Various Artists - "Cultural Terror Volume 1 and 2 (" a Zeal SS Sampler) (Zeal SS – .77) 1986

Well, i've never been more insulted in my life!?...these chaps seem to think Nazi's are great blokes, shocking. I've a good mind to phone the bizzies * (*a collective scouse noun for the police in Liverpool". The one man Power Electronics band, Con-Dom, used to grope female members of the ,admittedly very small, audience....until attitudes on such behaviour changed in recent years. His act would now result in serious jail time for sexual assault, all in the name of Shock Value......but that's Rock'n'Roll innit?
Most of the acts on this patience testing double C-60, spend most of their time being Whitehouse for five minutes or so,with seemingly very little interest in doing otherwise; ironic as William Bennett (the bloke in Whitehouse) himself has very little time for a few of the acts/bands featured on this exceedingly nasty compilation.
What my mother must have thought when she brought a cup of Tea up to my bedroom in the early 80's I'll never know. She seemed oblivious to the 'orrible racket emanating from these tapes, and other similar recordings of the time. Not as shocking as one may think.Similarly, my father seemed equally disinterested in the scraping and rumbling upstairs, even when one of Hitlers speeches blasted out of the noise and echoed down the street. No-one else seemed to give a Fuck either.....and y'know what I think they were right.
In the desperate struggle to achieve shock value ,the creators of this non-musicianly cacophony forgot one thing,'avoid being boring'.
I'm desensitized to noise in general,so for me,a subtle splash of melody here and there could only add to the Horror, like in a John Carpenter film......admittedly there are a couple of tracks which do have these qualities on here, but another thirty or so that certainly do not.
Don't let this put you off if you haven't yet been numbed to shock values.....exposure to such oscilloscope breaking phenomena is essential if you want to advance oneself in the subtler arts of music, and put the Roland space-echo and Hitlers' Speeches LP out to pasture.
Yeah,that's Right, I Like this tape.....a-lot.
I just wanna hear something I haven't heard before.

Doxa Sinistra – "Conveyer-Belt" (ADN – ADN TAPES 15)1985

On the same cassette label that Phil, not Paul, Kelday's New 7th Music released a singular tape on,which fancied itself as one of those rather popular Industrial labels that we were getting sick of by 1985;just as this foursome of ambitious Dutchmen fancied their chances of being a popular chartbound Minimal Wave EBM Industrial combo.
Doxa Sinistra start off sounding like Donna Summer covering one of the sillier Depeche Mode industrial incarnations, and end up on the pretentious platform awaiting the next train to Bollocks-ville.
Anything describing itself as a 'Noise Painting' is to be steered well clear of.
However, a few of these tracks could be described as Minimal Synth classics, which would get many a string vested bondage and leather S&M trend follower working up a lather in his crotchless PVC underpants on the dancefloor on Gay Tuesday back in 1985,and for those of you who are too late for the trend, back in 2010 as well.So i guess we'll be donning our leather bikers cap, plastic trousers and chains again in 2035 if my graph is correct. This stuff never goes out of fashion for too long.
Have you ever noticed that when a Dutchman sings he sounds not unlike Professor Steven Hawkings's Speak and Spell machine voice...and this group are certainly no, exception.

New 7th Music – "In A Dream" (ADN – ADN TAPES 19) 1985

Paul Kelday sometimes appeared on the cassettes made by his brother Phil's improv group 'New 7th Music', which involved doing what you felt like doing and calling it music basically. So don't expect going on a ambient cosmic journey into the farther reaches of the infinite pulsating brain at the center of the universe. This is the kind of music,in the loosest sense of the word, that our hominid ancestors would have played as soon as they picked up a dead beast's jawbone and beat each other to death with it.
As spontaneous music combo's go, these chaps aren't quite of the Derek Bailey,Hans Bennink,Evan Parker ,Scratch Orchestra standard, and more like a club of weirdo's who meet every Tuesday evening at the community centre ,tape recorder in hand......;but that's what I like about it. Ain't no criticism;we exist here to celebrate the Geek, and reject the mundane.....although a lot of the time the mundane is as equally alienating for the vast magnolia coloured armies of pointlessness,as it is mundane. When done correctly the most abominable of species can be used satisfactorily against your brainwashed oppressors.
Just listening to this could well get you euthanised in the new Russian empire that suddenly awoke recently....much to the 'joy' of 84% of the Russian public according to a recent Russian Government Poll which required contact details and ID before receiving an answer,as three tooled-up thugs wait for a signal near-by.

Tracklist:

A1 Live At The Richmond, Brighton
A2 In A Dream
A3 Violin Phase
B1 The Bitter Humours Of Fermenting Passion Flow

WeR7 ‎– "Rock'n'Roll is the Most" (Music For Midgets ) 1983

Basically WeR7 was a classic UK DIY project based around Gary Ramon and Antony Clough of Modern Art(etc).
It has all the hallmarks of original DIY, such as fuzzy sound quality, no songs, cheap drum box, experimentalism to replace ability, tapes of dialogue,no ambition....you name it it's here.
They were later to go minimal synth on us.....sucessfully I may add.

What it says on the tape insert:
Jo Change was recorded on 4-track and previously released on the compilation bearing the same name. Don't Surrender was featured on the cassette Dance To This which has been deleted.
...
Recorded by Conventional Tapes, 1 Atkinson Court, 2 Kings Close, London E10. Available from Music For Midgets, 40 Thompson Road, Langley Green, West Midlands.

Members of WeR7 can be found on tapes by The Ordinary, The Casual Labourers, The Door And The window, The Modern art, New 7th Music and Mystery Plane.

Various ‎Artists – "Purple Twilight" (Color Disc ‎– Colors 2) 1985

Despite 'Color' being a glaring spelling error, (The american spelling!), there are very few errors on any of their compilations.
Purple Twilight being one of them.Although the title would suggest that it may have been one of those Bam Caruso Brit-psych/Freakbeat compilations, if one didn't know better.
There are some Neo-Psych tracks within however, but scattered among the Minimal Synth, proto-Indie tchoons, and Cold wave classics. The Duke Of Disrespect also makes another, but welcome, appearance with the samplerdeclic non-hit hit, "You Tell Lies".
Experimental improv combo,'New 7th Music', featuring Paul Keldays brother ,Phil, also makes a very rare outing on vinyl.
A smogasbord of excellence.

A wide ranging compilation that included all the leading lights of the UK Electronic Underground.....aka a fancy way of saying 'Prog'......are collected on this c-90/c-60 double package.Compiled in 1985 by our chums from the Ultima Thule Record Shop in Leicester; whose own projects (Alto Stratus and Zircon etc) take up a hefty 20 minutes of tape time.....and why not?
A wide range of abstract experimentation is on display over these two and a half hours, ranging from Ambient electronics to mid range Industrial, to the madness of DDAA,categorised in the 'Other' category on iTunes.

Various Artists ‎– "The Elephant Table Album" (X Tract ‎– XX 001) 1983

Companion album to "Three Minute Symphony" compiled, again, by Dave Henderson ,late of the now defunct Sounds newspaper.Full of great tracks, even the 400 Blows track is fantastic, i think they went downhill fast after this single.
Its not perfect, (which is perfection?), as The Legendary Pink Dots do only a mildly irritating version of their Syd Barrett fans play with casiotone keyboards and pots'n'pans stuff.....still made me wanna punch somebody though!
We also got a minimal Coil track which is virtually a slow TR808 solo; dare to be minimal!
SPK on the cusp of becoming total Shite, the excellent Lustmord, Portion Control transmuting into their nasty vocals phase(which i'm not too enamoured about).
To sum it all up, it has its faults, but  a classic old school Industrial compilation, and a great starting point for the Industrial virgin to catch the 80's underground In flagrante delicto! (I don't really speak Latin by the way!)

Throbbing Gristle - "24 Hours" (Cassette Version) (Industrial Records) 1980

T.G. were always at their best in a live environment, no performance being exactly the same, each 'song' in a different version. Therefor

I cannot pick out one of these cassettes as superior to the other, all are superb live documents of a band at their peak, making a type of music that was never heard before; this is (non) musical history in the making.
listening to 24 hours of T.G. is never boring, and is a thoroughly recommended pastime. I wouldn't give the same recommendation for listening to 24 Hours of Dire Straits for example......in fact that very thought gives me suicidal, or even genocidal, urges. Why Knopfler hasn't been tried for crimes against humanity I'll never know!!?
Limited to just 50 numbered copies, each one personalized to the buyer and dated. Each copy is unique with hand-made collages on each of the primary (signed) information card. Each set also came with three colour-copied inserts (colour copies were very expensive and rare in 1980 when these were made). One featured an informal shot of the band while another was a collage by G P-O of the proposed "Industrial Records HQ". Copies also contained 2 full-sized b&w original photos: one a classic press shot and the other an informal image of the band being interviewed (by a small radio station in US). Some copies came with two cassettes of interviews,.....IRCA and IRCB,included below after IRC26.
Each set retailed for 88 UK pounds (for UK) or 99 UK pounds rest of the world (postage paid).
This is, by far, the most collectible of all official TG-releases.
