Galen Herod ‎– "Patterns for the outside surface of a cube" ( pegna 5) 1981

Galen Herod's pre-Tone Set escapades date back to the days when infinite synchronization wasn't available to destroy the human in the machine. The rhythm units didn't try to sound like drums or even like other drum units. No Overdubbing, a very 'Punk' concept rarely used by 'Punk' musicians, is a under-utilised method for keeping it real, as is No Keyboards; read as, used no conventional instruments.
Above all, it sounds great; primitive electronics laid down on slightly muddy analogue tape that you can't really dance to, unless as a soundtrack to a contemporary ballet.
It's the kind of electronica that presaged the work of Panasonic in the 1990's.

  1. I loved Tone Set. Later when I was writing reviews, I was sent a cassette of "Bite the Wax Tapole" and was VERY impressed. I hadn't heard this one, so I'm lookong forward to this. Multi-thank yous for this.

  2. Monsieur! thanks for the lovely share! I assume this galen herod is the same fella as just "Galen"? Either way, would you happen to have access to "Galen ‎– American Cassette Culture: Galen Recordings 1979-1982"? it's cassette culture and all the good things you champion! Hope you are well.....here in LA the 'rona has re-established closings and rising numbers...so I would love to pass away while listening to this collection...in the silence of my lonely room.

  3. Yeah,he was in the Tone Set, one of the few great american minimal synth duo's.
Yes i can get you the box set;it'll get me in trouble as its on Vinyl On Demand...i think that frank bloke who owns that wants to kill me,...so sure i'll get round to uploading it.
Galen himself seems a nice accomodating fellow. One of those musicians who are actually grateful for the exposure.
I'll try and make your last days on this earth as pleasurable as possible. I'll think of you while i'm fine dining at a top restaurant, before going to see some crap french hardcore at a concert venue with open bar.

  9. jonny, not to blow the roof off the "frank wants to kill me" / V.O.D. catalogue, but b/c these are so rare out there, just wondering if you may have any from the Experimental Products, such as "Glowing in the Dark" or even that Maria Zerfall set. no worries either way - i know this is a lot. thx 'gain for Herod!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Len, I have the maria zerfall comp from 2000 "Kopfkrieg' 1985 t0 1995..which is as good as the VOD one.....if you want the VOD version, you may have to wait, its only just come out.
Got all of the Experimental products releases on VOD.......are you fussed if i upload them at a lower bit rate...its quicker, and uses up less storage space.

    ReplyDelete
  11. johnny, that's awesome! I've got that maria comp., too, but for the good of all, if you should upload it, i wager some chap'll appreciate it for sure! man, what DON'T you have?! ha-ha. if you find that mz vod mammoth, please lemme know. for the experimental products, 320 mp3 is magic, but you're the captain of this ship; will be grateful for what's shared. i thank you for all; your efforts are spot on!

  12. jonny, my last requests before time to shut the hell up and listen and dispense with collector's mania. i throw these out as you seem to have the coveted VOD's; this one: SPK DOKUMENT III0 1979-1983 6-Lp-Box; and this one: Hermann Nitsch Die Geburt des Dionysos Christos; if ever you have, and post, would be monumental. thx for brightening COVID listening life during too much drkness!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Len.....dunno whether listening to Herman Nitsch is bringing light to the darkness, but this co-vid crisis has its big positives. For one i've never been so busy as a solo artist....people have got money to spend, and they don't wanna leave their house or wear on of those silly masks,
Also ,the more enlightened among us can listen to massive box sets.
SPK.....i think Stahlfabrik/wet dreams has that already uploaded, unless Fat Frank of VOD got to him, which i doubt. If not I do.
Nitsch....you got me there.Don't have it.
Will post the Maria Zerfall....she's german right?...so that fits in with my german free jazz angle a bit...i like to maintain a tenuous link in my posting behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
  14. jonny, posting of zerfall and experimental products would be killer! THANK YOU! cheers to time for listening, whether it be directly resultant of COVID or otherwise; simply cheers for listening!

    ReplyDelete
  15. P.S. I checked STAHLFABRIK; you're right, they did post it once upon a time, but, alas, frank strikes again with grand denouncement. ah well, so it tis.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Fear Not for I have said Dokument IIIO.Will upload it when i get the time.....will post it in a previous SPK post's comments section of your choice. Then i can leave it there permanent like.

  17. Here's a different hermann Nitsch nightmare....51 discs "Die Musik des 6-Tage-Spiel".....that should eat up some virus time! Keep me posted about these other tasty posts of "music" you're planning to post, if you don't mind! Hope everyone's well....

  18. 51 discs?.....will have to consult my therapist first before tackling that monster.
Only got 6 discs of live SPK to post, but thats probably more fun than two solid days of Herman.

  19. kevinesse, thank you for the massive dose of herman n. and jonny, thanks in advance for future posts of music in this thread!

    ReplyDelete
  20. hey, just a heads-up, kevinesse and jonny, there's some crafy posting business going on over on the Wet Dreams blog; SPK's Dok. is being posting in piecemeal fashion -- most excellent. jonny, jus wondering if you've found time for any electronic products posts? bit rate be damned, if you're willing; haven't heard that stuff in years. thanks for latest throbbing gristle, btw; is great!

  21. This is great Herod! Noticed tracks 6 and 8 aren't present. Any chance to have those added to the tracklist? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  22. for experimental products, can anybody share "tracks to glow in the dark" so i don't have to summon a million dollars for vod? tanks!

  32. Thanks for the Galen Herod VOD recordings. Great stuff! Of VOD, is Kluster's Klusterstrasse 69-72 available for listening.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ Grine.... yeah, Kluster is available.....but you will have to wait a week or so, I'm soooobloody busy with xmas orders that I hardly have time to post anything, never mind anything as massive as that Kluster stuff.
I may open up a guests only VOD shadow site.....I have virtually everything on file. I got a lot from internet hero Yass Waddah,if you remember him? He got banned after VOD complained a lot about him.....why he leaves me alone I dunno? He certainly isn't shy when it comes to slagging me off.
Only too pleased to supply any requests...over time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi, Johnny. Thanks for the reply. Don't know the Yass Waddah, but I do know that if you ever posted the Kluster, that would make my 2020 a lot brighter. VOD shadow site? --YES! I don't like grubby collecting that makes a mortgage payment improbable, you know? Future big thanks for Kluster . . . and anything else from the VOD sets.

    ReplyDelete
  35. well since this seems to be where one finds VOD, anybody threading here have Solo Works 1976 - 1979 from Robert Turman or even Kinky Tape Collection 1981 - 1983 from K2?

    ReplyDelete
  36. hi, ellen.....you're darn tooten...anything VOD is available here, subject to if i can be bothered to upload these things......i have both of course...will upload them later tonight
    watch this space.

  40. johnny wow thanks so much! in the vod realm, these are sorely missing from my collection: galen herod's modular electronics 1979-1982; young scientist's recordings 1979-81 and stratis - mokoyaro 1982-1985. much obliged if you've got 'em and willing to share someday!

    ReplyDelete
  41. @ ellen.....yeah got all that.....aren't all the original Stratis cassettes on this blog?.....will upload all your requests....gonna make an invite only shadow blog for all this VOD stuff to keep out undesirables like Fat Frank from VOD who is somewhat hostile to my existence.

    ReplyDelete
  42. jonny yes, you're right about stratis. just get curious about what vod does with remastering and all. coming in late of course, curiosity seems to be all one can afford with frank's sets, as unless you were there in the beginning, you'll be paying sorely now. which brings me to yes, SHADOW SITE!!! that'd be grand. thanks for fulfilling vod requests, much obliged!

    ReplyDelete
  43. @jonny, how does one get to the shadow blog? would really love to hear herod's modular electronics or young scientists thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Are you able to post Die Bain's Chronology (The Bain Total Years 77-85) 6Lp + 7" in 320? Thank you for all the other VOD releases you've shared in this thread!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Johnny, thank you for the quick reply. After clicking Nosferatu, I get redirected to the sign in page, and after signing in, get this: "This blog is open to invited readers only
    http://shadows-on-demand.blogspot.com/
It doesn't look like you have been invited to read this blog. If you think this is a mistake, you might want to contact the blog author and request an invitation."

Does DIE or DIY have an email so I can reach out directly and request an invitation? Thanks again!

Future post ideas: Galen Herod's Modular Electronics 1979-1982 as noted already in this thread and the Vanity Records box tapes if possible? Thanks!
