Кола Бельды / Kola Beldy ‎– "Белый Остров / White Island" (Мелодия ‎– С60 27841 007) 1989

Never really been a big fan of ethnic, slash,'world' music......I blame Peter Gabriel for that, and all those  middle class Womad festival fans, whose very existence seems to remove any point in making, writing about, or listening to music at all. The very thought of millionaire urban folkies exploiting the impoverished musicians of a third world country to win a 'Grammy' for their theft, makes me wanna bash my own brains in. Specifically, I'm thinking Paul Simon here.....what a bastard he was/is!?
High in the 'Bastard' stakes, along with Simon, is Coca-Cola, but replace the 'C' with a 'K' and we get super-bizarre Nanai tribe member and trad folk singer Kola Beldy.
In 1986 he was awarded the title of 'Meritorious Artist of the RSFSR' (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist republic!?);we've all got one of those.....haven't we???He had a number of Soviet-era permfrost themed hits, most famously with the top ten smash,  "I will take you to the tundra", hmmmm yes please???......you don't get hits with titles like that in the UK.....well....I suppose we did have "Snooker Loopy",which you sure as hell wouldn't find in the Soviet Charts of the time. You wouldn't think that Chas,of Chas'n'Dave, was in Gene Vincent's backing band in the early sixties now would you?

The awards kept coming for Kola, winning "Award no.2"(that's the name of the award NOT his second award!) at the 'Sopot International Song Festival' in 1973....what "Award no.1" was, and who won it,remains a closely gaurded state secret to this day.
This album, has any number of bizarre sounds augmenting Kola's ethno-operatic fusion, which adds greatly to its score on the 'weird' scale.Certainly one for the coveted 'Other' section in the record shop.
Luckily, politics and common sense stopped Paul Simon from making a 'collaboration' with Mr Beldy, and just good luck saved him from Peter Gabriel's insidious clutches. The Iron Curtain had its uses after all?

Dr. Timothy Leary ‎– "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" (Mercury ‎– SR 61131) 1967

You've heard the record, read the book, seen the lecture? Well now we have the Movie of your journey into personal disaster and irreparable mental breakdown.
Drop some pharmaceutical grade LSD and listen to this soundtrack of the movie version of a 'Trip',with your guide Dr. Timothy Leary, and you may never come back.A chance to escape the prison of 'self', and live out the rest of your mortal tenure in cloud cuckoo land.
Your Brain is a delicate organ, and evidentially speaking, its nothing more than that. Not the slightest hint has there been of eternal portals into the kingdom of God,travels in space time, or Intelligence increase? Alternatively Plenty of evidence exists of irreparable damage to ones mental faculties. There's a long list of sixties psychedelic pioneers,or victims, who became nothing more than Human craters ,not because their souls have left to a celestial paradise, but because their synapses have been irreversably fried.
Don't do it kids, the scouting party of the sixties did it,and the reports that came back were not encouraging.
Great super weird records were the result, of which this masterpiece of Psychsploitation, is one of the weirdest.

Lil' Markie ‎– "Volume 1 : Music To Serve The Lord By" (Mark Fox Family Ministries ‎– MF-01) 1979

Christian Ventriloquists is an obscure but fruitful bracket for the downright weirdWe've had Little Marcy, there's a Little Cindy, and now ,the worst of the lot, Little Markie.
The personification of pure naked evil is usually a subjective opinion based on personal beliefs....but, I think we can all agree that Mark Fox, also know as 'Lil' Markie' comes very close to winning the prize. Hitler don't make the top three for me,'cus at least he was honest about what he wanted to do, Stalin probably gets the Bronze, second place could be Jimmy Savile's,narrowly beaten to the punch by Lil' Markie.Mainly for the demonic pro-life anthem "Diary of an Unborn Child",which includes the jolly sing a long chorus of "Why did you kill me mommy?" like a punch and Judy Linda Blair from The Exorcist; "Your Mommy's gonna suck cocks in Hell!" is what Lil' Markie is trying to say. Hopefully i'm wrong, and Hell exists specifically for this Fat Bastard only, so he can suck cocks in Hell for eternity.Looking at him, he would likely enjoy such a punishment, which reather defeats the whole idea of a 'Hell'?
Of course I exaggerate for the purpose of entertainment, but this fat lummox sporting a traditional bible belt mullet was the reason the word 'Cunt' was first used for the description of morbidly obese rednecks with a dual personality disorder.
Fox, puts on an incredibly repulsive harmonized falsetto voice to give voice to his youthful alter-ego, in thee most bizarre example of evangelism in a world of weirder than weird Evangelist preachers.
I'm not a violent person, but I think I could well enjoy kicking seven shades of shite out of this chubby messenger from Hell in Heaven on Earth.
I can only wonder if any of that angry mob of christian anti-abortionist were inspired to murder Doctors after listening to these recordings as a child in their formative years?
Apart from all that, this Sesame Street meets mental illness juvenile propaganda is some of thee most wacked out madness this side of the secure psychiatic facility at Sing Sing prison......or in this case Don't Sing Don't Sing......Pleeeeeze!.....Prison.
Which is where he belongs, without parole.
Sadly Mark Fox is still out there spreading his poison to adoring small audiences in the sewers of Hicksville America.

Little Marcy ‎– "Sings Nursery Rhymes" (Word ‎– K-702) 1967

There are people out there who think this strange detour into creepy religious cults doesn't fit the remit of this blog. Wrong, none of this shite would have ever seen the light of day, even though its makers had patently 'Seen the Light', unless these crazed simpletons had put it all out themselves, on their own labels, and making their own genre. Christians were doing it themselves well before us normal people discovered the way out of corporate slavery.
There are also people who seemed desperate to hear Little Marcy's version of old English Nursery Rhyme, "I Love Little Pussy".Renamed in the late 20th century as "I Love Little Kitty".
So, here it is, as part of the only Little Marcy album that doesn't bang on about Jesus for the duration.
Many of these nursery rhyme have decidedly iffy subject matter, and rather Pagan themes as their origin. And yes, the Pussy referred to in Marcy's most seeked out tune, does indeed, possibly, cryptically refer to a ladies naughty bits in the oldest version of the tune from 1830,by some obscure wordsmith called Jane taylor (1783-1824)
Dig that crazy cover photo.....You ,WILL, be Happy!

Little Marcy - "The Bible Story Book, Volume Two" (Word ‎– K-735) 1976

More bible stories for people with the intellect of a jellyfish,or even as low as Donald trump.
Yeah, I know its supposed to be for Kids,so I guess you can use it as a frizbee, preferably thrown against a wall so it shattered.
It wouldn't surprise me if all the shards of vinyl pulled themselves together 'Terminator 2" style, to continue the chase for our hearts and minds.

What??? Little Marcy isn't a real little girl????...she's a Puppet you say?

WHAT!?.....all lies and a very inconsistant work of confused fiction!?
This record is a prime example of what has come to be referred to as "Unintelligent Design".

Little Marcy ‎– "Marcy Sings Hymns" (CornerStone Records ‎– SLP 472) 1967

Oh Their God!....this is like funeral parlor music for infants.
I notice that they decided that a cartoon version of Little Marcy would be less traumatic for christian kiddies than the harsh reality of the Demonic Puppet herself.
Trouble is, they forgot about making the music as jolly as the cover!
Any child listening to this collection of maudlin traditional Hymns on Helium, would be swinging from their skipping ropes half way through side one.
This makes living in Heaven about as attractive as an eternal bout of dysentry.

L. Ron Hubbard / Yvonne Gillham Jentzsch ‎– "The Golden Dawn & The Aims Of Scientology - A Record About Scientology" (Axioms Records ‎– A8-8008) 1972

It says on the cover that "Scientology is an applied religious philosophy".They and the Buddha boys, like to use the word philosophy to give them some credibility.
At least The Scientologists admit to a religious aspect, but once a philosophy is applied, then it becomes a belief system.
That weird brainwashed sounding aussie bird, aka the Director of the "Celebrity Center for the creation of a higher Civilization(?)" is back to explain to us death fearers what its all about.

Its very meaningful sounding, but essentially meaningless reapeated platitudes from thousands of years of mankind trying to, as L. Ron says, "Salvage the Human Soul",and Hubbard is no exception when he promises eternal life within these crackling grooves.
The closing lines of side A do briefly allow us non-club members our own mind before we take the plunge, and I quote; "If you do not care to be accepted, that is your freedom"....thanks Ron,I'll excercise that freedom you have so kindly granted me....other people aren't so lucky.

Shoko Asahara - "Lord Death's Counting Song" (Aum Shinrikyo Records) 1990

Theres not many artists featured on this blog that have been executed, but here's one,if 'artist' is the right word for a mentally ill cult leader who thought he was Jesus?
Founder and leader of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, Shoko Asahara was sentenced to die by hanging, for his role in the Tokyo subway sarin gas attacks in 1995 and was finally executed by hanging on July 6, 2018, at the Tokyo Detention House 23 years later. But,not before he treated the surviving members ofthe human race to some of his child-like songwriting skills.
He also wrote a book called "Declaring Myself the Christ",a bit shocking that, as I thought I was the Christ, not some Japanese nutjob! Ah well,I'll have to get used to being mortal again I guess!?
The music is basically as shit as his paranoid ,anti-semitic, conspracy riddled philosophy.
His purported mission was to take others' sins upon himself, and he claimed he could transfer spiritual power to his followers. He saw dark conspiracies everywhere, promulgated by the Jews, the Freemasons, the Dutch, the British Royal Family, and rival Japanese religions.Good to see he chose some different targets for a change, and also added the obvious suspects to the mix.....The Dutch!!!?
Shoko outlined a doomsday prophecy, which included a third World War, and described a final conflict culminating in a nuclear "Armageddon",Asahara often preached the necessity of Armageddon for "human relief". He eventually declared, "Put tantra Vajrayana into practice in accordance with the doctrines of Mahamudra," and he then initiated a series of terrorist attacks, culminating in the nerve gas attack in Tokyo.
Luckily his defence team didn't play his music in court or he would have been executed immediatly.

Church Universal And Triumphant, Inc. Featuring Elizabeth Clare Prophet ‎– "Invocations for the destruction of Rock Music) ( Faithways International ) 1984/2001

I mentioned that there were little or no Female cult leaders in the "Lord of Lords" post;well I forgot about Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and the Church Universal and Triumphant.
Expecting a Soviet attack on the Ides of March 1990, the complete loonie toons of the Church Universal and Triumphant sect, sold everything to buy food, guns and ammunition, to retreat into their nuclear bunker to survive and spread the word....mainly about how nasty Rock Music was. The fact that after a nuclear Holocaust its unlikely that any Rock bands would have survived;and even if they did I doubt they'd feel like churning out their hits with the radiation sickness, lack of food an'all.
But, just in case some of these demons survived, they kindly recorded these chants and other moments of deranged madness to educate the mutants who would inherite the wastelands of Earth not to fall into the same trap.
Educate it will, if there's any electricity to play this disc, so the Mutants wouldn't be stupid enough to raise any religious beliefs from the ashes of that former civilisation.

I do, however, 100% agree with Elizabeth Clare Prophet's invocation against Rock Music, so I may have joined them in their underground bunker to avoid that Soviet nuclear attack that never came in 1990. Oh how foolish would I have felt after emerging into police custody and charged with illegal possesion of an automatic weapon.or worse, illegal possession of a wart, dancing with a mailman, and marrying a horse.(I paraphrase of course, from dodgy perv comedy genius Woody Allen's classic "Take The Money and Run"...pretty much a perfect title for most religious sects methinks?)
Unfortunately, doomsday never came, and Cindy looper (sic) still lives to spread her evil, along with:
(there are some exceptions*/** who have now followed Elizabeth to burn in Hell, but a lot are still harming our childrens ears and s0-called minds....so let us pray:

"All perversions of the third eye
Through distorted and exaggerated images
Perverted movements of the body and breakdancing
And other forms of dancing
And we especially call for the judgement in this hour
And the destroying of rock music directed
Specifically against children
Through the videos that were portrayed
And working specifically through these individuals
For whom we call for
The judgement of the sacred fire of this hour
Before the throne of almighty god

Sai Baba ‎– "Embodiment Of Love" (Premasound ‎– PS 108) 2000

As previously stated, Alice Coltrane bore a passing resemblance to Cult leader and serial pervert Shri Sathya Sai Baba. He also shared another trait with the lovely Alice, in the fact that he made records of his incredibly creepy devotional music.
This is a common behaviour within the world of the cult leader. David Koresh, Chuck manson and Rev Jim Jones all have records out there, but I think our Sai made the creepiest ones.Just waiting for some Islamic State albums to hit the market, and I'll be happy.
Sai's sexual crimes have been well documented, and looking at the album cover you have to wonder what the fuck is he doing with his hands?.......he looks like he's wanking off to me!?
With a specific taste in deflowering young boys, "The Embodiment Of Love", the album's title, forced a little bit of my stomach contents back into my mouth. In the case of some of his younger followers,I dread to think what their stomach contents were after visting the holy one in his personal tent!?
It's all Alice Coltranes fault, but i feel a detour into the creepy land of Cult music coming on......and I don't mean 'The Cult', i mean religious and hippie Doomsday cults.....so expect some Amon Duul,Chuck Manson and The Church Universal and Triumphant with Rev Elizabeth Claire. If you thought the music you like was weird, this stuff is a special kind of fresh madness.

Sun Ra ‎– "The Singles" (Evidence ‎– ECD 22164-2) 1996

Space definitely is the place if you wanna escape this fucked up planet, and there's no greater vehicle to leave Earth with than Sun Ra and his chums.
If you wanna be 'Hip' these days you gotta drop Sun Ra into your 'ain't i weird' public speaking convo's, sitting cosily alongside Captain Beefheart and Coltrane. Its coffee table royalty for the pretentious who slip a recently purchased copy of "Atlantis" on the stereo when expecting visitors. But that's better than taking drugs to be 'hip' I suppose.
A lesser discussed fact about Sun Ra, is his place at the head of the pantheon of DIY artists. No, DIY didn't start with the Desperate Bicycles, as Sun (can I call him Sun?),was doing it in the mid-fifties. Releasing bizarre Doo Wop, Lounge Jazz, and Fifties Pop singles on his own Saturn label, sometimes in incredibly shorts runs of 10 to 50. Therefore these singles are impossible to find except on this fabulous double CD.
Among the foggy Doo Wop and Christmas Singles, which have their own charm, there is inevitably some crazy stuff indeed. Who was Yochanon, The Sun man.....a total nutter? Then there's Lacy Gibson's "I'm Gonna Unmask the Batman",which is pretty out-there.Some Sun Ra classic's,notably "Love In Outer Space" with its wavering time signature, and the sing-a-long "Rocket # 9",which talks about leaving for Venus years before Europe did in "The Final Countdown"(admittedly a classic in its own right, but for different reasons).Although as Venus has a surface temperature of 400 degrees plus, has a runaway Greenhouse effect, and rains concentrated sulphuric acid;I don't recommend that anyone gets on Rocket # 9 for real.
There are even a few edited versions of Ra's later free synth finger moving avant jazz, and a seven inch version of Disco 3000.So the coffee table avant-gardists won't be disappointed; even though this would be the only Sun Ra record they ever play in private.

DDAA ‎– "La Famille Des Saltimbanques" (ADN ‎– ADN TAPES 06) 1984

Another from the desirable category of “Other”, or in this case “Autre”, are French weirdo's, DDAA(Déficit Des Années Antérieures - or in English; A Debt to the the past?). A Gallic Residents and/or amphibian cousins of Renaldo and the Loaf .Around since1979,when the Residents were good. This cassette was released just as their Louisiana born cousins(which is the French bit of the USA),The actual Residents, were turning shit; and even Renaldo's loaves were becoming stale. Thankfully, no Emulators harm the bizarre tunes on this tape;the instrument that did for the Residents, would definitely not be available in France until a few years after everywhere else. I'm not a great fan of France or French music(as you may have guessed from a previous post here), post 1956, but there are exceptions to most rules, and DDAA are one of these. Fine music made with very little equipment, where technology is replaced and superseded by inventiveness and a ladle full of obtuse weirdness.

Various Artists - "Frank Johnson's Favorites" (Ralph Records RR8110) 1981

As selected by the Ralph records computer, a certain mr Frank Johnson(Oh those Zany chaps!). Here are his/her/its favourite Ralph Records recordings. Mostly obscure B-sides, and unreleased compositions from Ralph's band of weirdo's from around 1977 to 81. No Chrome on this one, but this is compensated for by a hefty number of Englishmen. San Francisco must have ran out of weirdo's!?

Great tracks by UK pub Rocker, Phillip Lithman, aka Snakefinger; unreleased gibberish from the medical men of Renaldo and the Loaf; a couple of Henry Cow connected numbers from Fred Frith and Art Bears; Swiss art pop from Yello; more MX-80 Sound avant rock riffage; and two decent singles from Tuxedo Moon (when they were still good).

Of course we also get a couple of excellent Residents B-Sides,which, naturally are the best, and weirdest ,of the bunch.

A great compilation to alienate your conformist friends, and to prove that you are an intellectual who can appreciate things from outside of outside the box.

Sleeve Notes:

Compilation of single B-sides and non-LP tracks selected by Frank Johnson, the Ralph Records computer (at that time):

Various Artists ‎– "Subterranean Modern" (Ralph Records ‎– SM7908) 1979

"Subterranean Modern was Ralph Records' first album involving music from anyone other than The Residents or Snakefinger. The idea was to widen Ralph's appeal by bringing a greater variety of styles into the label. To this end Ralph had four band submit contributions on the theme of "San Francisco". Each was required to include a version of <a href="/artist/Tony+Bennett">Tony Bennett</a>'s I Left My Heart In San Francisco. The four bands chosen were The Residents (of course), Chrome, Tuxedomoon, and MX-80 Sound..." (notes from The Residents website)

Another fantastic compilation with The Residents on it is the near perfect “Subterranean Modern”, which was the first release on Ralph to feature 'other' bands other than The Residents. What a magnificent quartet of examples from the crusty edge of the pop-pie we have here.
The proto-industrial punk of the beyond great Chrome, the proto alt-rock pre-post punk of MX80 Sound, the unclassifiable Residents (sigh!), and Tuxedomoon from when they were good,if not great!
This is the format that best showcases The Residents, like side one of 'Fingerprince; like 'Duck Stab',like 'The Commercial Album',like 'The Tunes of Two Cities'; amongst too few other examples from the eyeball headed ones vast back catalogue, that, quite frankly, after 1984 sucked bad! They were always better, touching on genius with the shorter avant-pop format than the stretched out concepts of, for example, Eskimo.Maybe 'The Big Bubble(part Four of the Mole Trilogy)' was their last good album. Also the over embracing of the 'latest' technology also fucked up the inventiveness......as it does with everyone. Here we have The Residents at their absolute peak of strangeness.
