I'm So Hollow - "Demos and Live Rarities (1978-80)" (a Die or DIY? Compilation)

Joy Division is a hard act to follow,
So i'll stay in their era with 'I'm So Hollow.

The tenuous link connecting these two acts to segue from Joy Division to Sheffield's 'I'm So Hollow', is that they both played the Futurama Festival in Leeds; albeit 'I'm So Hollow did Futurama 2 and JD did the first one.
However, apart from the PiL and Joy Division recordings from Futurama 1, the only other I have is one track from I'm So Hollow's set at Futurama 2 in 1980.

Having already featured their lone album "Emotion/Sound/Motion" HERE!...and their Peel Session HERE!......naturally it's time to put all their errant rare Demo's and Live appearances together in one of Die or DIY?'s crypto-compilations.

Love this group, everything about them actually.Music aside(previously described by your scribe as 'Wobbly Sci-Fi Rock'), i admire the way they stopped as soon as they had achieved their ambitions, and never did anything ever again. In fact they split up before the album was released. If only a lot more bands did that?

Joy Division - "High Hall,Birmingham University 02/05/1980" (Bootleg)

A notable performance, that brings us to the end of this seemingly endless series of Joy Division Bootlegs, for two reasons.
One, it was the only time Joy Division performed "Ceremony",and, two, this was the bands final performance.
For those of you who live on some exo-planet somewhere, Ian Curtis, vocalist and lyricist of Joy Division(?),committed suicide a little over two weeks after this concert, after enduring a turbulant personal life and suffering from worsening epilepsy.
This sad fact adds some poignancy to this performance(despite Bernard's constant bum-notes!), which sounds like a well recorded funeral march to these ears in retrospect. The lyrics read as some kind of preemptive obituary....."Ceremony", "A Means To An End" "Isolation" are all very ominous titles, but maybe the lyrics to "New Dawn Fades" seem to accurately describe his desperate situation and feelings:

New Dawn Fades:

"A change of speed, a change of style
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied, though you forget
Different colours, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless so plain to see
A loaded gun won't set you free
So you say

We'll share a drink and step outside
An angry voice and one who cried
We'll give you everything and more
The strain's too much, can't take much more
Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire
Can't seem to feel it anymore

It was me, waiting for me
Hoping for something more
Me, seeing me this time
Hoping for something else."

He does seem to be going through the motions during this performance,as do the rest of the band.
He was actually helped offstage again during "Decades", but returned for a rousing version of "Digital",which as a fitting (no pun intended) monument for his last word sung in public, included the word,'Out!';which he undoubtedly wanted to be.Then his last words were ominously "Thank you, Goodnight".

As an Epitaph to the life of Joy Division, there are better concerts; but as an elegy to the troubled existence of Ian Curtis, this show exposes his vulnerability perfectly.....it's a pity nobody noticed or were willing to do anything about it.It was an era when men's mental health was frequently laughed off, with a 'Pull yourself together man' attitude. The only answer his management and 'mates' could come up with was an 'American Tour' that their singer never made. Then we got, the not very good, New Order?!

[To those who care, its a quality soundboard recording, with two very fuzzy soundcheck recordings to kick it off with.]

Joy Division - "Imperial Hotel, Blackpool 27/07/1979" ("All Angels Beware" Bootleg)

A bit out of sequence as I failed to realise I had this, as it was listed under the title of the "All Angels Beware" Bootleg.
This is from the "Year of the Child" benefit concert, as organised by Blackpool's own Section 25.
To the uninitiated, the line-up reads like a Nazi sympathisers rally; what with Joy Division, then a band called 'Final Solution', along with some group called 'Zyklon B'!?
Also playing were the Glass Torpedoes, OMD,and Section 25 headlining.
The Joy Division set was a high octane affair, and well recorded by several audience members.

Tracklist:

01. Dead Souls
02. Glass
03. Disorder
04. Auto-Suggestion
05. Transmission
06. She's Lost Control
07. Shadowplay
08. Atrocity Exhibition.

Joy Division - "Ajanta Theatre, Derby 19/04/1980" (Bootleg)

Massive as Joy Division were becoming, they still played Shit-Holes like this former, partially demolished, cinema in Derby. The old seats were still in place, except for a few that were torn off of their perches to allow dancing, if required.
Again, another cavernous sounding audience recording, and again we are treated to a joint band version of "Girls Don't Count" for the rarity value.
Due to cancellations, probably due to Ian's failing health, this would turn out to be the penultimate Joy Division performance, before.....well,you know what happened next!?

Tracklist:

01. Dead Souls
02. Wilderness
03. Digital
04. Insight
05. Passover
06. Heart And Soul

Joy Division - " Winter Gardens, Malvern 05/04/1980" (Bootleg)

Incredibly, instead of taking at least one day off after Ian's epileptic fit at the Moonlight Club the previous evening , they played another gig the next night!?.....he really was doomed wasn't he?
Seems like a decent performance however,if the recording of it is a little cavernous. It does finish with everyone one from Joy Division and Section 25 doing a version of S25's "Girls Don't Count", to which an audience member remarks, "He-He-Hey! A bit of variety(pronounced 'vari-e-teh' in an East Midlands accent)".
Who said entertainment was dead?

Joy Division - "Moonlight Club,Hampstead, London 02/04/1980 ,03/04/1980 & 04/04/1980" (Bootleg)

Two good quality(the third night is a bit muffled) audience recordings from the infamous 4 gigs in three days stint at the beginning of April 1980. This included three consecutive nights at The Moonlight Club in West Hampstead, with a 'big gig' at The Rainbow sandwiched inbetween.
Utter madness considering Ian Curtis's failing health.
Predictably, on the night of the fourth, after playing an intense performance at the Rainbow, Ian was noticeably ill, and after twenty minutes into their second gig of the night at The Moonlight Club, Ian had another epileptic attack at the end of 'Interzone' to finish the evening. An understanding audience member shouted 'Fuck Off' as Curtis was carried offstage and Bernard announced that this was the end of the evening.
The tragic disregard of Curtis's condition was nothing more than criminal ignorance on behalf of his cohorts, and I expect nothing more from the demanding public. And it's no disconnected fact than he killed himself a month later almost to the day.

Joy Division - "Lyceum Theatre,London 29/02/1980" (Bootleg)

Probably Joy Division's most prestigious concert in their short lifetime, at the posh Lyceum Theatre.

Joy Division - "Warehouse, Preston 28/02/1980" (Bootleg)

Equipment failure plagued this concert, with Curtis actually asking for requests after a long break during 'Heart and Soul'; while they fiddled about with the amps.Naturally the accepted request was for "Shadowplay".
There's also an amusing moment when a young lady with a northern accent makes an announcement informing those poor buggers from Burnley that their coach is leaving in five minutes! As if living in Burnley wasn't bad enough as it is?
Probably one of the most interesting JD live bootlegs,if only for the solitary time that the voice of the late Rob Gretton appears on a JD Recording.("Wossgooinon?...'ookeh,'ookeh!...Wass'appnin'?)
I bet Toyah never had these problems??

Tracklist:

Joy Division - "University of London 08/02/1980" (Bootleg)

The line-up, to the uninformed, would have read like an invitation for a real happy party. What with the words Joy, Smirk, and Joke all involved in the Band monikers. The only hint at darkness was Section 25 (of the mental health act).
The Smirks were obviously a good time new wave band of also-rans, but the other three were not really party music.
Joy Division turned up with bucket loads of new technology. Synthesisers were now part of their newer, more textural downbeat sound of the new album, which they were in the capital to work on at Pink Floyd's studio, Britannia Row. Maybe JD had prog influences after-all?
The set list reflects this style modification, with virtually none of the 'Unknown Pleasures'era paint peelers involved.
The audience seemed to like it however;but then again, by this time they could have played 'The Birdie Song' and got rapturous applause.

Paul Morley wrote [NME, 16 Feb 1980]: "The full new introduction of synthesizers has not damaged the coherence and balance of the music in any way, it simply increases the amount of mood, atmosphere, ephemeral terror Joy Division are capable of."......yes he did say 'ephemeral terror'!

Joy Division - "Basement Club, Cologne 15/01/1980" (Bootleg)

Great!....a gig in Germany, which means I can talk about the war again!Yippee!
A rather muffled audience recording from the basement of a disused church in Cologne. Which must have excited Ian Curtis's Nazi obsession somewhat to be in Germany where ,apparently all that stuff kicked off big-time!
I'm afraid my father was probably collectively responsible for killing some of the audience members' family during the first thousand bomber air raid in 1942,as he was in one of those very bombers that created a fire storm I believe? The aiming point was Cologne Cathedral, which makes this gig's venue rather Ironic......but we're all friends now ain't we?.....until Brexshit anyway!
ps....I humbly apologise  for the British terror bombing during those years....undoubtedly a war crime by modern standards........my father is probably spinning in his urn right now.....sorry dad, you were just 'obeying orders' after all......hmmmmmm,now, where have I heard that before?

Joy Division - "Effenaar, Eindhoven 18/01/1980" (Bootleg)

Another great soundboard recording from our chums on the continent.........yep, i'm running out of things to say.......a reverent silence is always appropriate when writing about Joy Division anyway,so i'm shutting up.....also, I can't wait to finish this series of bootlegs and get onto something else!...No, not Joy Division's infamous appearance on the BBC2 TV show called 'Something Else' during which Curtis's glazed expression led to a flood of complaints from parents that he was on 'drugs....he was, medication for his epilepsy',.....no  I really mean......SOMETHING ELSE !

Joy Division - "Amsterdam, Paradiso 11/01/1980" (Bootleg)

Another excellent soundboard recording, thanks again to our continental cousins, this time in Holland.
If this isn't a good reason why the UK shouldn't exit the EU then I don't know what is?

Joy Division - "Les Bains Douches, Paris 18/12/1979" (Bootleg)

Again we have to thank France for saving anglo-american music from themselves. This concert was the subject of a radio broadcast on the Bernard Lenoir Show on French radio, so there exists a broadcast quality recording , which was partially released on CD at the turn of the century.
This official version doesn't seem to include the whole of the performance however, but its by far the best quality recording of Joy Division in action.
So, to fill in the gaps this is the full set as recorded by an audience member on the night. It reveals that mistakes were edited out ,whole tunes dropped, and what sounds like modern effects added, with generous amounts of compression. It sounds a lot more punchy than the bootleg,or anything that had been released before under the name of Joy Division. Probably the most played release by JD in my collection.Probably the high water mark for Joy Division, before Ian's illness and personal problems took over and destroyed him.

Joy Division - "Rainbow Theatre, London 09/11/1979" (Bootleg)

By the end of this tour, The Buzzcocks were, by now, aware that Joy Division were creating far too much of an impact for a support band. So,Rumour has it, the Buzzcocks road crew fixed the sound to be shite for Joy Division and vastly superior for the Buzzcocks for this two nighter in the capital.
I haven't got a recording of the Buzzcocks set, no-one was interested enough to record that one, so I can't contrast and compare;but it sounds ok to me.Just another element in the mythologizing of Joy Division. However, it is evident that The Buzzcocks were representative of a sound that was ,by 1979, very passé ,and Joy Division was the future, or, a future that never was.

Joy Division - "Winter Gardens, Bournemouth 02/11/1979" (Bootleg)

If Ian Curtis sounded ill on the Guildford bootleg, then he really was ill for this one.Ending the set by collapsing backwards into the drums, being carried off stage and taken to Hospital in an ambulance......not a Crispy Ambulance by the way.
There are some clues as to his condition on this tape; notably the strange guitar playing on 'Love Will tear us Apart', and the strangely incoherent singing in the last two numbers of the set.
As Ian collapsed into the drums there was a Tommy Cooper Moment* as the audience applauded and asked for 'more'??...they obviously thought it was part of the show. Those rock'n'rollers eh?
The Cardiff show the next day was suitably cancelled, but he was back for the Bristol show the day afterwards, like a true professional.
Besides all that, this is a reasonably good audience recording.

*(Tommy died on live TV and the audience laughed thinking it was a joke)

Joy Division - "Electric ballroom,London 26/10/1979" (Bootleg)

This excellent quality audience recording starts off with the two worst JD tunes, but "I remember Nothing"is far darker than the album version; which is more than I can say for JD's 'Hit'."Love will tear us apart" came second to Robbie Williams' "Angels" in a poll to find the best British single of all time???????.....yes "LWTUA" is better than "Angels" at least lyrically, in fact isn't every single ever released better than that simply awful Chav's anthem?
The rest of this gig is slightly above average, despite Ian Curtis going missing for the crescendo of "Day Of The Lords".....he may have been under the weather again. He does sound rather subdued, as if his mind wasn't entirely on the job;so I suspect maybe he'd had, or was going to have, another fit.In hindsight his health situation does add an extra poignancy to this nostalgic trip.Everyone loves a tragedy don't they?....fucking ghouls!

Joy Division - "Edinburgh,Odeon, 06/10/1979" (Bootleg)

A rare chance to hear Joy Division in Scotland.Even though they sound as if they were playing in Manchester, so distant and echoy they sound on this audience bootleg recorded from the back of the Odeon in Scotland's capital.According to the diary review above, they went down a storm, and were asked back for an encore of 'Transmission';very rare for a support act.

Joy Division - "Newcastle City Hall, 04/10/1979" (Bootleg)

Joy Division were now touring as the support act for the Buzzcocks. Reports vary as to who blew the other off the stage, but I guess they did it to each other in different ways. Joy Division were a much more serious proposition, musically, than the Buzzcocks, who were much more on the pop and entertainment side of things.
Either way, this tape is of atrocious quality, like the typical audience bootleg one would buy from one of those dodgy vendor's lurking in the market on a saturday afternoon. Nevertheless, this is the only record of that evening in the north east of England.

Joy Division play to their largest crowd to date of 1200.

Joy Division - "27th August 1979: Leigh Open Air Festival, also known as "Zoo Meets Factory Half Way" (Bootleg)

Well worth two quid was the August bank Holiday line-up for the Leigh Pop Festival in 1979.
The Joy Division set was, as usual, intense .Luckily most of it was recorded over the soundboard, and has a very immediate 'live' quality about it,with clunky bass and slightly distorted vocals.
The last couple of tracks are taken from an inferior audience recording of the same concert.
As ever,profoundly exciting.

Joy Division - "Eric's, Liverpool 11/08/1979" (Bootleg)

This one is the matinee performance for the 'kids' that Eric's kindly put on for the under 15's.
Apparently Ian Curtis had an epileptic fit during the evening performance, which probably would have traumatised some of the afternoon audience.Like a true 'pro' ,he only missed two numbers, and like true pro's, the band played on instrumentally until Ian could return to the stage, post-fit.
The bootleg is a good quality audience recording, and features our boys doing a rare version of Factory stablemates, Section 25's, "Dirty Disco".

Tracklist:

03. Disorder
04. New Dawn Fades
05. Glass

Joy Division - "YMCA, Prince Of Wales Conference Centre (02/08/1979)" (Bootleg)

Mmmmm, a rather good line-up at this festival? Joy Division got lumped in on the 'commercial night' with The Teardrop Explodes and Echo and the Bunnymen.
The Throbbing Gristle performance can be found earlier on this blog as part of the "24 Hours Of TG" post.
Rema Rema, Essential Logic, Prag Vec, Clock DVA, Scritti Politti , Good Missionaries, Red Crayola, and Cabaret Voltaire, can all also be found on this blog...just click on their names.

I'll leave it to Adrian Thrills to review the Joy Division performance for me:

"If I had a flair for understatement, I could say that Joy Division were good too. The truth is they were phenomenal - the most physical hard rock group I've seen since Gang Of Four. This Manchester band have been allowed to grow at their own pace, uncramped by commercial pressures. The result is that they've created a totally distinctive, cohesive sound over the last two years...They have the spirit and the feeling." - Adrian Thrills, NME review 11th August 1979.

Interesting use of the term 'Hard Rock', which I don't think is too inappropriate.I can imagine most of JD's tunes could easily be metalized by any of these modern day Doom Metal groups;unlike The Gang Of Four's funky canon, which was responsible for motivating such horrors as he red Hot Chilli Wankers?!

04. Auto-Suggestion

Joy Division - "Roots Club, Leeds. 11/07/1979" (Bootleg)

A decent audience recording featuring a rare performance of "Candidate", and the obligatory near field audience chatter to make one feel that one was actually there.
Joy Division were nearing there peak of live performance around this time.....dunno about you but I prefer Live Joy Division to Studio Joy Division, far more powerful and intense;unlike the watered down 'visionary' glacial landscapes as created by so-called 'Mad Genius' Martin 'Zero' Hannett at Strawberry Studio's.

01. Dead Souls

Joy Division ‎– "Bowdon Vale Youth Club, Altringham 14.3.79" (Bootleg)

This well documented concert appearance was performed in what looked like, according the photographs, someone's living room. Bowden Vale Youth Club's wallpaper backdrop, seemed to suit the urban chic of Joy Division's music as much as the smog covered post-industrial wasteland that was nineteen seventies Manchester. Factory records and the IRA were to change that image, hopefully forever.

The boys were on top form on this occasion, and ,thankfully, were recorded in decent quality for posterity.
I wish my local yoof club put on gigs like this....but apparently it wasn't actually a Youth Club, but a social club organised by a local record shop owner bloke, who also put on gigs by The Red Krayola and Scritti polliti.
Joy Divisions sound was clearly designed and destined for large auditoriums, but it also suits any of size venue; what cannot be contained within any size room is the passion and intensity this group naturally put forth into this world. It's a poorer place without them.It pierces walls and taps into some kind of universal consciousness that touches us all.

Joy Division - " The Band On The Wall, Manchester, 13/03/1979" (Bootleg)

By 1979,as I have nothing from 1978, Joy Division were fully formed. This is the earliest evidence I have of that, hidden within the static. It's a very ropy recording from one of the Manchester Musicians' Collective nights at The Band on the Wall pub.
They stood out like a sore thumb alongside the other DIY bands, that played on these evenings, many of which are featured earlier on this blog .Joy Division were a unique and powerful unit, who played with a rare intensity and focus that was generally lacking among their peers.
Even on this atrocious recording one can detect that something rare and special was brewing.

04. New Dawn Fades

Joy Division (Warsaw) - "Live at the Rock Garden, Middlesbrough 14/09/1977" (Bootleg)

As my mind is addled due to recent tragic events, I'll do something unimaginative, and a trifle self-indulgent, by posting the thirty-odd Joy Division Live Bootlegs I have at my disposal. Starting, very logically with the only one I have from 1977......which was in fact a high quality soundboard recording of a 'Warsaw' gig in the incredibly grim city of Middlesbrough.
I first heard Joy Division on the "Live at the Electric Circus" compilation in early 1978.They performed as 'Warsaw' on the night, but were listed as Joy Division, and despite the rudimentary 'Punk' sound I was intrigued enough to buy the re-released version of "An Ideal For Living" ep, with the scaffolding sleeve. There was definitely some hidden intelligence behind the stupid 'Punk' facade, and potentially something unique. This was confirmed by the time they appeared on Fast Products' "Earcom 2" compilation in 1979.
Listening to them as Warsaw is like looking for the missing link between hominids and Homo Erectus. Somehow they evolved from  crawling on all fours ,in musical terms, to standing erect without any noticeable curve of transition. They just seemed to become Joy Division almost overnight.
Hearing Ian Curtis shouting like a Football Hooligan is laughable knowing now what an erudite and sensitive soul he was. It's hard to believe that this band would evolve during their short lifespan into something that would adorn the t-shirts of many vacuous celebrities in the 21st century, and still be a confirmed favourite of all doom laden teenagers everywhere.
