Father Yod and the Spirit of '76 - "Anthology" (Higher Key records) 1973-74

DIY music ,i'll admit did not exist only between 1978 and 1983.......the hippies (spit!), were very adept at self producing their own releases too.My favourite of which was the various releases by cult leader Father Yod and his hippie followers.
Father Yod was really James Edward Baker ,born on July 4, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Baker earned the Silver Star as United States Marine in WWII and became an expert in Jujitsu. He moved to California to become a Hollywood stuntman and became influenced by the Nature Boys, a Los Angeles-based group of beatniks who lived a natural lifestyle, maintained vegetarian diets, and lived "according to Nature's Laws."Baker also studied philosophy, religion, and esoteric spiritual teachings, even becoming a Vedantic monk for a time. He later became a devoted follower of Yogi Bhajan, a Sikh spiritual leader and teacher of Kundalini Yoga.
In 1969, Baker founded the Source Restaurant in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles, on the Sunset Strip. The restaurant served organic vegetarian food, with such celebrity regulars as John Lennon, Julie Christie, and Marlon Brando.Founded in 1973 in the Los Angeles area, Ya Ho Wha 13, otherwise known Yahowha 13 is a psychedelic rock band fronted by Father Yod, spiritual leader of a religious cult/commune called the Source Family. Ya Ho Wha without the vowels and spaces reduces to YHWH, the tetragrammaton. The band recorded nine LPs full of their broken down and deranged psychedelic nonsense with tribal drums and crackling guitars, some of which were completely improvised jam sessions, others which contained more conventional rock songs.
Members of The Source Family, who lived in the Hollywood Hills in the early 1970s, had decided to fuse their musical 'talents' and 'spirituality' by forming an improvisational, psychedelic group. They began to press LPs in 1973, most of which were recorded after hours of meditation between 3:00-6:00 a.m. in a soundproofed garage that served as the musicians’ studio at the family's communal residence. All of the records with Father Yod’s participation were completely improvised, with no rehearsals or overdubs. Most of the albums were pressed in small runs of only 500 to 1000 copies on the Higher Key label. They were sold to the general public in Father Yod’s popular vegetarian Source Restaurant for $10 each. Though only nine LPs were produced and released, it is rumored that more than 65 albums were recorded by the group but were lost over the years.
The band changed members occasionally, morphing into various incarnations, from Father Yod and the Spirit of ’76 to Ya Ho Wha 13 to The Savage Sons of Ya Ho Wha, Yodship, and Fire Water Air; but the key players were always the same: (Djin Aquarian on guitar, Octavious Aquarian on drums, and Sunflower Aquarian on bass). Father Yod does not appear on all their album releases, but for those on which he participates, he handles lead vocals and percussion, via a kettle drum. Former pop star Sky Saxon of The Seeds had joined the Source Family in 1973 and occasionally appeared on the band's recordings.
Yod had established a council of 13 women and later sealed these women as his wives. On August 25, 1975, despite having no previous hang-gliding experience, YaHoWha used a hang glider to leap off a 1300-foot cliff on the eastern shore of Oahu.He crash-landed on the beach and died nine hours later. After three days of vigil, YaHoWha was cremated.

The albums from the first incarnation of the father yod nutters was, Father Yod And The Spirit Of 76(Ironic as he never made it beyond 1975?). The downloads of which can be found below.
BUT, I would recommend the Yo Ha Wha 13 records following this post, namely "Penetration- an aquarian symphony" and "I'm Gonna Take You Home", being the places to start. They being far superior and weirder than any of the others.
The Covers are interesting enough,"Kohoutek" is like a manson family slogan scrawled on a wall with a hollywood starlet's freshly spilled blood.
"Contraction" features Yod as creepy cross between(in)sanity claus and Chuck manson, surrounded by his blood crazed followers.
Then aptly following Contraction, we see a proud sexual predator/cult leader holding one of his progeny, on the cover of "Expansion".......quite sickening; but the music kicks ass in an "out there" kind of way.

Ya Ho Wha 13 ‎– "The Operetta" (Swordfish Records ‎– YHVHCD3) 1975

Not that all the original Ya Ho Wa 13 albums actually received a proper well distributed release at all, this collection of 'previously unreleased ' material from 1975 has been sourced from the archive of drugged up jams made at the Source Family home.
Contrary to his Yod-like status, this wasn't made after his death, but before Father Yod decided to jump off a cliff having never used a Hang-glider before. At least this ill-advised decision made hundreds of young hippie girls safe from his filthy wandering beatnik fingers.
Dunno about any Operetta, but it wouldn't surprise me if Yod,Jim Baker, thought very highly of his vocal attributes, but he certainly had some kind of God or Yod complex.
The music, is the same chaotic free acid rock jams, with Father's throaty cries and chants permeating the mess.It shouldn't do, but it works.

2 Untitled 14:47

Ya Ho Wa 13 ‎– "Ya Ho Wa 13" (Higher Key Records) 1974

Father Yod,inbetween bouts of 'sex sans orgasm' with teenage women, literally broke his back for the Source Family cause, aka the Father Yod cult.On August 25 1975, YaHoWha “left his body” nine hours after his debut hang-gliding flight straight into some rocks in Hawaii. They kept his body for three and a half days chanting Yod He Vau He,but ,unlike Jesus,he never rose again to walk the Earth. This is nothing unusual as Jesus, contrary to popular belief in some stone-age influenced time warps on this planet, didn't either!
This eponymously titled self-made album of source family acid rock jams is ,in some ways, the psychedelic equivalent of doing the same thing with music.Except that this still stalks our terrestrial domain looking for disciples to fuck up. If the bible was converted into a musical by a bunch of drugged up hippies fronted by a grey haired svengali and his hareem of teenage girlies, then maybe i would have bothered to have engaged with the story a bit more.As long as I didn't have anything to do with them of course.
This is what rock music should be like, that rare modicum of pure liquid madness mixed with raw incompetence and cluelessness, leading to the accidental treasures that appeared under the auspices of Ya Ho Wa 13.
Way better than the Grateful Dead, who are shite,in fact I'd say,in my opinion, that these nutjobs are best American 2nd wave Psych Band in existence.....probably?

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "To The Principles For The Children" ( Higher Key Records ‎– KEY 001) 1974

Sort of disturbing this; all those kids on the cover are probably Father Yod's, fathered under the normal cult conditions of cynical brainwashing techniques on dysfunctional and naive teenage women.Classic paedophile outfit on the rear sleeve photo, with the band worshipping a Yod on earth; disgusting.
That said, and although I can't listen to Gary Glitter anymore (The Glitter Band excepted), this insane spontaneous outsider DIY acid rock drivel is up there with evolution and the creation of the cosmos, as one of the greatest but inevitable accidents ever to stumble into existence.
And yes, he really did die in a bizarre hang gliding accident!!!!

Track Listing:
1. Side A (16:58)
2. Side B (10:37)

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "I'm Gonna Take You Home" (Higher Key Records ‎– HKR 3309) 1974

The UK had Jimmy Saville, but the USA had father Yod. At least his deflowering of children was done on some hippie commune, hid away on Hawaii, rather than on national Television!? Outsider DIY hippie monolith of a record.Note standard cult leader pose with teenage victim.......i think i'm gonna be sick.Displaying those pure hippie values of shagging as many girls as possible,as young as possible,in the name of "Free Love"; and grabbing as much money as possible from the idiots who think your ideas are 'Right On Maaaan'.
But i am prepared to put that aside, because this music is definitely "OUT THERE"! Contains some of the best acid guitar playing that transcends incompetence that you are ever likely to hear. This record is an audio record of a group of minds being flushed away. Are there really people like this, or are they just as manufactured as the kids from fame? What i wanna know is did the kids from Ya Ho Wha 13 go to a entertainment training facility to do this?..........i'm not totally sure but i probably think........not!
Operation Yewtree international anyone?

Ya Ho Wa 13 ‎– "Savage Sons Of Ya Ho Wa" (Higher Key Records ‎– 3306) 1974

Father Yod in all his generousity and grace, gave his 'sons' the chance to make their own record without his gong skills and throaty seal-like barking.
The result is this totally normal record, of the kind of normal Acid Rock songs you'd hear on the Banana Splits Show.
The cover is a good one however, with the Aquarius Brothers,Sunflower,Octavius,Djin and Rhythm, posing in front of the source cult mansion in Hollywood and Yod's roller, dressed as native American Jesus's. A Rolls Royce is thee must have accessory for any aspiring cult leader.
An interesting juxtapostion between capitalism, insulting indigenous peoples, and hyprocritical hippie bullshit philosophy.
The music definitely misses Yod's madness......just as I'd written him off as a talentless creep!?

Shit Spangled Banner – "No Dolby No DBX (Ass Run 1)" (Ecstatic Yod – actuel 3) 1994

'Eavy Metal never sounded good in Dobly',and that goes even more for Noisy Improv like the appropriately named Shit Spangled Banner.
I Had DBX on my first Portastudio, the otherwise fantastic Tascan Porta One, and it was shite, removing some of the music/noise as well as the Hiss.It made it all sound like it was trapped inside a wet cardboard box.
Its a bit of a No-Brainer to not use Noise Reduction on a noise recording.
So,wisely,Shit Spangled Banner not only doesn't use 'Dobly',they state this fact proudly on the inside of this facsimile of a  BYG/Actuel sleeve.
BYG/Actuel was the French Jazz imprint that saved the creative lives of the New Wave of Jazzers like Archie Shepp and buddies in the late 60's....if you didn't know already?
The other respectful tip of the hat goes to the Father Yod/Ya Ho Wa 13 references;who were an Hawaiian based free love cult ,who played improvised acid rock, recorded it, and put it onto vinyl, which remained largely unsold.
So I suppose with all that hinting at non-conformist form of modern music,Shit Spangled Banner are gonna improvise the shit out of you until that imaginary alternative Flag self-combusts.
Apparently, Thurston Moore runs this label!?....but don't let that morsel of truth put you off you silly sod....this stuff is certainly my cup of tea, with the Tea Bag left in please.
Sorry for the Spinal Tap references,i'm a neurodivergent nerd, I can't help it!

The Max Factory – "Tudor City" -(Ecstatic Yod – actuel 5) 1995

The Max Factory is Alan Licht with or without friends.....that's what it says on the inner gatefold cover of another of that "Ass Run" series on that Father Yod label what we all dig so much.
So if you've ever been Licht by anyone called Alan, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't been Licht by someone called Alan, firstly 'Why Not?!',and secondly expect lots of spontaneous guitar noise akin to the sound of nails being scraped down an amplified chalk board.
If you have sensitive teeth, i advise caution when approaching this fine beast.

Ya Ho Wha 13 - "Penetration - An Aquarian Symphony" (Higher Key Records ‎– HKR3307) 1974

Peace ,Love, and Understanding?... my Arse!.....All those hippies were about was how to invent some pseudo-philosophy that will seduce young women into bed......and what happens then is pretty well summed up in the title of this lp.
As awful as these misguided sexual predators and their victims were, they made grade "A" aural lunacy that is a shear delight......no-one is allllll bad. This record should have made history as the first music to be sectioned.
The Gong sounds alone on "Ho" should be presented with an award for the best aural experience since Godzilla screeched his(or was it a her?) first gut scraping vowel sound."Yodzilla" seems an appropriate noun for that gong.
'Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony' was intended to be Ya Ho Wha 13's masterwork, acting as a Merkabah of sorts to elevate its listeners to a heightened state of consciousness - & I must say, it does the trick!
Take your meds and revel in the Outsider DIY joy that is "Penetration - an aquarian symphony"! (That Title!!!....ugh!.....Shudder!!!!)

Fire, Water, Air (Ya Ho Wa 13 with Sky Saxon) ‎– "Golden Sunrise" ( Higher Key Records ‎– ELR-84510) 1977

Out of all the 'Cults' who thought they were musical genius's, Ya Ho Wa 13 were probably the most proficient.'Fire,Water,Air' were an offshoot fronted by garage psych legend Sky Saxon. They were so cut off from what was happening outside their world that it remained 1969 forever, even in 1977.Just like in my world it's permanently 1980, so who can blame them? Not me...in fact i actively encourage it,like a version of the Lost World, complete with dinosaurs,of the musical kind.
'Golden' is a much used adjective among the cult community, and the post Yod death Ya Ho Wa 13 weren't gonna be left out.
Their guru, Father Yod, may have died a couple of years earlier in a bizarre hang gliding accident in Hawaii, but his influence was still looming large amongst his devotees. One of whom was Sky Saxon late of The seeds, who was a long term hanger-on at his Yodship's commune.
If you want more info on the Yodster and his young hippie chums, as well as more Ya Ho Wa 13 albums, then CLICK HERE!
There are more posthumous albums to exhume in the following posts also, so don't be afraid.

CAMBRIC MILL - "Not For Cult Approval/The Rehearsal Tapes" (Pumf Records PUMF 812) 2020

Everyone likes a cult, especially the music of Cults.Of course I refer to the very Reverend and very dead, Jim Jones,Chuck Manson, and who can forget the great, and gratefully very dead, rockin' Jesus, David Koresh...among other manipulative sex abusers too numerous to mention.....ok I missed out the weirdest of the lot Sai Baba and I'm sorry.
In fact the main reason for joining a doomsday cult,or the new disciples of the latest incarnation of Jesus,is to make wacked out music with some genuine five star dysfunctional loony Toons. I'm sure that was at the top of the list for randy beatnik Father Yod,who used unhinged psychedelia to charm teenage ladies into their gods bed.......and i don't mean just to sleep either. The randy old cunt in a randy old cult is what he was, before crashing to the ground in a bizarre hang-gliding accident. He thought he was invincible and could fly....don't blame it on drugs pleeeeze,he was just a deluded twat with a Messiah complex is all.
No hang-gliders involved in the Cambric Mill story however, unless you can attribute the prefix 'bizarre' to over-indulgence in a cult member's Homebrew washed down with lashings of British pharmaceutical paracetamol. A very British mass suicide.......has anyone written a TV series called that? If not, then someone should. I guess the Homebrew was student strength British bitter ,and not the Jim Jones preferred communal brew of pure cyanide. I guess Jim didn't know that Paracetamol was so cheap at Wilko's, formerly Wilkinson's,and not anything to do with the actual god that is Wilko Johnson? You Europeans haven't lived until you visited Wilko's pharmaceutical section.....mix and match is recommended or they won't serve you at the tills.
Basically,as if you didn't know ,Cambric Mill are the Spinal Tap of Folky Industrial power Electronics with a hint of dr hook, and a smidgen of John Denver from just before his light aircraft crashed....apparently Not into a Rocky Mountain High after all it seems.A livid John Denver fan corrected me on that point...rather tersely I may add.....over liberal use of the word 'Cunt' ...Tut tut tut!The world's full of nutters innit?
Nearly every band I've been in have been conceptual bands, and self-mythologizing is part and parcel of such projects, alongside not being able ,or bothered to learn how to play an instrument properly....fuck that! That's for Americans and similar types.
None of these people, along with John Stumpy Pepys,Joe Mama Besser, Mick Shrimpton of Spinal Tap,are actually dead, nor even spontaneously combusted, they're just having a laugh and playing some nutty music, not unlike the stuff that came out of Father Yods gaff in Hawaii...except this comes from somewhere around gloomy old Blackpool......I am guessing that living members of The Ceramic Hobs could well be responsible for this lovely package on the prolific, and suitably cheap, Pumf Records.
The story/myth is that the band who spent so long rehearsing their new sound which they called 'Industrial Folk Power Electronics" - before tragically committing group suicide in a homebrew death cult ritual prior to even playing a gig!?....also sounds like all the bands I've been in too!?
For many years, there were rumors (pretends ones) circulating around that there were rehearsal tapes of a never heard group called Cambric Mill, and finally pStan Batcow of Pumf Records somehow got his hands on the original recordings, probably because he made them, and released it on CD.This is that CD....but I ain't allowed to share it 'cus it's for sale at Pumpf Records for the nominal transfer of a single lady Godiva into pStan's back bin. If it was on Vinyl On Demand or cash driven collector bastards like that,I would certainly share it....even in FLAC!....but, No, Pumf Records and their contributors are the real DIY thing, and get Zchivago's Seal of approval....I dunno where he is,probably off in the oceans chomping down some fish....the Seal not your author you berk! I call him 'Barky' by the way if you're interested.....

Now where's me Home Brew?

Damião Experiença ‎– "Planeta Lamma" (Self-Released ‎– 19939000) 1971

Every country has their own Jandek don't they?......if not, then they should.
To keep with our short Brazilian theme, here's Brazil's Jandek ; Damião Ferreira Da Cruz aka Damião Experiença.
He's a sort of Rasta Moondog, crossed with Father Yod, Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk, and, of course, Jandek.
Except, whereas the famed Corwood representative sounds mentally disturbed, Mr Damião Ferreira Da Cruz just sounds.....er......Mental........but, in a joyful way. The kind of mentalist that gave the psychiatric Hospital the jolly moniker "The Happy House".
The actual reality is that all psychiatric units are full of 'Jandeks' and not happy rasta types.
Naturally, like the aforementioned musical references, this stuff is an acquired taste, and i must admit running through this thing to edit it, I almost gave up breathing just to free myself from it. This is always a recommendation, because most of my favourite artists had the same effect on me the first time I heard them.
To give this a label is an insult, but i'll try to use something other than 'Other'; so lets go for Outsider Psychedelic Folk?

Zchivago's Challenge:

Who was/is your country's Jandek?

A Witness - "Peel Sessions 1985-88" (a Die or DIY? Compilation)

'A Witness' was another of that batch of unclassifiable mid-eighties bands from the north of England that fitted very comfortably on Ron Johnson Records. Again we have a vague Captain Beefheart influence filtered through the very unique landscape of post-punk northern Britain.
The necessitated use of a drum machine ,after the original drummer left, ironed out a lot of the wavering time signatures, but later in their career they managed to secure the services of one Alan Brown from excellent bIG fLAME to fill in on drums. This was an undoubted improvement.
They managed four Peel sessions before the untimely death of atonal guitarist Rick Aitkin via, among all things that cause death in the annals of Rock'n'Roll, a mountaineering accident!? Not something you'd find Keith Moon or Jimi Hendrix doing, too dangerous.Father Yod of Ya-Ho-Wha 13 managed to die in a bizarre hang-gliding accident, thats about as close as we can get to mountaineering in Rock, or on Rock, or in this case Off Rock,as in 'Falling Off'.

Storm Bugs – " Metamorphose " (L’Invitation au Suicide INV 0100) 1981

Storm Bugs were formed by Philip Sanderson and Steven Ball in 1978 and have been described as “the spiritual forefathers to Oval”, grandaddies of the “Glitch”. That’s pushing it a bit, but what they were good at is sounding like a shortwave broadcast from some aliens from an ignored planet’s extra-terrestrial insane asylum. The broadcast is, of course, very badly tuned in on your pre-digital receiver.
The cover of this single looks like a propaganda poster asking for contributions for a revamped nazi party, which explains why ‘Tin’ sounds rather like a fine example of Forced Labour Disco; a genre that is inexplicably absent from the racks of all those closed down record shops out there.
‘Car Situations’ , with its ‘Take a child on Holiday’ refrain, sadly suggests a mentally malfunctioning male with a Pete Townsend style ‘curiosity’; although I doubt that is what the composition is about. You have to be careful about these things these days. No such bother in 1980, where it was perfectly acceptable to make such dodgy references. Listen to several John Peel shows and you can hear the venerable old sod, making many references to school girls, and openly bragging about having sex with under age girlfriends in the sixties. This is statutory rape, is it not? This is a fine example why Hippie culture was the twentieth centuries western version of the Taliban.
All this has nothing to do with the great Storm Bugs however, and I apologise for digressing, but I can’t stand those Hippie-crites. Long haired smelly sex abusers. For evidence check out hippie DIY’ers/cult Father Yod and Ya Ho Wha 13 to come later on this blog.

Steven Ball enlightens us school drop outs further:

" To clarify, the cover of the single (yes it is a Hitler youth member), was imposed on it by the label. We were utterly disgusted with it when it arrived and discarded as many as we could, replacing with them with a plain sleeve. As the sound of Tin might suggest (it is also a melodic rockabilly inflected pop song, with acoustic guitar), we were trying to make something a world away from the tired death camp imagery and fascist flirtations that proliferated at that time, promulgated by many of the contemporary post-punkers (TG being the worst offenders), so we were doubly disappointed to be unwillingly thrown back into the fray. Unfortunately the image seems to have resurfaced in the internet age. "Take a child on holiday" is a reference to Nabokov's 'Lolita' to be taken as literary, rather than literally. Most of the lyric was written using a cut-up technique, from various sources."

Various ‎Artists – "Psych-Out (OST)" (Sidewalk ‎– ST-5913) 1968

The Psychedelic Brat Pack, Jack Nicholson,Bruce Dern,Peter Fonda, and Dennis Hopper, were never out of work between 1966 and 1970.There was seldom a biker movie or a Psychsploitation flick that at least one of them wasn't in.
This one had Nicholson and Dern in it, fleshing out the bits in between the party scenes and the largely faked Psych groups. One of them, Boenzee Cryque was responsible for the greatest ever inverted and backwards version of 'Purple Haze' ever made(no royalties for James from this album methinks?).....if there was a second one I need to hear it before I die,or tye-dye!?
Amazingly, The Strawberry Alarm Clock were an actual group!? Which I find quite amazing!?....I just love their watered down sunshine Psych-pop immensley.
The Seeds were slightly past their sell-by date by 1968....very 1965 garage punk. But Sky Saxon ,singer of the Seeds) did manage to go and join the Father Yod Family in Hawaii a few years after this, and helped make some genuinely Crazed music.
By 1968,the kids were tiring of songs about colours, flowers and love,so started going back to the boring basics and dressed like 'The Band'.
By the time this movie came out it was becoming 'soooo yesterday maaaaan',but fuck that, I love it.
