"THE END OF MUSIC"

I'm gonna pack this lark in for a while. Sick of death threats, sick of spending my free time typing, ripping and uploading, sick of being accused of being racist,a communist, nazi, and satan knows what else etc......very sick of Punx(especially Punx my age),humanity(with exceptions) ,sick of being sick, but above all I think I'm sick of music. This, i'm informed is a sign of depression.....whatever? Not yet sick of living,as we got eternity to be dead in haven't we? But music has checked out early it seems.

Will continue the radio show(s) and the 'Shadow Blog',will answer comments, keep the downloads alive ,and may produce a concise coffee table book for your entertainment (that was someone else's bright idea).....I'll probably get bored and be back spewing rubbish in cyber-print tomorrow...who knows? Meanwhile the blog will be left to fester, like manure, to nurture new seedlings......but forget about 'the Kids' doing anything exciting with music, they're into something else, and it definitely ain't music i can tell yee that!

It's an age old rock'n'Roll trick to retire and play the last show...EVER, only to reappear the next year with a new image and a new album innit? This is my 'Spiders from Mars' moment, just humor me will ya?

So,to bow-ie out gracefully, ere's a slightly marxist independent pamphlet ,printed in Glasgow around 1983,that kinda sums up the demise of music into a pointless sludge that any fucker can do, quiet nicely. Its not special no more Bobby Joe, thanks to the success of D.I.Y! Boo-Hoo-Hoo?But DIY was more than just doing it yerself wasn't it?

Anyway,It's a jolly good read (the pamphlet),and largely correct. Like Artists, musicians are full of shite, and that's how we'd like them to stay, but they do need to be fucking told.

TaTa fer now kiddies.

  1. omfg come back soon please! This blog has introduced me to so much music I didn't know existed - and I'm in your age group! Whatever, enjoy!

  2. Only found out about your blog a few months ago, sad to hear this. But as they say, whoever they are: as one door closes, the other one opens. Someone needs to fix those doors. Anyway, good luck in your further adventures!

Nooooooo! Please reconsider!!!! Yes I agree music has all gone to shit, but you're one of the reasons the rest of us stick with it. Granted, there's not much in it for you, but, like, keep writing for the people, man?

  4. Whoa, what if this isn't a cry for attention and appreciation. Doesn't matter. I've enjoyed this blog immensely and it's been one of the few things I've consistently looked forward to for I don't know how many years. Thanks for the thoughts and the tunes. Your effort has not gone unappreciated. Best of luck, Boris

  5. It was a good run man. If I could buy anything I downloaded from your blog (without paying, say, hundreds of dollars or pounds for a Broken Flag cassette), I would have done it. Do what's right for you.

  6. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through some tough times. I can totally understand the feeling. I'm glad that the blog will still be here to preserve the great stuff you shared. I wish you the best and hope to see you back sooner than later

  7. Easy to understand yer viewpoint. Life involves breathing. Breathing involves inhale and exhale. in and out. Hmm, sound like sex, sort of how we all got here eh? Anyway, you’ve been exhaling here for a good long while. I’ve enjoyed it, but what has it gotten you? You’re a commie, a racist, a nazi and gawd knows what else. In any case, hope you’ll enjoy inhaling for a while. Whether you’re back tomorrow, next week, month, year or never, this does give me an excuse to say thanks again and that I’ve enjoyed most every racist, sexist, etc rant along with the crappy music/noise. Best of luck with whatever comes along and hope to hear from you again, but only when you damn-well feel like it.

I may not agree with everything you say, why should I, dull world if everyone thought the same or even looked the same, like the dickheads who wear masks cos some dick on telly says so. robots who can't think for themselves, who don't know how air circulates, who can't join the dots even when they are numbered. 1. Vaccines are dead cell debris 2. dead can mutate 3. dead can't reproduce 4. doctors/medical profession are responsible for a third of deaths in Amurica including starvation, vaccine death, death by infection caused by bed sores.
No world is mad enough with sheeple believing fuckwits like arsehole Boris, fascist Macron, pedo Biden, pseudoscientists, venal pharmaceutical companies who are ALL owned by the Rockefellers/Rothschilds, including Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, JPMorganChase, Facebook, Johnson&Johnson, ExxonMobil, Berkshire Hathaway, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Pfizer, Chevron, UnitedHealth, Proctor&Gamble, ATT, Verizon, Citigroup, VISA, Intel,

  10. Upon reading this, there was heard a 'gasp!' around this house that surpassed the one heard at the Hammersmith Odeon that night when David Robert Jones announced 'not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show we'll ever do'.

What a shame. I think life's too short to quit, but then I don't have a blog, i haven't received death threats (so much for 'social' media. I wonder if tempers would get so heated if we were all in a pub (maybe it would get worse! You can't wait outside the internet, at least). Wonderful blog, one of the best and the best ones seem to be dropping off like flies.

    Well, here's to you.

  12. Hello and Goodbye!

It's been a real pleasure, and I am grateful for your helping people to discover, whether anew or again, music that might thrill them or free something within them.

Look for "The Attitude Robots R Unable 2 Assist U." (I'd send you a copy, but only seldom do people have copies of their things.) It's made by persons with sound.

There's heaps of related stuff -- some with Jad, some without -- on my Soundcloud page: http://www.soundcloud.com/benbgallaher

(Also, because I can't find anyone to play music with me, I've resorted to composing it. A lot of that's on there, too.)

Music merely appears to end because people die, but we're dunderheaded.

All the best to you until the next.

    Cheers,
    Benb Gallaher

  13. This is sad news re: Johnny. Like him I am also bored of music. Ir was a great distraction for 40 years as the very people punk hated stole everything on the planet that wasn't nailed down. We didn't put up much of a fight. Music wound up being another thing westerners could hate each other for and fight about. Pounding the shit out of each other in mosh pits didn't stop capitalism.

I hope Johnny maintains his YT page. One of my favorite things in the world the last couple of years are his album remixes. That should, and still could, be huge. Everyone should want to hear those. The sheer genius and profound sense of humor in his approach were completely original. Where ever you go and what ever you do Johnny I wish you all the success you so richly deserve. Adios amigo.

Hope that I've humoured you enough. And I'm looking forward to the great comeback.

I'll still be doing shadow blog and carrying on my vendetta's....that is something i do get pleasure from,as well as watching Leicester stuff it to the top six evil doers.

"Vaccines are dead cell debris" is a song title for one, but on a scientific note, Virus's don't tick many boxes when it comes to being 'living entities' themselves, so of course the vaccines are likely to be dead too....as is virtually everything we eat.
I enjoyed hearing several stories of anti-vaxxers dying of Co-vid, but of course the surviving ones will say its govt propaganda and made up.....rather like what we sheeple say about their ridiculous theories. They'll believe anything they read on the internet as FACT,and we're all gonna be slaves because of them...thanks a lot you bunch of paranoid twats.

i may be gone, but we can carry on arguing...don't mind that at all.

  23. Jonny, thanks so much, you are always refreshing, entertaining, provocative. You’ve posted so much great (and not so great but crucial to know about) music, how did you ever get hold of it?

Much of it I didn’t even download, just knowing it was there, and your take on it was enough. Tried to get many of my friends to read your posts, too. Loved how dis-agreeable you are.

Never said thankyou enough (maybe once or twice, can’t remember). Never mind the arseholes, sadly they are generally the ones who bother to keep in contact…

Will check out....if you fancy doing a by mail music project with myself,i'm here....i've sort of lost interest in instruments,so anything that involves me not playing guitars playing drums or farting about with a keyboard sounds good to me.Fucked up Dialogue loops interest me greatly as does randomly repeated vocal phrases?...you still doing poetry?

It also takes these fucking holy groups down a peg or two. There ain't many that i wouldn't love to take the piss out of....or better still, piss off their stupid fucking 'fans'....i don't like Fall Fans the most i think...even though that includes myself....the ain't i fucking Weird crowd. 36. I understand where you're coming from to keep doing this year after year on your own free time must be exhausting and there comes a time when you ask yourself "why?" Given that, this little space in the internet wasteland along with the long gone Mutant Sounds has given so much to the people who came here, downloaded and sometimes commented. This meant something.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Damn Jonny.... Instead of trying to come up with something witty I'll just say that I can understand your decision... Been coming here almost every day for years now and there have been times I was almost jumping from pure joy because you posted something that I was looking for for 35, 40 years, and because I was enjoying your writing (and the comments :) ) .... Somehow I never saw that there was also a shadow blog, now I'm curious! Wishing you, as always, the very best and I'll keep watching on facebook of course.... These are crazy times, they always were, for me anyway, but they seem crazier than ever now, even in the tranquility of the Lembang mountains where I reside, far from the maddening crowds and your voice was always a voice of reason, strange as that might seem :) So thanks!

i wish you the best and if you decide to return i will be here

  39. This is sad news, but thanks for all the great music/non-music and insightful commentary. If you ever find yourself really reaching for a reason to get out of bed, a scenario I know all too well, just remember: you still haven't gotten that early Camberwell Now boot from Scanner, there's a new Jandek record (I think) and, perhaps most importantly, Genesis is scheduled to tour in '22. Rumor has it, Tony Banks is finally up for embracing his inner GG Allin.

People are overwhelmingly shit, and while they've managed to murder more than half the planet's animal species, I figure there'll always be dogs. Also, Warren Ellis has opened a wildlife sanctuary in Indonesia for animals with special needs--largely due to humans being shit--so there's that.

  41. @ Parmalee....ah yes the new Jandek, Vancouver isn't it....the guy who promotrd that said he'd get ona plane and find me if I post that one...if that's not a reason to make a comeback i dunno what is.
I've given up on Scanner and his bootleg.....bad gobshite he!
I suppose Genesis will be touring France since Phil Collins is a god here.
Tony Banks is the personification of inert rage.
Warren Ellis is a nice man.....he's just gotta stop playing with that music killer Cave.In fact give up and look after traumatized animals full time, while we cope with the trauma of cave's downhill plunge since his first solo album.I can't believe I bought his fucking Book!?

  42. @badgerstump....i'll forgive that comment about my footy preference....a preference dictated by my birthright, but nevertheless a giver of the greatest football story ever told.
The nay sayers...you know me, fuck 'em all, but they are so tiresome with their uneducated banter that i want away from their diseases.
i also wanna do something else for a while, like watch football.Don't we play man city in the charity shield soon?
I love you too badge...is badge ok for familiarity?
Keep up the endless torrent of stuff on your rather marvelous blog....now i'm no longer a colleague,i may make comments as if i was one of those awful arse licking music fan bastards,so beware.

  55. I've been lurking here for ages but have never spoken up until now. While I feel that the world needs blogs like yours now more than ever, I completely understand your reasons for wanting to give it up. Frankly, I'm amazed that you kept it going for as long as you did.

This blog is frequently entertaining, but particular highlights for me over the years have been Jandek Mondays and your rants against that chap from VOD (the "Frank Bull pocket Branson person"). Your references to Leicester also resonated with me as I lived there for a few years in the 90s and developed a fondness for the Foxes during that time. I left just before Martin O'Neill took over - another case of great timing on my part!

I can honestly say that I never once found you racist or nazi. Maybe a little communist at times but not in a bad way. And yeah, some of the music you posted was alright too.

Anyway, I hope that in time you will rediscover your passion for music. I personally lost mine a long time ago but there are a few beacons of light - how could you not love Sleaford Mods? I mostly listen to noise nowadays, but even that has been in a steady decline over the past 20 years or so.

Thanks Jonny, hope to hear from you again on the Shadow blog.

  81. While I do hope you return and I will personally miss your acerbic wit and bar-none recommendations on fantastic music of all varieties, most of all, totally and completely, I will just say this: well done good man. Well done.

  82. Enough of this, post more cool stuff instead.

  83. What a pleasure it has been over the years!
Many, many thanks - I had to check this great blog almost every day to see
what new bands were being commented on.
Hope to see you back soon.
    Rare, powerful, disconcerting, exciting.

  84. Eh-up JZ, I've been following Die Or DIY on/off for several years and it's been a tremendous resource from day one, BUT... having once published a blog of my own I completely understand how thankless a pastime if often is, especially when you're rattling off your thoughts to the page with little-to-response (just dozens, nay hundreds, of phantom downloaders). I look forward to seeing you back on here in a few months' time with a bellyful of fresh bile to off-load but, if this really is the end, then ta for your years of graft and for continuing to hammer away at it ("semi-legal on the edge of culture"!) when so many blogs fade into the ether after a handful of posts. All the best, old chap. ROOKSBY

  85. I'll be very sad to see you go, your blog is one of the few things that I actually look forward to, and I've managed to hear some excellent music here.

  87. The kids are indeed shite but they have a saying, "Do you", which in this case feels apt. Thanks you for the motherfucking Diagram Bros. If nothing else.

  88. Really amazed you kept going so long. Such dedication, such enthusiasm. Sorry to hear you're down on things now. Maybe take a rest, maybe come back later, maybe not. But even if not, your years of work are something to be fucking proud of, creating a wonderful online resource. I'm back here every couple of months reading and downloading and will no doubt continue doing that as long as you don't take it down. For now, take care, Jonny, and thanks.

  96. Danke! Spent some amazing years reading your blog. I really appreciated your love for the weird stuff. Some of it was really mind- bending and let my ears bleed. I also loved the thoughts you put into your texts. But everything has its time... since Peel had gone, you have been my bloodhound on the music- trace. Thank you for that - you won't be forgotten.

    Cheers from the Mauerstadt

  100. Sorry you're leaving us. Only discovered this blog a few months back and now I have a whole new treasure trove of sounds to discover for which I'm eternally grateful thanks to you, kind sir. Got a real chuckle out of your 'Punxploitation' series too. In that regard I'll leave you with this little joke I heard from fellow retiree Mark Prindle.

Q: How many punk rockers does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Trick question. Punk rockers can't change anything!

    Peace,
    Tw

  101. No Steve MRE for months. Punky Gibbon down and now you _ first world problems but hey thanks for years of producing the best music review site. Also describing our "contribution" sounding like a Danny and the Dressmakers tribute band is a unique honour.Hope you come back soon

  103. I held off further comments, figuring this final(?) post would reach 100+ comments sooner or later and here we are. I keep two folders in a larger blog link folder; one for the dearly departed, and another for the fondly suspended that I check every six months or so. I'll be adding DoDIY to the latter, keeping open the possibility that things may go horribly wrong and against all good advise your blog life restarts. That book “Is It Me Or Is Everything Shit?” sounds like it just might have THE ANSWER. Since you’re not directly involved with everything going fecal in this world, I’m sorry to say it appears not to be you, or me for that matter. if it was, the cure would be simple execution! BTW, I am NOT the man. That guy works two cubicals down. HE can solve your issues. So, best regards and thanks for the noise and grumbling, all very much appreciated. See you when.

  104. @ rev.b i dunno rev, i got all this spare time, and have achieved precisely Nuffin'.Maybe a come-back is on the cards. To quote Bowies' Young Americans, just for the sake of looking like a man who listens to the words maaan :
"He coughs as he passes her Ford Mustang
But Heaven forbid, she'll take anything
But the freak, and his type, all for nothing
Misses a step and cuts his hand, but
Showing nothing, he swoops like a song
She cries, "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?"

Reading All those chest swelling tributes is like being a ghost at your own funeral. And David Fair has done my portrait by ESP.So a haunting is on its way.
Can't stand Bowie by the way.

  105. Devastated to see this blog taken offline. But my heart feels wonderful knowing that it is back up. I stared into the depths of my music folder and looked at all the music I managed to discover and accumulate - all thanks to this blog for introducing me to many artists and sounds. I thought, "where am I going to go for the weird music, now?".

Many thanks to you for inspiring me in my musical endeavors. I hope to continue to see interesting things. This blog is an underground treasure.

  107. I'll never be able to thank you enough for introducing me to the Alan Silva albums "Seasons" back in March of this year. I never would have found this ridiculous jazz masterpiece without your blog which I return to whenever I'm in need of something from the very far left of the left field. Hope to see you back soon.

  108. No! Please no...this is the BEST MUSIC BLOG on the internets, you've exposed me to so much great music over the years..beg...grovel

  109. Wow. Pob lwc dude.

  110. I stop watching for a few weeks and THIS is what happens! A full-blooded tragedy. Controversial or not, I've always enjoyed your careening pronouncements, catholic disdain for all schools of thought and - most of all - murderous affection for sacred cows (Krautrock, John Peel etc.).

More than for the music, I've followed this blog because you are one of a miniscule sub-nucleus of music writers (and bloggers) who has anything interesting to say... if music is a source of ennui in these days of plenty (and I can scarcely disagree), then this ennui is compounded by the liberal consesnus conveyer belt of music journalism pretty much EVERYWHERE. Your vitriolic outbursts, regardless of where they splatter on the political correctness continuum, add savour to the meat, and contribute to the very cause you claim is dead: to Make Music Great Again.

I'll be keeping an eye out for some time yet. Hope to see you around.

  111. @ namakemono.....i've done a Bowie...i'm back already. It was a fantasy that i could keep my gob shut indefinitely.Got bored writing my book...i missed the interaction, which is most stimulating.
....and i agree with you by the way.

  112. Hahaha brilliant. Gone and back again like an encore!
I've sneaked out to the bar for more refreshment whilst the crowd shouts and stamps and when I return it's to hear what I came for!
Anything to avoid the come-down when the lights come on and we all have to tramp out into the cold empty night..
Thanks Jonny for continuing to play (fiddle?) whilst the ship sinks below the icy sea and I use fists to get my lifejacket from the fat fucker in a tophat.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Indeed Tipsy scohn or 'sgone?
It was a good way to get persons to read the pamphlet, and also see if anyone cared enough for me to carry on......like an encore. Not a fan of encores in the concert hall however...i usually want the fuckers to stop after 20 mins...which is the length of a concert by any good group worth its salt.
As for saving yerself in a crash landed plane or sinking ship, its scientifically proven that the one ready with his or her fists survive....another proven tactic in crashes is never help anyone...not even that large breasted girl in the seat behind you. These facts will save your life one day. There's no heaven so you won't be judged for your actions.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Well you say that but breast meat is the best bit. (And I'm a vegetarian). The 'End of Music' is a nice bit of work. Ta s'much for posting. Even though I'm ex Situ, ex Punk, (xcetera) I've never seen it before, probably because it's from the North and I'm southern nesh.

Being lazy & old with the memory span of a politico I can't remember if you've shared any minimalist plant music. Ffs point me in the right direction if you have because I need to listen to this before I die.
But it has given me an idea for my next work - the sound of worms eating my body parts, although I bet some bastards already done it.
