Blowhole/Big Joey - "Blowhole/Big Joey" (Self Released Cassette) 1988

Jeph Jerman(City of Worms,Hands To) and friends making a maelstrom of an improvised racket in Colorado's versions of the LAFMS's Airway. Both Blowhole and Big Joey make a fine effort in exorcising the Ghost of Albert Ayler. Blowhole is the more Free Jazzy of the collectives, and Big Joey is the more Free Rocky version,albeit an extreme falling apart version of Free Rock. A mid western free improv from inside the Tornado,chewing up all in its path.Life affirming chaos indeed.

Blowhole Side: Recorded at One Big Studio, August 1987, except Deewbs, recorded at the house of Death. And Einstein, recorded at the Mud palace Summer, 1984.
Big Joey Side: Recorded at Blue Slug, Summer 1988, except Introit/very Droll, Paco is My Co-Pilot and Greez, recorded at the Annex 3/13/88 by Paco de Dunce.

Jeph Jerman's other most prolific project,his solo project I assume,is Hands To. Where an interest in manipulating field recordings,and mutating found sounds, into glitchy and scraping sound bytes, came into the foreground. Many of these tracks sound like those mysterious phone calls you get, from persons unknown, who didn't lock their mobile phone and left it in their pocket to randomly phone someone.

What do we have here then? Cover art by Bill Burroughs' BBF Brion Gysin? Music designed for use with Gysin's Dream machine?
First you gotta have a Dream machine, so download the plans to build one here.
Then you gotta have a record player that has 78rpm.....which I haven't.
Then you've gotta have a Cassette Player, which hardly anyone has anymore.
Luckily,you no ,longer need the cassette deck,thanks to this handy 320k mp3 rip. So you can use your digital reproduction device to fill your room with these scraping drones and looped noise while you place your closed eyes a few inches away from your new Dream Machine you've just built(on the 78rpm record deck you just got ripped off for),and just let the hallucinations flood in and meet God.
You probably don't need the Dream Machine at all.Just place an electric fan in front of a light bulb, not forgetting to switch them both on, and visit fairyland without any Peyote,or having to spend hours cutting out the template for Gysin's fancy lampshade.(no visit to the junk shop needed either)......Or just down some Peyote!
Better still, just sit in a dimly lit room and listen to this cassette.

Now, courtesy of Mr CoW himself, Jeph Jerman, I have more understanding of the environment that this fine work was created  in. Colorado Springs sounds like Stepford, of  'Wives' fame, but with that force of earthly evil,the US armed forces fencing them all in. Surrounded by the American Taliban, squashing any alternative lifestyle or opinions out of town. Like the' Invasion of the Bodysnatchers'; but with the 'Christians' pointing out any passing Bohemian for absorption into the whole.
I don't know what the collective noun for a group of Christians could possibly be? We have a Flock of Sheep, a Murder of Magpies,an Implausibility of Gnus(!), a Flange of Baboons,but what about Christians? May I suggest 'a 'Stain' of Christians'? Or, how about a 'Stupid' of Christians?.....Any further suggestions leave them in the comments section, or mail them to Jeb Bush.
A collection of Muslims could be a "Misogyny"? Buddhists, a Dysfunction of...? And Jews????.....don't go there,or stand accused of Holocaust Denial(ironically a jail-able offense in' former' Nazi Germany)!.....oh...ok...how about a 'Nice' of Jews?...isn't this fun?......... a 'Twat' of Scientologists anyone?....no thanks.......er.....,is that the Police banging on my door!?.....this may be my last post outside of the re-education center!

City Of Worms ‎– "Crumnants" (Sound Of Pig ‎– SOP 129) 1987

Zoviet*France's American cousin's from the harsh industrial landscape of Colorado. Contrast the oppressive mountainous vista's,endless blue skies,wide open natural spaces,and fluffy clouds with the easy life of the Slag Heaps,Smog,claustrophobic terraced housing and slate grey clouds of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Zoviet*France's hometown).Those chaps in Z*F had it easy compared with the poor sods who made up City Of Worms. Somehow they made the same style of repetitive urbano-ethnic rhythmic noise; but with completely different,some would say, opposite, influences. Z*F had coal mining, unemployment,hopelessness,and damp bleak post industrial squalor. COW had skiing, wide open spaces, and awe-inspiring landscapes. It's all becoming clear to me now, like those apathy inducing clear blue skies of Colorado.Oh,those cruel dark satanic mills of the Rocky Mountains!Its all a bit like that classic Monty Python sketch about The London Playwright and his Coal Mining Son...."There's nowght(nothing) wrong with Gala luncheons Lad!"

This is one of those stereo recordings of a cavernous,but, outmoded factory in its last days before the bulldozers move in; which they do on side two.Another ersatz photocopy of a society in terminal decay,that we've heard a thousand times since 1977,but it still sounds great.....and unerringly accurate.

Frequent collaborator with Illusion Of safety is City Of Worms; and side B features such a collaboration as City Of Safety (Geddit?),including a certain Jim O'Rourke of Sonic yoof fame.
City Of Worms themselves, are a variety of rhythmic fuzzy ,in between radio stations, kind of looped static ambiance; not unlike Zoviet*France.
