Various Artists – "Tokyo Flashback" (P.S.F. Records – PSFD-12) 1991

The original Tokyo Psychedelic noise sampler,or volume 1, which features several bands who would appear on most of the follow up Tokyo Flashback volumes to come. The usual suspects are there again, and, as always, Keiji Haino appears twice, solo and as part of Fushitsusha. Which doesn't help the westerners' misconception that there weren't many Japanese bands in Japan. The flood started here in a vane attempt to save us all from Grunge.

Afflicted Man ‎– "The Complete Recordings" (1979-82)

Being Christian is some kind of psychological illness, but then again it has lots of stuff in common with Punk Rock. All encapsulated in the classic ,but fractured outsider punk personality of Steve Hall.
Both Dogma's are full of glaring conradictions, which has their High-Priests muttering wildly opposite statements, although I've yet to hear of a Punk Rock Pedophile as of yet...there's still time.
Joke time.....Q.What's the difference between Acne and a Priest?
A. Acne doesn't cum on yer face before you're Twelve.
Funny huh?
Yeah the morally repugnant Steve Hall embdies the most dramatic shift of polar opposites since Saul turned into Paul on the road to Damascus. If the same journey was made today Paul would have certainly been tranformed, not into a Saint, but into smoldering body parts as he triggers an Improvised Explosive device left there by Islamic State operatives several years hence.
Oh,yes. Mr Afflicted turned from a violent,Nazi flag waving, obnoxious, beer swilling drug and glue abuser.......as in a tabloid newspaper's idea of what a Punk Rocker was, and Steve indeed lived out these  press headlines to the letter;......into a meek and mild Born again Christian. He shifted from 'Punks Not Dead' to 'Jesus' Not Dead' in a matter of hours after chancing upon a devious God Squadder in his squat, banging on about how to let Jesus in your heart.
Here's Hall's version of  how Hall turned into Paul, literally, on the road to the 100 Club for the last time:
"My brother was talking to a guy at the time," he recalls, "who was sharing to him about the Lord Jesus Christ. I asked this bloke, 'Come on, how do you get this Jesus anyway?', in the kind of way that made it look like I didn't care. But deep down I was interested, because no one could help me out and I was desperate for help. He just said to me that Jesus could live in your heart. And I was riding up the road on the motorbike after that just saying, 'If you're there Jesus...' It was a matter, like it is for all of us, of just taking that first step, and once I had I'd never felt anything like it. I really felt God come into my heart and my life and that's what made me cry. It made me burst into tears, I just could not believe what was going on."
Now don't go getting any idea's you lot! I know how impressionable you "The Public" are.....and bloody dangerous too. A the drop of a pay rise, or a compliment you lot can vote in a Hitler or a moron(Trump),or,as in the case of the British,be the only electorate in UK History to vote away Freedom as in Brexit, and Freedom of Movement!
We can also turn into blinkered religious idiots at the mere mention of our mortality.
Maybe Steven was always looking for a Religion, and found it in Punk Rock. The only downpoint was that Punk didn't offer eternal life,no matter wat Wattie (of the Exploited) says.
Luckily Afflicted Man never sang about Jesus, for good reason,as ALL religious pop is appaling....but also funny if its done correctly.
More in the David Koresh school for twisted morals than Handel's Messiah.Christianity should definitely stick with Classical music, and leave 'pop' alone.
Afflicted Man's music is classic DIY Outsider Punk, recorded and released on a shoestring budget, often presented to the world in a candystriped Sweetie bag,the kind that you got your Pick'n'Mix in from Woolworths. His songs’ reliance on repetition have as much to do with the limits of one man’s taste and abilities, along with the studio capabilities of the times, as any sort of applied aesthetics(I didn't write that bit).Anyway, his incredibly rare records feature an impressive talent-stretching cornucopia of sounds, from one chord punk to PiL-type dub noise to glue-fuelled psychedelia, with Get Stoned Ezy (1982) a jaw dropping display of zero-budget production and incompetent guitar freakouts;and we all love that inadvised marriage don't we?
As for live shows:
Hall said: "We had a bit of a political following that I don't really like to mention too much... a Nazi British Movement following. It was our fault a bit, because we got ourselves a following and we just thought 'let's run with this.' I guess we did that because we had no morals really, in one sense, and so we went down that road."
Again he had an uncontrolled need to belong to a religious movement, even though he was obviously the Doubting Thomas of the British Nazi Movement....but as I've mentioned before...Nazi's are Funny......in fact so are Christians......er...and 'Punx' for that matter.
Stevie fills us in on the end of his Punk career:
It wasn't long before he realised that there was no chance that the two lives could co-exist. "At the end of the day I got born again," he says, matter-of-fact, "and I tried to witness to the rest of them, but they didn't want to know. Then I just felt God pulling me out. I played the 100 Club and I was looking across the audience, jumping all over the place, and I just thought, 'What am I doing here?'(Yeah I've been there myself JZ) I came out of there and I didn't go back." Moments later, God began to hit Hall with heavy doses of grace and mercy. "After that I got married, and we had three lovely daughters. At least the God Delusion seemed to save him from his obvious mental crisis,as he admits..."Being saved took me away from the whole drugs scene and the punk music and I really came into Christianity in a full way. I was baptised in the Holy Spirit and started to do God's work.".......fucking hell!.....
Well, i'll help Steve doing God's work, and give his music away for free.Jesus would certainly approve, and maybe even have liked the music too?....notice the use of the past tense in reference to Steven's personal saviour?...if you didn't, you need saving....Please Jesus save us from your followers.

ÜWAN - "Ü2" (Year Zero Records YEAR 023) 2013

Gawd Blimey, luv-a-duck, guvn'r, I forgot about this album i made back in the early 'teennies' for the magnificent Year Zero Records netlabel.(clears throat)
An improvised guitar drone fest on the subject of the abject U2.As the first Üwan album was called "Ü1",'twas only natural that the second outing would be monikered "Ü2".So the connotations were obvious, and a chance to slag off this terrible group with scything six string noise.
Basically,it's another Shackleton in a Ü-boat style exploration into the eternal combination of Guitar, Drums, effects, and sound collage from our favourite free rock improv combo,Üwan.A kind of an subconscious abstract tribute to U2's unaltering longevity. This is what you'd get if one placed Bono's career minded stadium rockers' back catalogue into a food blender.I know i'd like to push a certain vertically challenged lead singer of an Irish stadium rock band's face into a blender anyway.

All the notes are there, but not necessarily in the right order, you'd be pleased to know.
What we have here is an improvised drone and feedback ballet score for people who hate ballet. An opera for the deaf,or a painting for the blind. But above all for people who hate U2's guts!

Don't forget, there's Ü3,and Ü4, too!

Dumbo - Drums

Guru Guru ‎– "UFO" (Ohr ‎– OMM 56 005) 1970

Probably my favourite Kraut Freak-out album from Rocks golden era is "UFO",This is how to abuse an electric guitar, whilst walking a delicate line between control and chaos, with a loose but tight rhythm unit rumbling along behind the electric storm clouds of Ax Genrich.
The sister of a now deceased German friend of mine, Uli, who looked not unlike a member Guru Guru; told me at his funeral, that Mani Neumeier  (the drummer of Guru Guru)once suggested that she have sex with him.A request to which, she understandably refused vigorously.Looking at the band pictures its a wonder any of these Free Rock legends got laid at all.
From this peak, they slowly decended that well trodden down escalator to Jazz Rock Hell.

Guru Guru ‎– "Wiesbaden 1972" (Garden Of Delights ‎– CD 129) 2007

Our favourite teutonic free rock trio take their lengthy freak-outs to Wiesbaden, as they approach the "KanGuru" album era.A suitably ragged set is unleashed on the sparce audience in the Wartburg Pub on november 4th 1972,and then some clever fucker recorded it!? Then an even cleverer fucker made it available for free download.

Ash Ra Tempel ‎– "The Private Tapes Vol. 4" (Manikin Records ‎– MRCD 7014) 1996

They all do it at some point don't they?
Get ideas beyond their station and Go Jazz Fusion!?.......but not the good Jazz Fusion like Miles Davis etc, this is awful Pat Methany style Jazz Rock fusion.Krautrock Legends, Guru Guru also befell this same fate on their 1974 "Dance Of The Flames" album, terrible stuff.Even Zoot Horn Rollo went 'Jazz' on his sole solo album a few years ago, but he's a better guitarist than Göttsching,so he got away with it.Basically, Jazz and electric guitar shouldn't be said in the same sentence.....ever!
I suppose there are some Pat Methany fans who will take offence at my use of their hero as the comparison point for 'awful' on the Jazz Fusion barometer of shite; but thats how it is on these pages.Heaven knows the pain just a few notes of any Methany tunes have caused the boredom sector of my delicate frontal lobe,so he deserves it.
As terrible the first three tracks are, its more than made up for by  repetitive sequencer driven proto-trance number "Niemand Lacht Rückwärts".
Finishing off this episode we have a rather below par Ash Ra Tempel freak out.....sounding...dare I say....a bit Jazzy(!?)in places....not good.

Ash Ra Tempel - "The Private Tapes Vol. 2" (Manikin Records ‎– MRCD 7012) 1996

Manuel Göttsching is often credited with inventing 'House'(shame on you!), with the mind numbingly boring "E2-E4" album. Its repetative synth lines were hardly original, and the terrible drum machine in the background wasn't either;but that LP and "Trans-europe Express" seem to put this mind-controling genre firmly in the land that gave us MK Ultra.Maybe Göttsching was a fourth Reich Nazi drone, programed to infiltrate the counter-culture and stealthily introduce this form of fake decadant marching musick to the masses...very sucessfully I may add.
Personally,I place the blame at the feet of the minimal composers of the sixties and seventies,Glass, Reich, Riley etc, plus Kraftwerk...maybe?
The first three tracks on volume two wouldn't be out of place at some drugged up chill-out area at a late eighties illegal rave party somewhere near Basildon (Essex?)
For me, the live Ash Ra Tempel track is the reason to have this in your collection. Live improvised electric freak outs are my favorite background music. You can read to it, take drugs to it, invite the neighbours round for a Fondue, its perfect music...even if it is done by a bunch of West German hippies who would have loved to be Pink Floyd in 1967......in fact I would have loved to be Pink Floyd in 1967 too!?...Who in their right mind wouldn't?

Amon Düül II ‎– "Phallus Dei" (Liberty ‎– LBS 83 279 I) 1969

Don't wanna bore you with too much obvious 'Krautrock' stuff, and you've probably all got this,soooooo,.....oh alright then, here's Amon Düül II's first album, which, retrospectively, lost out in the race to be the first 'Krautrock' album in perpetuity to Amon Düül mark I.
If you like a bunch of hippies all playing their instruments at the same time then this is most definitely for you.Like a Grateful Dead live bootleg with the really boring bits on a loop, this is 1969 encapsulated in one small package.
Of course I exaggerate, but i can't see what made this seem so 'out there' for its time. Not all 'Krautrock' albums sounded like this however. 'twas one of those made-up scenes designed to package a collection of recordings that you're supposed to like 'if you're Cool'.It'd be like calling all the groups from the UK in the sixties, Brit Wave....total nonsense....like that toe-curling Britpop nonsense which ended guitar driven pop for good.
Krautrock was just ,basically, the German arm of the Progressive Rock fad but produced some very unique groups, due to the fact that they didn't have the same commercial pressures that groups in the UK and USA had....such is artistic freedom, and nothing whatsoever to do with nationality, or scenes.
I much prefer Amon Düül I's output to this poor man's Electric Ladyland made for and by homeless hippie types, and wanna be political terrorists.
All this stuff was in the 'European Rock' section in my local record emporium, not a mention of 'Krautrock',a phrase that became more popular in the 90's when this stuff was very a la mode.New discoveries of truly terrible 'Krautrock' recordings were made almost weekly.Lets face it, most of it was utterly awful rubbish, like in all artificial scenes. The cream naturally rose to the top, Ash Ra, Can, Neu, TD,Cluster, etc.....notably NOT including Amon Düül II....and all became equally apalling after 1974.
"Phallus Dei", or...tee hee hee giggle giggle...God's Penis, is likely their best album,or maybe 'Yeti' is...they both sound exactly the same so its a toss up.

Amon Düül ‎– "Psychedelic Underground" (Metronome ‎– MLP 15.332) 1969

Not only is it the fiftieth anniversary of the Moon Landings, the Manson Killings,'Trout Mask Replica',and Woodstock, its 50 years since the birth of Krautrock on vinyl, via West German hippie cult jam miesters,Amon Düül.
For me, any bunch of middle class drop-outs who hang out in communes are liable to be labelled a 'Cult'.
Amon Düül grew out of the Kronwinkl commune in Munich that mixed radical political criticism with a unique vision of free-form improvisation.Sounds like a lot of fun does it not?Especially when those fun-lovin' Nutty socialists, the Baader-Meinhof gang, or The Red Army Faction, started to hang with the Amon Düül crew.
Chris Karrer himself stated when interviewed by Audion Mgazine and also, Off the record, Renate and Christian Burchard, among others  concurred on this matter, all stating that these sexy terrorists would bring a whole groupie crowd, booze and drugs with them. But they were really more trouble than beneficial in the long run. It seems at first that no one knew of their politics, until the band's commune was raided by the cops.....I find it hard to believe that the Baader-Meinhoff lot could possibly keep their mouths shut about their socialist utopia, and bore everybody shitless, but after the Police raids they were swiftly moved on.Or maybe they were moved on to avoid endless monologues about how removing incentives from life is a really good thing;and how this could be schieved by killing a few people, and hi-jacking Lufthansa jets.I can imagine that they were potentially even more tiresome than Crass.
There's no information as to whether those trendy terrorists actually joined in the Jam session that led to the four Amon Düül albums or not...personally I'd like to think that they did, which cranks up the ghoul status a few notches at least.
They missed out on an opportunity to be the teutonic Manson family by half a hijacked inch.
Personally I prefer Amon Düül to Amon Düül II, as the offshoot was far too musicianly than version 'I'.There's a much freer tribalistic feel to Amon Düül one that I prefer.
I dunno if this was the first 'Official' Krautrock album or was it 'Monster Movie' by CAN....I kinda view CAN as something different myself, outside of the Krautrock bracket, alongside Neu. So, that would leave this album as the official begining of Krautrock then or what?...discuss.

Fire, Water, Air (Ya Ho Wa 13 with Sky Saxon) ‎– "Golden Sunrise" ( Higher Key Records ‎– ELR-84510) 1977

Out of all the 'Cults' who thought they were musical genius's, Ya Ho Wa 13 were probably the most proficient.'Fire,Water,Air' were an offshoot fronted by garage psych legend Sky Saxon. They were so cut off from what was happening outside their world that it remained 1969 forever, even in 1977.Just like in my world it's permanently 1980, so who can blame them? Not me...in fact i actively encourage it,like a version of the Lost World, complete with dinosaurs,of the musical kind.
'Golden' is a much used adjective among the cult community, and the post Yod death Ya Ho Wa 13 weren't gonna be left out.
Their guru, Father Yod, may have died a couple of years earlier in a bizarre hang gliding accident in Hawaii, but his influence was still looming large amongst his devotees. One of whom was Sky Saxon late of The seeds, who was a long term hanger-on at his Yodship's commune.
If you want more info on the Yodster and his young hippie chums, as well as more Ya Ho Wa 13 albums, then CLICK HERE!
There are more posthumous albums to exhume in the following posts also, so don't be afraid.
This stuff is mostly excellent free psychedelia with that essential element of madness that we all love in other people.
I could listen to this stuff all day.

ZOG - "Thee First Commandment Of ZOG" (Year Zero records YEAR038) 2016

Free improvised Jazz/Noise Rock from deepest France. Featuring former Electric Buttocks anchorman, Christophe Medina on drums and vocals, Blind Man Walking Phil Allison on Tenor Saxophone, erstwhile 'Outsider' Nadine Aleman, knob twiddling on the Korg MS10, and Sampler, with Jon Zchivago clawing his own raw path on,what can only be described as a, Bass Guitar.
All music is improvised in one take, with no rehearsals or discussion beforehand, and only the minimum of editing afterwards. Like a Dogma 95 for music.
ZOG channels every dead or dying musician's soul from the last 60 years of popular music, as if remote viewed from one of the plusher corners of purgatory. If this doesn't excite you, you're dead already.
For terrestrial references, think Archie Shepp fronting Can's better half of Suzuki and Liebezeit , with a dash of Hawkwind, and Jean Jacques Burnel gene spliced with Bootsy Collins; a sort of funkier version of John Zorn's Painkiller without the boring dub bits.

PS...ZOG is avaiable for gigs, festivals, bar mitzvah's and children's partys. Leave any possible leads in the comments section.

不失者 (Fushitsusha) ‎– "悲愴 (Pathétique)" (P.S.F. Records ‎– PSFD-50) 1994

Yes, all the covers are the same, and to the untrained ear, so are the contents.
Yet, here we have a full spectrum Fushitsusha workout. Starting with the slow descent into hell to find that we are already there, march, of track one.
Then we have what a Punk Rock anthem would sound like if it was made of glass and smashed violently on a steel floor.
"Song" number three shifts from a "catchy" yet dissonant, descending, mantra-rock groove into more improvised, feedback bliss at all the "right", “wrong” moments.
Finally, at well over 40 minutes, track four stretches out a solid ocean of distortion into one of those “timeless / infinite moments”that make the terrifying  prospect of eternal life seem almost desirable.
Probably my personal favourite 不失者 album, less sprawling, and to the point than the other epics.
What I can't work out is how "悲愴" translates into bloody french? This has to be bollocks, surely?
To ease this minor irritation the album is also referred to as "4" or "Hisou"; which is anglicised Japanese for.....mmmm....Pathetic!

不失者(Fushitshusha) ‎– 寓意的な誤解 (Allegorical Misunderstanding)- (Avant ‎– AVAN 008) 1993

Fushitsusha captured in laid back form, in a Studio. Noisey freak outs are replaced by medium paced, disjointed, improvised cleanish guitar slashing; backed up by barely syncopated bass and drums. 灰野敬 (Haino Keiji) interjects with his trademark tortured whispers and anguished screams, to make a kind of Japanese Blues, totally devoid of any afro-american influence. This is a good thing is it not?

不失者 (Fushitsusha) ‎– "不失者 (Fushitsusha, or Double Live)" - (P.S.F. Records ‎– PSF-3/4) 1989

After all these Jandek posts, one turns ones mind to similar artistes from other country's of the post-rock'n'roll world. You know the one's, who plough the same deeply unpopular furrow continuously for decades irrespective of public, or critical opinion.
For example, I can think of Whitehouse,or even Mark E. Smith (but maybe he's too popular?) , from the UK, The Dead C from New Zealand, Magma from France, and 不失者, or Fushitsusha from Japan.
I suppose there's also Merzbow, but even that's got the smell of Industrial chic that is increasingly popular these days. Fushitsusha straddle that awkward no-man's land middle ground between, Noise, Metal, incompetence, and the Avant Garde.
Keiji Haino (灰野敬) is the Jandek of Metal, who plays his guitar as if the instrument was being tortured for information, emitting screams and yells as he applies the electrodes to its genitalia. The vocal sounds Haino regurgitates are also from a similar place, like a political prisoner before he's dunked in the bath of shit.
Also admirable is the fact that this group(formed in 1978) played live for a decade before they even released a record(this is their first release!),and even longer before they even ventured into a recording studio.Hardly a commercial thought entered their pure little minds.
The thing about improvisation, is that there is a very real need to keep it in the moment; a once only experience, never to be repeated or relived. That is the purest form of improvisation in a live environment. Here it has been caged for this insane double album, so we can stare through the bars at this trapped animal; and what a vicious wild beast it is.
The exception for improvised music, is if it is done in a studio direct to record,as it needs an audience to exist.Fushitsusha managed to hold on another few years before they took that route.
Enjoy this primal blast of Free ambient freak out noise rock, created in the moment, and captured for you to reanimate in the future.

Jandek - "Lost Cause" (Corwood 0759) 1992

Strummy, tuneful Jandek;ranging from the cute straight pop of ‘Babe I Love You’, to the dysfunctional Tim Buckley before ECT "Crack a Smile". That's side one.
Then we get side two!
A twenty minute freeform freak out called "The Electric End" , full of stream of consciousness guitar abuse, childlike drum abuse, and an irritating tinnitus inducing whistling noise.Jandek’s version of ‘L.A. Blues’ or Coltrane's ‘Om’. Nineteen minutes of atonal, psychotic BLARE featuring noise, crash, howl, one of those bird whistles and someone trying to make that weird sound that the 13th Floor Elevators did on ‘You're Gonna Miss Me’.OUCH!

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "To The Principles For The Children" ( Higher Key Records ‎– KEY 001) 1974

Sort of disturbing this; all those kids on the cover are probably Father Yod's, fathered under the normal cult conditions of cynical brainwashing techniques on dysfunctional and naive teenage women.Classic paedophile outfit on the rear sleeve photo, with the band worshipping a Yod on earth; disgusting.
That said, and although I can't listen to Gary Glitter anymore (The Glitter Band excepted), this insane spontaneous outsider DIY acid rock drivel is up there with evolution and the creation of the cosmos, as one of the greatest but inevitable accidents ever to stumble into existence.
And yes, he really did die in a bizarre hang gliding accident!!!!

Track Listing:
1. Side A (16:58)
2. Side B (10:37)

Personnel:
- Father Yod / vocals, kettle drum, gong
- Djinn / guitars

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "I'm Gonna Take You Home" (Higher Key Records ‎– HKR 3309) 1974

The UK had Jimmy Saville, but the USA had father Yod. At least his deflowering of children was done on some hippie commune, hid away on Hawaii, rather than on national Television!? Outsider DIY hippie monolith of a record.Note standard cult leader pose with teenage victim.......i think i'm gonna be sick.Displaying those pure hippie values of shagging as many girls as possible,as young as possible,in the name of "Free Love"; and grabbing as much money as possible from the idiots who think your ideas are 'Right On Maaaan'.
But i am prepared to put that aside, because this music is definitely "OUT THERE"! Contains some of the best acid guitar playing that transcends incompetence that you are ever likely to hear. This record is an audio record of a group of minds being flushed away. Are there really people like this, or are they just as manufactured as the kids from fame? What i wanna know is did the kids from Ya Ho Wha 13 go to a entertainment training facility to do this?..........i'm not totally sure but i probably think........not!
Operation Yewtree international anyone?

Track Listing:

1. One (7:46)
2. Two (7:14)
3. Three (5:27)
4. Four (16:33)
5. Five (12:55)

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "Penetration - An Aquarian Symphony" (Higher Key Records ‎– HKR3307) 1974

Peace ,Love, and Understanding?... my Arse!.....All those hippies were about was how to invent some pseudo-philosophy that will seduce young women into bed......and what happens then is pretty well summed up in the title of this lp.
As awful as these misguided sexual predators and their victims were, they made grade "A" aural lunacy that is a shear delight......no-one is allllll bad. This record should have made history as the first music to be sectioned.
The Gong sounds alone on "Ho" should be presented with an award for the best aural experience since Godzilla screeched his(or was it a her?) first gut scraping vowel sound."Yodzilla" seems an appropriate noun for that gong.
'Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony' was intended to be Ya Ho Wha 13's masterwork, acting as a Merkabah of sorts to elevate its listeners to a heightened state of consciousness - & I must say, it does the trick!
Take your meds and revel in the Outsider DIY joy that is "Penetration - an aquarian symphony"! (That Title!!!....ugh!.....Shudder!!!!)

Track Listing:

1. Yod He Vau He (11:25)
2. Ho (5:32)

4. Ya Ho Wha (13:24)

Father Yod and the Spirit of '76 - "Anthology" (Higher Key records) 1973-74

DIY music ,i'll admit did not exist only between 1978 and 1983.......the hippies (spit!), were very adept at self producing their own releases too.My favourite of which was the various releases by cult leader Father Yod and his hippie followers.
Father Yod was really James Edward Baker ,born on July 4, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Baker earned the Silver Star as United States Marine in WWII and became an expert in Jujitsu. He moved to California to become a Hollywood stuntman and became influenced by the Nature Boys, a Los Angeles-based group of beatniks who lived a natural lifestyle, maintained vegetarian diets, and lived "according to Nature's Laws."Baker also studied philosophy, religion, and esoteric spiritual teachings, even becoming a Vedantic monk for a time. He later became a devoted follower of Yogi Bhajan, a Sikh spiritual leader and teacher of Kundalini Yoga.
In 1969, Baker founded the Source Restaurant in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles, on the Sunset Strip. The restaurant served organic vegetarian food, with such celebrity regulars as John Lennon, Julie Christie, and Marlon Brando.Founded in 1973 in the Los Angeles area, Ya Ho Wha 13, otherwise known Yahowha 13 is a psychedelic rock band fronted by Father Yod, spiritual leader of a religious cult/commune called the Source Family. Ya Ho Wha without the vowels and spaces reduces to YHWH, the tetragrammaton. The band recorded nine LPs full of their broken down and deranged psychedelic nonsense with tribal drums and crackling guitars, some of which were completely improvised jam sessions, others which contained more conventional rock songs.
Members of The Source Family, who lived in the Hollywood Hills in the early 1970s, had decided to fuse their musical 'talents' and 'spirituality' by forming an improvisational, psychedelic group. They began to press LPs in 1973, most of which were recorded after hours of meditation between 3:00-6:00 a.m. in a soundproofed garage that served as the musicians’ studio at the family's communal residence. All of the records with Father Yod’s participation were completely improvised, with no rehearsals or overdubs. Most of the albums were pressed in small runs of only 500 to 1000 copies on the Higher Key label. They were sold to the general public in Father Yod’s popular vegetarian Source Restaurant for $10 each. Though only nine LPs were produced and released, it is rumored that more than 65 albums were recorded by the group but were lost over the years.
The band changed members occasionally, morphing into various incarnations, from Father Yod and the Spirit of ’76 to Ya Ho Wha 13 to The Savage Sons of Ya Ho Wha, Yodship, and Fire Water Air; but the key players were always the same: (Djin Aquarian on guitar, Octavious Aquarian on drums, and Sunflower Aquarian on bass). Father Yod does not appear on all their album releases, but for those on which he participates, he handles lead vocals and percussion, via a kettle drum. Former pop star Sky Saxon of The Seeds had joined the Source Family in 1973 and occasionally appeared on the band's recordings.
Yod had established a council of 13 women and later sealed these women as his wives. On August 25, 1975, despite having no previous hang-gliding experience, YaHoWha used a hang glider to leap off a 1300-foot cliff on the eastern shore of Oahu.He crash-landed on the beach and died nine hours later. After three days of vigil, YaHoWha was cremated.

The albums from the first incarnation of the father yod nutters was, Father Yod And The Spirit Of 76(Ironic as he never made it beyond 1975?). The downloads of which can be found below.
BUT, I would recommend the Yo Ha Wha 13 records following this post, namely "Penetration- an aquarian symphony" and "I'm Gonna Take You Home", being the places to start. They being far superior and weirder than any of the others.
The Covers are interesting enough,"Kohoutek" is like a manson family slogan scrawled on a wall with a hollywood starlet's freshly spilled blood.
"Contraction" features Yod as creepy cross between(in)sanity claus and Chuck manson, surrounded by his blood crazed followers.
Then aptly following Contraction, we see a proud sexual predator/cult leader holding one of his progeny, on the cover of "Expansion".......quite sickening; but the music kicks ass in an "out there" kind of way.
