Throbbing Gristle – "At the Veterans Auditorium L.A. 22.05.1981" (Bootleg) 1981
Yer average American's idea of Industrial Music is the rather shit Nine Inch Nails, Ministry,Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly.....in other words. Rock music with a prefix...'Industrial Rock' they call it,just a tad of an oxymoron methinks.. They'd turn up at a venue featuring those English faggots Throbbing Gristle expecting Motley Crue and getting something almost intrinsically opposite to rock, except for the fact that it's loud. ........yeah,yeah we know there's more extreme noisey ouitfits out there to fuck yer brane up, and well done for telling us 'cus we know already fanx..The noise loses its effect without the silences, and TG make you wait for the noise. All the best horror films leave out the graphic stuff and leave it up to you what the horror is.TG does this very well indeed, leave the gore to Whitehouse......a group Genesis detested by the way.
Some Americans got it,notably Monte Cazzaza, who was credited with coming up with the genre name.He hales from San Francisco, the scene of TG's final dissolution, and the gig after this penultimate show in Los Angeles.Ah,those poor californians, living in the richest place on the planet had it so hard;but at least they could now slum it and pay to listen to what its like to exist somewhere where suffering is not just waiting for the next shipment of Cocaine from Mexico.I do understand, however, that when one has a long way to fall, it ain't no picnic to climb back up when faced with such wealth flaunted in the starving underclasses face. We all have our own private hell's...what's yours?

Else Marie Pade – "Face It" (Dacapo Records – 8.224233) 1957-1970
Denmarks version of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was basically just Else Marie Pade, who made weird aural backing tracks for Danish Radiophonic plays.
Musique Concrete is very much in evidence for Symphonie Magnétophonique, but the Little Mermaid, is very much in the realms of Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshires work for the BBC. For us non-Danish speakers, it sound even weirder because of the narration of this Classical Danish fairytale, which sounds like someone speaking backwards to the average Anglo-Saxon ear.
Face It's title track is where it gets really weird, with some unknown Danish phraze concerning a certain ranting German dictator, repeated in a loop, with filtered extracts from one of Adolf's very nasty nazi rally speeches. This was a full decade before William Bennett decided to do the same thing, rather less subtly I may add, for his various Throbbing Gristle aping Come Org projects.Especially unsubtle were his remixes of Maurizio Bianchi's work
Else Marie got there first, and she even fought against the Nazi's in the resistance too, before GPO and Bennett were even a twinkle in their fathers eye,and still in short trousers when these recordings were made.Having said that, I severely doubt they ever heard any of Pade's work....even if they were Danish.
Tracklist:
1 Symphonie Magnétophonique (1958) 19:27
2 The Little Mermaid 42:54 (1957-8)
3 Face It 7:58 (1970)

Larry Wendt – "Sound Poems For An Era Of Reduced Expectations" (Underwhich Editions – Underwhich Audiographic Series – No. 5) 1979
You know what? I could listen to stuff like this all day long. Its got it all, abstract repetitive tape loops, disintegrating ambience, glitching 1970's computers, urban field recordings, lo-fi sound processing, drones, concréte poetry, a bloke with a beard sitting in room fiddling around with cassettes,a good pessimistic title, and tape hiss.Who needs instruments, in fact bin the instruments off,if I hear another guitar line, or 'phat' synth bass notes, I'll go as nuts as Larry Wendt obviously is.
The use of the adjective 'Sound-Poems' for this is rather tenuous, stretching the poetry part to an extreme. It has far more in common with Musique Concréte and old skool Industrial than Hugo Ball or even Jaap Blonk. Its basically the music I grew up with after glam and punk had burnt out and left me with UK DIY.There were legions of kids who would churn out tapes like this every week in 1979/80, mainly the wide ranging influence of Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire rather than Larry Wendt, or even Hugo Ball.....although there is certainly a thread of distinct Dada influence by proxy that worked its way down from world war one era Germany into the bedrooms of Britains Youth......not that they were aware of this at all;but there were clearly many references in the works of The Instant Automatons and their various offshoots, like the Alien Brains, 391,and ,of course,Merz, which was a thinly veiled reference to Kurt Schwitters if ever there was one?
I'm figuring that the Dada influence on the North American continent was from a more intellectual angle, rather than fashion driven, as is mostly always the case in the UK,which exists as a mass consciousness as opposed to the individualism that US/Canadian culture is based on....its the vast distances involved in these north American countries that kills universal consciousness dead.
This is no longer the case however, as before the Internet the only way of meeting strangers from the other side of the continent was by snail mail,or telephone calls.Like communicating with an alien race,a conversation was impossible outside of your own town or star system, and that's where it stayed. In the UK anything good or bad, would invariably spread to the whole country within a month, generally stopping at the English Channel, and importing itself into the United States. The classic example being how American kids discovered UK Punk before they had even heard of the New York proto-punk groups from their own country.
Larry Wendt would not have heard of the UK Industrial Bands, but he was doing something very similar in Isolation.Naturally he wouldn't have stood a chance in Britain because he didn't 'look good'.You can't have one without the other 'inna inglan',as our jamaican sub-state would say, just like Americans would have never heard Reggae without it passing by 'Inglan' for the thumbs up first. Weird innit?
Welcome to a world of expanded expectations which expanded so much that it has destroyed entirely the thrill of the new.

Charles Bukowski – "70 Minutes In Hell" (Chinaski Records – BUK02CD) 2003/1977
One poet forward slash, raconteur, I can't get enough of is Charles Bukowski, who is such a misrable fucker that he makes me look like Ronald McDonald.
His slow motion apathy is as infectious as a dose of Malaria......i was gonna say thrush, but thats sooo yeasterday.
The black comedy of these readings can go over the head of persons who laugh at clowns, who are fucking weird anyway so who cares? Humour is an essential quality when faced with the sheer horror of existence, and especially when staring in the face of the grim reaper or the ferryman on the banks of the river Styx. The underworld is on both sides of the river. Bukowski is underwhelmed and he doesn't particularly care who knows it. The bard of drunken indifference.
This is the CD version of the original 90 minutes in Hell double album, but it now has 102 minutes of Hell on the file, after I added a few missing tracks. So we have extended the torture for y'all.Enjoy.

Brion Gysin – "Recordings 1960-81" (Perdition Plastics – PER 004) 1995
Here we go again.....anyone called Brion, not Brian,or Bryan, is certainly posh and reeks of privilege. With a brief bit of research these suspicions were confirmed.Educated at a Fancy public school near Bath (UK),and by the age of 18 he was studying at the Sorbonne in Paris. Hangin out with the likes of Max Ernst's missus, Salvador Dali and Picasso in the "Surrealists Group", from which he was inexplicably expelled by André Breton,as happened frequently were i came from, all at the age of 19. Needless to say,if you were of modest means it would be extremely doubtful you would be anywhere near André Breton, never mind being expelled from the community centre for crimes against Surrealism. I, for one,was never sent home from the local underclass abstract expressionism club and ,thankfully, never had to explain to my mum that Mark Rothko had me expelled for not being abstract or expressive enough, and could I invite Willem de Kooning over for beans on toast later?
The only art happening where I came from, was the odd swastika sprayed on a wall over the admitedly abstract phrase of "Pakis Out"*. Nowadays those very same 'Pakis' are spraying stuff like 'Brexit Now' to get rid of the Poles. Epitomised by the new tory Home Secretary, a child of ugandan asians, who is determined to shut the door on any more poor immigrants...like her parents were? Fucking Insane!
I don't wanna go through Gysin's life story, but lets just say, he never seemed to need a job,and drifted effortlessly around the globe meeting up with famous artist and bohemian types of all statures.
Most famed for the re-invention of the Dada-ist 'cut-up Technique, which was in fact nothing new,and gave it to William Burroughs to mess around with.Burroughs explained that Gysin was "the only man that I've ever respected in my life. I've admired people, I've liked them, but he's the only man I've ever respected."...slightly arrogant?
I suspect that Burroughs was the victim of that intellectual arrogance that all Public School boys, and upper class twits in England get drip fed at birth, even if they know fuck-all,which generally is the case.I'd say Bill respected Gysin because he was intellectually intimidated by those insideous British upper-class vibes,as most Americans are.
As far as I can see Gysin was just more inventive in his stealing from the past, and could explain it all away as his own doing, without actually saying so.
However These writings and sound experiments were a considerable influence on the Industrial Music, and culture of the late seventies......so says I.
Gysin enjoyed messing with language ,what makes a word a word, and how easily words change their meaning,or effect, by just rearranging a few letters or their speed. One short phrase could be transformed into a new language......or,as is the case in most of these pieces, into complete stuff of nonsense.
The same could be done with sounds,as in the Pistol Poems, with vari-speeded recordings of a gunshot, which he made for the BBC. A resurrection of another Dada-ist idea,'The Sound Poem'
This CD has all of Gysin's most influential recorded moments collected in one place.
Best listened to with one of Gysin's other claims to fame, he and Ian Sommerville's "Dream Machine",which was probably just the work of Sommerville, and Gysin named it afterwards?:

*Paki is a derogatory term used generally for anyone from the asian subcontinent, and is even used for Arabic and semetic people by the ignorant. The equivalent of the 'N' word but for asians. I've even heard it used by Indians as an insult to white people, as in "White Paki"......its crazy ol' world out there innit?

Robert Ashley – "Wolfman" (Alga Marghen – plana-A 20NMN.048) (2003)
Then he had a go at very early 'Ambient',with his 40 minute long tape collage "The Bottleman". This was the best part of 20 years before his dialogue operas for TV started taking shape.

Jack Smith – "Les Evening Gowns Damnees - 56 Ludlow Street 1962-1964, Volume I" (Audio ArtKive – Audio ArtKive 01) 1997
If fucking around with your mates and recording it is Art, then so be it. Hell, we've all done it ain't we?...if not ,then you should have.
Jack Smith, who virtually invented 'Camp Art' and zero budget trash cinema, seemed to have a great time at 56 Ludlow Street with his artsy chums, which included most of the nascent Velvet Underground.
It all sounds great fun to these ears.
This is where Lou Reed stole his lyrics from and Warhol stole the ideas for his movies.
Jack Smith is another one of those ignored and forgotten counter culture heroes who accidently inspired others with greater ambitions to achieve imortality.Without Smith there would have been no John Waters,or Laurie Anderson;but Smith did all of this for no other reason than to entertain himself, because there was nothing out there like his films or his living artwork, himself, existed pre-Smith.
He certainly had his fifteen minutes, but thats all he wanted, and all he got.Others, like Lou Reed, outlived their quarter of an hour, and how we wished they hadn't.
In the future everyone will be as obscure as Jack Smith for Fifteen Minutes.

"LSD - promotional version" (Capitol Records) 1966
This is the companion release to the other LSD documentary album (LSD - A Documentary Report- 1966 Capitol Lp).
It was released to radio stations to promote the lp and contains an "open-end" interview with Doctor Sidney Cohen, M.D..
This "interview" is similar to the open-end interview album released by the Byrds to promote the "5D" album where DJs would play this record and have a list of questions that would be "answered" by playing back the record,or even better ,you could conduct the interview yourself and make believe that you were there? An ingenious way to promote both the album and the drug, saving the artist a lot of time and travel;even though the artist,if on LSD would have had all the time in the world slowed down and should be able to travel around without leaving the room. It also contains several excerpts from the released album.

Wavy Gravy – "Old Feathers - New Bird (The 80's Are The 60's Twenty Years Later)" ( Relix Records – RRCD 2032) 1988
Like a hippie version of Steven Kings 'It', Hugh Romney, better know as Wavy Gravy from the Merry Pranksters bus, has been spreading the same kind of redundant Hippie humour since this affront to taste began.
One thing I found more creepy more frightening and not at all funny than Hippies when i was a boy, were Clowns! And Wavy Gravy would have been my ultimate choice for the movie role of 'Pennywise', the evil clown from the aforementioned schlock horror novel,'It'.
Just the tiresome Psychedelic humour is enough to send me screaming into the street begging the nearest policeman to take me into protective custody.
Yeah, there are some obvious anti-social aspects to his routine that one can't disagree with, but who cares what 'I' agree with, I don't!
The title of the album is nonetheless quite accurate, the last thirty years of the 20th century in fact were exactly like the sixties.Full of right on rhetoric about a non-existent rebellion,of the mind if not with direct action. But, the enlightened new breed still carried on feeding the consumer machine, and pushed priorites like the enironment back behind job prospects,'partying' and nice stuff for the house.
Someone else can do it, and that is never gonna change.
He may be a creepy clown, but Wavy Davy has kept some kind of faith in what he says, even if he is stuck in an eternal childhood, even in his eighties.
And why not?

The Merry Pranksters - "The Acid Test Reels" (Bootleg) 1966
Hey cats,Dig Those Crazy Beatniks getting off their tits dude. A psychedelically painted school bus full of middle class drop outs ,pseudo intellectuals, and proto-psych muso's try to outdo each other for 'crazy' weirdness maaaan,on a trip, both chemically and physically, around the posher parts of the US of A.
The music ,mainly by the nascent Grateful Dead, is mostly dreadful.....The Dreadful Dead.
Sounding like a really bad version of The Banana Splits, but with less depth.
Lots of crap white boy blues riffs and rock'n'rooooolllllll maaaaaan. They sound like a right bunch of hipiddy-doody twats on a trustfund cop out mission to make everyone they meet as pointless as they were. Personal freedom maaaan.......i notice they were free enough to do a drug fuelled trip around the USA.Maybe if they'd have done it in East Germany,or through Africa handing out food rather than LSD there would have been a worthwhile point to all this spoilt brat Counter Culture posing.
The Merry Pranksters, like a 1950's university fraternity reunion, are less annoying than Gerry Garcia's psychedelic cheerleaders.
They tend to use the word 'Rap' a lot, which was 'hip' talk for talking for the Beat generation. The spoken word sections and the tape collages are a better recreation of what it was like to be out of your skull on the Acid Tests of 1966.It is also an accurate portrayal of what a pain in the arse it is to around some idiot off his tits on drugs. There is no more boring a person than a person on any class A,or class B for that matter, drug.Alcohol is also included in this observation.
Just imagine being stuck on a bus with thirty or so of them quaffing jug loads of LSD.You'd be well advised to join them or be bored shitless.
Anyway, here's 6cd's worth of the recordings made during the Acid Tests of 1966.If you like bad blues riffs, 'poets' talking through echoplex tape effects, oscillator twiddling, and interviews with some trustafarian psychedelic narcisists, then this is for you.You can almost feel that you were there, even if you're glad you weren't.

Ken Kesey/The Merry Pranksters – "The Acid Test" (Sound City) 1966
If a bridge from the Beatniks to the Hippie Era existed, it was Ken Kesey and his band of 'Merry Pranksters', who travelled the west coast in a psychedelic school bus called 'Further' dishing out LSD to those they encountered. This was called the Acid Test.
Kesey was better known as the author of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest",among other, lesser, works.
The nascent Grateful Dead,or the Warlocks as they were first known,or The Dreadful Dead as I prefer to call them, were frequently seen at the various venues for the Acid Tests, and contribute some extra drugged up nonsense to this recording of Ken's Gibberish, with BFF, Ken Babbs, adding more unhinged lunacy as resident 'Non-Artist'.
Kesey, like all self-promoting Artist types, wanted to see what would happen when hallucinogenic-inspired spontaneity confronted what he saw as the banality and conformity of American society.Predictably, lots of arrests and middle class outrage was the result, which, contrarily, led to LSD being banned in late 1966.Little did Kesey realise,or maybe this was the underlying metaphor that most artists seem to strive for, that he was creating another form of conformity and banality in the rich kids playground called the counter culture of the mid-1960's.There really is nothing more banal than a drugged up idiot who thinks he's pushing the boundaries, but in reality is just another drugged up idiot who, apparently, doesn't need to work to feed himself,or pay for the drugs needed to extend his realm of idiocy further.
Yeah, they obviously had 'fun', but don't read too much more into it than that. The adolescent challenge to conformist society was already happening,it just didn't have a name,or a semi-celebrity benefactor, all done in the name of 'art'.Most of the sub-culture elite 'artists only please', passengers on the bus either died early, or became part of the post-woodstock society that they were allegedly against. There's no escape.
Alternatively, I suppose they could have done nothing? Now that's a real challenge to the status quo.....do nothing.Buy nothing, say nothing, create nothing, just enough to eat,drink,.... exist.End.

Jim Jones – "Jonestown Death Tape" (Stalker Records – SR003) 1978
If a god told you to jump off a cliff would you do it?......er No, but i'll drink some Cyanide.Yeah, that'll show 'em!
Drugged up bible thumping commie, Reverend James W. Jones ,less than subtly suggested everyone kill themselves to 'step over from this world' to achieve peace. The silence at the end of part two of this casssette recording of the suicide event, seems to suggest that peace was indeed found, but only after all the screaming children had succumbed to the crude death potion the leaders had prepared for the, mostly, willing victims.
The most amusing aspect of all this,if you can find an amusing aspect, which I believe can be found in any situation;is that this alternative lifestyle,or alternative to life, was funded by welfare checks. So much so that they managed to leave around seven million dollars to the USSR in their collective wills;including half a million in cash in a suitcase that was supposed to be delivered to the Soviet Embassy in Georgetown. The suitcase courier was one of the lucky ones as he survived to tell the tale, incredibly after dumping the suitcase.....were these people dumb or what?
One assumes that the People's Church Choir were among the screaming victims as they convulsed before death in great pain.So we can see this tape as their farewell recording,or second album.
I've added a bonus track from one of the few survivors Laurie Kahalas, who 'channeled' this painfully weird poem in 1974,predicting,so she reckons, this future event within its cryptic structure. It also demonstrates why these people found it hard to fit in.
Tracklisting:
1. Rev. Jim Jones Speech
2. Death tape Part 1
3. Death Tape Part 2
4. Allegory (bonus Track- Laurie Efrein Kahalas 1974)

Church Universal And Triumphant, Inc. Featuring Elizabeth Clare Prophet – "Invocations for the destruction of Rock Music) ( Faithways International ) 1984/2001
I mentioned that there were little or no Female cult leaders in the "Lord of Lords" post;well I forgot about Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and the Church Universal and Triumphant.
Expecting a Soviet attack on the Ides of March 1990, the complete loonie toons of the Church Universal and Triumphant sect, sold everything to buy food, guns and ammunition, to retreat into their nuclear bunker to survive and spread the word....mainly about how nasty Rock Music was. The fact that after a nuclear Holocaust its unlikely that any Rock bands would have survived;and even if they did I doubt they'd feel like churning out their hits with the radiation sickness, lack of food an'all.
But, just in case some of these demons survived, they kindly recorded these chants and other moments of deranged madness to educate the mutants who would inherite the wastelands of Earth not to fall into the same trap.
Educate it will, if there's any electricity to play this disc, so the Mutants wouldn't be stupid enough to raise any religious beliefs from the ashes of that former civilisation.
I do, however, 100% agree with Elizabeth Clare Prophet's invocation against Rock Music, so I may have joined them in their underground bunker to avoid that Soviet nuclear attack that never came in 1990. Oh how foolish would I have felt after emerging into police custody and charged with illegal possesion of an automatic weapon.or worse, illegal possession of a wart, dancing with a mailman, and marrying a horse.(I paraphrase of course, from dodgy perv comedy genius Woody Allen's classic "Take The Money and Run"...pretty much a perfect title for most religious sects methinks?)
Unfortunately, doomsday never came, and Cindy looper (sic) still lives to spread her evil, along with:
(there are some exceptions*/** who have now followed Elizabeth to burn in Hell, but a lot are still harming our childrens ears and s0-called minds....so let us pray:
"All perversions of the third eye
Through distorted and exaggerated images
Perverted movements of the body and breakdancing
And other forms of dancing
And we especially call for the judgement in this hour
And the destroying of rock music directed
Specifically against children
Through the videos that were portrayed
And working specifically through these individuals
For whom we call for
The judgement of the sacred fire of this hour
Before the throne of almighty god

Thee Electrocutionists – "Sorry: Not In Service" (Union Pole – UP57) 1995
Another project that featured Phil Todd of Ashtray Navigations was Thee Electrocutionists. The sound is yer usual trademark effect laden fuzzy noise encrusted dark ambient fog, and the cover seems to predict the London Bombings of 2007. Although I do rember an IRA bomb doing the same in London, when an Irish Terrorist/freedom fighter was transporting a bomb which prematurely exploded, killing the idiot, and injuring a few passengers in the process.
I was, once upon a time, witness to the last IRA bomb on the mainland, a deadly Bicycle bomb!? Not quite as laughable as the underpants bomber, but laughable all the same. This lethal bike was spotted, casually chained to the railings on Brighton Pier! Why those vicious religiously extreme marxists. The bomb squad effected a controlled explosion while we all watched from the pub, and cheered when it went 'POP'!
The worst part of the evening was, whilst asleep in the hotel, the fire alarm went off, so we all thought it was the proper bomb this time and rushed to get our clothes on to escape this evil. Turned out that some twat was smoking in his room and set the smoke detector off!!!

Astral Social Club – "#5" (Self-Released CD-r) 2005
After having witnessed Lady GaGa delivering her vomit inducing acceptance speech at the Oscars,I can forward the good news to Neil Campbell, that never giving up will inevitably lead to winning an Oscar? GaGa informs us that after all those years of her back-breaking toil, the hard work has paid off. Let that nugget of information ring melodiously in the ears of fruit pickers and building labourers everywhere. When you get home after a 14 hour day, to eat yer baked beans, and rest your totally fucked back, remember that Lady Gaga has been working hard too you selfish bleeders. Those days when Lady G's lickle fingers were sore from playing her piano for a full half an hour, non-stop, then maybe another half an hour later , must have been sheer hell. And theres you, lording it with your feet up, eating the beans you got from the food bank, complaining about your health problems when poor millionaire celebrities have had to cope with the stress of doing the thing they love as a career, and working a couple of months in the year, at the mercy of those harsh razor tongued critics.
I doubt Neil Campbell would call what he does as 'Hard', but he will never give it up, and like Gaga will one day win an Oscar for best 'original song'.That would probably make me watch this sickening self-congratulatory back-slapping atrocity exhibition for once.
Oh Yeah, by the way Gaga, your so-called 'Original Song',in a film which is a remake of a remake of a remake, is fucking shit.
At the end of the day, who do you want in your nuclear bunker when the balloon goes up, a useless song and dance celebrity, or the fruit-picker with the fucked back?....thats right, Lady Gaga. As long as she brings some champagne, and signs my Flock Of Seagulls CD.
Giggle, giggle,I'm so excited,I can't wait for the next war.
