we were born.Wrong decision Anton. There are plenty of children getting their heads blown off by a bunch of Russian Wankstains who would love to have swapped places.
The list of groups bands and soloists that Anton has added his drumming and artistic skills to is far too long, and boring to list here (Pere Ubu blah blah blah....),but the most Anton-centric of the lot has to be The Golden Palominos, who existed from 1981 to the twenty-teenies. So, as the best days of any band, are the early days, I have decided to post a compilation of the those very ''Early days when he wasn't in 'The Feelies'.
The understated, and under reported, method of his passing, was also a tribute to the man, having never sold out to the commercial opportunities of someone who could boast a Cv as long and comprehensive as Anton Fier's....you know I still dunno how to pronounce his name!?..insult or tribute, you decide.
Here's the legal Swiss  bumpf on assisted suicide from non-selfish motives. It's legal, if, for example, lethal drugs are prescribed and the intended recipient takes an active role in the drug administration? Sounds a bit dodgy to me, but who am I to stop anyone from deciding for themselves when they can end all this surreal madness at a time of their choosing.
He leaves us with a vast legacy of work, some of which is on this early nineties compilation, that even boasts Michael Stipe and John Lydon as guest vocalists,...i'll cease the name dropping and present to you this rather fancy compilation of some genuinely great downtown Noo yawk fancy-pants music...sophisticated and experimental,so you can bet yer bottom dollar that Bill Laswell is hanging out waiting for the photo ops...you know the crowd,Zorn, Lindsey, Laswell etc,the kind of downtown sophisticates that people like us should curtsy to if allowed within their golden auras.
Quite a bit of the later tracks sound like that terrible PiL album, called 'Album'...mainly because it had...you guessed it Bill Laswell on it...and the drums, played by the late Anton himself, reminds one of the (uncredited) drumming on 'Album',which i had previously presumed was shared by twin legends,Tony Williams and Ginger Baker....by this evidence it was Anton Fier who did the drumming and skillfully avoided a credit in the process;and also why Lydon makes an appearance on this comp, from just around the time he was making that offending disc to confirm to himself, and those dumb enough to think Levene and Wobble made the music in PiL, his own genius....or lack of therein.

Public Image Ltd – "Commercial Zone" (PiL Records Inc. – XYZ-007) 1984

Recently Deceased  alleged guitar genius Keith Levene (alleged by himself mainly) who was responsible for stealing the tapes for Public Image Ltd's dodgy follow-up to the classic 'Flowers Of Romance' LP.,and remixing the results to make himself look even more like the feckless junkie he really was. The accepted wisdom is that "Commercial Zone" is far superior to the awful dross that was the official PiL fourth studio album, clumsily entitled, "This is what you want...This is what you get".....which I can now reveal to be incorrect.....we wanted Metal Box 2 but got "This is what you want...This is what you get" and "The Commercial Zone",in other words, the same album twice. (get Metal Box deluxe Edition Here!)
As horrified as I was back in 1984,as to how unapologetically 'Bad' this record by one of the greatest groups to have ever stalked this Earth ,was. I now have changed my mind. They are both quite awful in 1984 terms, but in 2022, they both sound rather otherworldly, and have aged like a budget bottom shelf wine. They just don't make 'em like this anymore!
What on earth is that singer doing? A horrible throaty hi-pitched whine that seems to be singing the same tune in every song.Wasn't he in Those Sex Pistols once upon a time? How did it get to be like this?
The music IS Disco, but a Disco that no-one wants to dance to....which is,in fact, the best kind of Disco.
Keith Levine stole and released "Commercial Zone" after he was sacked from PiL so as not to endanger the group's lucrative Japanese tour due to his severe drug addiction. Revealing an album with no hits, even though "This Is Not A Love Song" was a massive worldwide smash,it really shouldn't have seen the light of day when comparing it to little Johnny Rotten Band's previous work.
However, having not listened to these two different versions of the same record after a good thirty years abstinence,I now find myself enjoying this confusingly disconnected art school drop-out funk ...with a singer who seems to be taking the piss out himself and the record buying public in general.
Previously, my opinion of John Lydon, and his post-1981 work followed, somewhat, the general direction of this rather malicious review of "This is what you want...This is what you get", by the NME's Biba Kopf, who got his/her claws out ruthlessly back in good ol' 1984:

"Dear John, the big kiss off:

This is what you want? Carry On Picking The Carrion Part Umpteen? Starring Johnny Rotten as Little Miss Understood, the world’s most self-righteous schoolmarm, whose once shrivelling, presently shrivelled, wit has tightened to a contstipated bowel that slowly and painfully emits squeaky sarcasms only capable of raising tears in 11 year olds? Or the frightening faithful class creep Martin Applecheeks back in line?
This is what you’re left with when you make a career of going against nature (only to be defeated by your own): a fixed scowl, a very limited public image indeed, intuition dried up, refinement beyond grasp, reduced by sloth to hiring studio morticians to cosmetise the corpse of a long dead idea, because you no longer care or have energy enough to be invigoratingly careless.
Now bored with testing the world against your whims you blame it, anyone else but yourself-it can never be your fault, can it? - for your loss of interest, loss of words, loss of vision; for your very deafness… But surely even you can feel the cheapness of the horrortronics permeating this record with the stink of the stale and the secondhand. Sudden sax squalls and thunderous drum breaks are hardly the things to blow it away.
For one whose chief pride has always been remaining true to yourself, I’m surprised your conscience so readily accepts your feeble reasoning. Just because you write a love song, there must be something wrong with the form? Obviously. And because your dwindling legion still stand by to watch the waning moon of your rotten talent, believing it will rise again, they must be thoroughly abused, thereby disabused of that sentimental notion? Naturally.
With you on the last point, Johnboy, and will reluctantly admit you a piddling victory. Your idiot finger wagging rhythm ’n’ entropy, exemplified by the bicker banter of the title ‘This Is What You Want This Is What You Get’, is crass and mediocre enough to complete your self-willed, pointless martyrdom. Congratulations. You’ve earned our contempt. Here it comes:
Wot a bloody stupid cackleshit asshole coyote lied-to done-in-good ’n’ rotten put-upon no-hope lumpenlard jackal knucklehead trickletalent pile of jokepuke you turned out to be. There ain’t enough copographers in the world to swallow your PiL in quantity enough to justify the cost any longer.

Piss off.

Biba Kopf, NME, 4th August 1984"

OUCH!?
Of course this kinda of intelligent funky stuff was ten a penny back in the eighties, and it got swallowed up in the swell of the tsunami, then dragged out to sea. But,all said, the Bad Life/Mad Max video is,and always was,and always will be, one of the best video's ever made,in my humble opinion.
And as much as I agreed with Bibs in 1984, I now have, predictably, the opposite view nowadays. It's a lump of 'lumpenlard jackal knucklehead' cypto-genius is what it is......it went really downhill from here however.

This blurb was supposed to be a tribute to the recently expired Keith Levene,to whom the much over-used word 'Genius' was often applied largely by...er...Mr Lydon a lot, and not by very many others save himself.
As his reputation is intrinsically linked to PiL's first two albums, it is partially true; but he was conspicuous by his smack induced absence on Flowers of Romance, and largely invisible on The "Commercial Zone" bootleg too. However, one must point to his highly unique contributions to "Theme" and "Public Image" (the single),which will echo deep into infinity and beyond with their shimmering perfection, and the inescapable irony of John's lyrics to "Theme"...."I wish I could Diiiiieeee".
Not sure Keef would appreciate the reality of such words wherever he may be in the eternal now, what was, and what should have been.
Rest In Peace Keef.....and hopefully there are no Drugs in paradise to fuck up the after-life too!

Reagan Youth – "Youth Anthems For The New Order" (R Radical Records – RYR 831) 1984

Yeah, it's guess what I did today part 2.....answers on a postcard to Reagan Youth Superfan, Vladimir Putin,The Kremlin, Moscow via China via Taiwan. The one delivered by hand to that Chinese Dictator bloke by Nancy Pelosi is the winner, who will gets free lessons in roofing techniques by yours truly.
Shoot!...i gave it away slightly, because i spent the afternoon, gluing down tiles on my roof ready for the ruthless winter wind swooping down from the Pyrenees. It was cooler today, only a refreshing 31 degrees.
Yesterday my travails were accompanied by Adrenalin O.D.,so today's US Hardcore classic has to be Reagan Youth ;who contrary to popular opinion were absolutely NOT the official KKK hardcore band.......although there were plenty more that were......not that I've really got anything against that on a musical level,in fact its adds a bit of spice to the proceedings, shakes things up a tad. There ain't much music these days that is strictly Taboo, and i guess racist redneck punk is certainly taboo...so if i'm attracted to the wrongness of it, then so will more sinister folk.
This copy of "Youth Anthems For The New Order"is one of those expanded complete deluxe edition that are so popular among the sideways-ly mobile middle Classes over 60 these days.Although Hardcore was made for eleven minute long 13 track 7" ep's, now we have two hour long versions including every piece of shite that a band ever recorded.
The original E.P is represented here on tracks 53-59, beefed up with endless alternative versions, live tracks, and alternate mixes.....rather silly.
As for the music, I'll substitute my personal feelings with an hilariously pretentious critique of a Don Van Vliet painting from 1989.....i feel the words used are perfect for analyzing Reagan Youth in 1984?

'Beefheart's remarkable art - a raw vibrant collision of colours, muscular brushstrokes and vivid physical tableaux - has a strong element of mischief about it. He challenges your sense of dimension and natural order while reaffirming, with a kind of aggro-primitivist delight, his love of nature itself, a trademark theme of his music and poetry as well. One 1985 painting, 'Pig Erases Statue In Passing', has a dark maroon, rather elongated hog striding purposefully past an interlocking array of distorted hybrid figures, some humanesque, one the head of a steely grey horse. The pig stands out from the chaos as a beast of pride and purpose.'

I also think that, like The Pig, Reagan Youth stood out from the chaos as a beast of pride and purpose...at least until the second Ep,anyway.
Personally, always courting the unpopular opinion,Don Van Vliet's paintings are largely pretentious shite, but fun to look at,decorative at best.
I'm pushing my luck expressing an interest in Red Neck Punk and dissing Captain Beefheart's frankly rubbish painting.....but admittedly not as bad as Ronnie Wood's irredeemably terrible tableaux.
It's been a long time since i've been called a nazi asshole, so here's hopin'!?
At least i fixed the roof without falling off.....although i came close after listening to some of the terrible production values on this Reagan Youth box set......did someone say "Reagan Youth Box Set."???
An "aggro-primitivist delight" indeed but certainly remarkably "Jejune" in content.I may even detect a Crass influence here, with the fold out poster and monotonous politics.
But tracks 53 to 59 are nearly perfect. In a way.
