Rudimentary Peni ‎– "Echoes Of Anguish" (Outer Himalayan Records ‎– BOOBOO6) 1997

Rudi P goes metal......but it's good metal. Simple riffs, no boring solo's, short tunes, and intelligent lyrics......but it' ain't no 'Death Church'.
Mark E. Smith once said that Punk Rock was just 'badly played Heavy Metal'; well this version of Punk Rock is well played Heavy Metal, that doesn't sacrifice intelligence for power, both of which it has in spades.

Tracklist:
A1 The Flame Of Insanity
A2 In Memory Of Pain
A3 Dissolution
A4 Only Death
A5 Womb So Scorned
A6 Time Passing
B1 Echo
B2 Voice
B3 Stone
B4 Trial By Separation
B5 From The Heart
B6 Your Secret Life

I've always thought of heavy metal as poorly played punk, minus the energy, motivation, awareness and in most cases, the intelligence, depending on the punk. HM reminds me of monster cartoons to keep boys happy and head banging away. To see a metal crowd reminds on of a nazi rally. I'll take chaos any day.

Hey Citizen, I have greatly enjoyed your excellent punctuationless stream of consciousness blurb, and wondered if you would like to do a guest review of Rudimentary Peni's "No More Pain EP", as i'm running out of stuff to say about RP....what d'you say?....gotta be done before thursday if mission accepted?

Indeed Rev b, heavy metal...where do you start...preferably stop is a good starting point.
Punk Rock rapidly became heavy metal, and crime of crimes, was directly responsible for the NWOBHM, quite unforgivable......Motorhead excluded of course, who were never metal, and Lemmy always said as much.
The hideous, and ironically titled, 'Punks Not Dead' crowd, truly ended that journey for me. I had long jumped ship before that following what i believed was punk, like Pop Group, Wire,PiL etc rather than the Exploited and the Oi movement.......having said that there are some intelligent modern metal groups, like Sunn(((O, Boris, Ufomammut.....but i wouldn't call them metal personally......so there.

Where has this band been all my life? Starting with this one and working backwards so to speak. Great punk / metal. And short songs too. I have a short attention span. So alot of stuff over 2.5 mins if ain't genius gets skipped. Love this. Is this guy you talk about, the main man, still alive and / or making music / art? I can totally relate to his work which I won't go into. But hey, this guy / band are class act. Thank you so much for this Jonny! You are a fine wine indeed!

Nick Blinko, yes still alive. Now a renowned 'Outsider Artist'(Schizophrenia is his marketing angle), shifting units in galleries stateside. I think there's a link in the 'Death Church' write up......if you're working backwards the best bits are at the end of your journey.
Yes, i see myself as a fine whiner with nutty undertones, and a hint of cyn-amon (sic).

How could I say no. I've actually made contact with someone but I have to check if it's desired or not for me to balk about. So it goes. But only if we make a Peni cover band with Judas and name it Enormous Clitoris... ???

Ok, deal, My choice of Peni covers are either 1/4 Dead, Rotten to the Core or The Mercy of Slumber from 'Archaic'....but i bet you want something from cacophony!.....i await your RP submission.

Count me in! Whose gonna do vocals aka who smokes the most cigs and drugs and drinks the most whiskey? This band are fucking amazing. Everything a good punk / metal band should be. ie short intense songs, intelligent lyrics and delivered with venom and spit. That's my humble opinion. Though couldn't that be a blueprint for alot of r n' r. Look away progressive metal fans! I just realised something this afternoon while listening to Echoes repeatedly. The whole Echoes album is approx the length of 2 medium length Metallica songs! As the saying goes: short and thick does the trick.

How about Clitor-Christ for the band. Just taking your idea somewhere different Citizen.
