Jr. And His Soulettes – "Psychodelic Sounds" (HMM Records – SH 954-955) 1971


I can only assume that the misspelling is deliberate, otherwise it translates as the sounds of serial killers on drugs.....which is not a bad Band name.....not quite as good as "Drunks with Guns",but that one's taken.
So we've heard Angela the 6 year Old Rapper (aka Talking over a back beat"? Now we got 10 year old Howard M.Moore Jr showing off and captured on self-released vinyl.Backed up by his sisters (The Soulettes)aged 6,7 and 9 years old respectively.
They've obviously been watching the progress of the Jacksons; hopefully minus the abusive parent.Which I'm sad to say was a essential ingredient that created the King of Peado-Pop Wacko Jacko itself.
Junior owes a lot to his sisters one has to say, but he's the oldest so he gets to play Dad's Electric Guitar such are the unwritten patriarchal rules that have suppressed the fairer sex since physics shat out the 4th dimension of Time.
If there was a Talent show anywhere near by, they would have cleaned up.Everybody in the general Public loves a smarmy kid showing off,but whom are actually, very Crap.I'm still haunted by 10 year old Lena Zavoroni on Opportunity Knocks (UK) for 13 consecutive weeks,screeching her way through "Mama He's Making Eyes At Me"(1974),at bullet-proof glass shattering volume. With a song choice that sounds rather inappropriate to these 21st century ears!?...sadly she rapidly developed Anorexia , and died. At least she avoided Jeff Epstein and Donald Trump,who probably wanked his little malodorous mushroom silly watching this clip(link above). 
Exposure to celebrities, or even worse, the 'Public',before 18 should be made illegal.....the bastards!......Fucking Cunting Bastard TWATS!!!

Angela Simpson– "Angela" (Spectrum Records – SPEC 5001) 1971


Hey...let's take a short break from Electro Compilations and stray onto the controversial turf of who was the first Rapper person?
Not quite Old School, more like Pre-School Rap, where six year old Angela Simpson out does Roxanne by 8 years to be the youngest Rapper on the block. 
This ain't no Rap I hear you cry,even though there's a track actually called 'Rapping' .....so stuff that in yer pipe and smoke it. Proto-Rap is the category I've crowbared this into.
Who invented 'Rap'anyway? The word is certainly Afro-american, but Ian Dury was a crippled Cockney white-man,and John Cooper Clarke was similar,but Mancunians both, appearing a couple of years before The Sugarhill Gang, and Issac Hayes did some Rap's on the "Black Moses" LP,although they were more of a croon than Rap as we know it. The Last Poets get the prize for inventing Hip-Hop culture,them and Gil Scott Heron I reckon? Big Youth, Prince Far-I, Mark E. Smith....Hell..I dunno what I'm rapping on about really,but I have noticed that it usually takes several individuals to come up with the necessary pieces of the Jigsaw Dunnit!?.....personally....and NO! it wasn't Debbie Harry either!
Anyhow,there's one person who definitely didn't come up with Rap music, and that's Angela Simpson, I'll tell yer That!

Jilted John – "True Love Stories... Plus" (Castle Music – ESM CD 771) 1978



I remember sending me mum downtown to the record shop to get "Jilted John" by Jilted John on Rabid back in '78......but,it had SOLD OUT?!
This tchoon's time in the limelight coincided with the only visit logged to date of my Australian relatives from the suburbs of Sydney.......I'm now thinking of that fine song by The Fall, "Australians in Europe.....Peel Session version", that reignited my enthusiasm for MES and said group. These were absolutely NOT fans of The Saints,or any of those fine Oz Punk groups.Cousin Carl still wore the most horrible flared jeans,and liked stuff such as Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles(!?)So he was rather shocked at what was happening in the the whole of the UK, music wise. He accompanied me to the Record Shop where i bought that Raw Records Compilation "(Oh No)...it's More From Raw", which included such classic Punk Rock tchoons, as The beyond great Users' "Sick Of You", faux cockney's The killjoys, Some Chickens' manson inspired "Blood On The Wall",Hammersmith Gorillas etc.....not a bad track as far as i was concerned,but Carl was Horrified;later confiding in my mother that he felt Old and past it....he was 17.This of course only encouraged me to play it constantly,and at some stage i slipped Jilted John,on EMI, onto my turntable.This got an enthusiastic response from the female end of our antipodean relations.Cousin Clare was my age and secured herself a copy to take back to Wolongong to show off her new Punk single to her mates.
Describing this novelty single as "Punk" was pushing it a bit,but it had the sneery vocals,one chord guitar work,the group,....or the Rabid Records staff... looked a bit scruffy, but it did have its DIY roots,so i couldn't discourage the idea.This could have been by Johnny Rotten if he had a more privileged upbringing lived in Manchester and was nice.
I never bought, or even know of a Jilted John album until it got re-released in 1999.It's largely awful,and provided further evidence that this Graham Fellows project should have lasted for one single only;but, it does sound like a potential Lost-Teenage dream nostalgia musical that never was.....so maybe in the future?

Jilted John – "Jilted Jam Demos Rehearsals & Gigs 1977 - 2008" (Boss Tuneage – BTRCRS090) 2016


Another from the same northern monkey school of straddling that grey area between acting, comedy and music, would have to be,one Graham Fellows aka, Jilted John and John Shuttleworth. As was so kindly mentioned by someone in the comments section,he appeared on manchesters' Rabid records, along with stablemates Slaughter and the Dogs, John Cooper Clark, Chris Seivey (Frank Sidebottom),Ed Banger and the Nosebleeds;featuring none other than Vinni Riley of Durutti Column fame,and briefly Jilted John....before EMI snaffled him up.
Yes, "Jilted John" by Jilted John, was a top ten smash in summer 1978.Back in the days when You could say things like Slag,Bitch and Puff on television and not face being cancelled. As this clip of John's third appearance on Top Of The Pops demonstrates, beginning with Jimmy Saville cavorting alongside three possible victims while introducing John on live vocals.Sadly it was destined to become yet another novelty one hit wonder......but there was more....an album and a slew of flop singles.Not to mention demo's and even a couple of gigs!?
Essentially, Graham was more on the Actor who does music rather than the musician who does acting,which never works out great, does it David Bowie ? Actors who do music did have rather more sucess than the aforementioned disasters...namely Punishment Of LuxuryShoes For Industry,  Albertos y los trios Paranoias and...erm....Jilted John.
I rather think the Jilted John Project would have been better left as just a novelty hit, but of course, when a major label is involved, they squeeze the juice out of anything they get their stupid hands on.Which reminds me of the time when the top EMI record executive met new signings Pink Floyd, and asked which one was 'pink'.
Jilted John would have been a musical in the west end if it was made now....it still could I guess,it's all there,the story sung in half-rhyme,the nostalgic characters,the teenage  memories,the hit, all that's needed is some naff choreography by Wayne Sleep and a few million quid from Andrew Lloyd-Webber's bulging coffers, and an unsanctioned Oligarch.The Public would love it.
John/Graham had another brush with minor fame,this time as an actor,playing Gail Tilsley's inappropriate young lover in Coronation Street.....before reinventing himself as retired Steelworker John Shuttleworth,who spent his redundancy on a secondhand Yamaha keyboard in a quest for fame as a singer songwriter. His greatest hit I would suggest, has to be "Pigeons In Flight" (more on the way....recorded in Dolby.

Criswell ‎– "The Legendary Criswell Predicts Your Incredible Future" (Horoscope Records ‎– H-156) 1970


"We are all interested in the future, for that is where we are going to spend the rest of our lives !", said bonkers TV Psychic Criswell....he didn't have any other names apparently,which is usually the hallmark of a genius. Criswell certainly had a genius in the way he could predict virtually nothing that came true.Thanks to the benefit of living precisely 20 years after the Criswell predicted 'End of the World',we can look back and definitely cross vending machine sex-change operations off of the list for starters.
I am rather envious of that splendid cultivated kiss curl that can be located revolving from his receeding hairline.
It may surprise you to know, but the Narrator of 'Plan Nine From Outer Space' was predictably, a rampant Homosexual.Which would have made him fit in rather snuggly with all the other freaks and outsiders that made up the Edward D. Wood Jr entourage.
The low budget Nostradamus supplies us with 40 minutes of wide ranging predictions,that if the same analysis technique as applied to the cryptic verse of the mad monk of Provence, all of these madcap alternative futures have already happened,and this where you heard them first......and last, because, like Nostradamus....None of them came,or will appear to become true,without a dumpster full of autistic licence.
But, we laugh at Criswell, and take Nostradamus as 'real'??
The most disturbing thing about this trash culture clairvoyance is that its trival targets are only too omnipresent in this post Criswell future.Death, the proud brother, tapped on his shoulder well before he could bask in his cult glory, and before he could take advantage of having his remains blasted into outer space by missle.This prediction at least, did come true;but sadly,in the case of James "Scottie" Doohan of Star Trek.His rocket never made it into space, and crashed somewhere in the Mojave Desert...."the Engines could nae take it Captain!"

Raymond Scott ‎– "Manhattan Research Inc." (Basta ‎– 30-9078-2) 2000


Whereas one ,rather more famous, Manhatten Project became the Destroyer of Worlds.
There was another that became the Creator Of Worlds,in fact the creator of the synth.This one was run by Raymond Scott,who spent his time stretching the limits of modern 1950's science to make something positive for the future of mankind,rather than its destruction.Although some of the music his research and innovation went on to enable its existence by,would make any sane man choose nuclear annihilation rather than have this torture inflicted upon them.
From around 1949 onwards,former Big Band Jazzer Raymond, spent most all of his time inventing early synth's like the "Electronium", and the "Clavinox",which was a keyboard controlled Theremin,and the "Karloff",an early sampler. Naturally he used all this gear in his wacky music,which can be heard in most decent american cartoons up to and including ,in my opinion, The best TV series ever made, "The Ren and Stimpy Show".
This posthumous release of unreleased works discovered at his home, showcases Scott's pioneering electronics from the 1950s and 1960s with his futuristic electronic compositions mainly used in television and radio commercials and for the burgeoning market for novelty records of electronic music.He was highly prolific in all areas of early electronic music it seems.
So that's why he was forgotten?

Perrey & Kingsley ‎– "The In Sound From Way Out!" ( Vanguard ‎– VSD-79222) 1966


From the 'Stereolab' (now where have we heard that before?) of  Gershon Kingsley and Jean-Jacques Perrey....fine american names both.....we bring you "The In Sound From Way Out!";probably one of the top ten album titles of alllll time. It even got used twice when The Beastie Boys brought out an album with the same name,same cover, but far far shitter music inside.
Using all those avant garde Musique Concréte techniques made famous by lofty com-poseurs like Pierre Schaeffer nigh-on twenty years previously.Perrey and Kingsley did the american thing and made the silliest music possible with kilometres of magnetic tape and a razor blade.I say 'silly', but if some French bloke fresh out of the Conservatoire de Musique made this in 1952,it would still be hailed as a ground breaking work of art-sonique to this day.
Instead it's filed in the Novelty section as a rediscovered piece of cheese to break the ice at your soirée...in fact exactly what it was created for in 1966.Forget History and we're doomed to repeat it.....oh shit,was that my right wing ignorance and a reference to Statue toppeling again??? In which case I don't apologize.

Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan ‎– "The Fascinating World Of Electronic Music" (Philips ‎– P 08168) 1959


Fascinating isn't it?......what do you mean 'what!'???, The world of Electronic Music of course!?
This is the Dutch 'The In Sound From Way Out',but done seven years before Perrey and KIngsley's batchelor pad classic in the USA. This never made it into the Space-age Batchelor pads of America of course,only being released in such weird nowheres-ville places as Argentina, the Netherlands,and Mexico!?
It's not quite as silly as Perrey and Kingsley's work in the mid to late sixties, but I'm sure a copy of this may have found its way into their sweaty palms at some stage in the process....even the cover art bares some similarity to the In-Sound from not so way out,Holland in fact.
Its also Fascinating, how the technology of any age is used mainly for our own titilation and entertainment rather than helping anyone;like the internet, far from being an information superhighway,and bringing everyone together in harmonious peace,its used for masturbation,gossip,propaganda,getting laid by strangers and stealing,...oops...I mean sharing, free records.......Fuck peace man!
I know what you're all asking,"Who is this cool sounding Kid Baltan?".
Rule one is, always reverse the words when deciphering an alias.
So we are left with Dik Natlab, which is none other than Dick Raaijmakers......satisfied now with your endless questions?....No?.....Who's he?.....?
Dick Raaijmakers,is a Dutch early electronic composer,who worked for 'Nat Lab' (Baltan),(Natuurkundig Laboratorium ,laboratory for physics),.....you dig?
The enigmatic 'Kid Baltan......somehow not as I imagined him!?
So, Kid Baltan, got together with fellow Dutchman, Jazzer and experimental composer, Tom Dissevelt (real name), and made these weird musique concrete pieces for 'Phillips' in the 'Natlab' ,which was created by Phillips in order to develop new ways in music on a scientific basis. 
Again, these tunes would be perfect for some East European animation, but instead, like the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the company didn't give enough credit to Tom and Dick, so Tom left the Natlab to Dick in 1963.
I also noticed that Perrey and Kingsley called their studio the "Stereo Lab"......inspired from the Nat Lab by any chance?...also strange because most of these things were in Mono.....'Mono Lab' anyone?
Originally credited as being by "The Elektrosoniks",this,nestling between The Incredible String Band and The Velvet Underground, was cited as one of David Bowies all-time top 25 albums!?

BBC Radiophonic Workshop ‎– "The John Baker Tapes Volume 2 (1963-75) (Trunk Records ‎– JBH029CD) 2008


I suppose the label this was released on should have been called 'drunk' not 'Trunk' records, as Radiophonic Workshop stalwart John Baker was probably drunk while he made the majority of these novel advert jingles and TV soundtracks.
Compared to his colleagues John was firmly on the musicianly side of composition,and also firmly in the Novelty music section of the workshop. Whereas Delia Derbyshire could make her doomy atmospheres, and Brian Hodgson could spent all his time making weird noises,John was lumbered with making funny tunes from varispeeded shampoo bottle pan pipes for a daytime childrens science programme. No wonder he turned to the evil drink.....but then again so did Delia. Although Delia couldn't keep up with Johns voracious appitite for consuming reams of cigarettes and therefore lived a few years longer.
Delia left in 1973 because the electronics were getting too easy and more conventional, but John Baker was sacked for being Drunk most of the time. The last recording he made before his descent into the dark realms of alcoholism was done at home on his piano in 1975(included here)...probably just before he sold it to buy more booze.He never made music again and died, age 60, in 1997.

Delia Derbyshire & Anthony Newley ‎– "Moogies Bloogies" (Trunk Records ‎– TTT008) 2014/1966


Newley wanted electronics,Newley gets Electronics.
This was gonna be David Bowies vocal influence's 'new' direction,and someone recommended Delia Derbyshire to provide this new fangled electronic stuff. 
So this 'Perv Pop' novelty electronica was gonna be Delia's route to chart sucess.....but.....Newley ,although very enthusiatic about his little dirty raincoat song,went to hollywood to be a crooning star,and it never got released. Delia was initially ashamed of it,but allegedly grew to love it over the ensuing decades....and Newley?..., well he got to hang out at Roman Polanski and Sharon Tait's drug fuelled orgies,and the Moogies and Bloogies were never mentioned again. If he had hung out on the right night in Polanski's residence he could have been stabbed up by the Manson Family,and this would have been a big hit. Delia couldn't even rely on Charlie Manson to help provide those elusive royalties,just like those that the BBC kept for themselves.
"The late Anthony Newley told his label that he wanted to do something electronic. So they got on to me. So I produced this bloopy track and he loved it so much he double-tracked his voice and he used my little tune.
  The winking knees in the rain, and their mini-skirts. I'd done it as a lovely little innocent love song, because he said to me that the only songs are, "I love you, I love you" or songs saying "you've gone, you've gone."
  I'd written this beautiful little innocent tune, all sensitive love and innocence, and he made it into a dirty old raincoat song. But he was really chuffed! Joan and Jackie Collins dropped him off in a limousine at my lovely little flat above a flower shop, and he said "If you can write songs like this, I'll get you out of this place"! It was only a single-track demo tape. So he rang up his record company saying "We want to move to a multi-track studio". Unfortunately the boss of the record company was on holiday, and by the time he returned Anthony Newley had gone to America with Joan Collins, so it was never released.
