Borbetomagus – "Barbed Wire Maggots" (Agaric Records – Ag 1983) 1983

Borbetomagus is a trio of Don Dietrich (reeds) Jim Sauter (reeds) and Donald Miller (guitar) and additionally Brian Doherty (electronics) Existing since the mid-seventies. This is free-improv "jazz" of the most extreme nature and its certainly not for the faint hearted, since heavy bone crushing walls of noise are their specialty.Yummy.
That sounds like something I'd like, and something that any supreme court judge in a MAGA hat would eagerly pass a death sentence or two for after the fast approaching american taliban take-over...er...takes over?
Remember when The Plastic People Of The Universe got jailed in Iron Curtain Czechoslovakia? Well, in a few weeks time, musicians like Borbetomagus may get their chance to taste prison food.
Remember also, when Uncle Adolf had a set-back democratically, and managed to pass the 'Enabling Act'back in 1933?....No?....fair enough,as we're all doomed to repeat it.The Orange small handed shredded wheat barneted one,has both chambers, the Supreme Court, and The Presidency, so whats there to stop him? The Handmaids Tale for everyone. Meanwhile, over in Liberal, communist Europe, the green light is given for Russia to enter Paris whenever they feel like unleashing the Nuke arsenal. The world will be split into three zones, under China, Russia, and Trumps USA......thanks be for our american chums.
This is,in fact, a good argument for the 2nd Amendment I suppose,so some gun toting Hick can off the Orange one in the mistaken premise that he's taking their guns away because he's a liberal Democrat...wrong Hicksville morons, its so he don't have to do no more Democratic stuff. Like Mr first against the wall actor Bob De Niro said..you'll never get rid of him. Tickets on sale soon for the live beheading of De Niro in Times aquare.
Enjoy.
I am informed that one of the members of Borbetomagus died in mysterious circumstances a few weeks ago.
So sad that he will never enjoy the rights of women being removed, heretics and artists imprisoned, and a hereditary dictatorship installed......and there's nothing that can stop this if they should so desire. If they don't its because they are too stupid to realise it...the doors open, and Elon's foot is placed, like the talentless salesman he is,to prevent it being closed.
This may seem exaggerated, but its happened before, and most recently by Trump's best mate, Mad Vlad himself.
Barbed Wire Maggots indeed....Just wait for that Russo-Sino army sweeping through the Eurasian land mass. The america's is for the Trump Dynasty, run like a Taliban out post of sanity.
Or, maybe ,our greatest hope is that RFK will refuse production,or even research of the vaccine for the next Pandemic on the grounds that is may cause autism in white kids and we'll all die.
That might be the sensible option; and i'm not just saying that because i'm already Autistic...even though i'm ashamed to be on the same divergent spectrum as E-Lon......maybe this is in fact an Alien Invasion?...that's actually makes more sense than contemporary reality.

The Blue Humans – "Clear To Higher Time" ( New Alliance Records – NARC 077) 1992

The Blue Humans are, basically ,that bloke from No-Wave Legends Mars;namely experimental guitarist Rudolph Grey, and a flux of artsy chums, such as ,the afore mentioned Alan Licht. Whom first came to notice in the late-1970s New York City post punk and trendier than thou downtown Noo Yawk art scene which also spawned such nerds as Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca and such like.
I thought all members of Mars had to be 'resting' actors, seems i'm wrong. The others went on to be completely unknown, but Rudolph made a meagre living attacking an out of tune guitar within yet without the medium of Free Improvisation, come on we've all done it? Especially mucking around on stage with various ad-hoc combo's such as The Blue Humans.
Rudolph wasn't just a pretty face y'know? 'Twas he wot wrote that much needed biography of acclaimed trash movie maker Edward D. Wood jr, the mind behind the worlds first anti-nuclear movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space"....a film some people have inexplicably labelled 'thee Worst Movie Ever Made' !????....which is of course far from the truth and very close to being utter bollocks.
Like Grey's music, Woods movies seemed to have been made up as they went along, and were, arguably.....very arguably as it turns out, the closest anyone has come to making a genuinely 'Free' Movie. An art concept drafted in from the Oort Cloud, beyond which dwells the mysterious Planet Nine.

The Max Factory – "Tudor City" -(Ecstatic Yod – actuel 5) 1995

The Max Factory is Alan Licht with or without friends.....that's what it says on the inner gatefold cover of another of that "Ass Run" series on that Father Yod label what we all dig so much.
So if you've ever been Licht by anyone called Alan, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't been Licht by someone called Alan, firstly 'Why Not?!',and secondly expect lots of spontaneous guitar noise akin to the sound of nails being scraped down an amplified chalk board.
If you have sensitive teeth, i advise caution when approaching this fine beast.

Fuzzhead – "El Saturn" (Ecstatic Yod - Actuel 7– FYPL-11) 1995

Another rather lovely interpretation of a BYG gatefold from the early seventies, this time involving improv weirdo's Fuzzhead from Cleveland (?) ,honoring original BYG artist, the Saturn dwelling Sun Ra.
Basically, garage-psychedelic freak-outs is what we have here, lengthy and totally improvised space jams that I'm sure Sun Ra would have approved of,even though he insists that all his music was written down and followed note for note. This I cannot apply to Fuzzhead, who, quite clearly are making this all up as they go along.Even daring to meddle with a few of Ra's Greatest Hits.Remember that K-Tel album,"The very Best of Sun Ra and
His Intergalactic Research Arkestra"? Not the

Sun Ra & His Solar Myth Arkestra one, that was on Ronco...not available in stores.
Just a quick note of interest, that Marshall Allen is still at the helm of the Sun Ra Arkestra, which is remarkable bearing in mind that he is in fact 100 years old and counting as this goes to press!?
However,Side 2 returns us all briefly,well,22 minutes worth anyway, to the bizarre mushroom and Ayahuasca influenced form of abstract Hip-Hop that Fuzzhead used to do in the early nineties.
It definitely is After The End of the World......Don't you know that yet?

Jandek – "Baltimore Saturday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0865) 2024

Yet another Jandek recording from 2009.This one has got electronics on it,so it's quite unique in the Jandek canon. Also Susan Alcorn appears again making weird noises on her pedal Steel Guitar.
If that don't make you wanna hear this double CD then there's something wrong with you....well...maybe not? It's a good one though.

Here's that tit (I notice he has two of them) who regularly threatens the safety of your much valued scribe
He's the fat one on the right, meeting his hero......I wonder if this was taken in 2009?...still waiting for the Vancouver release. He says he's gonna 'find me' if I post that......which of course I will.

Jandek – "Nashville Friday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0863) 2023

Another Live Jandek from the homeland of American music recorded in 2009 (again). Enough to make the Grand Ole Opry spontaneously combust.....so no bad thing.
On this outing we find one of spontaneous music's legends in Ladonna...er... Smith.....no relation I guess? Ladonna who played on all those batshit crazy Davey Williams records. And still scraps the viola in a complementarily warped fashion...as in both warped like a record, and warped like a mind.
One would love to see Jandek do a surprise appearance at the Grand Ole Opry one day,eh kids?
Here,we are treated to a singing Jandek avoiding tunes like obstacles in an obstacle race, skimming the jagged surface of every obstacle the sonic backing can conjure up.
Disc one seems to have a Horse theme running ,or should i say, cantering, asunder the rancid chunks of  dueling banjo's that accompany Jandek's dream of becoming a wild Mustang for the 8 long minutes this equine nightmare trots unsteadily along.
And we all like a nice Horse Theme don't we boys'n'girls?
And Yes, Sterling whips out the Fretless bass to further compound those heinous acts of violence against taste that occurred in the 1980's;but, Kajagoogoo this is most certainly NOT!

Jandek – "Vienna Wednesday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0862) 2023

As Hitler roamed the streets of pre-war Vienna searching for his raison d'etre, destiny would dictate that a professional nobody called Sterling Richard Smith would plough a similar furrow so often gouged by the talentless.
Adolf Schiklegruber would go on to adopt a single word as his nom de plume, just as Richard Smith would do a hundred years later, as a tradename for the clueless artwork they offered a disbelieving world. The Hitler one, was not gifted in the art department, even though he could paint an entire apartment in one afternoon.....TWO COATS! I think he sold even less paintings than Van Gogh....meaning ZERO.
But....Hitler committed the cardinal sin of the arts,...he gave up!? Then took out his frustrations as a narcissist down on his luck out on humanity......and we let him do it!
One thing Jandek certainly did NOT do, is give up. His art is...let's face it, total kaka, unless viewed in the whole, as a Gilbert and George style living concept. He is the Art,whereas Hitler was too stupid to realise this concept within himself.
How conscious The Corwood Representative is of this is debatable, but it can all be an acquired taste that becomes almost.....I said 'Almost'.....an addiction. He IS the Gilbert and George of Outsider Music.
And here he is,one hundred years on from the Bier Keller Putsch, almost to the day, and The Ginger Bard of Outsider-dom Jams with the Viennese locals, putting together another two CD's worth of tuneless noise, augmented by Jandek's painful moan. Again recorded in 2009,along with nearly 100% of his most recent output, fueling more rumours of his secret demise. He's dead, and whoever he entrusted his estate to has a dumpster full of Jandekian free Improvisation  ready to release on the public, stretching into the next century.
The question is often asked as to would the Holocaust have happened if Hitler had been accepted as an Artist?.....well knowing quite a few artists, the answer is a deeply harrowing 'Yes'. Of course it would, this planet is covered with Human's,and they can't help but do stuff like this, Artist or Not?
Another Question has to be asked concerning the Ginger One,as to whether he would have become a mass shooter if idiots like us didn't read too much into his music, which he undoubtedly would have. So,in conclusion, nerds like us save lives.Start by telling your kids that their awful paintings are works of genius, and you may just have saved the lives of dozens of college students. Or better still make them get a job, or don't live in the USA........No Guns, no shootings.....a slogan of pure logic that yer average American Republican is totally blind to!?

Null & Fred Frith – "Null & Fred Frith" (Nux Organization – NUX-21) 1991

If you can't get Brian Eno for your cred cornering collaboration, the next best thing is to procure the ,cheaper, talents of one Fred Frith late of everyone's favourite post-prog art-rock combo, Henry Cow.He has a natural oblique strategies gland inside his front Brain, and can play at least one instrument,if desired;so no need for Eno's famed pack of cards to ever leave the draw.....unless David Bowie wanted them of course...what David wants David gets.....or steals.
Frith brings a more subtle approach to the noise, and side A sounds more like yer Free Improvisation kind of Noise, a noise with nuances if you will?
Woah...side B goes unexpectedly subtle, verging on the Eno's ambient period, with its floaty textures and Atmospheric noodlings.
Who needs Eno anyway?

Jandek – "Manhattan Thursday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0855) 2022

Another recording from 2009? Sterling and downtown scratch band sound like no-one knows how to play any instrument, and they're playing four different tunes at the same time but in different time signatures......That's Jandek in Manhattan,a place where nobody is allowed to say that Jandek is Shit. It's a challenge for the Downtown NYC muso's to improvise with someone who has not the slightest clue or interest in conventional tunings, musical notes, or technique. The downtown elite would give their eye-teeth to be this close to the year zero of music without their muse, the Corwood representative.
There are some awful moments when the Saxophonist begins to sound like a Blue Note session player from 1959,but thankfully this is brief. If you wanna listen to some self-identifying sophisticate's standard Jazz boredom, then go and worship the Bird in your own privacy.
We do get treated to more of Jandek's improv sixth form poetry, which makes up for the crowd pleasing moody be-bop somewhat.....I can almost see audience members nodding their heads, eyes closed digging the poetry like a beatnik coming out of a vegetative state. Coooool.
It also appears that Jandek don't do encores, even to persistent trendies applauding post-ironically to tempt the ghostly face of the representative back into the limelight.Even the sarcastic screams of a very misguided lower Manhattan hipsterette could not,and correctly Not, move the Rep to cede to the audience's fake demands.....coooooler.

Steve Beresford /Jon Rose / John Russell / Tony Wren – "Luton - Center Of The Universe" (Fringe Benefit Records – FBR 33) 1981

Having proved that there is a super-massive Black Hole at the center of our galaxy;Top scientists are yet to prove that Luton is at the center of anything, let alone the universe. As one of the most drab and uninspiring of London satellite towns, and home to one of thee worst football grounds ,possibly in the entire universe, the place would be greatly improved by being swallowed by a black hole and compacted to infinite density.
Although ,Luton was indeed close to the center of the improvising universe for at least two evenings early in 1981,when Steve Beresford and chums hit town, witnessed by what sounded like, going on the sparse applause, approximately 8 and a half punters, but no dog.....he didn't turn up! Or, better still a room full of paying customers, including one dog, who sat in silence,or left, during the performance, leaving the eight and a half strong Luton intelligentsia to applaud wildly in a largely empty room. This C-60 being the only evidence that this actually happened.....or did it?
These free improvisations have all those essential monkey's tea party qualities that would normally empty any size room of consenting adults within minutes and provoke many a ruddy faced jingoist into enraged foot stamping threats of violence. In which case I could't recommend it more.

Steve Beresford /Tristan Honsinger/ Toshinori Kondo / David Toop – "Imitation Of Life" (Y Records – Y 13) 1982

Having been seen doing the donkey-work for the Slits it was inevitable that Steve Beresford would get some product on trendy Pop group connected label, 'Y Records' ,as owned by Pop Group/Slits manager Dick O'Dell. So, Steve and his weird London chums got to do a couple of Lp's of their spontaneous scraping toy instrument and Tuba madness to sit alongside the funky fayre of the Bristolian Illuminati. Unlike label mates Maximum Joy*,Poop Groop, and other suspected Trustfund surfers, there is not one ounce of 'Funk' on Steve's record ,which hardly even has a time signature. It does have however, four very unfashionable people living in four different but related worlds, playing different tunes at the same time.

NB...Maximum Joy threw a mardy*......

*Mardy Arse :(noun) INFORMAL•NORTHERN ENGLISH
a sulky, petulant, or grumpy person.

......about being featured on Die or DIY?,and demanded...yes...demanded(?)  that their work.....did they say 'Work'?,apparently ,yes?...be withdrawn.....so you can't find these suspected suburban  middle  class George Clintons haunting these pages no more.;...but you can, ironically, on YouTube, work that one out......or as Steve Beresford calls it, YouTuba! (ha ha ha)....i suspect it was Dick 0'Dell (who produced this funnily enuff!) wot done it,not the groop.Groops don't do shit like that, unless you're the remaining members of Throbbing Gristle,Cabaret Voltaire,Whitehouse,or Zoviet France?...There seems to be a theme there.....only Industrial Bands are wankers it seems.
Anyway fuck the fuckers and their honkyfied white mans funk, And how dare they share the same label as Sun Ra....yeah I'm a trendy too?Didn't you know?...how Dicky dingleberry O'Dell wangled that I dunno?
Well, at least Y Records have an ex-XTC member (barry) on their rostrum;...yeah,post-punk super group Shriekback's entire fun-filled oeuvre appears there.......not listened much to it however,,only that first single about a spine being a bassline or sum'ting equally cool,as in cool with a capital 'I'...don't care. Nah!
But, Beresford can't do anything wrong to this proudly closed mind,I just don't like Trendy's who'll reveal their under arm portable jazz collection before you can say Thelonius Monk;arranged in chronological order of course;the More Jazz than You Nerd off......yeah yeah I know.....I'm "Pure Scum" etc etc....! for stealing the royalties from these hard working bands blah blah......I wish I could get royalties from work I did 40 years ago, or sell copies of the same work again and again...and incredibly, no-one complains???

Three & Four Pullovers - "Three & Four Pullovers (1975-8)" - (Emanem – 4038) 2000

What were you doing in 1975?
I was enduring the transition from primary education to take my place in the final year that Grammer Schools existed in the UK.Soon to be phased out because the Labour Government thought it 'Elitest', Unlike the government? Shirley Williams was the Secretary of Education, who had the non-elitest luck to have been evacuated to California in World war 2, along with her mate Elisabeth Taylor. They both tried out for the lead role in National Velvet.....and guess who won? That's right, Not Shirley Williams, who channeled this bitterness to fuck up intelligent kid's education prospects with her 'socialist' values, which, as far as i could see, were designed to keep the working class in their place,as factory and family fodder.
So in between being beaten up at school by the older kids,....us being the last years intake....we would never get the chance to beat up the younger kids,so we were doomed to be the youngest kids for the entire 5 years.
Then, carrying the stigma of being a Grammar school kid on a council estate, I was beaten up on my home turf too.For some reason being classed as intelligent means that you are 'Posh' according to my peers, who named me "Posh Cunt" before the kicks tained in....that's elitism for you alright.Pablo Picasso never got called an Asshole...but we did.
In between kickings, I spent my time listening to such unadulterated rubbish as Queen, Status Quo,Dr Feelgood,Thin Lizzy, The Sweet,The Glitter Band....etc....you get the picture? With pretensions towards Prog.
Meanwhile Steve Beresford and his London Music Collective chums Nigel Coombes and Roger Smith were making ,such crazed improvised tomfoolery as "Three Pullovers".....(later expanded to "Four Pullovers" whenever Terry Day bothered to turn up).
What would have been rather splendid, was if Thin Lizzy played a version of "The Sea Of Mice" by Three Pullovers as an encore at one of their proto-NWOBHM gigs, even though Sweet were far more metal than them. The mid-size college arena would have emptied in record time...well, either that or a Riot.
The Glitter Band are excused,as their Guitar sound was probably the most avant garde statement in the whole Glam scene. Dr Feelgood were living art however, but The Quo could have at least finished their 'Blue For You' album with some Free Improv to totally piss off their denim clad, and 100% male audience.....this could have been lauded as another one of those, sadly stupid "Punk before Punk" moments. The fantasy of the late Rick Parfitt whipping out the toy glockenspiel would have made for a most tantalizing prospect.
Its the Toys that make the Noise.

Alterations – "Up Your Sleeve" (Quartz Publications – !QUARTZ 006) 1980

I said i'd post this in response to a request....which is handy so we can move on from the Synth-Punk thread one was in danger of weaving.Like an escape from Rapunzel's tower,.....did I tell you all about the nutjob in Leicester who built a replica of Rapunzel's Tower in his back garden,as a disguised entrance to his nuclear bunker;fully stocked with cans of Heinz Baked beans and Coke...original flavour of course! Oh How we laughed!?....until now,as he looks like the sane one,and we are in danger of getting irradiated by a nuclear Tidal wave. I didn't ask if the entrance to Rapunzels' Bunker was water tight?I assume it is.
Alas, fear Not, for the Russian threat is but mere fantasy,as there were several under water H-Bomb tests in the fifties, and lo and behold....no Tsunami. Just like all their other 'super-weapons.....they're running out of processing chips.Oh How we Laughed....hang on, haven't i said that before?

There's a Door and the Window reference in there, (I Feel Like a Doris),so this must be something to do with the London Musicians' Collective....which of course it is.It's got David Toop and Steve Beresford on it from the more lauded end of the LMC.
These chaps were taken seriously, but never by themselves.
If you're an open minded individual, as a rapidly decreasing percentage of the populous is year on year, this non-music is a pure expression of freedom, and anyone who doesn't like it can leave the room, which they would certainly do if encountered in the wrong environment. This is the kind of degenerate art that Putin will be issuing death sentences for in a few years,in the post nuclear wasteland that was once known as the Russian Federation.
The tune "Party Political" by this LMC sooper groop,is,lyrically, thee best most incisive dissection of the Political zeitgeist I have ever heard.....read these words as a manifesto for freedom :

"Don't Listen to Electrical Wholesalers,
Don't Listen to Greengrocers,
Reject their Ideology,
Don't Listen to Wholesale Greengrocers,
Don't Listen to TV Repair people.
REJECT THEM!"

Can't argue against all that...except that TV repair people no longer exist,as buying a new TV is far cheaper than getting it fixed. But all essentially true.

New 7th Music – "In A Dream" (ADN – ADN TAPES 19) 1985

Paul Kelday sometimes appeared on the cassettes made by his brother Phil's improv group 'New 7th Music', which involved doing what you felt like doing and calling it music basically. So don't expect going on a ambient cosmic journey into the farther reaches of the infinite pulsating brain at the center of the universe. This is the kind of music,in the loosest sense of the word, that our hominid ancestors would have played as soon as they picked up a dead beast's jawbone and beat each other to death with it.
As spontaneous music combo's go, these chaps aren't quite of the Derek Bailey,Hans Bennink,Evan Parker ,Scratch Orchestra standard, and more like a club of weirdo's who meet every Tuesday evening at the community centre ,tape recorder in hand......;but that's what I like about it. Ain't no criticism;we exist here to celebrate the Geek, and reject the mundane.....although a lot of the time the mundane is as equally alienating for the vast magnolia coloured armies of pointlessness,as it is mundane. When done correctly the most abominable of species can be used satisfactorily against your brainwashed oppressors.
Just listening to this could well get you euthanised in the new Russian empire that suddenly awoke recently....much to the 'joy' of 84% of the Russian public according to a recent Russian Government Poll which required contact details and ID before receiving an answer,as three tooled-up thugs wait for a signal near-by.

Jandek – "London Sunday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0847) 2021

This one's from 2008.......he is dead isn't he?......Recorded in front of a full house of London metrosexual trendies. If it wasn't enough to have the Representative on stage as your performing monkey, there's a bloke form the No-Neck Blues band on bass to make any avid Wire magazine subscriber cream his jeans....and believe me, it is always a he/his when it comes to stuff like this,no further pro-nouns required.
Whether it be making unprovoked warfare, unlistenable clap-trap that you are told is 'good'.or appreciating paintings by kneeling down on one knee and tweaking ones chin for twenty minutes, it's all done by the male of the species. Women are only now saving us non non-binary types from the joys and pitfalls of association Football, now we XY chromosome nerds need the fairer sex and their derivatives, to help save us from the joys and pitfalls of rubbish music passed off as works of genius...(something I am regularly guilty of?)....if that's successful, and this is the big one, maybe the onslaught of non-binary humans can save us from War?.......I doubt it very much, especially as its becoming increasingly clear that we maybe on the wrong end of a tactical Nuclear weapon or two very shortly thanks to the distinctly binary,as in split personality,self-elected president of the shithole that is Russia. He certainly has a split personality, and I hate both of them....i can sum up how i feel about this Phil Collins look-a-likey in the verses of one of England's finest poets:
Mr John Cooper-Clarke's "Twat":

Like a nightclub in the morning, you're the bitter end
Like a recently disinfected shithouse, you're clean round the bend
You give me the horrors
Too bad to be true
All of my tomorrows
Are lousy 'cause of you
You put the Shat in Shatter
Put the Pain in Spain
Your germs are splattered about
Your face is just a stain
You're certainly no raver, commonly known as a drag
Do us all a favor, here, wear this polythene bag
You're like a dose of scabies
I've got you under my skin
You make life a fairytale
Grimm!
People mention murder, the moment you arrive
I'd consider killing you if I thought you were alive
You've got this slippery quality
It makes me think of phlegm
And a dual personality
I hate both of them
You're bad breath, vamps disease, destruction, and decay
Please, please, please, please, take yourself away
Like a death a birthday party
You ruin all the fun
Like a sucked and spat-our Smartie
You're no use to anyone
Like the shadow of the guillotine
On a dead consumptive's face
Speaking as an outsider
What do you think of the human race?
You went to a progressive psychiatrist
He recommended suicide
Before scratching your bad name off his list
And pointing the way outside
You hear laughter breaking through, it makes you want to fart
You're heading for a breakdown
Better pull yourself apart
Your dirty name gets passed about when something goes amiss
Your attitudes are platitudes
Just make me wanna piss
What kind of creature bore you
Was it some kind of bat?
They can't find a good word for you
But I can
Twat!

The Jandek album is very good by the way,a return to old skool electric Jandek...but then again what do I know? I'm one of those Metrosexual Trendies who I referred to earlier, who would say that wouldn't he?
I also referred to myself in the third person, something I have yet to hear Vlad the Pute do,but if he did I'd hate all three of him.

Jandek – "Chapel Hill Sunday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0853) 2022

Yes, I tried living too, believe it or not,but then I started to listen to Jandek records again. This is time I'll never get back, and will probably rue this irrational decision to listen to all of Jandek's albums, on my death bed surrounded by any loved ones who will still have anything to do with me.
So,here's another hour and a half where i could have been making love to a beautiful woman...or their alternatives (I'm Hip ain't I?)...meaning one of the self-identified represented by the extra letters tagged onto the popular and ever lengthening acronym that begins with LGBTQ...etc......so maybe i wasn't wasting my ever decreasing allotted time in this reality after all?
Would I sooner be making sweet luuurve to a beautiful lady, rather than listen to endless Jandek?....well....er....yes please. I think Jandek would too, although, his lady, slash, victim, would undoubtedly be of the Prince Andrew variety.
This one was recorded in 2009,so Jandek may still indeed be dead? Which is a pity, because we could have tried threatening Putin with endless Jandek pumped into the Kremlin. Vlad has promised us "Something We Have Never Seen Before",but we westerners have got something He has never heard Before, and far more lethal than the nukes he was alluding to.By the time this double CD has finished its first few tracks Putin would be grovelling to be sent to the Hague, and plead guilty of waging an illegal war of aggression.
I suppose i should turn my attentions away from imminent nuclear annihilation, and turn to something far more important....the music....if indeed ,music this may be?
"You wanted my Body" whine's the Corwood rep in the opening improvisation, cosily entitled "I tried Living". I can also now go on record and say in all honesty, that I have NEVER wanted Jandek's body.
A trio of new buddies make stuff up around Jandek's guitar abuse, and I have to say I have heard better. The drummer in particular seems to be struggling to come up with anything we haven't heard a thousand times before, treading water in an 'i've got a Free Jazz collection' kind of way.Incredibly, the guitar player seems to be the one with the most clue here.....wait a minute, Thats Jandek innit?....blimey he's found musicians who are almost as bad as himself. Now that's something to be applauded.....we came here to hear the ginger mist in person, not the pale one and a bunch of trendy jazzers who would be better off on ECM records than Corwood, which is what we usually get for these live performances since 2004-ish.They're not quite there but,at least this selection approaches somewhere near the nebulous standard required to make a cohesively uncohesive Jandekian outing into the outside.

1.I Tried Living 29:52
2. Broken Sky 12:49
3.I Think I'm Unstable 9:03
4.The Slide 15:14

Jandek – "Columbus Friday" (Corwood Industries – CORWOOD 0850) 2021

As we rapidly approach Jandek's 76th birthday, his release schedule seems to be increasing;and somehow, they all sound very different;although there are those who would say that they all sound the same. Basically, Jandek sounds like whoever he's playing with these days, unlike 20th century Jandek, which sounded like Jandek, only Jandek and absolutely no-one else.
This one, has some experienced Jazzers, and experimental composers in tow to back up the Corwood rep's doomy synth drones and moaning poetry, for another 90 minutes of living purgatory spread over two CD's.
This is he in a Jandek does an american Throbbing Gristle tribute mode; he even gets a bit saucy at one point in 'Any man';which seems to describe the kind of stuff Sterling allegedly gets up to in his spare time when out of character....so I've heard on the outsider music grapevine, which admittedly produces very withered fruit.
If by some inexplicable oversight, you don't know what Jandek sounds like,I would recommend delving into his vast back-catalogue at random,by choosing one album from 1978-2000,and another from his vast 21st century array of live recordings.....That's what he sounds like, and it should empty a room or upset someone within 30 seconds of the first track,or you've picked the wrong one.
I Played Columbus Friday in its entirety whilst i worked at my calling to make silly mice out of junk for the world to be amused by.The result of this exposure to Jandek, was a complaint from a customer whom could one day come to define the neo-word 'Snowflake';upon opening the package she burst into to tears allegedly, and said that she has never felt more insulted! It looked ok to me when i made it,so maybe it was the malevolent influence of the Jandek wot dunnit? The misery that swirled around my workshop like a malignant fog evading the fume extractor and danced a waltz with my depression. This somehow impregnated the form of the metal mouse and created a grim vision of the futility of existence that only severe religious brainwashing can camouflage. It was either the black magic of Sterling Smith's gloomy meanderings or the fact that the mouse was flipping the bird in the world's general direction that was to blame?......I thought it was very mildly amusing anyway?.....as is, I have to say,a Jandek record. Some people should just lighten up a bit and embrace the awful truth with a jaunty laugh.....except The Corwood Representative of course.I wouldn't know how to cope with a Jandek comedy record, but I'm sure he's thinking of doing one soon,or saving it for one of the early flood of posthumous releases he almost certainly has planned.

Feminist Improvising Group – "Feminist Improvising Group" (Self-released C-60) 1979

Everybody loves a feminist don't they?
So the challenge is how to alienate as many potential supporters of the cause as possible. This is normally achieved by letting Germain Greer talk uninterrupted for about twenty minutes. Another effective method of closing ears and minds to the feminist cause is by forming a free improvisation group and attaching the word feminist to the collective moniker.
Apparently Cumbrian folk singer Frankie Armstrong was once connected to this ensemble formed by Henry Cow bassoonist Lindsay Cooper, although not long enough to damage her virtually already non-existent career. This stuff could clear a room of Feminists in as long as it takes to burn a couple of peek-a-boo bra's. There will inevitably be a few blokes left to endure the noise, so they can brown nose the ladies with some opposite gender 'support', read that as the opposite genders hidden agenda,as most chaps think this Trojan horse approach will secure entry into the ladies under garments...think again chaps....ok yes it does work sometimes ...statistically.
At least they don't sing lyrics about all men being potential rapists....we already know that, and don't want to be preached at thanks.....we know, and it's to the male sex's credit that so few of them actually rape anyone at all...including other men.Never mentioned is that men are more frequently the victim of male violence than the fairer sex...world war 2 being the zenith of this genocide. Not helped in the previous war by thee so-called Fairer sex doling out white feathers to male pacifists shaming them as cowards.
Is there a Black Lives Matter Improvising group in formation?...if there is they are too late,as most of sixties free jazz beat everyone to it.

Otomo Yoshihide – "Guitar Solo Live 1" (Amoebic – AMO-CDR.1) 1999

Ay Up, Ornette Coleman gets name-dropped!? This must be too intelligent for us?
Sampler toting Ground Zero free jazzer and turntablist Otomo Yoshide, shows us what he can and can't do on the ol' six string.
As for the 'Cover Version',he could have been covering anything as far as i can hear? Did I hear a hint of Aqua's smash-hit about Barbie partying......well possibly, but maybe it's more Klaus Barbie partying rather than the top selling gender stereotyping tool for square moms and pops everywhere.
Otomo suitably makes his guitar,"recorded in 'F'" it says here, scream for help as he strangles its slender neck with various devices rattling its vertebrae like a ligature garroting the neck of proper music;Derek Bailey in a bad mood style. So maybe i'll seem like a clever sod too, record my vacuum cleaner and call it a cover of Albert Ayler's 'Bells'.
This was limited to 50 copies it reckons,of which this isn't one. It's impossible to have limited editions these days Otomo, didn't you know that?
Now to get back to my current Dark Folk obsession and weep myself to sleep during my ongoing existential crisis like the snowflake i wanna be. In fact i may do an Otomo Yoshihide version of Sandy Denny's "Late November" later on before I open the first can of strong continental lager and kill myself.
