Peter Sotos – "Buyer's Market" (AWB Recording – AWB 016) 1992

Hmmmm,Rolf Harris died yesterday....so I thought....this....?!
Perhaps the only album on this blog that has been made by a person convicted for the possession of child pornography....(no.not Steve Albini!!!!). The Putrid Voyeurism collected on this brutal compilation of  victims accounts of sexual violence, would be explained away as a grim portrait of the Human capacity for ...for want of a better word...Evil?.....were it not made by a geezer who blatantly gets off on stuff like this. No-one called the Moors Murderers 'Artists' did they. And i'm sure Sotos would go to any lengths to get his grubby little hands on the Lesley Anne Downey tape made by Brady and Hindley back in the day,an obvious  obsession of his, as Lesley appears on the front cover of this CD,and even appears as the main subject in one of his books, "Selfish,Little...".
As aural Pornography goes, this is a far less subtle, but equally disturbing, honest, version of "Come on Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears, and other similar Aural sex Pop Vehicles for corporate satanic abuse rings.
When I first heard this collage ,I inexplicably played it straight through, and disturbingly felt precisely nothing, except a modicum of boredom. Was I a Monster, Am I a Monster?
Repeating this process some 30 years later, I got quite effortlessly upset at several points in this thoroughly unwholesome experience.........the boredom was still there, but It seems I am no longer a monster? Why is this? Is it that we are protected from truths such as these in this modern age,or are we more emotionally empathetic ......very trendy.Or am I depressed enough to allow the real effect of this exploration into the darker side of human nature penetrate, what i previously thought, was my desensitized black heart.
During the height of Grunge, Nirvana's producer somehow thought it was a jolly good idea to edit Soto's tapes into the collage we pretend not to know and love today. Our Steven would have had to play and listen to these harrowing accounts hundreds of times before his job was finished;then the poor sod had to go and produce Nirvana after this?Including the tasteless "Rape Me" tune........recorded(not produced) by the four-eyed grunge psychopath himself? Albini was in a band called Rapeman after all I suppose?
What Sotos, the Artist, not the Perv, examines here is the Culture of the Victim– how family members left behind are manipulated by the media, and ultimately, how their identity is redefined in the process.
Perhaps one of the starkest documents, assembled for maximum impact, accounting the darkest side of human nature on the booming industrial culture 'Buyers Market'.I feel Dirty....as in unclean rather than 'Got the 'orn!?' in the Derek and Clive sense.Although i rather suspect Peter Sotos likely got 'The 'Orn',and knocked one,if not several out frequently during the process of acquiring the recordings for this dubious piece of 'Art'.
Alas,be it far more offensive and disturbing than anything any of those snowflake Death Metal/Grindcore bands could ever possibly come up with. They're just playing with it,silly boys.Which is in fact worse than Britney Spears and her awful daddy.
If you're not moved by this profoundly disturbing record in any way, except,of course, turned on sexually (turn yourself into the nearest police station if this is the case), you probably are the fucking monster I no longer am and Fuck you.

Consumer Electronics ‎– "Crowd Pleaser" (45rpm 12" vinyl - Hand To Mouth 1) 2009

Well, might as well have something from the reactivated version of Consumer Electronics.
This is from 2009,on limited edition vinyl. Its very short but rather ferocious.Philip Best busts several bloodvessels in an attempt to fill the hole left by  an absent Whitehouse.
The fuuuuuming Mr Best is LIVID. Ranting over the usual minimal electronic noise, spitting out words with venomous bitterness and ruthless sarcasm. Edited together like a a machine gun firing out digital spittle in your direction. Like a BNP(British working class nazi's) member confronting an asylum seeker.
Crowd pleaser this probably isn't, except for the small gatherings who loyally turn up for this abuse. The vast majority of the population would run a mile from this onslaught. That is why they are now found touring with Sleaford Mods, who are a more poetic, tuneful, and danceable version of Consumer Electronics basically;but they guarantee a crowd to please, or otherwise.

Consumer Electronics ‎– "Leathersex" (Iphar ‎– Iphar 004) 1982

From Total Sex to Leathersex , featuring future Whitehouse member,Philip Best, as his Consumer Electronics project. Still going strong today, frequently seen across europe playing live with the excellent Sleaford Mods!?
This early C-90 is a raw collection of airwave pollution, courtesy of some maltuned Shortwave radio's, producing a kind of fucked up electronic dance music for those employed in the realms of espionage.
Indeed, contained within these collages are hidden, what we now know to be transmissions for, and from, various spying organisations in the Cold war era. Track 14,for example, has a repeated phrase from Strauss's "Blue Danube" played simply, probably by a member of the Stasi,  on some East German electric guitar. This would have been a call sign for some dodgy operative on the opposite side of the Iron Curtain. This cleverly,or accidentally, segues into a drifting transmission of John Lennon's "Mind Games",floating on a sea of morse code and frequency distortion.
(Check out the earlier post of the "Conet Project:recordings of Numbers Stations" for more similar weirdness from the Cold war era)
I used to listen to the strange music of the  short wave radio for hours, and even used it,as we all did in 1980, for the basis of my own early recordings without access to any conventional instruments. The underclass couldn't afford such luxuries as the Gibson guitars and drum kits one saw in the hands of the local 'Punk' band, who were allegedly 'on the Dole'? The real victims of Britain's decaying social structure and economy could only make do with a cassette recorder and a radio to express themselves.
Here we have a fine example of what one could do outside of the middle class rock ghetto.
(Also check out Philip Johnson's "Radio City" for a similar experiment in radio collage).

Leibstandarte SS MB ‎– "Triumph Of The Will" (Come Organisation ‎– WDC 881015) 1981

A fuzzy rumbling noise fest wasn't attention seeking enough for William Bennett,he of Essential Logic, Whitehouse and the Come Organisation. So why not overdub a load of speeches by the higher echelons of the National Socialist and German Workers Party? The logic was essentially to create notoriety, but creatively a pretty uninspiring recipe.
MB (Maurizio Bianchi) had delivered two of his usual noisy symphonies for  Come Org to release; but Bennett decided to firstly overdub speeches by Goebbels and uncle Adolf, and then add Leibstandarte SS to MB's name. Which I understand was Hitlers personal SS bodyguard unit. This kind of thing could muddy one's reputation!  Largely, it has been seen basically as a bad publicity stunt, and has gone to reside in the bad taste draw.
Personally, I would have preferred the noise to have been mixed higher and the speeches a lot lower....in fact not there at all. I never play this record ,because it just sounds like a record of Nazi Speeches, rather than Industrial noise. A bit of a half-arsed hatchet job if you ask me.

Various ‎Artists – "Hoisting The Black Flag" (United Dairies ‎– UD 06) 1980

Here we go,- a United Dairies compilation!

And what's this, an exclusive but errant Lemon Kittens track?

The ironically titled “Funky 7”,is dance music for quadriplegic psychopaths of all creeds and colours. Personally, I find backwards avant-drone dislocated sound collage very funky. I know i'm white, and “ain't got da funk”, but I’d take to an empty dance-floor if this played at my local Discothèque. If it ain't four to the floor, the average Caucasian can't even attempt the hokey-cokey without several homemade E's stuffed down his or her neck. So please, please, leave black peoples music for black people to make, and the 'whites' to make insane shit like this masterpiece.

Still on the subject of ,(cough), 'Dancing'. I drift back to my adolescence, when many a Punk Rock concert witnessed no dancing at all, and in some cases, like Joy Division, no movement at all. This seemed like a desirable natural state for oneself. Then, slowly, idiots like the fucking Specials started beckoning these same lost youths to get up and Dance???? And they DID!!? The enforced jollity of Ska music is the opposite to the voluntary doom of the music on this beyond fine compilation. This stuff is about finding out where your meat comes from, rather than partying back at the abattoir.

The Dance Music theme returns with tracks by David Cross (was he not in King Crimson mark II?), and Paul Hamilton & Joseph Duarte(aka  the Bombay Ducks), which repeats the disjointed collage feel of the Lemon kittens track.

Whitehouse remove us further from the party atmosphere, with two trademark recreations of an electronic Danté's inferno. It's a Hell preferable to one we're living in now,and I wager that dancing's banned; punishable by being sent straight to Heaven(that has to be the name of one of those 'super-clubs on that hive-minded, voluntary Guantanamo shit-hole, Ibiza!).

Naturally, Nurse With Wound make an appearance with a totally de-konstructed version of hill-billy square dance classic, “Duelling Banjo's”. I suspect, that it just shares the same title as the aforementioned red-neck banjo-off?Wishful thinking hopes it's a cover version that has totally removed all the bluegrass, and replaced it with a dead barren wasteland, adorned by a Black Flag hoisted in place of that KKK flag;or whatever they call that swastika alike confederate rag (Seig Howdy!). A desirable future for the Tea Party Taliban's Fatherland I’m sure we'd all agree? If you don't, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING READING THIS BLOG?

Ramleh ‎– "We Created It, Let's Take It Over Vol 3" (Pure Records) 1995/1983

Here is the last volume of Ramleh's early years, which in this instance is virtually a reissue of the "Hand of Glory" ep from 1983, plus a live performance tacked on at the end. The Hand of Glory stuff is a pretty accurate portrayal of Industrialised slavery. This is the sound of the horrible machine that we are trapped in the belly of. Plenty of disembodied screams from the dead souls of industrial hostages of the past, skewered by the screeching microwaves of the modern 'smart'(dumb) phone era, rearranging the DNA strands in your brain. Play this music loud enough and you will cancel out the world outside, like matter and anti matter.

Ramleh ‎– "We Created It, Let's Take It Over Vol 2" (Pure Records) 1995/1982

If you enjoy sounds like swarms of savage bees fed through a cheap distortion pedal, accompanied by screaming hostages locked in a cellar, with lashings of blunt drill bits ripping through rusty plate steel? Then this is definitely for you. Or, why not spend an hour or so making it yourself? All you need is a crap microphone, a crapper synthesiser, one distortion pedal, one echo/delay unit, and a recording device. Maybe the odd piece of dialogue recorded from some documentary about Nazi's to be interspersed here and there ,feed it all through a cheapo mixer, and twist the eq's a lot.Photocopy a couple of pictures of B-list Nazi's, call your songs after the most obscure concentration camp you can find on the internet, and scream lyrics about the Moors Murderers until you bust a blood vessel. Instant Industrial style power electronics. If you don't want your neighbours to think you are a latent raving serial killer, then maybe you should just content yourself with downloading some stuff that was made thirty years ago. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Ramleh's greatest cassette Hiss, volume two.

Ramleh ‎– "We Created It, Let's Take It Over Vol 1" (Pure Records) 1995/1982

Ramleh;- Noise Super group combination of Kleistwahr, Consumer Electronics, and Whitehouse members; but then again aren't all these people in every Power Electronics/noise band from the early eighties? Listening to their records, you could easily be mistaken to think they are all the same record anyway!? Taken in isolation, these works are superb damaged pieces of dysfunctional non-music, that challenge the listener in their very definition as 'Music'; but, I'd struggle to identify the difference between most of them, except maybe Whitehouse, and even they sound a lot like Consumer Electronics, or vice versa. This, three volume, compilation, gathers together the best of the early cassette releases by this anti-super group; in this case from "Onslaught"(Iphar 1982), and "31/05/1962" (Broken Flag 1982). The normal adjectives of vicious atonal dissonant racket applies. Great listening for depressives, and/or angry loners. And, YAAAAAAWN, we get the obligatory Nazi on the info sheet above. I suppose without Nazi's we wouldn't have anything on the TV, no Methadone, and we wouldn't have landed on the moon, so they're not that bad, are they????.........oh, hang on, we didn't land on the moon did we?............Whoever, "we",are!

Various Artists ‎– "Neuengamme" (Broken Flag ‎– BF 04) 1983

Another classic Industrial Noise compilation, this time from Broken flag, "Neuengamme". A major pastime in the Industrial ranks was who knew the most obscure Nazi Labour/Conentration/Extermination camp, and Neuengamme probably won the prize. Essentially a forced labour brick factory/prison near Hamburg. Adding somewhat to the spreading Holocaust fatigue that caused 60% of young people in a recent poll, to say that Hitler was a fictional character, and Sherlock Holmes was the real deal......; maybe that has more to do with state instigated institutionalized stupidity. The bleak fact is that we(the Human race), are doomed to repeat this dark episode in recent history; rather like how these power electronic bands are doomed to repeat themselves until they disappear up their own anal staircases. Never has there been a blinder Blind alley, than Power Electronics,and/or Extreme Industrial Noise. These groups are suffocated by their own inflexibility. Like their old mate, Adolf H, they are so extreme in the execution of their dodgy dogma that they have left themselves with nowhere to go. Like A.H. only a tactical withdrawal would save their art. This was achieved very successfully by the likes of Coil, NWW,and that bloke from Unkommuniti when he became Stereolab; but Whitehouse, and friends, insisted on fighting their own Stalingrad, and still haven't surrendered! This tape is full of this Stalingrad style Noise, with classics from the excellent italian black shirt, M.B., and Consumer Electronics, among other White Noise Supremacists. Great non-music for angry politicized loners with a chip on their shoulder.......frankly, something we should all aim to be. "Fuck the I.R.A." should be our anthem as we march together to violently remove the Shadow Government, and smash the evil corporations that are enslaving us. Neuengamme is really a symbolic reference to the system we are trapped in for the rest of our lives. A Forced labour camp with plasma screen TV's; which they'll take away as a punishment beating equivalent, if we turn away from the shopping mall. They don't need guns, they got "stuff" to buy ; a consumer Treblinka, easily reachable by environmentally friendly Bus.

Whitehouse ‎– "Psychopathia Sexualis" (Come Organisation ‎– WDC 883027 1982

Back in 1980, the general population were relatively free from choice and information overload. Horror movies were still frightening, and one had to actively search out music such as this. Consequently music wasn't as devalued as it today, with the advent of the everything now culture of the post-internet world. Murderers were generally seen as horrific figures, but with the torrent of information, and understanding of Human behaviour, we now see these people as pathetic rather than just psychopathic. This lessens the impact of this record for the modern ears somewhat. Having said that, play this record to the most of the population of the iPhone miniverse, and you would still get disturbed looks of classic incomprehension. Yes, musically, it still has the ability to fuck up people's worlds, and make them wanna smash this cassette in fits of ignorant anger. Which is the main aim of Whitehouse's ear piercing noise. Most of the tracks are introduced by some eastern bloc sounding Psycho expert; probably Dr. Richard von Krafft-Ebing*. I dunno if it is he, or Mr Bennett who didn't know the real name of the Boston Strangler(Albert de Salvo). All the other killers get their birth names, except he?! Plenty of Wasp frying synth abuse permeates this tape, accompanying the standard crazed screeching from W. Bennett. There are plenty of uncomfortable moments, and room clearing cacophony;- guaranteed to form the ice at parties, or even better, start a fight amongst the Townies/chavs at the local discothéque. They don't make 'em like this anymore.........no, wait a minute, Whitehouse still make 'em like this. in fact so do, Ramleh, Consumer Electronics, and many many more do; not available in shops. *'Psychopathia Sexualis' is based on the classic medical work by Dr. Richard von Krafft-Ebing, but inspired by the '120 Days of Sodom' by the Marquis de Sade, whose spirit lives on…? Trainspotters corner: Glen Michael Wallis of Konstrukivits is on this recording as a member of the group. A2 and A5 recorded Live Action 5. A6 recorded recorded Live Action 2.
