Napalm Death ‎– "The Peel Sessions" (Strange Fruit ‎– SFPDCD049) 1987/88

Twenty Five 'songs' in 20 minutes?!Now, that's either value for money or a total rip off!
In my humble opinion it's excellent value for money, and the only Napalm Death/Grindcore record you would ever need. This genre can't get any better than this? A bit like Hip-Hop never got better than Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back". After these two records, they, and their shameless imitators should have just called it a day. These two, seemingly polar opposite groups are black and white versions of the same thing I guess?

Tracklist:

Session 1 - 13/09/1987:

1 The Kill / Prison Without Walls / Dead Pt.1 0:55
2 Deceiver / Lucid Fairytale / In Extremis 1:45
3 Blind To The Truth / Negative Approach / Common Enemy 1:05
4 Obstinate Direction / Life / You Suffer Pt.2 1:55

Session 2 - 08/03/1988:
5 Multi-National Corporations / Instinct Of Survival / Stigmatised / Parasites 4:10
6 Moral Crusade / Worlds Apart / M.A.D. 3:35
7 Divine Death / C.S. / Control 3:20
8 Walls / Raging In Hell / Conform Or Die / S.O.B. 3:15

Love those 2 sessions - all I need from ND! Whenever I feel frustatred, full of anger or bursting of hatred and rage, this is the album to go for and feel fresh afterwards - ararararararargrrrrrrrrrrr! For PE - there's a lot of brain fuck going on, the music's kicking butt and the sampladelica is only better in the hands of guys like John Oswald or Negativland.

I will listen to this with great eagerness. I have most of the ND back catalogue and as far as I know they are still going.

The craic was at my secondary school in about '91 that they had written the shortest ever recorded original song, we suffer /you suffer (but why?) something like that. Maybe it was just teenage boys trying to be cool. I dug it though and although no fanatic about them, they've always been one of those bands I thought I should listen to more than what I did. Just never got around to it. Anyways had no idea they did a peel session or two. Good on them, and good on JP. Makes me miss the legend even more now. Radio has gone to hell these days. John Peel and sometimes Steve Lamacq where the only 2 dj's I ever listened too. F*ck I miss JP. I hope at least you're around for a long time to come Jonny. All the best, many many thanks.

Yes napalm Death are still going...one of those bands with Zero original line-up members still in the band. In fact since about 1990 they haven't had any original members in the group....thats some kinda record, to go with their shortest song of all time record, as entered in the Guinness book of records.
What constitutes a 'Song' is another matter...for me it has to have more structure than just a combined growl/grunt for one second!...thats a sound-byte not a song.
I actually had a pint with Napalm death after their gig at Leicester Uni. They all seemed nice chaps, and i got an autograph from Shane Emburey which said "Salamandeeeerrrrr Grrrrriiiiiind!...Shane".I said it was for my girlfriend.

After listening to their first albums "Scum" and "From Enslavement to Obliteration", these early Peel Sessions are pure revelation - they sounds SO MUCH BETTER than their regular albums, it's a shame they never had engineers like the guys at BBC, you actually can HEAR how good they are, and the energy is much more stingy and not as muddy as their Earache LP's. My opinion and my ears :)

P. S.: I was curious how your rip sounds compared to the CD I have, so I downloaded yours and listened. I have to say - the CD adds much more clarity and energy, also basswise. If you want, I can rip + up the CD, lossless or 320 or whatever.

This is the CD I have:

My CD version disintegrated, turning a funny colour...this was common in the late 80's for cd's made by MPO i think?
So by all mean if you can be bothered a fresh 320k rip would be good.....as for my ears(both relatively fucked), the Earache albums were indeed pretty shit in comparison sound-wise.
The BBC engineer was the late Dale Griffin, of Mott The Hoople fame, and he seemed to have the knack of capturing a group by simply recording the instruments correctly and mixing them so that the listener could actually hear the different parts of the group as a whole....ie nothing fancy.

ahhh ... happy days

knew fk all about this lot and then Peely started playing Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror ... don't know which was first ... but i know he used to rock up in Ipswich (not far from his stately home) for ENT gigs, take them from the soundboard and then broadcast them as live sessions ... c'mon Mr Z ... give the world a bit of Extreme Noise Terror!

@ Judas ... there was that shortest song ever thing, i always assumed it was from the detractors (what? it doesn't have a 15 minute intro and a drum solo? it must be shit!). I bought the Grindcrusher LP when it came out ... came with a 7" that was very pisstakingly entered into the Guinness Book Of World Records as the shortest thing ever (obviously never seem my penis!).

Side A: Napalm Death = UGH!
Side B: (the wonderful) Electro Hippies = UGH!

A glorious way of saying fuck off, let's move on!

This is a great fucking session. Radio 1 always had excellent gear and technicians by the sounds of things to capture bands really well. Never heard a bad live session from Radio 1 to this day, even though a lot of it is shit nowadays. Really nice upload / share Jonny.
