Symboter - "Phon-Ethik" - (Syntape 017) 1983

Dunno what I did, fuck this has fucked up my LAFMS sequence!?
See it as a repost from the olden days, with an updated link.

Olaf has got his hands on a ppg wave 2.2, an early digital synthesiser, but had good old analogue filtering; so those harsh digital sounds are less jarring on the old lug holes. Also the sound is augmented by the classic Roland Jupiter 8 polysynth, later to be shamed forever by The Human League (mk.2) in their many hits. A cassette full of beautiful analogue warmth, with quite a few decent tunes.Often straying very close to the dangerous waters of soundtrack and library music, but still sticking to the traditions of 70's/80's German electronic musik. Dunno if the title refers to some kind of ambitious attempt at Ethnological Forgery, previously attempted by CAN or not.Although,it does sounds like an adequate version of the modern technological tribal music, but without the mind killing jackboot beat that has stifled youth dissent for the past 25 years. Honest electronic musik before it was turned into the ultimate W.M.D (weapon of mass distraction). Also, the best Symboter cassette.

Le Forte Four (With Patients) ‎– "Boris The Spider/Priceless" (Cortical Foundation ‎– organ of Corti 28) 2001

Remember when Philip Glass made a minimalist 'Symphony' out of David Bowie albums, well, this is Le Forte Fours' Non-music symphony based on the Who's novelty hit,  Boris The Spider.
I've always liked the idea of doing hour long versions of popular tunes, and this is a pretty decent effort at subverting the popular form.
Recorded around 1973,the song itself appears only as a chaotic band rehearsal crossed with 'The Trogg tapes', buried amongst a collage of looney toons recordings from the TV, excerpts from The Mothers of Inventions fine 'Uncle Meat' album,Dr Demento show, Monty Python, and various other stolen moments from various media forms. Fundamentally a nascent form of Plunderphonia, reminiscent of fellow LAFMS artist Dennis Ducks Disco album.
This is either a tribute to their main influences, or a comment on the flood and over-availabilty of art as entertainment, which changes almost every day like switching over hundreds of TV channels with your remote control in the comfort of your living room.Theres too much information, too much art, and too much that passes for 'Entertainment' ; so much of everything, that it all drowns in itself, and kills any possibility of real originality. Nostalgia for the days when we had freedom from choice rather than no choice, but to have freedom of choice ; far too much choice.
Or,as I suspect, were the Potts brothers and friends just having fun?
As I like Looney Toons cartoons,The Mothers of Invention, and members of the Who(but never Daltrey)always seem to make up part of my fantasy Super Group of Rock, I have to like this record........and I do.

Airway ‎– "Beyond The Pink Live" (Cortical Foundation ‎– organ of Corti 27) 2001

As, apparently Airway are performing today ,to mark the summer solstice, and we're still on a Los Angeles free Music society trip; here's the Airway live album from 2001,complete with two video's for your pleasure.
For those who know not what this collective sounds like; imagine a disaster movie where several jumbo jets are crashing into the mother of all garbage dumps, discarded detritus from a thousand modern households flying in unpredictable directions. Kitchen white goods colliding with dying aircraft engines, and crash landing in a landfill site full of metal cans of varying sizes.
A parable for modern times or what?
Its every man for himself kids, and its coming to your town!
unfortunately Airway will not be coming to your town any time soon, except if you live in Culver City, California, I suppose?

"Beyond The Pink Live" combines an assortment of past Airway alumni with some first timers. You should experience Airway at dangerously high volume while taking care to protect your hearing."

Prostate Gland Massagers - "PGM" and "Songs Everybody Knows" (self-released") 1984

Prostate Gland Massagers- "PGM + Songs everybody knows"
Before the Steaming Coils were called....er.....The steaming Coils, they were called?.......thats right, The Prostate Gland Massagers.
Here we have the madness of the teenage mind  captured in all its inspired glory. This is the closest American equivalent of the UK DIY cassettes I have heard, and 'Songs Everybody Knows' includes the best ever version of Brit Metal classic, 'Paranoid';with an hilarious slowing down of the main riff hook that totally emasculates and de-rocks the rock anthem terminally. They also manage to de-funk "Play That Funky Music", which is something to celebrate.
It also includes probably the only cover of a Faust song ever; in fact there are two Faust covers, both from their least interesting album(Faust IV).The krautrock vibe ends it all, with an (cough)....Amon Duul II cover???? Not too many of those about either; obviously vociferous record collectors were the PGM's!
A steaming cauldron of frothy creativity on overdrive. Love it loads.

Steaming Coils - "Complete: The Archive" (1985 - 1989)

Before Uber-Blog Mutant Sounds got forced out of existence by evil powers and the general shit that life brings; they had the fortune to have full access to the unreleased Steaming Coils Archive, thanks to the very accommodating mr Brad Laner.
To save me straining my ,already strained, brain from searching for the many deserved superlatives that describe this fantastic band ; i'll resort to some lazy cut'n'paste thievery from the dust gathering Mutant Sounds site itself. As it(Mutant Sounds) hangs there in cyber space like a lost tomb full of mummified, but largely inaccessible(the links are broke), treasures.
I have raided this hallowed sepulchre of these underground musical treasures, and reanimated them for you all to enjoy once more.
A kind of blog grave-robbing if you will?

Que some paraphrased Mutant musings that include the word 'Seminal':

"The final word for enthusiasts of this seminal
L.A. underground project of Brad Laner and David Chrisman: a complete archival haul of all remaining unreleased Steaming Coils material spanning the full length of their career, all direct from the master tapes courtesy of Brad. From the feral teen freakishness of the early proto-Coils , to the gorgeous material from their abandoned fourth studio album, this is a pure goldmine of insular, hermetic art damage and warped psych pop smarts, with the full array of their musical co-conspirators present here, from the early L.A. Free Music Society-related era that included Rick Potts, Joseph Hammer and Spencer Savage to latter-day accomplices like James Grigsby and Lynn Johnston from The Motor Totemist Guild. A terminal mindfuck of herculean proportions....grab 'em all!"

Steaming Coils ‎– "Breaded" (Nate Starkman & Son) 1991

The final Steaming Coils release was recorded in 1988 but only released some three years later on some weird german label. Obviously too weird for any Americans to be interested in releasing it, after the sublime 'other planet' avant pop of their first two efforts!?
This posthumous(?) effort is more accessible than the previous albums, with catchy tunes that could appeal to the 'indie' kids; but still with that skewed Brad Laner/LAFMS alternative reality perspective.
Personally, my least favourite Steaming Coils from everything, released and unreleased that they ever did; but still brilliant.

Steaming Coils ‎– "Never Creak" (Rotary Totem Records ‎– RTRLP006) 1987

The best official Steaming Coils LP (featuring LAFMS's Rick potts) release is Never Creak. A near perfect perversion of the Pop art form, changing into something even more bizarre than 'the Birdy Song'. This group had the craft of creating an abstract melody, as if transmitted from the goldie-locks zone of a random exo-solar system, down to a kind of  effortless uber-art.Something truly unique crawling from the primaeval soup of Rock'n'Roll.

Steaming Coils ‎– "The Tarkington Table" (Motiv Communications ‎– motiv prod 7) 1987

Another Los Angeles Free Music Society related band is, The Steaming Coils, featuring Brad laner(of Nervous Gender fame), among others.
The Tarkington table is a masterclass in skewed abstract pop music. the music The Residents would have made if they could play instruments.
Totally forgotten and overlooked , I can't describe the feelings I have in my dysfunctional brain when I play this LP, which is more often these days, and i'm trying not to mention the overused word,"genius".
The difficulty in creating unpredictable melodies is immense in these post everything times, post- the nu renaissance of the 1960's. Records like this may never be made again! Its effortless beauty brings tears to the eyes of someone regularly accused of being an android.....(mainly by a procession of boring girlfriends of the past).....emotions do lurk behind my dead eyes, and art like this does tap into them.
(anyway isn't anger an emotion?)
Am I going over the top about an ignored record from over 25 years ago?......er....No?
And this ain't their best album either!

Various ‎– "Darker Skratcher" (Los Angeles Free Music Society ‎– LAFMS#12) 1980

Classic American underground compilations are rather thin on the ground, but probably the best of them is the Los Angeles Free Music Society's “Darker Skratcher”.

It starts off with a bang, thanks to Boyd Rice and Daniel Miller (Non and the Normal), and a Rosicrucian Temple record set to a minimal electronic backing track. The Rosicruscian's were a quasi-religious sect who made records to hypnotise our children into good, clean, citizens. The best Boyd Rice track ever, and the second best thing Miller has ever done.(Don't ask what the best track by The Normal was!)

Other highlights are the Monitor track, 45 Grave's ,before they got too “gothy”, dark poppy effort,DennisDuck's Davey the Worm, and the repetitive synth-punk of Human Hands.

Amongst the more accessible material we get the usual bizarre mixed bag of strangeness from the usual LAFMS regulars, and a standard modern primitive outing from Jad fair,of Half Japanese 'fame'.

A hugely entertaining underground Californian variety show, and a great introduction for the uninitiated, into the murky darkly scratchy world of the Los Angeles Free Music Society. Enter at someone else's peril, because you won't regret it.
