The Blue Humans – "Clear To Higher Time" ( New Alliance Records – NARC 077) 1992

The Blue Humans are, basically ,that bloke from No-Wave Legends Mars;namely experimental guitarist Rudolph Grey, and a flux of artsy chums, such as ,the afore mentioned Alan Licht. Whom first came to notice in the late-1970s New York City post punk and trendier than thou downtown Noo Yawk art scene which also spawned such nerds as Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca and such like.
I thought all members of Mars had to be 'resting' actors, seems i'm wrong. The others went on to be completely unknown, but Rudolph made a meagre living attacking an out of tune guitar within yet without the medium of Free Improvisation, come on we've all done it? Especially mucking around on stage with various ad-hoc combo's such as The Blue Humans.
Rudolph wasn't just a pretty face y'know? 'Twas he wot wrote that much needed biography of acclaimed trash movie maker Edward D. Wood jr, the mind behind the worlds first anti-nuclear movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space"....a film some people have inexplicably labelled 'thee Worst Movie Ever Made' !????....which is of course far from the truth and very close to being utter bollocks.
Like Grey's music, Woods movies seemed to have been made up as they went along, and were, arguably.....very arguably as it turns out, the closest anyone has come to making a genuinely 'Free' Movie. An art concept drafted in from the Oort Cloud, beyond which dwells the mysterious Planet Nine.

Guerilla Toss – "Young Christian Balls" (Digitalis Limited – Ltd #235) 2012

Guerilla....NOT...Gorilla, Toss. Were/are like an Tribeca version of Melt Banana...but only when they have their Zany Female singer.
Without said singer they turn into some lower Manhattan  abstract progressive jazz group  that could easily attract the ears of arrogant metropolitan elitest John Zorn.
In fact, in 2013 they had an album, with singer, released on Zorn's label;... so that shows what I knoe dunnit~?
Dunno why she (Kassie Karlson) was absent on this one, but she's transforms them into ...er....The Tribeca version of Melt Banana....and whats wrong with that? If you're an cultural exile from the Ghetto listening to the bourgeois   intelligentsia slap themselves on the back by being way-out there, purely because they could. Then there's quite a lot that would annoy you on this cassette.
As for me/moi, i'm bourgeois intelligentsia from the Ghetto myself , and they, the under-clas can fuck themselves. If they could have beat me up everyday as I listened to to arty elitest  nonsense like this, they would have. These fuckers grew up to vote for Brexit and MAGA. Fuck the poor and Fuck the Rich.In their own despicable way they are the same old fucking repression that would love to re-open the labour camps for fools like us.The Intelligentsia and degenerate art is the first target of the pure evil that ejaculates forth from the minds of kids denied opportunities in art simply because they never got the chance. Too stupid to realise they could make their own opportunities....... if only they had someone to blame?
This comes as I hear that the Russian father of a young girl who drew an anti-war picture in kindergarten,is now on the run escaping an arrest warrant. Putin is a classic example of the bitter psychopath, getting his pathetic revenge on the world that he plans to re-name "Greater Russia" (lol) one day, after their non-existant Satan 2 ICBM's help turn the planet into an survivable irradiated  wasteland......yeah greater Russia indeed.......for want of a better word, even though there aren't many better words in the English Dictionary than......TWAT!

Dag Nabbit! I never got around to talking about some Young Christian's Balls!?...maybe next time huh?

The Golden Palominos – "A History: Vol. 1 (1982-1985)" (Mau Mau Records – MAUCD 625) 1992

Fuckin' 'ell Anton Fier,of virtually every band that was worthwhile in New York and Cleveland in the 80's bur primarily the mainstay of The Golden Palominos ,has also kicked the bucket;but in this case it was an 'assisted' bucket kicking in one of those dodgy 'non-profit' clinics in Switzerland,Dignitas innit? Of which I saw no mention anywhere.
He wasn't ill apparently. He just decided he'd had enough. He couldn't drum as well as he wanted anymore and said he felt he had achieved everything he wanted and it was time to go. I thought that kind of behavior was illegal if you weren't ill?...or was he? It's been a long time since he had a record out? Did he have some degenerative disease or summut? The drummer with Strobe Talbot has MS,and discovered that by forcing himself to drum,he could regain his cognitive abilities on said instrument......!?...Maybe Anton was a tad hasty with his decision to top himself at the age of 66! What's the point of suicide anyway, we have eternity to be be dead, and we were all dead for an eternity before we were born.Wrong decision Anton. There are plenty of children getting their heads blown off by a bunch of Russian Wankstains who would love to have swapped places.
The list of groups bands and soloists that Anton has added his drumming and artistic skills to is far too long, and boring to list here (Pere Ubu blah blah blah....),but the most Anton-centric of the lot has to be The Golden Palominos, who existed from 1981 to the twenty-teenies. So, as the best days of any band, are the early days, I have decided to post a compilation of the those very ''Early days when he wasn't in 'The Feelies'.
The understated, and under reported, method of his passing, was also a tribute to the man, having never sold out to the commercial opportunities of someone who could boast a Cv as long and comprehensive as Anton Fier's....you know I still dunno how to pronounce his name!?..insult or tribute, you decide.
Here's the legal Swiss  bumpf on assisted suicide from non-selfish motives. It's legal, if, for example, lethal drugs are prescribed and the intended recipient takes an active role in the drug administration? Sounds a bit dodgy to me, but who am I to stop anyone from deciding for themselves when they can end all this surreal madness at a time of their choosing.
He leaves us with a vast legacy of work, some of which is on this early nineties compilation, that even boasts Michael Stipe and John Lydon as guest vocalists,...i'll cease the name dropping and present to you this rather fancy compilation of some genuinely great downtown Noo yawk fancy-pants music...sophisticated and experimental,so you can bet yer bottom dollar that Bill Laswell is hanging out waiting for the photo ops...you know the crowd,Zorn, Lindsey, Laswell etc,the kind of downtown sophisticates that people like us should curtsy to if allowed within their golden auras.
Quite a bit of the later tracks sound like that terrible PiL album, called 'Album'...mainly because it had...you guessed it Bill Laswell on it...and the drums, played by the late Anton himself, reminds one of the (uncredited) drumming on 'Album',which i had previously presumed was shared by twin legends,Tony Williams and Ginger Baker....by this evidence it was Anton Fier who did the drumming and skillfully avoided a credit in the process;and also why Lydon makes an appearance on this comp, from just around the time he was making that offending disc to confirm to himself, and those dumb enough to think Levene and Wobble made the music in PiL, his own genius....or lack of therein.

UT – "Ut" (Out Records – OUT R 01) 1984

Another early UT,again recorded at Cold Storage, ably assisted by Charles Bullen...he of This Heat....under the auspices of John Loder, who produced or provided technical expertise to a plethora of Punky Rocky types, most notably, from my point of view, Rudimentary Peni ;can't get better than that...so no surprise that he died before he turned 60.
Luckily I've never achieved anything as perfect as Rudi P or i'd only have 2 years to live!
Charles and John had a brave stab at recording UT,the result of which is this EP,and showcases UT's classic improvised No wave tunage. Discordant struming,a fine sounding muddy Bass, and a drum kit reduced to tribal toms without the Funk,no flim-flams or paradiddles here, just things being hit with sticks.

UT – "Conviction" (Out Records – OUT R 03) 1985

UT recorded at This Heat's / David Cunningham's Cold Storage facility shocker! Recorded/produced by Henry Cow chap Tim Hodgkinson, who contributes his nefarious saxophonal abilities,as well as some dodgy drumming.....all assisted by all round 'decent chap' Charles Bullen, late of This Heat. You may even notice,Tim's ugly fizzog displayed on the cover surrounded by pretty avant-garde rock chicks looking moody and existential;or is that Antonin Artaud?...also looking moody and existential...he was an Ac-tor you know.I also suspect that our fun chum Antonin is the fellow in an unfortunate postion on the cover too.
It seems, even experimental avant-rock No wave music never fails to cash in on having a pretty lady on the cover at the slightest opportunity.
At the risk of being brought to tears by a mob of livid and shouty vegan lezzers I must approve of this brazen use of female imagery as bait for the casual male music nerd to chance an arm on....or at least a wrist?
As jolly good UT are.....i think they are still going sporadically?....they seem unappreciated in their native lands, never gaining a release there from a US based label. Brits always like a less successful in america american looming on the local scene don't they? And dismissing them as Avant-Wank fodder is a trifle disingenuous of me....but funny. However, this debut Lp doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of their later work .....don't get me wrong,it's still jolly good,it's just that there was better to come....oh alright I fancy them too.....they have pulses don't they?

UT – "Ut Live Nov 1981" (Out Tapes – OUT 001) 1982

A tangle with the DCMA(Copyright protection shit) has left me upset and directionless. It seems that some corporate entity has Steve Beresfords back, so this leaves me no choice but to act on a recent suggestion as to "Why No UT?".....also 'Cut Hands' was put forward...but that's William Bennett, and the same reason exists as to why there is no longer any Whitehouse on this blog......although William was very polite about it,so I complied like the pop stars bitch I am.
I am sensing another crackdown like that last seen in 2012,so it seems that every decade we get some shit....I have it all backed up ready.
I suppose UT are No wave are they not? I am told that the tunes,or No Tunes, are improvised behind the words, which are not???? Why?
Apparently, not having actually seen UT live, they were well known for long..."Artistic"....discussions between pieces,as to who plays what and what goes where. I suspect a reluctance for rehearsal time here.
The sound quality is very good.Obviously taken from the sound-desk,and,as proudly displayed on the cassette itself...."No Dolby".....I am tempted to do some Spinal Tapisms here, but will refrain...but its true innit...You don't do heavy metal in Dolby!
I don't really know if UT were posh girls from wherever Posh Girls come from in the USA,but i suspect it is so. I am reassured by my reluctance to Google to see if they were actors, like Mars were, which is a real turn off.Do these people know real pain? The music suggests they do if you listen with your mind. The juries out,and the verdict hasn't been corrupted by exposure to media sources, mainstream or alternative. The pop'n'rock world is littered with fake news, which is all part of the myth that makes it all so much more enjoyable. The right wrong facts make it all so much more ....well...y'know? Somethings are best left unsaid....They're Posh alright! Not quite at Marianne Faithful levels but enough to ooze art schooling paid for by rich parents. If that qualifies at all as Posh?
The politics of Envy are big on these shores, but i don't envy being dismissed as Posh....which of course I have been back in the fertile seed beds of my distant youth, where the weeds grew woody and bitter, and no-one is allowed an escape route by the fellow inmates.
So i think that all means that UT are good.

Mahogany Brain – "Smooth Sick Lights" (Pôle Records – PÔLE 0013) 1972 /1976

Mahogany Brain invented UK DIY,even though they are French, and Outsider Punk!? You know rather like how The Ramones didn't Invent Punk Rock, and the Bad Brains didn't invent Hardcore. The difference is that Mahogany Brain didn't claim to have done anything, after the fact.
This album could be passed off as a lost Jandek album,in fact, this was released, four years after it was recorded, around the time Jandek was called The Units, and made "Ready For The House". It could also be the first No Wave album,or Danny and the Dressmakers on a bad day,The Prats ,or any number of UK DIY legends......but these nutjobs are french ain't they? There's no way Mahogany Brain would get a cultural arts grant from the French government making stuff like this. They can't play!....which was especially rare in 1972 when this was recorded. The only chord these zany chaps knew is the cord that leads from the guitar to the amp,and that's exactly how it should have been.Sounding like four persons playing four different tunes, all out of tune, at approximately the same time.Outsider Prog is the best i can do to categorise this rare work of Gallic genius. Like all of the realllly great bands, they played only one gig, then it was mission accomplished.Which explains the look of confused satisfaction that adorns the face of band leader Patrick Geoffrois. They would have been huge in 1979,if only they had waited.

The Sickness – "Complete Sickness (1979 -1981)"

The group that kinda beat Flipper to it,but were in the wrong town were The Sickness from Boston;a town more famous for its straight edge hardcore puritans, rather than the crawling slovenly gutter punk of The Sickness, and her relatives.
If that wasn't good enough, they then divided like bacteria to become Kilslug and The Groinoids. The Groinoids especially often finding themselves on Hardcore compilations surrounded by a bunch of Dischord wannabees, going on about womens rights and other very noble themes.
Minor Threat they ain't!?The Sickness undoubtedly got Drunk, took class B drugs, and celebrated the seedier side of life. They either meant it, or they were living art objects, reflecting their intended targets in noise. This stuff is for people who won't 'Take the Knee', and I'm not referring to our Eastern European chums....those ethnically pure swarthy mono-browed Hungarians actually mean it when they boo and make monkey noises at the Black English footballers. This music is about, but not by, those cro-magnon survivors who are a casually placed Nazi salute away from actually killing someone who isn't like them. They're just waiting for the next term in office for the horrific Mr Trump,or his endorsed clone;but this time it'll be no-more mr Nice Guy...he wants 'revenge'.
I hear the Donald's approval rating is now above Biden's,so get building that bunker now while you have the chance.....and take some Sickness,Groinoids and Kilslug down there with ya.

Ornette Coleman – "Dancing In Your Head" (Horizon – SP-722) 1977

Most dance music feels like having a herd of migrating Wildebeest dancing ON your head. The stuff inside is conveniently forgotten.

Ornette Coleman – "Body Meta" (Artists House – AH 1) 1978

As we were briefly on the subject of Ornette Coleman in the last post,I may as well cheer myself up,and seem intelligent at the same time by posting my favourite Ornette albums, and they were all done in the 1970's,like most of Miles's were. Before at least 1969 it was too bloody jazzy for me.
By 1977/8 Coleman had realized that free jazz was far more effective if one had a semblance of  what appeared to be an accessible time signature, and a rhythm section that hung around something  us normal humans can grasp hold of and go along for the ride.
This could have been a No-Wave group from lower Manhattan, but no, its Ornette Coleman and buddies showing that they had invented No-wave years earlier but decided to do something better.
The guitarist on here, Bern Nix, appears on many James Chance records, and with many others in that trendy Manhattan clique.
But...Having been in a slump, nay, a Beirut Slump.....note clever No-Wave  reference there...as in, Emotional Slump, of late,I have indulged in the time-honored practice of listening to miserable music,Nick Drake, Sandy Denny etc...you know where i'm coming from?..All this to the point of an unhealthy obsession....by the way always veer towards the Demo versions from these artists, but definitely dangerous to your health.
To get myself out of this slump, I put this album on at huge volume, and one detected sheer unadulterated 'JOY',from both myself and the musicians. Even better when i glanced at the sleeve notes, and noticed that this stuff wasn't just totally improvised....they had charts ffs! This stuff was composed!? Which can only enhance the connection for me. Although I did notice that Ornette is dead, like Drake and Sandy, who died in the year this was released....whoops I'm slipping back into my existential crisis again.....the answer....MORE Coleman, less Guinness!?

Jandek ‎– "Berlin Sunday" (Corwood Industries ‎– CORWOOD 0834) 2020

Boy Oh Boy, you should hear this guy called Jandek! He can't play his guitar and has released hundreds of albums......bla bleh halb .....if you've never heard or haven't heard of Jandek/Sterling Smith by now, what rock have you been living under?
If you think No Wave was weird, then this appearence in front of Berlin's arty gliteratti at Der Haus der Kulturen der Welt, would be a very easy entry point into the murky ,wildly careering  orbit of planet Jandek."Outsider No-Wave"....how's about that for a sparcely populated category then?
This one has Sheila Smith semi-improvising some surreal lyrics in front of a naturally disciplined German rhythm section, with Sterling on Arto Lindsey guitar, and a bit of keyboards;both played as if he had just met these instruments for the first time. I could play this CD to my neighbours and they probably wouldn't say "What The Fuck Is That?"....which is quite rare in the enormous canon of things Jandekian.

The Blue Daisies ‎– "Wilt" (Iridescence Records ‎– I-23) 1985

Oh Alright, let's call this 'Art Rock'.
Highly possibly done by unemployed actors as well by the sound of it. Brad Laner played some Drums on this, not the drums that sound like Bobby Gillespie's skinwork in The Jesus and Mary Chain...the more inventive stuff at the end.
I know less than nothing about this band, except that they come from L.A. although I understand that they liked to take their clothes off on stage regularly.......now, if they ain't actors I'll share a dressing room with Kevin Spacey the next time I tread the boards at the Old Vic.
Fairly original abstract, slightly rude, avant-rock is what this is.
Featured on the soundtrack to 1986 movie 'Circle of Violence'(yeah neither have I!) starring long dead child star River Phoenix, who hated both the Blue Daisies and their music apparently. If that isn't a recommendation I dunno what is?

The Philosophic Collage ‎– "Genius" (American Aesthetic Industries, Ltd.) 1981

Angry geeks want to show us jocks how much cleverer than us they really are,and 'look at me now' revenge has been taken...if only the jocks knew about it,which of course they don't...Jocks don't like music, only music for people who don't like music...like Bon Jovi, Nirvana,Techno, Ed Sheeran etc.
The EP title, "Genius", is by no means "Ironic"....in inverted comma's not quotation marks...they actually believe they are bona fide Geniuses, which is the collective noun for genius. I wager the geekier one on the cover thinks that he's the real genius of the group, and the others are just his post-punk servants.
The music is like a cross between Half-Japanese,the ultimate American Geek's Revenge band , and The Diagram Brothers, the ultimate English Geek's Revenge band, except that the singer, slash, Jad Fair impressionist, seems to be recorded from a radio in another room. In the main room they have modern recording equipment to capture the barely falling apart abstract rock in hi-fidelity to annoy both punx and parent alike.Punk is Jock music and parents either want their geeky son to either be good at Football,or a Doctor. Parents are people who never understood the truth that is revealed to humans during their teenage years, and if they did, they forget that 18 years olds really do know everything that needs to be known.
If an angry Geek ever gets into power again....the last one that got in in the west, without winning the popular vote, nearly destroyed the planet (A.Hitler)....they may use the most terrifying Geek tool of all to force us all into death camps, otherwise known as,Facebook.Luckily we have the Donald, who is genuinely too stupid to impose this grim future upon us all...as is Biden by the way,so we're safe for the next couple of years before Biden inevitably dies, and that dodgy vice-president nominee,Ms angry female just enough milk in her coffee geek, gets into office.Nothing will save us then.

Last Exit ‎– "Cassette Recordings 87" (Enemy Records ‎– EMY 105) 1987

Oh Jesus! How shit is this new Blogger thing wot they've paid some 'expert' to re-jig!? Fucking Hell!
Remember MySpace? This is going the same way. I start a new post with a childlike excitement, then quickly give up in a childlike strop after trying to select labels for my new post.....click and wait technology......But, I won't let the 'Man' get to me with his power games...oooooh no! So here's a transitional Peter Brotzmann work, recorded on the humble cassetten, yet never released on a humble cassetten. Yup, it's Jazz Metal soopergroop , 'Last Exit' innit?
Do I hear a Groan?....unfortunately,yes, Bill Laswell does makes a traditional appearence with anything to do with downtown jazzy types. He's the Thurston Moore of Jazz, although I think Thruston Moore reckons that his-self is in fact the Thurston Moore of Jazz too? What is it with these serial collaborators? They crop up like a bad smell in a toilet, and usually contribute nothing......the jury's out on Eno however,'cus i'm a bit of a fan of our Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno.....but.....with a name like that he is obviously rather Posh, which gave him full Progressive rock qualifications above and beyond the call of duty. Never trust anyone with more than two christian names. A case in point is the beyond awful posh bloke whose childhood ambition was to become Prime Minister of Britain, and worse still, actually did!?......Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson......which is code for 'Bastard'.
Who the fuck has a realistic childhood fantasy of being a country's leader other than that priviliged line of human aliens with the reptilian DNA? Little undernourished Tommy Atkins from the council estate with the abusive parents' greatest ambition was to learn to read, not study Greek History with a bunch of Oxbridge cronies, and future leaders, and, do it all with a smirk on his face!? Why didn't someone slap those smug jowels at kindergarten and nip this horror in the bud? It might not be too late?
Yes, anyone can become a leader, except the Kings won't let it happen.
So, here we have a group, proudly displaying moustaches and beards when it was patently 'Unhip' to do so, wearing clothes that would impress only Michael Bolton's wardrobe assistant. Their debut sooper pooper groop eponymous debut was rather good in its musical napalm tendancies. This outing is less so,with rather too much of Sonny Sharrocks metally guitar work, and his even worse singing, but it has its moments.Brotzmann's sax is, for once, well mixed, and not stage front.Peter's other main contibution is likely to have been the very Brotzamannesque song titles of "Sore Titties" and the terribly rude, but laughable, "My Balls/Your Chin"!!!?
Recorded at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Copenhagen to cassette,so it has that nice saturated cassette sound that's so hard to reproduce in any other medium. We like cassettes here......sorry about the Laswell though.

Mary Horn, Davey Williams, Wally Shoup, Doug Carroll ‎– "No Way" (Cassette Documents ‎– CD 5) 1984

A full C-60 of "Not Yet Wave Music" from Davey Williams and unhinged cohorts from Birmingham Alabama.....wasn't that where Sun Ra came from? As opposed to Birmingham UK (Heavy Metals birthplace if you didn't know) which produced an opposite music (HM)to this barely structured improv, with hints of No wave.
This is one of the better recordings, featuring Davey Williams from this epoch, mainly thanks to Mary Horn's stream of consciousness vocalisation.

Suicide ‎– "Live 1977-1978" (Blast First Petite ‎– PTYT 011) 2008

I dunno what you lot have done to deserve this, but Here's a six cd box set of Suicide live performances from 1977 to 1978!?
Starting off in their native New York City, where they experienced no riots, to Europe where they seemed to invoke a need in the european audience to smash things up and try to kill our favourite minimal synth-punk duo?
Like the non-interference directive in Star Trek, to avoid influencing primitive alien cultures.Sometimes it was necessary for Kirk,Bones and Spock to intervene and stear the locals away from bad habits and towards a more progressive way of life. This is what Suicide did in Belgium, appearing like aliens themselves, beaming down to civilise the 'Rock' world by ditching all rock paraphernalia .As soon as Vega and Rev interfered in Belgian affairs, that country never looked backwards.Emulating a solid state Helen of Troy, Suicide were the faces that launched a thousand minimal electronic duo's, especially in the low countries, and especially in Belgium.
Dunno how many versions of 'Rocket USA' you can stand, but it tends to take on another form the more you listen to it.....and I should know, I've listened to the whole of The Stooges Funhouse Sessions, and this is an equally surreal experience.
The previous post had a version of the Brussels riot show on it, but here its been 'remastered' back into Mono, and seems to include an inferior version of the "21½ Minutes In Berlin" concert from 30th july(it says june here) 1978, including bleeped out naughty words.....so click here to complete your instant Suicide live collection.

Suicide ‎– "21½ Minutes In Berlin / 23 Minutes In Brussels" (Red Star Records ‎– FRANKIE 1) 1978

As Snowy Red namechecked Suicide on his first album, its fair to point out the enormous influence Suicide had on certain members of the Belgian audience from that night in 1978 that prodiced the '23 Minutes over Brussels' bootleg, which ended in a Riot.Headliner Elvis Costello, was apparently none too pleased at the treatment of his support act,so played a very short and bad tempered set, causing the infamous riot.
This is how Vega and Rev were treated at most of their concert appearances, including your scribes first concert experience in Leicester 1978, supporting the Clash, and The Specials(Then called the Coventry Specials). They barely lasted twenty minutes under the shower of missles, but I thought this is what Punk is all about isn't it? Facing up to and rallying against the accepted norms, forcing change by confrontation. And Suicide put their lives on the line for their art.
The format of two blokes with a synth and a drum machine fronted by a vocalist, became normal in Belgium. The seeds Suicide sowed that night, eventually grew into New Beat, and EBM.
The Brussels gig is the most famous, but the recording made in Berlin a month later is the most listenable, with plenty of analogue echo feedback enhancing Vega's Elvis impressions and screams.
A classic act captured at their height.

A side recorded live at Neue Welt, Berlin 30 July 1978.
B side recorded live at the Ancienne Belgique, Brussels 16.6.78.

Flores Feias - "F .˙. F .˙." (Meia-Vida - Mv32) 2015

Moving on from Rapael Flores, how about segueing with some different flora, with Flores Feias? Which means 'Ugly Flowers' in Portuguese, a very accurate description of the music on this Blog methinks?
I do harbor a proud reputation of being stuck in the past, in fact hardly venturing past 1984, for good reason. However, every now and again I hear a modern recording that doesn't bore the living shit out of me! One of these very recordings is this limited edition C-40 from the Brazilian cassette label, Meia-Vida. A solo project by Aline Vieira, it has echo's of the good side of Lydia' lunch's "Queen of Siam" LP, and in equal measures, the more minimal scratchy elements of NY No Wave. It doesn't hinder none that the perpetrator is the very opposite to an ugly flower to complete the equation.Brains and Beauty is a rare combination, and here's evidence that it exists.
In my humble opinion, the best Record of 2015.

Dark Day ‎– "Exterminating Angel" (Infidelity ‎– JMB-229) 1980

The Gary Numan of Manhattan's first Dark Day LP is from the time when electronic acts still used real drummers and guitars like The Numiester himself. Mainly due to a lack of a decent drum machine and syncing problems. On his second album, "Window" he uses that cheapo organists drum module with the preset rhythms we have heard on hundreds of tunes of that epoch. So this debut outing, after the end of his tenure in DNA, steers towards the doomy synth punk end of the woods.
A transitional record which would lead to a purer, and darker, form of minimal synth pop.

The Karen Cooper Complex - "Shinjuku Birdwalk" (Artifacts/yclept) (1981/2010)

Here's one of those unreleased in their lifetime oddities that we, in this musical desert we call the 21st century, are astonished that this was ignored back in the day. But there was a lot of competition back in what I often refer to as the 'Golden Period' of pop, 1978-83.
What we have here is basically 'The Art Of Walking ' period Pere Ubu with David Thomas replaced by Karen Cooper, who vocally improvises her way through this avant-prog no wave improv classic.
Unbelievably, This group never performed live, recorded this album, then Karen got pregnant/married, and that was it!? Life imitates art imitates life, and cancel each other out.Emitted from the resulting blackhole spawned forth this lovechild. An unloved twin of the sprog that Karen Cooper dropped after having it off with the guitarist!
