In Slaughter Natives – "In Slaughter Natives" (Cold Meat Industry – CMI-04) 1988

Some bright spark calls this stuff ,and I quote,"Symphonic Industrial",but,Having never knowingly heard anything by Nine Inch Nails, this cassette ,released on the aforementioned 'Cold Meat Industries' label around the advent of Hard Electronic Industrial Rock,with a Gothic Wagnerian slant, is what I guess it sounded like;but like the argument put forward by many an envious American rock musician that only Americans can understand Rock'n'Roll.....i'm thinking self-important Art slobs like the late David Thomas here....well.....the same can be argued that Americans can't understand dark European evil either. Especially when Wagner and Gothic Marching music is concerned. 

Just as Rock'n'Roll is basically modern american Folk Music, equally Dark East European Industrial like this is a form of modern folk music too.Replacing the Appalachians for the Urals. The ugly American could never produce anything like Laibach or even Throbbing Gristle within a million extinction events. 

The result is Nine Inch Nails, and The Ministry,which i figure are in fact just Heavy Metal again......purely a British form of modern Industrial urban Folk,that gets constantly fucked up by our American Cousins. I'm talking Hair Metal here.

You just can't make traditional dark Industrial Metal from the urban wastelands of Birmingham,UK, in California,or replicate the claustrophobiz in the wide open spaces of  Texas with a Van Halen guitar solo.

Having said that, "In Slaughter Natives" are apparently Swedish ,which is just another word for German,or, Norman,or even Viking for that matter. These Scandinavians can do Metal extremely authentically. Which also includes, Thudding Hard Electronics such as this, which feels like one is receiving a damn good, and well deserved kicking if one turns it up a notch.

Dark Electronic God Gary Numan is back at number one ,so i am informed,by copying Nine Inch Nails apparently?......Please let me never hear this potential atrocity ever!

Lille Roger – "For Life" (Konduktör Rekords – KR12) 1985

From the land that gave us ABBA,Volvo,IKEA,endless numbers of Punk bands that no-one'e ever heard of,neutrality in WW2,and virtually nothing else,we present 'Lille Roger' and his take on Old Skool industrial musick.

There'a song called Dachau (yawn),some German marching Band samples,tapes of American evangelists,a cover dedicated to a sadist, and lots of very attractive distorted electronic sounds.

Lille Roger, or Roger Karmanik, wisely avoids the most horrific subjects,by not mentioning the terminally awful rhyming dictionary rapists ABBA, whose only other connection to the old Skool is that Chris Carter of TG had an ABBA badge proudly, or Ironically(ha ha ha) pinned on his pullover....the Irony of that acktion completely flys over my confused little bonce.

Apparently this is the chap that started the Cold Meat Industries label....er.....well done?

Refreshingly crammed with Industrial cliché, its the type of Industrial music I listen to while i'm preparing the Fondue for my lower middle class nouveau riche guests. 

That's interwesting moozick Jonny, it that the Thex Pistols?.....to which I always reply, "Yes"and proceed to drop my bread in the cheese.....but,of course this is actually how second album Pistols should have sounded, so i wasn't entirely lying.

Hi kids?

Well i'm sure that you are aware of what i've said in the past about ,so-called "industrial" Music,or Noise-ick,in which i claimed to be able to write an entire C-60 of Industrial music in approximately 30 minutes or less. As this cassette seems to be a C-30, i'm certain I could have made it in 29 minutes. Of course for the first tape one makes, there is always some necessary prep work to do to earn yer money,or lack of it, but subsequent works require little or no preparation at all.

The famous Artist claim that he's not a lazy fucker could always apply in that the artist is never idle,but thinking about his next masterpiece.

True, that the artwork takes longer to make than the music,but how hard is it to make an Industrial symphony that sounds exactly like the thousands of other Industrial symphony's that clog up the sewers of DIY world. 

However,if you are into such things,it does mean you can have a different Industrial tape at your dinner party for the rest of your life.This is usually why Melody exists, something totally absent from Industrial music-Zak.

Well never mind, this group's moniker caught my eye as having potential for one of my rants about current affairs.In this case the Genocide in Gaza, and the ruthless targeting of children's hospitals in Ukraine by A certain Russo-Nazi regime currently residing in Moscow.

The godparents of Industrial, Throbbing Gristle, never shied very far away from the theme of Child Killers,they even had a child-killer look alike in the group,one Genesis P. Orridge aka Neil Megson.

The Russian government, aka Mad Vlad, is full of them. They are nearly all subject to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal court. Their greatest crime, which will remain unpunished,would be the destruction of the Theatre in Mariupol, even though there were plenty of warning sign plastered all over and around the building, that the place was brimming with children.

But the fuckers destroyed it anyway,killing upwards of 600 innocent civilians and children.One of many crimes against humanity that Trumps buddy has to answer for.

Round about now, Trump, the Peace bringer, will have had his customary one on one meeting, behind closed doors, where Vlad reminds Donald of the pee-pee party he has on tape, and the weetabixed headed one will exit the room gushing with praise for the Madder one,and how he's done a beautiful deal giving away all of Ukraine's defenses;not unlike the eve of WW2.

Södra Bergens Balalaikor – "Södra Bergens Balalaikor" (MNW – MNW 19 P) 1971

Apart from austere joyless classical music, Dictators like their peasant classes to entertain themselves by doing traditional dances to horrific localized folk like this .Woe betide any smart alek liberal who whips out an electric organ or a new fangled digital accordian to sing songs in any foreign tongue,that doesn't exude love of country or praise the family unit. Out would be wheeled the portable guillotine so beloved of the Nazi's, for public execution parties.....complete with doomy classical and creepy Folk orchestra's in a jolly up as the offenders severed head is placed on the 'peoples' spike at the entrance of the city.

Although this scenario doesn't generally happen in peace lovin' Sweden...yet....this creepy,but menacingly funny balalaika band was a pinko non profit orchestra that boasted up to 30 balaikas and a choir in it's line-up,probably with it's own Swedish communist party lyicist. You may not be surprised to know that this started as a music school project,hence the deliberately emphasised 'bum' notes,which I guess indicates a pretension towards humor.

You may also be surprised to know that Södra Bergens Balalaikor was part of the Swedish 'Progg Movement' as discussed on the last post. This explains those grubby socialist jibes that your's truly aimed in the orchestra's general direction. That being the politics of choice for the 'Progg' movement...and why not? It worked for Amon Duul...forward slash...Baader-Meinhof's Red Army Faction....fun fun fun? Being cajoled into these movements,must be like being shut in a Japanese prison sweat box with an insurance salesman.

Don't It just make you wanna kick seven shades of shite out of the nearest self-righteous soap boxing aspiring political activist ? Leave us alone you cunts....please?

If Vladimir 'The impailer' Putin ever got anywhere near your home town you better start paying attention to your local folk volunteers and get yerself a Balalaika.....acoustic of course; as well as genning up on austere classical music.A guaranteed ticket away from having electrodes attached to your genitalia,before being waterboarded in a bath of human shit. 

This was the kind of stuff one could find in the 'Bargain Bin' section of the famed Ultima Thule shop of Leicester....which I'm sure I've mentioned before? It might have been cheap(it isn't now) but this stuff could empty a room almost as quickly as an Amon Duul I LP.

There are certainly shades of the Portsmouth Sinfonia going on here, and maybe even The 3 Mustaphas 3 from the 70's and 80's respectively. However i'm not sure how serious SBB or these other similar projects were,which is also a pointer towards sophisticated comedy,as it is with the aforementioned examples in this paragraph.They could be the Swedish Incredible String Band for all I know.

Having heard quite a few of the other Swedish 'Progg' groups,I can now warn you,in a polite way, that they aren't very good at all.So don't go thinking that there's an Italian Prog type gold mine of wonderful progressive rock just waiting like low hanging fruit fro yourselves to gorge on until you're sick.....dunno about you but I'm sick already.I'm also quite pleased to say that this has nothing to do with Rock In Opposition,except maybe 60's student politics, which is supposedly what the recent train of thought was supposed to be about.

Various Artists – "Voice Of The Wolf" (Gump – GUMP 7) 1975

As mentioned by fountain of all knowledge prog, Ian......sorry, no other form of identification is available or needed.,as if in a biblical tense therein.

It has been rightly pointed out,in the comments section that the Swedish groups that tagged along with the Rock In Opposition lot were actually part of their own scene.Manifesting itself around the time that ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest; called "The Movement" or the much more specific "Progg" ,with two gee's.

The "Progg" "Movement" encompassed many different musical genres from Sound Poetry to Avant Prog
The political progg movement,mainly self-righteous communism with music, culminated around the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Stockholm after ABBAs victory in Brighton the year before. It was expressed that "music can't be a contest",everyone is equal kinds stuff, and an "alternative festival",rather like the Rock In opposition festival a couple of years later, was held in protest.

In theory 'Samla Mammas Manna' might well be the only group to have played both?.Due to this debate,and part 2 of the eurovision trivia trail, Sweden did not participate in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest,rather surprisingly....leaving the door open for The Brotherhood of Man to claim the top prize with the dreadful "Save Your Kisses For Me",and that little dance they did while we screamed in unfathomable pain!

It was as if these awful townie torturers were dancing at the impending death throes of the Progg movement that they, and many others,including myself,never knew existed.But, by the time Abba were divorcing each other,Progg killed itself in a sea of pinko posturing and the Swedish predilection towards hard rock and punk rock,being one of the few places that the Pistols actually played in.

The book of Ian, also mentioned an impossibly rare Swedish human called Carsten Regild....who had an impossibly rare single released on Gump Records i am told;but, No i don't have it, but this funny fella Carsten Regilid appears a couple of times on this Progg compilation from the year of ABBA's arrival...there is no suggestion that any member of ABBA was in a Progg band,as far as I an aware.

Carsten's contributions err more on the side of Sound Poetry,with an ironic early Rock leaning.This guy is Kerrrazzzy!

Most of my knowledge of Sweden during this mixed up epoch is of the Tone Poem, Sound Poetry,tape collage scene which was, and still is firmly sellotaped to their cultural identity. The Great Sten Hansen is the sound engineer on this to the mysterious Carsten Regilid's role as Producer.....as well as being valuable contributors.

So don't expect any lost Gentle Giant copyist numbers on here...these guys are really nutz!...but that's how we like it innit?

Samla Mammas Manna - "Måltid" (Silence – SRS 4621) 1973

In a glaring attempt to pick something not Obvious from the groups who performed at the genre defining original Rock In Opposition Featival back in yee olde days of 1978. I give you a Swedish band who ,(A), aren't Abba, (B) contain no future ABBA collaborators or Members, and thirdly, (C), are certainly NOT Swedish Punk,or on a Killed by death compilation. All this blatant non-alignment with Swedish musical cliché,without even mentioning IKEA or Volvo, suggests a record of great promise.

As it turns out ,they are basically Canterbury Prog emulators with some rather annoying vocal bits that suggest a.....sharp intake of breath!.....sense of humour!? Prog Humour is never something to boast about,and is even more frown defining than even Psychedelic Humour. Comedy music is seldom recommended,99% of which ends in disaster and polite embarrassed applause. Especially if you're making serious music,and add a spot of  funny stuff to show that you don't take yourselves seriously,when you most obviously do.

I spotted this cover from afar,and thought it was a unhalfbricking style photograph of a pair of elderly types having a Gravelax sandwich....disappointingly it turns out to be a semi-photorealist painting,that, again may suggest prog humour!?

I'll tell you what definitely is NOT funny about this record,is that god-awful high-pitched, falsetto i think they call it, vocalizing.

You know that feeling you get when you trip over a crack in the paving,or are passed by an over revving Moped in first gear; that you momentarily wanna kill some fucker!?....that's how i feel when these Swedes from Canterbury make their silly hi-pitched noises.

Other than that it's okay.

It would be five years before the inauguration of Rock In Opppostion,so maybe they sacked off the vocals by 1978?

I've never been brave enough to try and find out.

I understand that the Turkish objections to Sweden joining NATO were based around having heard this record. Now NATO are considering using it to counteract all that state approved prog on the old Soviet official record label that Putin has been secretly hoarding alongside the Novichok;.. Melodija(its spelt several different ways smartarses!).

Anti Cimex – "Victims Of A Bombraid / Raped Ass" (Distortion Records - DISTLP9) 1994/1983)

More Swedish D-Beat from Anti Cimex,who basically played the same track,and wore the same clothes, for the ten years or so of their existence. They sounded like Discharge, looked like Discharge,wrote about the same things...or rather 'Thing' singular(i.e. Nuclear annihilation),as Discharge, and even supported Discharge whenever their heroes played in Sweden. Slightly more conventional, and far less brutal than Swedish faves The Shitlickers, but its still fun to listen,open mouthed, and wonder how groups like this ever came into being,and how they lasted for longer than one demo tape?

That Stoke-On-Trent look travelled quickly to our Scandinavian chums just across the North Sea.The American Hardcore dressed down image firmly rejected for that popular Northern English more Sid than Sid caricature that still pollutes the highways and by-ways of many a town from Santiago to Vladivostok (travelling clockwise of course!) . These guys liked Discharge....a lot.And who can blame 'em.Rather magnificent was Discharge for an album and a half at least.....But...This Shitlickers EP,now expanded from the same sessions, wins my personal award for the best Hardcore and its derivatives vinyl EP ever self-released by a bunch of scandinavian spikey tops this side of the north sea oilfields.

Only five years between Wire's seminal "Pink Flag",the LP wot started this ultra reductionist approach, and this bizarre racket is what Punk Rock had evolved into by 1982.Times moved fast back in them daze. Now the renaissance has finished,nu-forms are stuck in the quicksands as is time.

Your author has come across a fan review which included a fine description of the...er... music(?), served rare on this black vinyl platter.I think this sums up the sound most adequately indeed:

"Fantastic EP that sounds like it was recorded in a rusty garbage can covered in piss"(Unknown critique).....one of course concurs somewhat.

If I had something on Vinyl-On-Demand to post I would, as Its founder seems to be claiming some moral High-ground over us with the 'Fucked Up Morals', for using photographs of someone else's cassette inserts,for which apparently gives the photographer ownership rights(if you don't want it copied don't put it on the internet!?); and for selling luxury products to Bourgeois record collectors,then complaing that listening to some lo-fi MP3's is robbing him of his thirty pieces of gold.Its an advert sonny-jim, and owning these astronomically expensive re-issues (not new stuff)is about the object/product/ and its posession not sharing poor copies of the music. Its like slagging off the John Peel Show for playing records of unknown musicians.Most of which, as is the case with this blog,are grateful that they aren't forgotten.In some cases it has revived their creativity, if not their career!If the public don't wanna pay for your products its because they don't think its value for money....its called market forces.If it don't sell its because no-one wants it.
I'm not supporting the artist apparently too!?
Simply by featuring the artist on a very popular blog one is supporting the artist, as most 99% of the  artists who have contacted me, have shown appreciation for this, i think that says something....the other 1% are in it for some other reason rather than the music. I've washed my hands again, so i'll begin....Sten Hanson is Sweden's answer to England's Bob Cobbing and France's Henri Chopin. A sound poet -- or text-sound composer as the Swedish like to call this art form....The Suedes, in fact all Scandinavians always seem to get everything right. But they have one advantage over us mongrels...they have the Genetics to allow everything to work.Where the rest of the world panics, they remain stoic. One prime example is how to cope with Corna Virus, by carrying on almost as normal.
As highlighted here on "La Destruction de Votre Code Génétique par Drogues, Toxines et Irradiation" ("The Destruction of Your Genetic Code by Drugs, Toxins and Irradiation"): a robotic-like Hanson runs through the alphabetic sequence of human DNA, but the cut-and-paste sequence becomes gradually corrupted. 
Even when their famed laid back DNA is under attack, they don't get carried away.

Keeping in mind that some of this stuff dates back to the dawn of recording technology, this is a highly interesting work of voice and electronics. At times simple tapeloops and other tape-technology which is now lost knowledge in the world of computers, but also at times synthesizers and other such apparatus. 
So,here we have a compilation spanning nearly 40 years of sten hanson’s text-sound oeuvres,from the modern home of Text-sound,and common sense, Scandinavia.

A fine opportunity to post the live Leather Nun Cassette on Industrial records,as a transition from Guitar Noise to another bout of Industrial nonsense.Here it is, in newly edited and remastered in 320 kps mp3 format.....oh I do spoil y'all????
Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle are Industrial Music, NOT, nine inch bleeding nails and shit like that!That's Adult Orientated Corporate Rock!The stuff your estate agent friend(why you should be friends with an estate agent I don't know?)puts on to appear 'cool' at his Fondue Soirée of an evening.
Somewhere between the two come the Leather Nun from Sweden. A rough and ready live set from 1980,Part one in the Scala cinema in London,the other in a place called Kungsgaten(?).
This tape is a fine argument in favour of Mono, as the superior sounding side is the live at the Music Palais in Kungsgatan, which was recorded in Mono. I've always been a believer that 'Rock' should be recorded monaurally, and this is the proof?
Fine sloppy, primitive Rock and Roll,performed for a crowd of Industrial fans/poseurs. The set includes at least two classics,,the almost three chord dirge that is “No Rule”, and the creeping monster ,”Slow Death”. Luckily we get two chances to hear these sub-rock masterpieces. 'Tis a pity that the Leather Nun were so shit later on, but, Hey-ho, it happens to most all of the groups in the pop fraternity doesn’t it? Doesn't change the fact that I wish I was there!
